When we speak of Chinese herbs, we are technically referring to herbs sourced straight from China. Chinese herbs are commonly employed for Chinese cooking but may also have medicinal properties that make them ideal to use in Traditional Chinese Medicine too. There are a mind-boggling number of the known Chinese herbs (more than three hundred, at last count) which have reputedly been used in various ways for around 2000 years or so. Generally, Chinese herbs might either be boiled as a hot tea for at least an hour for the patient to sip, or the Chinese herbs could be incorporated into honey bound pills. The most common purpose for using Chinese herbs is for their health benefits, since these Chinese herbs can reportedly make the human body stronger when the herbs are consumed. Chinese herbs which have developed a strong following are Ginseng, salvia, rhubarb, rehmannia, peony, ephedra sinica, licorice, hoelen, ginger, coptis, cinnamon bark, cinnamon, bupleurum, atractylodes, astragalus, and Dong Quai. Among this list of commonly used Chinese herbs, the one which many might be very familiar with is Ginseng (because of the many commercial products that claim to use this herb as an ingredient.) Much of the Ginseng being used for these commercial products would be made up of the Red Panax ginseng variety which is more affordable than the more highly prized Wild Ginseng variety. Though not technically part of the Chinese herbs category, there is what is known as American ginseng too, which was employed by Native Americans for their own type of health care treatments. Are Chinese herbs safe to use? Those who strongly believe in Traditional Chinese Medicine would probably be very convinced that Chinese herbs are very effective, but anyone who is trying out Chinese herbs for the first time (as part of Chinese cuisine or as part of a Traditional Chinese Medicine program of treatment) should always practice caution before ingesting any Chinese herbs. This is because the Chinese herbs that might work for one person might not necessarily work for another. More alarming is the prospect that certain Chinese herbs might even be dangerous for some individuals to use, especially if they happen to be allergic to those Chinese herbs, or if the person is on some commercial drug preparation that might contraindicate with some Chinese herbs. If you are planning to use Traditional Chinese Medicine to complement your conventional medical treatment program, you should always consult your physician first before taking any Chinese herbs on your own. This is for your own protection. Though admittedly various Chinese herbs (like ginger which even Westerners are very familiar with in these modern times) are probably safe to consume on a regular basis, many Chinese herbs are unfamiliar to Western medical practitioners so it is prudent to incorporate such Chinese herbs into your diet and medical treatment slowly – maybe even one at a time – to observe the effects on your body.

In any language, regardless of which one, be it English, German, Spanish, Hindi, Zulu – even Chinese – they share 3 common, powerful traits – ChinaSpeak traits. Understanding what these powerful traits are, is your passport to surge forward in your language ability regardless of whether you’re just beginning to learn Chinese or you’re already well on your ChinaSpeaking journey. A word of advice before you read on: These points are simple. I believe that it’s the simple things in life, like in nature, that are often the most impactful. It’s very easy to gloss over these 3 ChinaSpeak traits and have that little voice in your head say “Yeah rriiiight! – only three?” and after learning these 3 golden keys, say “...Is that it?!” If you believe that little voice in your head, you might as well save your time now and not continue reading on. Still here? Wise choice. So what Exactly are these 3 simple yet powerful ChinaSpeak traits? I want you to imagine your house. I assume it’s standing and can withstand the wind, the elements so WHY is it standing? Because it has a strong foundation, right? Strong walls. Let’s say that you live in a cottage-styled, brick house. Your strong walls are made of bricks. One of the 3 simple yet powerful ChinaSpeak traits to powering forward in learning any language is just like your house – made up of strong Bricks. #1 Powerful Language Trait – Bricks Bricks are the solid things that make up our wall. The type of ‘brick’ depends on the situation that we’re in. Are we in the desert? Deep in the humid, tropical jungle? In the arctic? In each of those settings, different building materials, different ‘bricks’ needed to be used, wouldn’t you agree? For example, in the desert, it’ll be sand, tundra, farm animal manure. In the tropical jungle, it’ll be logs and wooden planks. In the arctic, you guessed it, ice blocks. It is the same thing in language where vocabulary are our ‘bricks’. The type of vocabulary that we use very much depends on our situation. Are we negotiating in a business setting? Having a chat with friends over dinner? Bargaining and haggling with the street vendor in one of the open-air markets? In each of those situations, particular bricks, particular words are used and not usually used elsewhere. I can’t really imagine you referring to your mother when you’re negotiating in business...or asking for a fried rice when shopping for clothing. So HOW do you make the most of ChinaSpeak Trait #1 – Bricks? Look at your particular situation - ask yourself and write down: WHAT kind of words would I use in this situation? If it makes things easier – imagine, in your native language, what kind of words would you use in that situation? Be free with yourself and let it all flow out, whatever comes out until nothing else appears. Take a 7 minute break – get up and out, into the sun, outside, take some deep breaths, walk around. Then ask yourself Again right then and there... What would I Say or Hear in such a situation? You’ll find that the thoughts will start flowing again. Compile all these words that you’ve gathered for your particular situation, get their Chinese equivalent and you can start learning those you feel most relevant. Happy ChinaSpeaking!

Chinese calligraphy began in 213 B.C. by Prime Minister Li Szu who created over 3000 characters to be used by the Chinese scholars. The five different styles, zhuan-shu, li-shu, kai-shu,xing-shu, and cao-shu, are all forms used in Chinese calligraphy. One word can be written in different ways depending on the style and the execution of that style. The word can be fluid, formal, exact, whimsicalit all is in the hand of the application and unique personal deliverance of the strokes. Many masters from the beginning of origin to now have left their work for us to enjoy as art today. When you begin to study calligraphy, you will adopt a style which is distinctive to you and perfect the strokes as your own form of self expression. The artistic value of Chinese calligraphy is in the skill and method is exclusive to the particular creative ability delivering it. When well done, the words interpretations are more leaning to abstract art, then anything else. This graceful serene art form called Chinese calligraphy is a greek word meaning "beautiful writing" and is seen everywhere from art galleries to restaurants, and tattoo shops. Which takes me back to the search for the perfect Chinese word. Once I had the words I wanted to immortalize on my back, after learning so much more about Chinese calligraphy, it occurred to me I would have to choose a form as well. What kind of brush strokes would best represent the meaning of the words I had chose? I could go with a more classic, traditional style used in ancient times or even something called the "grass" style, looking more whimsical to me. I had not realized the depth of expression involved not only in searching a tattoo, but the actual essence, personality, and layers upon layers of meaning associated with this beautiful art. As you learn Chinese calligraphy, you will notice that traditionally certain materials are used in a particular way to produce the eloquent results. The Chinese use special brushes made of rabbit hair or sheep. One brush is for sharpness in line drawing, and the other for rhythm and depth all equaling to the subject's inner self. Also used in Chinese calligraphy, is a thick ground ink combined with water and applied to Chinese paper (also called rice paper) or silk. This form shows depth, contrast, density and texture and creates a rhythmic balance. When the Chinese apply color to this art form, it is to show the subject's characteristics or moods. The more I searched on Chinese calligraphy, the more infatuated I became of the work, yet I was not getting closer to choosing a tattoo because, quite honestly, each word or quotation inspired a feeling in me. There were simply too many I identified with on a deeper, more spiritual level. After skipping across the top of the Chinese calligraphy history and art information, you can decide to take the process further by actively seeking out places or internet sites offering a more thorough course in the art of Chinese calligraphy. Many instructions remain basic in it's course, while others incorporate reading or speaking Chinese as well. Whether you embark on learning to write one character well to display as art on your wall, or you continue with the craft to put words together, even learning to read Chinese, it is rewarding. The more you unravel the mystery living inside each of these characters, it seems to create added curiosity and a desire to keep going. Chinese calligraphy is a worthy and nice experience to launch into. Expect Countless hours of enjoyable practice into an ancient, respected, old world art. If you wish to learn Chinese calligraphy, then by all meanscontinue on.

Using credible, influential speaking has always been an essential part of her job. You see, she as a business analyst. Unlike several people in her line of work, she got concerned in it not because of her love of explanation or social relations, but because of her analytical skills which she wished to pertain to other people's business problems. The problem is that analysis is only one component of the equation in industry consulting. Sure, you need to be able to suggest the right changes in the company, but you also need to be able to suggest them in the exact way. She has never been capable to remove the fear of public speaking, and it has held she's back at every turn. Don't get her wrong – she still seems to make a good livelihood, and she's relatively happy with her job. Even so, being able to build convincing speeches would propel her vocation forward in a way like never before. She used to believe of the difficulty was organizing the information along the correct lines. She studied convincing essay topics online to see how the experts prepared their thoughts. She would copy them, write her own, and do the whole thing she could to imitate the style. She would even listen to people making convincing speeches at conferences in an effort to know their notion processes. On the other hand, it never helped her. If anything, her convincing speech skills just got bad. Because she was trying to speak in someone else's voice, She would be fewer confident than before when she tried to make a convincing speech. It seemed like she would never obtain it. Lastly, one day, she finally figured out what the difficulty was. She had been going about her convincing speech dilemma all wrong! Her problem was not writing a convincing speech, but learning how to speak to people. It seems noticeable in retrospect, but at the time it came as an exposure. She could make a convincing speech if she could just nurture to be comfortable. She took classes in becoming a self-assured speaker, and within a year she was much better at doing it. Even though she never will be capable to make a convincing speech with the easiness of a skilled salesman, She can hold her own nowadays. She have met with more achievement than ever before in her career, and she go on with to advance. It is miraculous what delivering a convincing speech can do!

Imagine having to give a speech where the objective isn't merely to inform but actually to win over the audience as well! Not dissimilar to having a debate perhaps or trying to persuade a sceptical audience over to your point of view. How should you approach this? Without doubt the first step is to understand your audience and learn what they will like to hear. This is absolutely vital if you need to win them over on something that they will naturally be against; what in fact you are doing is selling them an unpalatable concept which is then made palatable by offering them "a sweetener" where this sweetener sounds greater than the sourness of the original bad news. As an illustrative example, imagine that you need to inform a group of very busy processing clerks that on top of their work they all have to learn a new system in which to process their data, and that there is nothing in it for them. Imagine telling them this in a seminar and you can hear the groans screaming out at you before you've begun to speak. It is inevitable that a workforce with reduced morale would result in a tailing off of productivity as well as individuals looking to move to different companies. The project of implementing the new system will not be easy. But it doesn't have to be like that! Find out what will please the audience Nobody implements a new system for fun (well maybe some organisations do!) so there must be a purpose in the new system and even if there are no direct benefits to the people having to learn the new system there must be indirect benefits such as greater profitability for the company, better management information that will enable the company to survive/expand /branch out into new markets. Whatever it is there will be something that you can use to persuade the audience to be right there with you. Convince convince convince! Now is the time to prepare your persuasive speech. Firstly, write down your specified objective (in this example, how you will use the overall benefits of the new system to ensure that these will lead to an upbeat mood in the audience by convincing them that, despite their extra workload, this really is very good news for them). It is imperative that at no time do you encourage your audience to wallow in the prospects of additional work; while you point out that there will be more work (no point trying to cover it up or dismiss it as it will emerge as a fact eventually and failure to be honest about it will probably lead to monumental problems in the future), it is only in terms of saying that this is a necessary pre-requisite for us all to reap the benefits which you then enthusiastically describe, especially those which impact the audience. In addition look out for other selling points - many organisations are so poorly run that finding things to offer the audience is usually pretty easy; for example, in this case you may well find promising to involve the clerks in the project so that they feel they are co-owners as opposed to enforced participants will do wonders for morale and willingness to take on the new system. Automation of some of the reports could reduce the workload of many staff and thus free up time to explore innovations. Steer the audience from their point of view to yours The same principles would be used if you wished to attempt to persuade a liberal minded audience that life time incarceration, with no chance of parole, should be introduced for say muggers. Stating that anyone should be locked up for the rest of their life with no chance of proving that they have reformed will naturally inflame a liberal audience, but this same audience would probably agree with you that everything possible must be done to avoid innocent people being mugged in the street. At this point you would have the audience on your side but you would probably lose them very quickly if you stated that part of the solution is lifetime incarceration for offenders. However, if you emphasised that the offenders needed help and it was your intention to campaign to improve the rehabilitation programmes within prison, coupled with a through review process to ensure that muggers had been rehabilitated prior to release, you would still have the audience on your side. You may well be able to get away with saying that there is a chance that some people are beyond reform and therefore will have to stay in prison for ever - even the most liberal person would surely baulk at releasing a mugger who is almost certain to be looking for a victim upon release; you may well also get away with saying that resources are scarce, that there are many other deserving causes and that, regrettably, rehabilitation services will of necessity not be as widely available as is desirable or necessary. In conclusion Persuasive speaking is really one of understanding the audience's mindset, talking in terms that show you are broadly empathetic to their attitudes and acknowledging that their views are of considerable value which must be fully taken into account when deciding upon an action. Whether it's locking up muggers for life or introducing a new data processing system you will need to convince the audience that the alternatives lead to consequences which that audience will clearly be able to see are worse for everyone including themselves; try and let the audience work it out for themslves otherwise the audience could become scepticle. Persuasive speaking can be achieved by all, as always, the success lies in the preparation. Copyright (c) 2007 The College Of Public Speaking

When I first started playing poker it wasn't the rules that freaked me out; I'm pretty smart, how hard can they be, I figured. Neither was it the strategy; I reckoned that I'd loose a bit, and before I knew it I'd be up to speed and on the ball. No, it was the terminology that got me; I had images of coming to the table and everyone immediately knowing that I didn't have a clue what I was doing, and feeling like an absolute idiot. For that reason, I want to briefly explain some of the most common terminology used in the game; so that no-one else will have to feel the way I did and won't be held back by it. Antes: An ante is used in all table games and is the money that each player must put into the pot in order to buy into the game. The ante is a set amount for the table and this will not change. The money is paid before the first cards are dealt; anyone who does not pay the ante will not be dealt in. Big blinds and little blinds: Tournaments don't have antes per se because everyone has already bought into the hand, so to speak, by buying into the tournament. The buy in of a tournament negates the need for an ante as the pot is already set. The big blind and little blind therefore is an alternative to the ante and involves one player on the table paying a sum equal to the minimum bet and another paying a smaller sum equal to half the minimum bet. The big blind is paid by the person in the second seats to the left of the dealer and the little blind is paid by the person sat directly to the left of the dealer. When there are 2 players left the dealer is the little blind. Board: This refers to the community cards, the cards that all can see and use. There will not be a board in all games, only in Hold'em games such as Flop: This is the name given to the first three community cards. These cards are turned all at one go. Turn: This is the fourth community card. The Turn is flipped by itself and is followed by a betting round. This card is sometimes also referred to as the 'fourth street'. River: The River is the fifth, and final of the community cards to be flipped over. Once the River is flipped there is only one more betting round. Showdown: This is the show and tell of the Caribbean Hold'em game. Following the final betting round after the River, all active players must show their hands; the best hand out of the 5 community cards and the 2 personal cards takes the pot. These are just the very basics of Caribbean Hold'em terminology; you will find that once you are familiar with a few terms you will see them cropping up in other games too. One step at a time and you will be speaking the lingo before you know it.

To help us relax there are different types of massage treatments that can be used. These various treatments can be divided into two schools of treatment. You will find Western based massage treatments and Eastern massage treatments. The Chinese massage is just one example of the different Eastern massages. In the Chinese massage there are different variations that will help with relaxing the tense muscles of the body. Some of these Chinese massage techniques also have other healing benefits for the body. In all of the Chinese massages the person who is having the massage will need to wear loose clothing. Chinese massages are used to help with the healing of different medical complaints that can afflict people. The different branches of Chinese massage therapy as it is known are designed to help with the healing process. The first of the Chinese massage techniques is that of Amno. This is a press and rub technique that is used to rejuvenate your health. It is also used to maintain the body in top physical condition. The next technique is that of Tuina. In Tuina which is a push and grab technique, internal disorders and muscle problems are treated via this massage. This Chinese massage method is also used for treat injuries and joint pains. For babies the Chinese have a massage treatment that works quite well. This Chinese massage is called Infant Tuina. The pressure points that are used for this massage are different than the ones that are widely used. As a home remedy type of Chinese massage you will find Dian Xue. This particular Chinese massage is used by acupuncturists when they encounter situations where they can’t use the acupuncture needles. Dian Xue is known to be a point and press technique in Chinese massages. The final part of the Chinese massage techniques is that of Wai Qi Liao Fa. This massage technique is used only after the trainee to Chinese massage therapy has studied for years with a Qigong master. In the Wai Qi Liao Fa Chinese massage technique the healing is accomplished by direct contact with the life energy that is called Qi. All of these Chinese massage therapies are used to treat various conditions in the body that are the result of blocked Qi. In the practice of Chinese massage the idea that the Qi and the body’s mental and physical conditions are linked. As it is believed that the body needs to be healed on three different levels you should see a trained Chinese massage therapist. With a Chinese massage therapist you can gain the best benefits to your health as a result of having a Chinese massage. The next time that you find yourself in some pain as part of your day to day work you might want to consult with a Chinese masseuse to have a Chinese massage worked on your aching body.

Chinese food holds a popular place among the entire population of the world. You can find a Chinese restaurant in every major city and in many smaller areas of the world as well. Why is Chinese food so popular? Is Chinese food healthy? What is the history of Chinese food? The History of Chinese Food The history of Chinese food1 is an interesting one. Unlike many cultures the Chinese believe that the preparation of food is an art and not simply a craft. The art of cooking Chinese food can include dishes and food preparation techniques which are difficult to develop and may require the expertise of a chef with lots of experience. One such technique is noodle pulling (scroll down to the bottom of the page to learn more about this technique). Noodle pulling requires skill and lots of practice and results in a delicious noodle dish. This article will refer to noodle pulling later on, but for now, let’s go back to the history of Chinese food. Chinese food and the way it is prepared is very much influenced by the two major philosophies, which influence the entire Chinese culture. These dominant philosophies are Confucianism and Taoism. Both have these philosophies have influenced the way that the Chinese people cook and the way that they enjoy their food. Confucianism and Chinese Cuisine Confucius was the man behind the Confucianism beliefs. Among many other standards Confucius established standards for proper table etiquette and for the appearance and taste of Chinese food. One of the standards set by Confucius (you might have noticed this at an authentic Chinese restaurant) is that food must be cut into small bite size pieces before serving the dish. This is a custom that is definitely unique to the Chinese culture. Knives at the dinner table are also considered to be a sign of very poor taste by those who embrace Confucianism beliefs. The standards of quality and taste that Confucius recommended required the perfect blend of ingredients, herbs and condiments--a blend which would result in the perfect combination of flavor. Confucius also emphasized the importance of the texture and color of a dish, and taught that food must be prepared and eaten with harmony. Interestingly enough, Confucius was also of the opinion that an excellent cook must first make an excellent matchmaker. Taoism and Chinese Cuisine Those who follow the Taoism beliefs focus on the health benefits of particular foods vs. the presentation of the same. Taoists search for foods that will increase their health and longevity. They search for foods that have healing powers. Many times these benefits were often referred to as ‘life giving powers’. For instance, the Chinese found that ginger, which can be considered to be a garnish or a condiment was found to be a remedy for upset stomachs or a remedy for colds. Is Chinese Food Healthy? Chinese food, when authentic is probably the healthiest food in the world. Some restaurants, which are not authentic, prepare their menu with highly saturated fats or with meats that contain unhealthy amounts of animal fat. These Chinese restaurants are not recommended and they are both neither authentic nor healthy. Good Chinese food however, is prepared and cooked with poly-unsaturated oils. Authentic Chinese food does not require the use of milk-fat ingredients such as cream, butter or cheese. Meat is used, but not in abundance, which makes it easy for those who love authentic Chinese food to avoid high levels of animal fat. Many believe that authentic Chinese food is really the ideal diet. Chinese Restaurants in Every Part of the Nation Whether it is in a Tennessee Chinese Restaurant to a New York Chinese restaurant you are going to find culinary dishes that are both healthy and delicious. For business travelers in China, taxis are by far the most popular means of travel within a city. A cab ride is: Air-conditioned Safe Cheap-even in Shanghai, the first 3 km is just 11 RMB, about $1.40. Generally reliable. Most cab drivers in the big cities are reasonably competent, and in Shanghai they have GPS. Here are a few tips to make your China cab ride smooth and convenient: Call a cab by waving your arm, palm down. Do not ride in an unmarked “gypsy” cab. They wait at train stations and other places full of tourists. Stick to cabs owned by a big company, with a working meter, licensed driver, etc. Have your destination clearly written in Chinese characters or at least pinyin with tone marks. If your cell phone displays Chinese characters, have someone send the address in a text message. No cabbies speak English (if they spoke English, they wouldn’t be driving a cab). If you feel the driver is cheating you, or has failed to obey the Rules of Conduct (printed in English on the dashboard or Plexiglas screen), you can call the Complaint Hotline. This also should be clearly visible in the cab. ALWAYS take your receipt. If you feel that you have been cheated, or if you forget some luggage, the receipt is your only lifeline. Chinese cabbies often smoke, spit out the window, or play the radio too loud. This is technically not permitted, and they will stop if you complain. Still, these behaviors are very common in China. Maybe you can use your time in the cab to get accustomed to this. Peter Braden Build your China Office

Not everyone in the world speaks English. China is emerging from a period of stagnation and again taking it's place as one of the great powers of the world. China has become the factory of the world and is moving up the technology food chain. Now products are built, as well as designed in China. To take advantage of this huge economic shift and opportunities, learning Chinese is a great way for your children to have the opportunity to benefit from this change. If their parents speak Chinese, but the children refused to Learn Chinese. Why? Some Children who have native speaking parents refuse to learn Chinese. Their parents are worried about their children's English and focus so much on that, they are willing to let the Chinese go. They start speaking in only English to their children. Unfortunately being truly bilingual can help a child develop their brain in new ways and make it easier to learn other languages. As well as understanding other cultures better, such as why the number 8 is a lucky number in Mandarin, and 4 is not. Common Excuses Some US born Children and even their native parents believe that learning Chinese is a waste of time and is to hard! It's not fun like other studies in the US! And it takes time away from their other studies and video games. Their children have better things to do, and everybody knows English anyway around the world! Learning Characters is to hard. There is software which makes this easier. So why should they learn? What happens if they want to do business in that Giant Market, Full of Opportunities, China? 1. Do they get a Translator because their Chinese is lousy? Because their Chinese school was basically a place for babysitting? That their parents thought it was more important to learn English, so they never taught them Chinese? 2. Do they use their Kindergarten Level Chinese with an accent, or take classes in Chinese as an adult? Hopefully, they won't have an American accent. Or will they ask their parents, Why did you not force me to learn Chinese? It would have helped me so much now! 3. Or are they lucky that their parents took the time to read them Chinese books as Children and spoke to them in Chinese, knowing they would learn English at school anyway, and they now speak Chinese like a native? Or perhaps they had one parent who spoke to them only in English, and another in Mandarin Chinese. ChildBook's Hope We hope number three. The best time for Children to learn another language is as a child before puberty, so they speak like a native and learn very easy. We provide quality books, cd's, and DVD's and other items that are fun and educational for helping children learn more about the Chinese-Children-Educational-Materials-s/61.htm>Chinese Language and Culture. Both for children who have native born speakers in the family, as well as those parents who don't speak Chinese. As parents and owner's of ChildBook.com have made the commitment that our child is being brought up bi-lingual, learning both English and Mandarin. We feel this ability will help our child in the long term, so our child can make the most of the opportunities that life presents. And we have created childbook.com to help other parents. We don't want our daughter to an example of that joke. What is a person who knows three languages? - trilingual. What is a person who knows two languages? - bilingual. What is a person who knows only one language? - American.

Native Speakers for Teaching Chinese On method for those households that don't have a native speaker is hiring of a nanny who speaks Chinese. The NY Times had an article noting the increase in au pairs from China. It is also possible to arrange play dates with other children who are learning Chinese as well as finding a Chinese speaking babysitter. Local universities will often have spouses of Chinese working on Masters and PhD's who are looking for extra income. Another option is finding a local nanny, and there are a number around. If you are in public service, please remember Zoe Baird on the requirements for legally hiring a nanny. Truth to be told, there is a large population of people in the US from China who don't have papers who work as nannies, so be careful. Nannies are also taking care of your children, so picking the right person is extremely important, especially if they live with you. Friends of ours have gone through multiple nannies and it was not a good experience. Online Programs for Teaching Chinese There are also programs to expose Children to Chinese at a young age. I am not aware of any that are online for English speakers at this time. There are online programs for adults learning Chinese as well as native speakers. Private Chinese Schools Traditionally non-public Chinese Schools in the US start teaching children when they are old to sit still and copy characters. Most schools are still using traditional teaching rote teaching methods still used in Taiwan and China. For the most part with children in the US, it does not work due to culture classes. There is a huge amount of independence in children in the US and using boring teaching methods that do not capture the interest of the child so they want to go to school without a lot of parental pushing will end up in failure. With the child being forced to go to school and often treating it as just babysitting, and not learning Chinese. An alternative is finding a school that uses more of a Montessori Method or what is used in ESL where there is a lot of conversation. I was pleasantly surprised by my daughter's public school language teacher who spoke of using this method in the classroom, instead of the traditional focus on grammar in learning many foreign languages. At a young age, I would suggest programs that teach using a lot of singing and other fun activities. Summer Camps Going to a summer camp in a full immersion environment is a great way to learn Chinese! Each year ChildBook publishes the largest list I have found of Summer Chinese Programs. These range from weekend programs in the US to programs that include a boarding school to programs in China and Taiwan. I favor the full immersion process as a great way to Learn Chinese. Chinese Learning Products CD's for Learning Chinese CD's come in two different types. One is products that are 100% Chinese of Chinese-Children-Songs-and-Stories-CD-s-Learning-Chinese-s/33.htm>Chinese Children Songs or stories only in Chinese. Some products include a book of lyrics in Chinese, and other's don't. Other products are designed to teach Chinese and have a booklet with lyrics in English, Pinyin, and Chinese Characters. The teaching Chinese products are both from from the US (the majority) and a series from Singapore. The products for Teaching Chinese are bilingual, so the songs are sung in both Chinese and English. What I like about the CD's is they give a parent a chance to be part of the process where they can Sing Happy Birthday in the Teach Me Chinese CD and Book in both English and Chinese (this series focuses on popular songs in Chinese and English). The other series have specially written songs for Teaching Chinese. The Teach Me Chinese Series has Teacher Guides available. The Sing & Learn Chinese CD & Book includes a track of the songs without words (like Karoke). Let's Sing Chinese is a 3 product series from Singapore that has both familiar songs and new ones. 3 is the most I have seen of any series of Cd's for Teaching Chinese to Children. Video's for Learning Chinese Video's such as from Mei Mei use more of a hands on approach teaching basic Chinese vocabulary and she currently has five video's in her series. From the first one that teaches counting and parts of the body with songs through an approach that children love to later ones that progress such as her Play and Learn Chinese with Mei Mei where an actual Chinese Kindergarten is visited. What is great about this video is it gives your Child the chance to compare their experience and see the differences between their school and the one in the video. From lunch to PE to naps. To select the right video for your child, I recommend reading the reviews (both good and bad). Books for Learning Chinese A great book for those just beginning to Learn Chinese is I Won't Bite. It's a touch and feel book that has Pinyin, Chinese-Books-on-Learning-Chinese-Language-History-Culture-s/20.htm>Chinese Characters, and English. The challenge of using a book is often you need to know how to read Chinese, in order to teach from it. A fun book for exposing Children to Chinese Characters is Long Is A Dragon by Peggy Goldstein A selection of books for Learning Chinese Character Software for Learning Chinese Any day some Software should arrive that has been highly recommended by customers.

With businesses now rushing to People’s Republic of China (Mainland) and many Chinese immigrants establishing their business and life in foreign countries, the influence of Chinese culture is obvious in all the major cities of the world. People’s Republic of People’s Republic of China (Mainland) is experiencing rapid economic transition, one built upon the back of a phenomenal “catch-up”, but which has also triggered a chain of social and cultural changes that will be on display for the world to see as we approach the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The novelty of the new Chinese immigrant speaking fluent English has worn out, and now it is the Westerners that must tackle the language barrier and avoid wearing the tag of speaking broken Mandarin Chinese. While the Chinese people overseas and at home have had to live with their notorious Chinglish, many second-generation Chinese immigrants have shed the image of the broken English and now speak as fluently as the native speakers. There are many reasons why someone want to learn Chinese1. Many second and third generation Chinese immigrants also want to join the club of learning Chinese, because in their swiftness to learn English, they have deserted their own mother tongue – Mandarin Chinese. So what are the top motivations for many of us who want to learn Chinese2? We compiled some top motivations here for you: For the businessmen/businesswomen – the savvy and culturally sensitive generation of business people realize - the advantage of having capturing information and data from the source of origin, thus avoid the ‘Chinese Whisper’ effects. Small businesses and websites have also taken advantage of technology improvements to For translators/interpreters – the influx of immigrants to places such as America, Australia, England and other countries now means that - bring the research of Chinese academics to the Western world, much in the same way that Russian research has been translated and published in Western journals. For interest groups/people – with the loosening of media and technological regulations and restrictions, the Chinese language and culture has been opened up to more interest groups than ever before. People who are fascinated by the - trying to recover their language and culture origins, lost when they were busy trying to integrate with their new environment. Also, second/third generation migrants who have retained their language skills want to give their children a head start by teaching them the language early, and wish to let their children learn Chinese. According to Chinese legend, the twelve animals quarreled one day as to who was to head the cycle of years. The gods were asked to decide and they held a contest: whoever was to reach the opposite bank of the river would be first, and the rest of the animals would receive their years according to their finish. All the twelve animals gathered at the river bank and jumped in. Unknown to the ox, the rat had jumped upon his back. As the ox was about to jump ashore, the rat jumped off the ox's back, and won the race. The pig, who was very lazy, ended up last. That is why the rat is the first year of the animal cycle, the ox second, and the pig last. The Chinese animal signs are a 12-year cycle used for dating the years. They represent a cyclical concept of time, rather than the Western linear concept of time. In the Chinese calendar, the beginning of the year falls somewhere between late January and early February. The Chinese have adopted the Western calendar since 1911, but the lunar calendar is still used for festive occasions such as the Chinese New Year. Many Chinese calendars will print both the solar dates and the Chinese lunar dates. A cultural sidelight of the animal signs in Chinese folklore is that horoscopes have developed around the animal signs, much like monthly horoscopes in the West have been developed for the different moon signs, Pisces, Aries, etc. For example, a Chinese horoscope may predict that a person born in the Year of the Horse would be, cheerful, popular, and loves to compliment others. These horoscopes are amusing, but not regarded seriously by the Chinese people.
