Singur: the Longest Year: a Brief Calendar

Samir Saha Law/national, state, local 2007-06-02

[Author: Samir Saha; Translator: Rama Kundu; translated from Dainik Statesman 25 May 2007]
[Translator’s Note: Singur—the best fertile farmland of Bengal till the other day-- completed its one year of occupation by the joint occupation forces of the CPI(M) cadres and police in service of Tata. Within this one year there have already been two suicides by farmers, one starvation death, two murders, in addition to a large number of injured men-women-boys, girls who are carrying on protest in the teeth of relentless callous and cruel musclemen. Here is a brief calendar of this grim one year of Singur]

On 18 May 2006 the chief minister declared – land will be given to the Tata company at Singur for constructing factory for producing small motor cars. The farmers, panicked at the declaration, called an emergency meeting on 21 May 2006, under the leadership of the local Trinamul MLA Rabindranath Bhattacharya, Panchayat member Dipak Adhikari, and the peasant leader Becharam Manna. When on 25 May quite a few executive officers, flanked by local CPIM leaders of Singur, came to survey the site for the proposed factory at Bajemalia the panicked farmers expressed their protest; the aggrieved peasants prostrated before the convoy of the Tata officers in front of the New Ujjal Sangha Club of Gopalnagar Paschimpara. They raised the slogan—‘Not an inch of farmland for factory!’ Indeed, it was on 25 May 2006, that the Singur peasants’ movement started, as the leaders of Singur Farmland Defence Committee claim.
On 27 May Rabindranath Bhattacharya, Becharam Manna, et al came to attend , on behalf of the peasants of Singur, the all-party meeting convened by the District Magistrate. They vehemently opposed the plan of setting up the Tata industry on the farmland. On the very same night there had been a meeting of farmers unwilling to part with their land at Gopalnagar Ghoshpara of Singur. On 4 June 2006 the fullfledged Singur Krishijamiraksha Committee (Singur Farmland Defence Committee) was formed with the Trinamul MLA Rabindsranath Bhattacharya as president, Sanjib Bhattacharya(SUC), Bikashranjan Bag(BJP), Haren Singha Roy(Congress) as vice-presidents, Bacharam Manna(Trinamul) and Shankar Jana(SUC) as joint conveners. The committee took 113 members to start with. The committee was framed in the house of Dipak Adhikari, The Panchayat member of KDG village.
On 18 June Mamata Bandyopadhyay came to address the peasants’ convention on the Hospital ground of Singur Bajemalia . It was a huge gathering, in which the large number of participants—both men and women-- from peasant families, share-croppers and farm-labors was particularly remarkable. In the convention the farmers took the pledge not to surrender a single inch of their farmland. On 25 June a huge procession was taken out by farmers at 2 pm from the vicinity of Singur Daluigacha hotel; it was a protest march against the appropriation of farmland for factory. In the procession of nearly six thousand the farmers carried sticks, brooms, sickle, ladle and stirrer and equipments used on farmland.The marching peasants roared out, threatening a stiff resistance movement against attempts to usurp farmland. Again, on 3 July the farmers took out a long procession. The police of the Singur PS declared the procession illegal and framed Rabindranath Bhattacharya and Becharam Manna in police cases.
On 13 July around 1250 farmers came to the District Magistrate’s office at Chunchura to submit their written declaration against surrendering their land. On 17 July around six thousand farmers gathered at the District Magistrate’s office and submitted memorandum indicating their refusal to surrender their land. On 18 July Mamata came to Singur. As a token of protest against the ban on cultivation of the Aman crop (of rice) within the proposed area of the factory she planted Aman sapling on the land. On 23 July three more fora joined the Singur Krishijamiraksha Committee; these were Mazduoor Kranti Parishad, CPI-ML(Naya Ganatantra), and Khetmazoor Samiti. On 24 July the farmers, the members of the movement against the government decision for forcible occupation of farmland for industry staged a road blockade on Durgapur Expressway for four hours. On 27 July the peasant women took out long processions. These peasant women, unwilling to part with their land, took out three processions from Gopalnagar, Bajemelia and Khaser Bheri on that day. The strong determination against surrendering their land was pronounced in their expression.
On 2 August and 8 August the farmers gathered at the Panchayat Office of KGD and Gopalnagar villages respectively, and presented memorandum appealing to the Panchayat office not to accept the government notification towards land acquisition. On 14 August the employees of the Block Land Reform office came to the villages to distribute the notice of land acquisition; but on facing stiff resistance from the village farmers they did not proceed and went back from the fringe area of Beraberi Santoshima Tala. 22 August was the day fixed for seeking the opinions of farmland owners regarding the proposed land acquisition at Singur B.D.O. office. Through the whole several thousands of unwilling farmers staged a sit-in at the office and voiced their grievance. On 24 August local CPIM leader Srikanta Chattopadhyay came to campaign in favour of land acquisition for the purpose of industry, and was instantly chased off by the peasant women of Gopalnagar Kolepara locality. On 26 August about a thousand students of the Singur Block—including both boys and girls—took out a long procession protesting against the farmland acquisition for industry.
On 1 September the employees of Land Reforms Department again came to serve notification of land acquisition, and went back from Beraberi Santoshi Ma Tala in the face of strong demonstration of unwilling farmers. On that day the peasant women had been holding brooms and sticks. On 3 September the peasants took out a long procession shouting slogans of protest. In the procession that started from the club ground of Kamarkundu Bharati Sangha the angry peasants burnt the effigy of the chief minister. On 7 September the peasants met in a huge gathering in front of Daluigacha D.D.Bharati Bidyalaya and took pledge for defending farmland. It was on this day that the farmers planted black flags in their own land in protest against the government decision. On 10 September the peasants formed ‘human chain’; holding hand in hand they stood encircling the land, while raising the slogan, ‘We will save the land.’
On 25 September the cheque issued in the name of an unwilling farmer was appropriated by another through forgery; at this angry, aggrieved farmers gherao-ed the Singur B.D.O. office. Several thousand peasants—men and women—demonstrated till night. The District Magistrate and police officers remained gherao-ed. In the meantime Mamata Bandyopadhyay arrived at the B.D.O.office in the evening. She insisted that the government must cancel its decision of farmland acquisition. Around 1-30 am at night the peasants were dispersed by the combined attack of Raff and Combat police. Large number of men and women were injured by the severe police thrashing. Mamata was beaten up, and dragged up into a police van and so sent to Kolkata. Seventy-nine people were framed by the police and thrown into the prison. Among them 42 women , including Payel Bag ( a two and a half years’ kid from a peasant family) were framed under the provisions of the arms act. The following day the police again lathicharged a peasants’ procession. In protest against farmland acquisition the organizers shut down six public Durga pujas at Singur. During Dewali the farmers lit no candle in villages like Gopanagar, Bajemelia, Beraberi, Khaser Bheri, Dobandi, Singher Bheri, Rupnarayanpur, etc. At the fall of October the farmers abstained from cooking and observed ‘arandhan’( no cooking as a mark of protest). They further observed the ‘lajja dibas’(the day of shame). On 27 October the public hearing at Singur was attended by social worker Medha Patekar, writer Mahasweta Devi, et al.
On 26 November Mamata came to Singur and planted potato saplings. The farmers also launched three camps for guarding the land. As soon as the police entered the village the women would blow the conch and thus warn the men. The police came to set up a temporary camp but being chased off by the farmers beat retreat. At midnight on 30 November 144 Cr.P.C. was clamped down by the administration. The police came down severely on the farmers’ camps and broke them up. Singur became turbulent with endless protests. Then came that black cursed day of 2 December. The police came down upon the rebellious people, unwilling to part with their farmland, by severe torture; in order to take possession of thousand acres some thousands of police carried their operation into the heart of the villages. The police unleashed hell in the villages for four hours at a stretch from 11 am to 3 pm, with unrestrained lathicharging, bursting tear gas shells, firing rubber bullets. Houses were racked. A large number of farmers—women and men—were injured. The farmers’ resistance was battered down. On this day Medha Patkar, on her way to the village, was detained by the police. She broke into tears at seeing the torture upon these peasants. In protest against the torture the peasants started continuous fast. The women too joined. 18 December was another black day. On this day Tapasi Malik, the teenage daughter of a peasant, was raped and burnt alive; subsequently her burnt body was dumped inside the proposed factory area. Singur was again turbulent demanding punishment for the murderers. The peasant women shouted in tears and anger. [Mamata Bandyopadhya started a historic fast in protest which continued through the month of December 2006] On 15 January 2007 the angry peasants stopped the convoy of Tata officers at Gopalnagar Sanapara. In the face of the situation the officers fled. Towards the end of January , even as 144 Cr p.c. was continuing, the protesting peasants-- who had by now been already dispossessed of their land—wrenched up the wooden pillars holding the barbed wire, tore apart the iron net. The dais raised by the Tatas for offering bhumi puja (a ritual of offering worship to the deity of the land prior to any construction) was destroyed.
On 4 and 5 February 2007 Singur was again turbulent with peasants’ movement. They launched a synchronized offensive from various corners of the village and pulled up the boulders demarcating the proposed factory area in order to get back the possession of their own rightful land . They set fire to a police jeep. Banashree Malik, a girl of six, and the daughter of a peasant—Pashupati Malik – was so beaten up by police that she had to be hospitalized. The peasants dug up the roads. Mamata, Medha came to Singur. The peasants started mass fasting alongside the fence demanding the return of their land. Medha was assaulted by the police. In March 2007 the peasants lighted lamps in front of the Kali temple at Gopalnagar in the memory of the murdered in Nandigram, and in sympathy for the injured. Mamata and others were present on the occasion. On 11 March Haradhan Bag committed suicide by consuming pesticide; he had lost his land, was one of the frontrunners in the movement, but could not bear any more the grief of dispossession. He passed away in the early morning of the following day. People of Singur mourned the death. On 6 April Bimala Khamaru, a farm labour, died of depression and semi-starvation. Since the acquisition of the farmlands, the members of her family could not get work on the land as they used to, and have been nearly starving. On 21 May 2007, on the eve of completion of one year of the movement the peasants had taken out a procession remanding restoration of their farmland; the police again throttled the movement ruthlessly with lathi, tear gas and rubber bullets. [Translator’s addition: On 25 May 2007 another active member of the Singur peasant movement , Prashant Das, committed suicide by hanging himself. Prashant was only 43, but after his plot of land was forcibly acquired by government he found it increasingly difficult to cope with the prospect of bleak future, and eventually succumbed to despair. Singur is stunned with grief, boiling in anger... ]

Facts of the Noah''s Ark Story

Facts of the Noah's Ark Story

In Judeo-Christian mythology, one of the best recognized stories from the Old Testament is the story of Noah and the Ark, and how they survived God's great flood. This story is a common one throughout many mid-east cultures, both past and present. The most notable of these is in the ancient Mesopotamian mythology, with the story of Utnapishtim and his story of survival of the gods wrath. Though both are telling what is assumed to be a tale of the same event, there are many similarities as well as differences in certain details of the story. Although some of these differing aspects are for the most part, fairly trivial, some of them are quite drastic from one version to the other.

The source of the myth in the two cultures is quite different, as well as the way the story narrated. In the case of the ancient Mesopotamian version of the myth, it is found in The Epic of Gilgamesh. It is told to Gilgamesh by Utnapishtim when Gilgamesh encounters him while on his quest for the plant of everlasting life. Here we have a first hand account of the flood, by one of the sole survivors of the flood, the tale itself is found in an epic of a great king, which wasn't exactly revered as a sacred book in the Mesopotamian culture, but was still treated with a great deal of respect.

This is quite from the ancient Hebrew account of the flood. In the Old Testament, it is presumably Moses who is telling the story of Noah in the book of Genesis. In this case, we have a second hand account of the story, found in what is considered to be a sacred piece of scripture, as written by one of the most important figures of the religion. The reason that man was to be exterminated from the face of the earth is also different in both myths. In the Mesopotamian version of the story, man was becoming an inconvenience for the gods he was so loud due to his numbers that he was keeping the gods up at night. Because man was causing this disruption, Enlil approaches the other gods and they agree to get rid of man by way of a great flood, so that they may sleep at night once again. Utnapishtim is warned by Ea through a dream, and is instructed with a rough guide to the dimensions, to build a great barque for himself and his family, animals, craftsmen, and all of Utnapishtim's belongings.

This is an extreme contrast to what is found in the Hebrew version. In that account, man was becoming too evil for God to bear, and so it was decided by God that due to his wickedness, he should be wiped off the earth. In this case, man was not an inconvenience, he was just not in favour with God. Noah was the only one out of all of man who was still in God's favour. So God came to Noah and told him to also build a barque, also with the exact dimensions given, and instructed Noah to bring on board his family, their families, and two, a male and female, of all the animals of the world.

However, there is no mention of this news of a flood coming to Noah in a dream, nor of him being permitted to bring with him any other humans besides his immediate family, and their wives. Also, the amount of detail regarding the dimensions of the barque is quite different. In the Biblical story, the dimensions are very explicit, with length, width, and height given. However, in the Mesopotamian story, the dimensions are not as precise, giving only a rough guide as to what the boat should look like.

The final warning before the flood is different in each version also. In the Hebrew account of the flood, once Noah has completed the construction of the Ark, God tells him to go out and collect a male and it's mate from every type of animal and bird, and that in seven days, he shall bring forth the floodwaters and destroy man. In the Mesopotamian version of this aspect, there is not as much of an advanced warning given. Shamash comes to Utnapishtim and says that when the Rider of the Storm arrives that evening, to enter the barque and batten it down. Though in both stories, the hero is given some advanced warning as to when the flood will begin, in the Mesopotamian version Utnapishtim is not given as great of a length of time as Noah was able to enjoy to get everything loaded aboard.

The duration of the flood is different between the two versions also. In the Mesopotamian account, the flood is said to have began in the morning after the arrival of the Rider of the Storm, and lasted for six days and six nights. It also states that the assistance of the gods of the Underworld was enlisted to help bring down the dykes and release the waters of the flood.

Utnapishtim says to Gilgamesh that the flood was so dreadful that even the gods of the heavens were in fear of what the gods of the Underworld were doing, and that they retreated to the highest level of the heavens, that occupied by Anu. In the Hebrew description of the actual flood itself, it was said that it lasted forty days and forty nights, not the single week as was stated in the Mesopotamian account. It was also God's wrath that man was suffering, and the creatures of the Underworld were in no way involved in this destruction of man, as man had brought this upon himself with his own wickedness.

In the Mesopotamian myth, on the seventh day of the flood, the rain stopped and the water grew calm. Utnapishtim looked around for land, and saw the summit of the Mountain of Nisir. Utnapishtim then set the boat aground on the top of the mountain and there it sat for a week before Utnapishtim began to see if the earth had dried off yet. First he let a dove loose to see if the water had receded yet, but it returned when it had nowhere to land. Utnapishtim then let a swallow loose, but to no avail, as it too returned. He then let a raven loose. The raven saw that the water had since retreated, found something to eat, flew around, cawed, and then did not return.

In the Hebrew story, Noah first set out a raven, which flew around until the waters had dried up. Noah then let a dove loose, but it returned because it had nowhere to land. Noah then waited seven days to release the dove again. This time it came back with an olive leaf. Noah waited seven more days, and released the dove a third time. This time it did not return, for it had found somewhere to go as the water had since dried up. The only noticeable difference between these two aspects of the story, would be the birds used and the length of time required for the waters of the flood to recede to a point at which man is able to again walk on dry land.

The last point regarding the two stories is that of the sacrifice to God or the gods after the floodwaters had retreated to a point that man was able to return to the land. In the Mesopotamian account of the myth, Utnapishtim made a sacrifice to the gods on top of the Mountain of Nisir, after he let the animals and others free from the barque. All the gods were able to smell the sacrifice, and came to it. Ishtar was also able to smell the sacrifice and came to it. She then says that she will not forget these days of the flood, and instructed the other gods to remember it also.

She then told all the gods except Enlil to gather around it. Enlil was excluded from the sacrifice by Ishtar because he brought about the flood and destroyed man. Enlil, however, came and saw the sacrifice, and was filled with anger that man had survived. Ea then stands up to Enlil on behalf of Utnapishtim, and asks how Enlil could have brought about such destruction on to man. Ea then leaves Utnapishtim to the mercy of Enlil. Enlil takes Utnapishtim and his wife, blesses them, giving them longevity and places them at the mouth of the rivers to live. In the Hebrew version of this last aspect of the story of the flood, Noah lets all the animals off of the Ark, and then he makes a sacrifice to God, just as Utnapishtim did. God smelled this sacrifice and came to it. God blessed Noah, his family, and all the animals and birds, and told them to be fruitful and multiply in number. God then established a covenant with Noah, saying that he shall never again curse the earth again with such a flood. As a sign of his intentions, God set a rainbow in the clouds, and said to Noah that when ever he brings clouds over the earth again, he will see the rainbow and remember his covenant with Noah. This is not much different from the Mesopotamian myth. In both cases the gods or God said that they would remember the flood, and Utnapishtim or Noah, which ever the case may be was blessed. In the Mesopotamian myth however, there is no mention of a covenant with the land or Utnapishtim to never curse the earth in such a manner again.

Though both of these stories are telling a tale of what was no doubt, the same event, there are many discrepancies between the two. From details surrounding the structure of the barque, to the actual length of the flood itself, there are many differences between the two accounts. At the same time however, there are many similarities between the myths. The fact that both said that a bird was the way which the respective hero was able to tell whether or not the waters had receded, and the fact that both tales say that the gods or God would remember the flood are examples of this. The truth of the matter is that, regardless of whether or not there are discrepancies between the two tales, the fact that both are describing the same occurance is truly remarkable and definitely says something about the cataclysmic impact which this event must have had on the ancient world.

How To Diagnose Tendonitis Around The Knee Joint

Darren MacLeod Health Fitness/wellness 2007-06-14
View Detail

Tendonitis is best described as the inflammation, irritation and swelling of the tendons that connect muscles to bones and joints. The condition can affect any tendon and almost any joint in the human body. The most common areas that tendonitis occurs is in the knees, shoulders, ankles, wrists and elbows. In this article we re going to focus on the three types of tendonitis that affect the knee joint.

Before we take a look at the different types of tendonitis that affect the knee we need to cover some basic knee anatomy. The knee is the connecting joint for three main muscle groups; the hamstrings, the quadriceps and the calf muscle. The hamstring muscles are located on the back of your thigh, the quadriceps muscle is located on the front of your thigh and the calf muscles are located at the back of your lower legs.

The knee joint also comprises of three main tendons. These are the hamstring, quadriceps and patellar (knee cap) tendon. These tendons are some of the largest and strongest in the human body. We will look more closely at these tendons later in the article. For now, all you need to know is that there are three different types of tendonitis associated with the knee, one for each tendon.

Let s take a look at how each of these tendons fit into the knee joint and how to tell if that particular tendon has developed tendonitis.

Quadriceps Tendon

It s very common for the quadriceps tendon to develop tendonitis, especially in professional athletes. The quadriceps tendon runs from the bottom of the quadriceps muscle down the front of the knee underneath the patellar (knee cap). If you have quadriceps tendonitis you will feel the pain directly above your knee cap. In some cases, the pain may extend up the front of the leg. The pain will feel worse when you sit down, or bring your foot up towards your buttocks. This is because the quadriceps tendon and muscle have to stretch. You may also find if you have quadriceps tendonitis that the area where your quadriceps meet your knee cap there might be some redness and swelling.

Hamstring Tendon

Hamstring tendonitis is often misdiagnosed as another form of knee injury. This is because the area that gets inflamed is often quite small (despite the large size of the hamstring tendon) and is close proximity to the back of the knee. The hamstring tendon connects to the knee outside of the back of your knee joint. If you have hamstring tendonitis you will feel the pain either in the tendon on the outside of the knee or on the back of the knee. If you feel the pain in the outside of the knee it s obvious that the pain is coming from the hamstring tendon, but if it s behind the knee it s difficult to tell because the hamstring tendon goes deep into the knee. The pain will be at its worst when you try to straighten your leg out, where the tendon is forced to stretch. You will also feel increased pain when you try to twist your foot or point your toes at your knees. Often the entire back of the knee is swollen, but in its early stages hamstring tendonitis will only swell around the outer area of the hamstring tendon.

Patellar Tendon

The correct name for the knee cap is the patellar. Patellar tendonitis is one of the most common forms of tendonitis and the most common form around the knee joint. The patellar tendon starts behind the patellar and extends down to the tendons in the lower leg. So if you were to look at your knee from the front, the quadriceps tendon enters the knee at the top behind the knee cap and the patellar tendon extends from behind the knee cap down to the lower leg area. When you have patellar tendonitis you will feel the pain just below your knee cap or behind your knee cap. You will probably feel the pain whenever you move your knee, in any direction. Sometimes you may hear a popping or grinding sound as you move your knee around. This is because the area is inflamed and the tendon does not have enough room to move.

So, the important points to note from this article are that there is three types of tendonitis that can affect the knee; quadriceps tendonitis, hamstring tendonitis and patellar tendonitis. These are three separate tendons. If you need any more advice about how to treat tendonitis see the links below. Tendonitis can be treated without seeing a doctor, but first you must accurately diagnose which tendon is affected. The next article I will write will be about treating tendonitis symptoms.

Add all the best features on your Myspace account

The best way to make the Myspace account look attractive is to host a number of features on them including the images, documents, text files, video and personal audio files, which will be liked by everybody.

Some times, it is important that the web page is well designed containing all the desired features. The most important feature in the web page is the background of Myspace. It could feature a number of add on specialties such as the images of the user and his families and friends. However, to build the page, the background is important. The background can be designed by the user on own or use the tools defined on the desktop to create the Myspace account. However, if these tools are not available the, the user could use the tools on the Internet. Try the popular search engines such as Yahoo! and Google to trace the tools. The first and foremost requirement of a myspace page is the background that will form the base. For instance, once the background is defined, features and color schemes can be brought on them using the tools. The background can be accessed from the Internet. The background can be sought for payment of a prescribed fee or for free by downloading them from the Internet sites dedicated to the development of Myspace page.

Apart from the routine features, the Myspace account user can opt for plenty of background options that can be changed almost on a daily basis. However, frequent changes to the background of the Myspace account page mean lack of consistency. If there has to be adequate traffic to the site of the Myspace, then the background should be consistent for it to reach those seeking community and social life friends. The background can be downloaded from various sites for free. The background comes with various themes and color combinations. For instance, the background comes in all the basic colors to which more colors can be added by the users. The background color combination can be customized by the user without altering the character of the myspace account. For instance, if the background is just blue, a number of colors and combinations can be worked with the base as the blue. New color combinations can also be experimented. The tools necessary to carry out the experimentation are also available on the Internet site. Just follow the instructions provided by the site to make the adjustments of the background.

The instructions are basic and can be followed by all basic knowledge acquired persons. If you want to download paid backgrounds, there are separate sites for them. They will offer thousands of preset templates.

It is very common for Myspace users to add a host of features on their accounts. It will not only improve the aesthetics of the page, but also enhance the vigor and color. For instance, you could add falling objets. The cursor could be animated and linked to any subject of your choice. You can download all this stuff from the Internet absolutely free. It costs nothing but time to improve the Myspace account.

Discover the Greatest Secret of Foreclosure - Overage

Dave Dinkel Finance/Real Estate 2008-04-21
View Detail

Possibly one of the best kept secrets in the foreclosure industry is "overage". Overage is the amount of money left over after a foreclosure auction when the buyer has paid more than the lender's final judgment. This money can be as little as a few dollars or as much as millions of dollars.

Depending on which state the homeowner lives in, his foreclosure sale will be conducted by a sheriff, a trustee, or a county clerk of the court. As prescribed by law, the person in charge of the auction will sell the property to the public with "open outcry bidding" until the property is sold or redeemed by the lender. The location is usually on the courthouse steps or similar convenient place that is readily accessible to the public.

Normally the first bid on a property is by the primary lender who bids his final judgment amount as awarded by the county court plus $100. The next bid will come from an interested party to the property such as a junior lien holder or an investor who believes there is equity in the property. These bids will continue until the last bid, which wins the property.

Let's assume the final judgment on a property is $100,000 and the bank bids $100,100 and some bystanders start bidding until the final bid is $120,000. The lender submits his final judgment documents to the county clerk and the winning bidder must bring in cash anywhere from the same day to 30 days later, depending on state and county laws. Once the funds are in the courthouse and any redemption period has passed the lender gets his $100,000 and the buyer gets a deed to his property. A redemption period is a specific period of time from 1 day to 454 days, where the foreclosed homeowner can return with money to get his property back if he pays the buyer his costs plus fees and expenses. In some states there is no redemption period.

The clerk of the court has taken in $120,000 plus some transfer fees and paid out $100,000 and has a $20,000 credit in his bank account. The homeowner is entitled to this "overage" money. The homeowner has to make a claim to the county clerk and the court usually reviews these claims and awards the homeowner his money. This is an ideal world scenario, but in the real world, the homeowner may not know he has money coming to him and these funds eventually become the county's money.

Here is what has happened - a homeowner is approached by a person one or two days before the foreclosure sale and is offered $100 for a deed to his home. If the homeowner knows he can't stop his foreclosure sale and redemption is not possible, he views the $100 as free money. The buyer pays $100 and proceeds to go to the auction and perhaps even puts in a bid or two to get the price higher. If he won by accident, he can renege on the bid and it reverts to the last bidder. Let's look at the above example where the overage was $20,000, which is a very common amount. The "new" homeowner makes claim to the court and his $100 investment becomes $20,000.

This practice was and is very common in good real estate markets and where the state hasn't passed legislation to stop this practice. It is not illegal in many states and even in the ones where it is illegal, the states allow some form of "commission" or fee to be paid to a person who brings in the seller to reclaim his overage. At one courthouse I frequent for auctions, there is a group of 4 - 6 individuals gathering the data from the clerk's sales to use for later sending out letters to sellers to claim their overage. The usual fee is 10% of the total amount and can be very lucrative because the average overage is about $21,800.

What does this mean to a homeowner in foreclosure? It means that despite what you may think your home is worth, it could be sold at auction for more than is owed to his former lender and he is entitled to whatever money is remaining - the overage. So don't sell what you think is a worthless deed because on average it could be worth over $20,000.

Occasionally, the lender will get a final judgment against a homeowner by appraisal and not by sale because this is allowed in some states. The homeowner should always challenge this appraisal and have the judgment reduced if the property sells for more than the final judgment amount later. The moral to this story is that even in the worst of foreclosure situations, the loss of your home, the homeowner still has a chance to make money.

Black Jack.Conditions Are Getting Worse, But The Way To Win Will Always Remain.

ArthurP. Recreation Sports/Gambling Casinos 2008-05-04
View Detail
One of the best ways of foreseeing the future is to understand the human nature. Our needs, hopes, problems and dreams are often the basis for our future making. The nature of the human being is one of the most important ingredients in a complicated gambling business. Each of the parties - a casino and a gambler, long to win money from each other. And the growing strain will determine the future of the game.

Blackjack before 1962:
Before publication of the classic book "Beat The Dealer" by Edward O. Thorp in 1962 no single player had ever suspected of such a thing as the Basic Strategy. Everyone used one's own mixture of superstitions concerning the way in which one or the other hand had to play. Plus, some experience gained while playing at home in the kitchen. Excluding a small number of professional card-players who intuitively presupposed that their overbalance would be more if there were more bowers left in a pack, practically none won in blackjack. Naturally, casinos felt quite comfortable under such conditions. Till 1962 blackjack was not very popular, though percentagewise the profit rate was exclusively high.

The next decade: from 1962 till 1972:
After publication of the book by Thorp the situation changed radically. When the book mounted the peak of sales, became a bestseller, and the professor Thorp became an internationally famous personality, casinos were terrified that thus everyone could learn the system of Thorp and would start beating casinos winning huge amounts of money.

The results of this panic are well-known. The majority of casinos cardinally changed the blackjack rules creating even a larger overbalance in comparison with the previous set of rules. These introductions were effective a few weeks only as the majority of casinosâ€TM clients simply refused to play a game with such bad rules. Subordinating to the law of supply and demand casinos had to quickly restore traditional rules for all. After this gamblers started immediately to play again, more than that in considerably larger quantities.

The popularity of Thorp's book played into the hands of casinos. Blackjack started to attract crowds of people who thought they could "beat a dealer" only after they had read one book.

But the fact remained that casinos' visitors continued to lose the same amounts of money while playing blackjack as before. Only the number of gamblers increased a hundred times. The majority of those who had read the book simply didn't understand the way the calculation of tens given in the book worked, and those who got to the bottom didnâ€TMt take enough pains so as to master the system of calculation from A to Z. Casinos observed in surprise the incredibly increased profits.

Reedition of the book in 1966 gave a reader a simpler calculation system. Over that period of time a number of books on blackjack were published. The game gathered pace. Casinos were setting more and more tables. Blackjack was becoming the most popular game in casinos having outrun the previous leader craps.

Blackjack of the 70s:
The classic book "Playing Blackjack as a Business" by Lawrence Revere is responsible for further increase in popularity of the game in the 70s to a great extent. Revere published a shortened version of his systems at the beginning of 1969, but by 1972 already thousands of copies of the book were sold out. Revere republished an extended version of the book offering his simple and effective systems of the game which increased blackjack popularity even more.

Also the book "Winning Blackjack" by Stanley Roberts, was in the right place at the right time, in addition the author appeared in a number of radio and TV-shows. Roberts invested a considerable amount of money into advertising of his book making a splash.

Casinos were once again overcome by the fit of paranoia. They started to suspect that the systems developed with the help of research methods could considerably influence their profits. Casinos started to introduce a multi-pack blackjack instead of a one-pack blackjack to struggle against the system game.

At the beginning of the 70s a lot of scientists, mathematicians, university professors and other "intellectuals" started to write books about blackjack. Some of them developed their own cards' calculation systems. One of the most popular and effective systems - Hi-Opt I, was developed in 1974 with the help of computer programs created by Julian Brown with participation of an anonymous postgraduate of a large Canadian university.

A lot of professional gamblers transferred from the Revere system to the Hi-Opt I system because of the relative simplicity and effectiveness of the latter one. A lot of ordinary gamblers started to use the system together with the basic strategy. These two systems evidently made the biggest impact upon casinos' profits because of their use by professionals. Roberts' systems were more often used by amateurs.

Kenneth Uston, teams and Great Horror:
Kenneth Uston noticed sometime at the end of 1976 that he was amazed by the way how effective the simplest systems of Hi-Opt I type could be. In Uston's book "Big Player" the way how Uston and his companions won together more than a million of dollars playing blackjack is described. Later on his teams transferred from very complicated systems to the simplest of Hi-Opt I type. Uston was thrown out of a few big casinos of Las Vegas, and he filed lawsuit against them for a total amount of 80 million dollars.

With the arrival of Uston the whole new era of blackjack began. Casinos were once again frightened that teams could win huge amounts of money in blackjack. Nearly at once some casinos did away with a one- and two-pack blackjack transferring to 4-, 6- and 8-pack ones. For an average gambler blackjack became too difficult. Plus, casinos started to cut most cards out of play - to two packs. As has been mentioned by Roberts in one of his articles, such practice was at the very least doubtful. By the way, the fact itself of availability of cards which didn't enter the game caused new kinds of crooked gambling connected with withdrawal and addition of cards.

Casinos up to now change the number of packs and the extent of cutting, and compare levels of profits, thus balancing rules. In any case, rules are extremely difficult for gamblers in the USA, especially beginners.

The nightmare continues:
The funniest thing is that gamblers' thoughts are not rigid. Uston's teams were followed by Keith Taft with his pocket computer for blackjack which played better than any profs in the world. The court of Nevada State broke the record of the USA on the quickness of adoption of statute on use of computers in casinos. Up to five years with confiscation in the current situation, though Taft and his advocates were sure of the unconstitutionality of that law.

Forbade the computer? There appeared Tommy Hyland and his most complicated systems of tracking. A new headache for casinos... To worsen the cutting, introduce more packs and make the procedure of riffle even longer. To invent shuffle-machines!

Stanford Wong was the first to outwit these shuffle-machines. The most important thing was to know how they worked. Poor casinos didn't know what to do. These machines cost rather a lot.

Perhaps new varieties would help? Spanish 21, Super-fan 21, 6:5 blackjack, "Open" blackjack, Blackjack-switch, Pontoon... With every introduction there was one problem: either no one played it at all or profs immediately found the way to beat it. Tournaments? Old Wong created teams especially for tournament struggle. Every new rule was calculated and intensively looked into a week in advance. The development of the Internet caused quick information distribution.

Further on the whole pleiad of gamblers of the contemporary generation came on stage. Wong, Sneider, Anderson, Dogerty, Shlesinger and heaps of people who were occupied with theory and practical aspects of the game. Mathematical models of the game were worked out. Texts on Blackjack were published in scientific reviews.

Finally, up to the present moment a small number of professionals still win in blackjack. And will win in the future. Some profs transfer to more complicated systems which are plentiful (let's say, Hi-Opt II was published as far back as 1976). New methods and techniques are being developed.

There is no doubt that it will get still more and more difficult to win in blackjack. However, there difficulties only make gambling wits work harder and harder. Right away new game systems are being worked out in many heads and at many computers of the world.

It is important to understand that gamblers always have a hope. They can change games. They can finally read a textbook on the theory of probability. They can read the same books themselves. They can spend even more money on the newest technologies. However, I assure You, there will always be a way to beat them.

BlackJack.Conditions are getting worse, but the way to win will always remain.

Before publication of the classic book “Beat The Dealer by Edward O.

The popularity of Thorpâ€TMs book played into the hands of casinos. Blackjack started to attract crowds of people who thought they could “beat a dealerâ€ only after they had read one book.

But the fact remained that casinosâ€TM visitors continued to lose the same amounts of money while playing blackjack as before. Only the number of gamblers increased a hundred times. The majority of those who had read the book simply didnâ€TMt understand the way the calculation of tens given in the book worked, and those who got to the bottom didnâ€TMt take enough pains so as to master the system of calculation from A to Z.

The classic book “Playing Blackjack as a Business by Lawrence Revere is responsible for further increase in popularity of the game in the 70s to a great extent. Revere published a shortened version of his systems at the beginning of 1969, but by 1972 already thousands of copies of the book were sold out. Revere republished an extended version of the book offering his simple and effective systems of the game which increased blackjack popularity even more.

Also the book “Winning Blackjack by Stanley Roberts, was in the right place at the right time, in addition the author appeared in a number of radio and TV-shows.

At the beginning of the 70s a lot of scientists, mathematicians, university professors and other “intellectualsâ€ started to write books about blackjack. Some of them developed their own cardsâ€TM calculation systems.

These two systems evidently made the biggest impact upon casinosâ€TM profits because of their use by professionals. Roberts' systems were more often used by amateurs.

Kenneth Uston, teams and Great Horror:
Kenneth Uston noticed sometime at the end of 1976 that he was amazed by the way how effective the simplest systems of Hi-Opt I type could be. In Ustonâ€TMs book “Big Player“the way how Uston and his companions won together more than a million of dollars playing blackjack is described.

By the way, the fact itself of availability of cards which didnâ€TMt enter the game caused new kinds of crooked gambling connected with withdrawal and addition of cards.

Ustonâ€TMs teams were followed by Keith Taft with his pocket computer for blackjack which played better than any profs in the world.

A new headache for casinos… To worsen the cutting, introduce more packs and make the procedure of riffle even longer. To invent shuffle-machines!

Stanford Wong was the first to outwit these shuffle-machines. The most important thing was to know how they worked. Poor casinos didnâ€TMt know what to do. These machines cost rather a lot.

Perhaps new varieties would help? Spanish 21, Super-fan 21, 6:5 blackjack, “Open blackjack, Blackjack-switch, Pontoon… With every introduction there was one problem: either no one played it at all or profs immediately found the way to beat it.

To Prepare Homebrew Diesel With the Help of the Fresh Vegetable Cooking Oil

Muna wa Wanjiru Technology/Technology 2008-01-20

Biodiesel is arguably the best alternative for the petroleum fuel. It can be used as fuel in diesel engines. The reason for it being called as the biodiesel is that it is prepared from the biodegradable material. You also have a choice to use it in its pure form or you can then blend it with petroleum diesel.

Homebrew diesel is quite easy to prepare. Still you should take the proper care by getting the proper equipments as well as the proper clothing. The following is the method to prepare homebrew diesel with the help of the fresh vegetable cooking oil, but before you start you will need the following things;
* A blender with a glass jar;
* A weight measurement scale;
* One quart jar;
* One hand pump;
* Fresh vegetable oil;
* One liquid measuring cup;
* Sodium hydroxide;
* Methanol;

Now before starting, let all the material get warm to at least 1310 F. Then put on the necessary shielding equipments like the gloves, goggles, respirator, and so on. Take one cup of methanol in the blender. Put 3.4 grams of sodium hydroxide and add to the methanol in the blender. Cover the blender and blend the mixture for about 5 minutes at low speed. You will now find that the mixture in the blender is sodium methoxide. This is a strong base and you should avoid coming in contact with the mixture.

Now, add one quart of fresh vegetable cooking oil into the mixture in the blender and with all due precautions, blend them at a low speed for half an hour. Now let the mixture to set at normal room temperature for a minimum of 8 hours. You will find that the mixture has now two layers. One of them is alight coloured and is floating on top of the other layer, a dark coloured layer. The dark coloured layer is called the glycerol, while the other lighter fluid is the biodiesel. You can now pump out the diesel with the help of the hand pump.

Homebrew diesel is quite easy to prepare and it also gives you another option. You can also prepare biodiesel with the help of the used or the waste biodiesel. The waste oil is more acidic than the fresh vegetable oil and hence can be more efficient. Because of the presence of the higher fatty acids, the amount of catalyst required is more. To determine how much of the catalyst is required, you will have to do the titration.

After the titration, you can determine the amount of the catalyst required and then you may proceed. You will have to utilize the whole amount of sodium hydroxide. When this is done proceed with the same steps to prepare the biodiesel as followed in the method to prepare the biodiesel from fresh cooking oil. After the completion of the process, you will find that the there are more layers present than the first one. The layer which is white in colour and is in between the glycerol and the diesel is the soap. It is a by product and comes even if there is minute amount of water in the oil.
