One night I came home from work to find our house in disarray. The pungent scent of urine filled the air. Pillows were scattered everywhere, their stuffing torn out. Vases and other knickknacks were reduced to mere shards of porcelain and glass. Some of my books were ripped to shreds. At first I thought that my apartment had been burglarized but I realized that the burglars couldn't have missed seeing the flat screen television, DVD player and speakers prominently displayed in the living room. The one thing missing was my dog, a large Labrador retriever named Bob. I worriedly searched the rest of the apartment and found nothing else amiss. Upon entering my bedroom, I found Bob under the bed chewing one of my shoes. If that wasn't bad enough, I saw a pile of dog stool right on my pillow. As I scolded him for making a mess, I wondered why a normally well-behaved dog like Bob could make such a mess. That's when I learned about pet separation anxiety. Pet separation anxiety manifests itself in different ways. They can be destructive, as Bob was, or choose to disturb your neighbors with a fit of loud barking and whining. They may also spread their stool and urine in the most unexpected places, such as the inside of your favorite pair of shoes or all over your clothes. They chew and scratch on furniture without compunction. They tend to destroy things that you frequntly use and carry your scent, and they do all these things as soon as you leave them alone. They are also wildly excited to see you when you get back, incessantly demanding your attention. But what can cause this anxiety in our beloved pets? One of the most common reasons is when pets are frequently left alone, they get bored. They may also feel abandoned by their owners. The bad behavior that they manifest is merely a cry for much needed attention. So what can you do about it? Teach your pet to recognize I cues signaling your departure, such as picking up your keys and interact with them on your terms and not when they demand it. Try increasing the amount of exercise that your pet gets, but if your time is limited you may want to consider hiring someone to walk your pet. Add more toys for it to chew. During the hours that you are away at work, you might want to hire a dog sitter or putting your pet in daycare. If you have the space, you can set aside an area for your pet. Crates and pens are available in different sizes and materials. Choose one suitable to the size and strength of your pet. In case of serious separation anxiety cases, consult your veterinarian. They may be able to suggest other available therapies or medication for your pet. You can also consult with pet trainers and do research in print or online for ways on how to train your pet to accept your absence. Internet forums for pet owners can also be a valuable tool for learning effective techniques in handling your pet's separation anxiety. But most of all, treat your pet with love and sensitivity. Remember that your pet is only acting out what it cannot verbalize. With a little help, you and your pet can live an anxiety-free existence.

Virtual Pets The virtual pets also known as the digital pets have mostly taken the place of the real animals like the dog, cats, hamsters and few more similar to it. The virtual pets are artificial human companion and are kept for enjoyment and companionship. Nowadays people prefer a digital pet in the place of real pet. The virtual pets are gaining popularity simply because keeping a real pet is sometimes practically impossible due to lack of time. The pet when added in the family becomes the responsibility of the owner to look after it in every sense. For this real virtual pet cab be the better choice and can give a sense of owning a pet. There are basically three types of virtual pets namely gadget-based virtual pets, web-page based virtual pets and Game –or-application based virtual pet. The gadget-based virtual pets are sold as a self contained, palm size computer. It has a small screen where the image of a pet appears. The buttons on the case are meant for the users to perform different tasks like feeding them, playing with them or washing the pet clean. Pets who are not satisfied with the care taken can emit beeps and sometimes die. Many of the popular websites adopt virtual pets to put on their webpage and use for role playing in chat rooms. In some websites you can become the adoptee and ca adopt a virtual pet for which you will require to have a web page ready for your virtual pet. Some of the sites can also adopt pets to put on a web-page and are revolving around writing for and breeding said pets to create newer, often 'showier' virtual pets. Members of such sites are often encouraged to create their own species of draconic creatures, to adopt from other members, and to breed the various species together. The last one is the Game –or-application based virtual pet that comes in software run on PC or video games consoles. It had powerful computing than with web page or gadget based digital pets, which helps in achieving a higher level of visual effects and interactivity. The advanced technology gives a sense of reality to the virtual pets and some enhance playability. With the advanced video gaming technology the user and interpret the actions of the pet like body language and the facial expressions. The user can have a short term or long term interaction with the pet. In short term interaction the user can touch the pet with the cursor of the mouse and the pet will response to the touch. In long term interaction the users action affect pet's growth, behavior or life span The user starts understanding the needs of the pet through its behavior, which seems natural and nurtures a feeling of developed relationship between the virtual pet and the user. The virtual pets are designed in such a manner that their certain level of autonomy and unpredictability gives a user a sense of reality. The user can interact with the pet and forms a special corner in the heart of the user. The user starts developing attachment for the virtual pet and a sense of responsibility towards it like when it comes having a real pet.

If you’re a serious animal lover like me then there’s a good chance that you have a number of various house pets around your house. You’ll also probably have an intriguing number of other house guests roaming around your house as well. You know what I mean, all the strays and hurt little birds and four legged creatures that you just couldn’t desert. That probably makes you a soft touch where all the extra house guests and your house pets are concerned but you don’t really care. You’re doing what you love to do, looking after animals. So it’s probably a good thing that you went into a veterinary practice early on in your life. That hasn’t stopped you from collecting as many house pets as you can though. In fact you probably have more house pets than you otherwise normally would have, but since your house is adjoined by your practice it doesn’t pose a big problem for you at all. Having such a large number of house pets, you need to be careful about hygiene and spread of disease amongst them. You’ll need to keep a few litter baskets for the cats who deign to call you their pet, and you’ll need to keep enough food on hand to keep them from going hungry. Both your cat and dog variety of house pets should have their own separate feeding stations, as well as their own types of food. Both these type of house pets will also need to be kept entertained and fit so you will need to provide a few toys which they can play with in your absence. If you have a large garden all the more better as they can then be free to roam around as much as they please and tire themselves out. If you don’t have a large garden though and you don’t have too much time to spend on giving your house pets the right exercise then I would suggest you look into how to remedy that situation as soon as possible. All animals need exercise and if they don’t get it they will just become fat and sedentary which is really bad for them, as much as it is bad for you and I. Another thing that you’ll need to consider if you have a variety of house pets and house guests of the non-human variety is whether they’re compatible. Otherwise you might end up with a situation on your hands that resembles the popular cartoon shows, with Sylvester and Tweety. Throw the dog into the mix and what you have is a kind of cyclic chaos. Dog likes cat, cat likes bird, bird has no where to go in tiny cage. And when I say “like” I don’t necessarily mean it in a good way! So take care that your house pets are happy and healthy, and that they don’t eat each other for lack of anything else to do.

The storybooks abound with tales of heroic pets, and the amazing deeds they performed to save their masters from danger, or protect innocent children from harm. The classic TV series Lassie featured the classic "heroic" family dog, seemingly saving disaster-prone Timmy from a new and horrific fate in each episode. But few of us have personally been saved by a pet, or know a close friend who has. You almost have to wonder if such hero pets are just a topic for fiction writers, or if such animals really do save lives on a daily basis around the world. As it happens, not only do hero pets really exist, but a number of organizations even collect their stories and recognize the outstanding cases for their deeds. Readers Digest magazine has a long standing "Hero Pets" feature, including stories of dogs and cats who have roused their families in time to escape from house fires, saved children from being attacked by animals, and many other admirable feats. Purina maintains their Animal Hall of Fame for Canadian hero pets, cataloging the most admirable stories submitted each year. Their immortalized heros include a dog who alerted his owner to her undiagnosed cancer in time to successfully treat it. Hero pets also exist in far more day-to-day circumstances, especially in the ranks of trained aid and guide animals. A trained assistance dog can alert an epileptic owner of an impending seizure in time for the human to safely deal with the situation, or alert a diabetic or hypoglycemic person of a dangerous fluctuation in their blood sugar before serious damage occurs. Family dogs are renowned for not allowing harm to come to the family children, although unlike Lassie they're more likely to protect their charges by staying with them in dangerous situations than running home to fetch their parents. Does every beloved pet have the capacity to become a hero? A lucky owner will never be in a situation to find out, and it's quite possible that not all animals possess the honed instincts or extreme loyalty to perform the greatest heroic feats. However, even the most pedestrian of pets still have the capacity to perform "everyday heroics," like keeping their people company during times of stress and sadness, actually helping to lower their humans' blood pressure and even prolong their lives, and helping to teach children loyalty and responsibility in ways their parents can't. Perhaps every pet is a hero, whether we recognize it or not!

I can tell a few things about you already, "you love your pets". Your dogs, your cats, your gerbils, your pythons, and your birds. I'm not here to judge you on your choice but your a loving person with lot of compassion. I've put together a few tips in making sure you and your pet have a long life together. Simple Steps Ensure a Long Life for Your Pet As a responsible pet owner, you can take a few simple steps that will go a long way toward keeping your pet healthy and happy. Make your home a safe environment Unfortunately, making your home pet, as opposed to the outside pet, safe often is a job that is overlooked. We mostly think they will take care of themselves. We made an environment of us but they must be thought of. Pet proofing your home can lower the risk of a serious pet accident occurring. A pet owner needs to be aware of several potential dangers. Poisons in the home that can kill or seriously injure your pet include some kinds of house plants (dieffenbachia, philodendron, hyacinth, and mistletoe), pesticides, and medications. Low electrical cords are extremely hazardous when chewed. Keep harmful objects out of your pet's reach. A little prevention may be just enough to avoid a pet tragedy from happening in your home. Make sure your pet receives a complete check-up Just like us "A regular physical is the most overlooked pet health need today," says Dr. Bill Swartz with the American Animal Hospital Association. "Most people only take their pet to a veterinarian when a health problem already exists or for routine vaccinations. Preventive vaccinations and early detection of diseases are the keys to successfully treating your pet," he added. Your veterinarian can conduct a comprehensive exam that includes a lab analysis, heart check, and dental exam. Perhaps most importantly, design a diet and exercise plan to meet your pet's specific needs Obesity leads to serious dog and cat health problems such as heart disease. Exercise is important, but a pet will only exercise if there is an incentive to do so. Your veterinarian and you should consider what stage of life your pet is in, the amount of activity your pet enjoys, and the time of year before outlining a specific plan. The right kind of food and physical activity can add to the quality of your pet's life. Following are ten general pet care tips: 1. Mmm... all that chocolate! None for your pets, please! Chocolate contains a toxic substance, theobromine, which is harmful to pets. So, just say NO! 2. Is it an emergency? A pet exposed to bitter cold that becomes lethargic, depressed, and weak, could be hypothermic. Call your veterinarian immediately. 3. Did you know that by shivering, a pet that is cold or recovering from anesthesia is trying to warm its body back to normal temperature? 4. The sweet, lovely green pool of antifreeze on the driveway is an often deadly drink for dogs and cats. Even a small lick by a small pet is enough to poison it. Clean up those spills fast! 5. Did you know that some caged birds are afraid of the dark? Try a night light or leaving the front of the cage uncovered. 6. Before traveling with your pets, make sure they have all required vaccinations and health papers. If they are on medications, have enough to last through the trip. 7. When traveling by air, be aware of airline restrictions regarding outside temperature and number of animals allowed per flight. Someone may have already booked a pet and there are no more allowed. Check with the airline reservationist or travel agent. 8. Remember that even the most gentle and trusting pet may bite when in pain. If you must muzzle, use a soft towel or cloth strips and remove it as soon as possible so the pet can breathe more easily. 9. If you must transport an injured or ill animal, a blanket, vinyl mat, and even a door make excellent stretchers. The trick is to immobilize the animal to avoid further stress. 10. Moving from a cold climate to a warmer one? Don't forget to have your dog tested for heartworm disease BEFORE beginning preventive medicine. Ask your veterinarian for more information about heartworm disease. The American Animal Hospital Association asks you to provide a safe environment, quality diet, exercise, and adequate veterinary care for your pet. Consult your veterinarian if you have any questions regarding your pet's health care.

It is uncertain exactly when miniature breed animals first came about. Historical and archaeological evidence point to gargantuan rats and dinosaurs smaller than many chickens. What is certain is that miniature pets are a big business and offer big rewards, both financially and personally. There may be many jokes among some men about miniature poodles or chihuahuas but the fact of the matter remains that miniature dogs are increasingly popular among people. Many people simply do not have the room to own a large dog. A small dog can be just as happy in a small house as it can be in a large home. These days, you can find miniature horses, miniature pigs, and many other breeds that were very uncommon just a few short years ago. For some people it is simply a matter of the cute factor. Smaller animals somehow become "cute" even when their larger relatives are anything but good looking or popular among most people. Unless you live in the country, you probably never heard anyone bragging about their 1200 pound pig. For some other people, the joys of owning a miniature pet is in no small part, due to the fact that they make much smaller messes. Anyone who has ever had to carry a plastic bag for waste removal every time that they took their dog for a walk will probably agree to this. Anybody who has ever had to housebreak a pet would also be hard-pressed to find the fault in this logic. For some people, cost is a major factor. A large dog would eat large amounts of food every day. Over the course of time, those costs will add up to a large amount of money which to some people at least, shows no positive return for their investment. Other people may see the true value of their pets but just cannot afford to feed a large dog or other animal that will quite literally, eat them out of house and home. Whatever reason people have for wanting a miniature pet, they have become big business as well. Contests, shows and major events regularly occur all over the world for miniature pet lovers. Some of these shows stress the importance of a lack of size but they are increasingly looking at other criteria for deciding winners as well. Miniature horse shows have spawned entire new industries to keep up with the demands of that lifestyle. Miniature surreys are available as are carts, miniature saddles and other features that have no market outside that of the miniature horse. Similarly, shows for the miniature pot-bellied pigs and other miniature breeds are becoming increasingly popular as well. Whatever your reasons are for wanting to own a miniature pet, remember that not only can you reap big rewards, you will also open brand new opportunities in ways you may never have imagined possible. There are many different reasons for owning a pet. Pet owners can enjoy a host of benefits that people without pets will never truly know or understand. Just remember that when you are looking for a pet, size really does not matter. Miniature pets really are big business that consistently reap big rewards.

Dogs mostly are more intelligent than most people realise. They understand far more than we give them credit for. And, by using this canine inherent ability we can soon have pets doing anything we ask of them. A big secret in training animals is using their inherent abilities to our advantage. With dogs, this inherent ability could relate to their ancestral purpose, such as hunting, so ingrained in terriers or with kelpies or border collies that love to muster almost anything that moves! Those dog breeds that love to hunt are dogs that also love to seek things out, while other dogs love to muster. These traits are things that dogs just love doing naturally, and we can use these traits to make it fun for pets to learn new things. I once had a Jack Russell terrier called Pippy and she loved to muster cattle and sheep. She became one of my best cattle dogs! working with a kelpie and collie. This goes to prove you need to watch what your dog loves doing and use this trait to advantage when teaching. This also applies to goats. My wife raised two orphan Angora Kids goats. They were snow white and were smaller than a toy poodle. They loved to sit on my wife s lap in the lounge room and watch T.V. with her. Their names were Charlie and Jeanie. My 14 year old son took a liking to Jeanie and soon had her doing all sorts of tricks. He simply used the goat s natural ability and love of jumping up onto chairs, rocks or any high object, a sort of King of the Castle game that goats seem to like doing. Anyway, in a short time he had Jeanie learning to jump from one 12 litre oil drum top to another, several lined up in a row. It was a simple task to teach Jeanie to jump onto the first barrel, then jump to the next, and jump four more in a row. At the last barrel my son would extend his arms out to Jeanie and call her and she would launch herself into his arms. She did this simply because she loved jumping on things, which my son simply exploited. Then one day when Jeanie was almost fully grown, the vet came to check the goat herd and Jeanie was amongst the flock. But as the vet moved amongst the flock checking their general health Jeanie just followed him about like a shadow . Eventually the vet straightened up and asked me what was up with the young goat that kept following him? He then made the fatal mistake of holding his arm out to point at Jeanie. Instantly she noted the signal and launched herself into the vet s arms nearly bowling him over amongst the other goats. It frightened the life out of him!!! This sort of training is easily achieved with dogs. Many dogs love to jump onto things and so do cats. But this is where bribery and corruption comes into play. This bribery is achieved with some small tasty tit-bits. You use small pieces of meaty bits like cabanossi or chopped off pieces of sausage or chicken. Anything tasty will do that your pet loves. You use these small food bites to teach them to obey a whole range of commands such as: To sit To come To walk easily on the lead without tugging and pulling. And to teach your pet to do tricks. It s of real value to use a shoulder harness when walking your dog or any other pet such as your cat, goat or even a pig. If your pet is in the habit of trying to pull too hard on the lead or rush at other pets being taken for a walk, you simply quickly turn the pet around in the opposite direction and walk away. The pet usually looks astonished at this sudden change in your behavior. But your pet is more intelligent than most people it credit for. You only have to do this a few times and the pet gets the message and behaves perfectly. You can also use your bribery and corruption food bites to take your pets attention off anything that you want it to, by giving it a quick sniff of the food and it will switch its attention to you immediately. There are many training systems that you can use. I have reviewed quite a number. Some are a waste of time and money. But I have found a few that are really good. To check out the best go to my review site below. If you have a pet that is misbehaving you will find among these training systems one that will suit you and your pet, which will make both your lives really enjoyable. Copy Rights © John Duffey 2007. Peter Rabbit was a figment of the imagination of the very creative Beatrix Potter. The author was born in 1866 in Victorian Kensington London. Her home was large and sumptuous, her family rich. She was raised with several servants, a shy girl who wiled away many hours of every day by herself. Beatrix Potter learned many artistic things from her governess. She taught the writer about music, art, reading and writing. Her only other regular company was her full time nurse. Beatrix Potter had one brother. Bernard, six years her junior was away at boarding school most of the time and Beatrix s companion only during the summer months. June, July and August Beatrix Potter and Bernard Potter together relished the outdoors of Scotland s Lake District, where the family spent its holidays. Bernard and Beatrix ran through woods and fields, chasing wild animals and sometimes catching a few. They drew sketches of their favorite wild creatures living in their natural habitats. From these ideal summer days grew Beatrix Potter s adoration of wildlife and the natural outdoors. One local influence and adult friend, Canon Rawnsley, vicar of the Scots Lake District, captured her attention with his stories about how tourism and manufacturing can destroy the environment. The Potter parents were overprotective of both Beatrix and Bernard. They discouraged their son and daughter from making any friends of the other local children their age. Beatrix and Bernard became closer to each other because of this. Together they created a vast pet collection from the wild creatures of nearby fields and woods. They kept these creatures in their own school room. There were times when Beatrix Potter and brother Bernard were caregivers from a lizard, several water newts, a snake, a rabbit, a turtle and a frog all at the same time. As the two siblings cared for the habitat, they sketched them as well. From these creature friends and their sketches grew the animal characters of the Beatrix Potter books. Benjamin Bouncer was Beatrix Potter s favorite animal pal. Benjamin was Peter Rabbit s predecessor. Beatrix found him in a London bird shop. She kept the purchase from her mother and father, sneaking him into her nursery in a paper bag without telling anyone except Bernard. She devised a story around Benjamin of a bunny that loved hot buttered toast and used to run quickly into the living room every time the tea bell rang. He knew tea time meant toast time too. Peter Piper, another Beatrix Potter creation, came from the antics of Beatrix and Bernard s favorite buck rabbit. They bought the bunny in Belgium, and noted that this particular rabbit loved to lie on the rug in front of the fireplace hearth. The Potter tales told of a Peter Piper that learned tricks quickly, jumped through hoops, rang bells and played the tambourine.

If you are searching for a dog whom will be a true companion by your side at all times, look no further than the Weimaraner. This breed of dog thrives on being a member in a family, and is extremely loyal and loving. The exact origin of the Weimaraner is not known, but dogs very similar have roots as far back as the 1200s. It is believed to have been a cross between Continental pointing breeds and a Mastiff. The breed as it is known today was developed in the 1800s by Grand Duke Karl August of Weimar. The breed named after the hometown of the Duke, is an all around pointing and hunting dog. Germany was very possessive of their prized hunting dog, and it was not until the middle of the 20th century before any were brought into the United States. The Weimaraner was originally bred for hunting and tracking big game, though in time they were also used for small game or upland birds. The pointing of the Weimaraner has been described as slow, but what they lack in speed they make up for in thoroughness. The breed also has been used as guard dogs, rescue dogs, and service animals for the disabled. You would be hard pressed to find a finer athletic looking dog breed as the Weimaraner. They are moderately large with males being 24 - 27 inches tall and 55 - 70 pounds. While females area 22 - 25 inches tall and 50 - 65 pounds. The head is long with amber or gray eyes and moderately long ears. Some feel the Weimaraner has a very regal appearance! The coat of this breed is very short and smooth, though there is also a less common long haired breed. The coat coloring is gray to silver gray which has gotten the dog the nickname "silver ghost" or "gray ghost". This coat is very low maintenance on this breed so this goes over well with owners who are not into constantly combing their dogs. The Weimaraner is extremely loving and loyal to a fault! The breed is highly prone to separation anxiety and must be handled carefully to avoid the destructive behavior that results from this. The breed is also very intelligent and easily trainable which is good since if left untrained they tend to have several negative characteristics. The Weimaraner does well in a family as long as the children are not too small. Since they are so full of energy they could easily hurt a small child without meaning to. It is essential a Weimaraner is exercised daily for a fairly long duration of time. As this breed has tons of energy and amazing stamina very long walks or jogs are the best way to ensure they get enough exercise. It is very important to ensure your Weimaraner is well trained or on a leash at all times as the breed has a very high instinctive prey drive. The dog will not hesitate to charge large of small animals if not kept under control. The Weimaraner is very prone to several health issues such as gastric torsion, hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and more. Ensure you buy your dog from a breeder who refuses to breed with animals who display signs of carrying any of these disorders. This will help breed out these detrimental health problems. If you are considering a Weimaraner as your next pet, you can search for href="http://www.findapetonline.com/index/listings/category1894.htm">Weimaraners for sale online from the top breeders at Find A Pet Online. If you breed Weimaraners and would like to advertise your pets for sale on the best pet classified ads site online please check out our affordable ads and consider listing your kennel today.

By describing the physical, personality, and temperamental territorial characteristics of Purrfect and Sophie, I can explain the bizarre relationship, or lack thereof, between two exceptionally spoiled pets. Logically, a huge cat can easily subdue a teensy weensy dog. Stereotypically, dogs torment cats. However, Purrfect and Sophie are anything but typical. Uncommonly tall, Purrfect is also exceptionally lean. His agility is amazing. He leaps approximately five feet to reach his favorite snoozing place atop the entertainment armoire. We tell unbelieving friends he is a flying cat. Witnesses agree. In addition, he stands on his hind legs in the attempt to open the front door with his paws. Being raised alongside a toddler, Perfect also learns to quickly vacate when the children become too amorous. Growing up with energetic children, Purrfect learns self-preservation tactics. Sometimes, hugs and cuddles resemble restrictive imprisonment. Usually he escapes via an upward flight to the highest perch. As an animal lover, I insist the children respect his safe zone. Nonetheless, he loves the children. I suspect he feels my children belong to him instead of him belonging to my children. When the children play outside, he cries at the door until they return. After our outings, Purrfect races to the door in greeting. In addition to thinking we belong to him, we suspect Purrfect feels human. He eats a strange assortment of people food. As special treats, he prefers broccoli cheese soup and Arby's roast beef instead of his boring and ordinary cat food. Also, like many humans, he loves to snuggle beneath the covers in slumber on a chilly night. Similar to a person, Purrfect feels obligated to protect his domain. Despite being a sissy and hiding under the bed during a thunderstorm, he hisses at the mail lady. Currently undefeated, he successfully confronts any cat with the gall to invade his territory. Once, I mistakenly let my mom's wayward cat in the house. Before she fetches him, fur literally begins to fly. A much sturdier cat, I expect to find Purrfect sore and bleeding. However, the tufts of hair I find later belong to our unwelcome guest. Frequently, the children invade his personal space. On rare occasions, Purrfect bravely tackles my obstinately aggressive preschooler who forceful tries to engage a living playmate. Although Sophie also enjoys a playmate, her stature limits activities. Sophie is a three-pound miniature Pomeranian puppy. Thus, steps are mountainous. Without assistance, comfy couch cushions are unattainable. When romping around the room, human feet represent a potential safety hazard. So, we view Sophie as a defenseless and delicate little pup. We are wrong! In contrast to our preconceived views, Sophie is not defenseless. Under duress, she becomes a vicious bundle of fur. For example, when Sophie is hungry, she loses all sensibility. Knowing a found French fry will cause her a tummy ache; I endeavor to pull it from her clinched jaws. Unexpectedly, I find the baby sharp teeth embedded in my finger. She snarls. She bites. She wins. With the same force she uses to protect her food, Sophie asserts her opinion. An ear piercing bark follows any decision unsanctioned by Sophie. . My five-year-old son says: "she can do anything she wants, as long as she doesn't bite. Consequently, Sophie ultimately rules the roost. While ruling her roost, Sophie fiercely guards her chew toys. Despite her miniature size, she loves to play tug-of-war. She usually wins by default. She is tenacious. She is equally serious during mealtimes. Her food dish is sacred territory. However, she prefers not to eat alone. Better yet, she loves to be hand fed. In addition to guarding her toys and her food, Sophie envisions herself the official greeter. She loves company. Like a child, she thinks anyone passing over her threshold comes specifically to entertain her. If she is awake, she gives and demands constant attention. She incessantly follows my Mother. She is an unfailing bathroom companion. Left outside the door, she cries. As always, she gets her way. By comparing and contrasting the traits of two extremely spoiled pets, I paint a literary portrait of two extraordinarily different and yet strangely similar family companions, and establish a background for the following tale. Unable to physically help my Mother move, the children and I opt to baby-sit Sophie. Upon entering our house, Sophie immediately goes berserk. Like the metal ball in a pinball machine, Sophie runs back and forth exploring. She steals my son's toys and my daughter's socks. Attacked by curiosity and hunger pangs, Sophie tries Purrfect's cat food. Amid the obvious mayhem, Purrfect and Sophie meet. Expecting Purrfect to protect his domain, he is banished to the bedroom. While he is in the bedroom, Sophie taunts him. She scampers down the hall and barks at the door, then she races back to the safety of the living room. Getting no response, she repeatedly flits between the hallway and the living room. Feeling sorry for Purrfect, I decide to let him release him from captivity if the children promise to guard Sophie against harm. Sophie excitedly anticipates a new playmate. Purrfect disagrees. Flustered by this unknown mobile ball of fluff, Purrfect heads for cover. He escapes to a remote corner under my bed. Now, Purrfect is becoming braver. He watches her from his sanctuary atop the entertainment center, and comes down only after she leaves. A large cat intimidated by a small puppy seems perfectly preposterous. Approximately six times the size of Sophie, I expect Purrfect to uphold his reputation and establish his authority and proprietorship. Instead of Sophie cowering under the reproachful gaze of our beloved cat, he slinks away in distrust and fear. Despite my daughter's attempts to reassure him, he maintains his distance. Unaware of his potential abilities to harm her, Sophie continually assumes her royal behavior. Sophie Wins.

With nearly 1 billion internet users in the world, the internet is by far the largest community of people in the world. In fact, almost every imaginable product/service can be marketed online and the same holds good for selling pets online. Contrary to popular belief, selling pets online is not a complicated task and pet owners and pet breeders the world over are buying and selling pets online. If you are planning on selling pets online, here are a few venues that you should consider using: Advertising with pet directories/ pet websites The most cost effective method of selling pets online is advertising with niche websites that cater exclusively to buying and selling pets online. Niche websites are the most cost effective method for advertising pets and putting up a pet profile usually requires a small membership fees. Pet directories and pet websites are designed to help users find what they are looking for without much trouble and pet breeders can also choose to pay a little extra to have their advertisements featured on the home page. Compared to Google Adwords and banner ads, advertising with pet websites is cost effective and also the quickest method for selling pets online. Since visitors to pet directories and pet websites are actually looking to buy pets, a pet breeder can make sure his hard earned money is not wasted in pointless advertisements and ill directed traffic. In addition, pet directories also allow users to search for pets based on various criteria like the breed and distance of the pet breeder from their ZIP code. Creating a website A pet breeder can also choose to create a website for selling pets online. Creating a website is an ideal option for professional pet breeders that are interested in selling pets online the year round. The cost of optimizing a website for competitive keywords can be quite high and only a successful pet breeder with an established business should consider spending a couple of thousand dollars on an online pet store. Advertising with Classifieds Most internet users prefer looking through classifieds when they are looking for pets online. In fact, many pet breeders prefer advertising with online classifieds as most online classifieds are free to use and only banner/featured ads are paid. The disadvantage of online classifieds is that users have to go through a lot of web pages before they can find what they are looking for. Since online classifieds are not specifically designed for people selling pets online, the return on investment for pet breeders is considerably low. For example, a pet breeder can purchase a banner ad to advertise his pets but not all users visiting the classifieds website will be looking to buy pets. In essence, a classifieds website will not bring the same target traffic as a pet directory or a pet website. Finally, pet breeders can also choose to run a Google Adwords campaign and target specific keywords for selling pets online, but the ROI (return on investment) for such a campaign is variable. The internet is the biggest repository for finding everything from pins to aeroplanes. Improvements in directories and internet awareness have made it possible for internet users to search for previously unheard of ‘commodities’ like pets. Pet owners the world over are now using the internet to advertise and find prospective buyers for their pets. If you have pets for sale here are a few tips to help you advertise your pets online. Before you start any advertising campaign the first task is creating a mini-bio for your pet. An ideal bio should have the pet’s photo, age, breed and complete vaccination details. Irrespective of the mode of advertising being used, the pet’s bio will allow you to setup profiles and a webpage quickly and efficiently. Once you have the pet’s bio ready, the most logical step is setting up a website to advertise your pets online. The downside of running a website is that you will end up spending a considerable amount in search engine optimization, advertising your site and development costs. Also, a website is a viable option only if you want to advertise a large number of pets online on a continuous basis. If you do not want to run your own website, the next option is to advertise and register your pets with various pet directories. Pet directories have a dedicated page for each pet, and allow users to search for pets based on various criteria like the breed, species and age of the pet. Chances are, you have already made a mini-bio for your pets and making directory entries for your pets will be a breeze. Pet directories are usually free to use, but if you would like to advertise your pets more effectively, you can pay for banner advertisements on various pet directories. You can also use more expensive methods like Google Adwords to advertise your pets online. Instead of creating a website, you can create a free blog entry and then advertise the blog entry using Google Adwords and other PPC (Pay per click) campaigns. The advantage of using PPC ads is that you can target specific traffic and choose which keywords you want your ads to appear for. PPC allows users to divert meaningful traffic to a website/webpage but it is costlier than using pet directories. A competitive keyword can cost upwards of $5 per click. PPC is ideal for pet owners that want to advertise a large number of pets. Apart from the advertising avenues mentioned above, you can also use traditional advertising sources like the yellow pages and advertising sites. There are also social networking sites that are designed solely for pets and pet owners, apart from niche sites you can also use popular social networking sites like Myspace and advertise your pets in various communities that are dedicated to pet lovers and animal lovers. In essence, advertising your pets online is not rocket science all it takes is common sense and an eye for advertising spaces. To learn more about advertising pets online and for pet directories visit www.findapetonline.com.

Pets are loved by all the family members, but mere loving is not enough as pets also require many essential things to live healthily and clean. Jeopardizing the life of pets by providing them inadequate and low quality accessories is hazardous to health. Pets need certain accessories to maintain good health and behavior. It is the responsibility of the pet owners to provide their pets with enough accessories. Maintaining the pets neatly and in a hygienic manner as well as grooming them time and on ensures long and healthy life of the pets. Pets that are well behaved bring happiness to their owners by behaving well in a crowd or alone. Pet stores contain numerous pet accessories to fulfill the demands of pet owners. Pet accessories like bowls for food and water are necessary. Cats also should be provided with a separate bowl for food. An arch is considered to be one of the best accessories for cats to brush their coat giving the hair a shining look. Soft brushes are available to groom their coat and this also helps in reducing the shredding of hair. Another prominent pet accessory is the collar. Light weight E-collars are best as they fit perfectly and are comfortable for the pets. Pet accessory like muzzle reduces constant chewing and unwanted barking. Pooper scoopers are bags that help in disposing pet mess. Other accessories like clipping the nails, blankets, mats, car seat, etc serve desired purposes whenever essential. Pet accessories keep your pets clean. An identifying tag is essential as it helps in locating your pet if it is stolen or lost. The database in the tag provides enough information regarding the dog and its owners. Today most of the houses own pets and this has become a fantasy to own pets. Owning pets at others risk is not advisable. To take utmost care of a pet one has to equip him with sufficient information regarding pet and its necessities. Pet supply stores provide adequate information and accessories essential for a pet. They also give tips on food habits and medical grounds. Adding to this, lot of information is available through online. Online sites also indicate the discount pet supply stores, its availability, price and other features to be taken care of. Pet accessories play a vital role in maintaining a healthy way of living. As pets are unable to convey their feelings, understanding the need of a pet is essential for a pet owner. Pet owners should also spend some time and notice their changes time and on so that if they contract any problem, they can be given medical assistance instantly.

Every family would like to have an animal or pet in their house at some point of time. Generally people feel that cats and dogs only make great pets. However, there are other people who think that unusual pets are great. Although dogs, cats, gerbils, fish, rabbits etc. are the most common pets that you would find, some families would prefer to bring home exotic pets. If you know well about such unusual or exotic pets, they can be different and exciting and can be a good addition to your house. Else sometimes it could end in disaster. You will perhaps require more expensive food and housing if you have a more exotic pet and also you should get educated more about such exotic pets as to whether they would be suitable to your family environment. Therefore, it is important to do a lot of research on such exotic pets well in advance before choosing an exotic pet. You can also find a lot of information available on the Internet to know whether a particular exotic animal or pet can be suitable. Also you can visit a few pet shops and get advice about the type of exotic pets and the needed arrangements for them. Though exotic pets are great, they can create problems to eco-systems when unchecked. As food would be abundant, it could eat everything available and can also start reproducing heavily as there would be no predators and no enemies. There are many examples from lizards and snakes to ferrets and other such large animals of prey. It is even said that the sewerage system in New York was found to have alligators and animal control people and city workers captured many such creatures in the past. Therefore it is important that people who wish to get such exotic pets are responsible for the actions and consequences. It can be a fun to have a tiger cub in the early stages and there is a real problem afterwards with such animals. Therefore people should consider all the facts and know well before getting some types of exotic pets. The new addition of exotic pet may upset your existing pets sometimes and you may not know how they will get along with each other. For keeping them well away, you may need certain alternative measures. Most exotic pets have unusual feeding habits and hence you need to ensure that you know the type of food they eat and also how to get that food. Also you have to know the appropriate type of housing required for the animal and the things needed to add to their aquarium or cage to make it comfortable for the new exotic pet. Also check whether a veterinarian is available in your locality to give health care for your pet. Some exotic pets can also carry potential illnesses or diseases that could bring harm to the children or elderly people in your home. Also know that there are certain species that are illegal to keep as pets in homes. Therefore before you take such exotic pet home, know about the local laws. Nevertheless these are certain things that are to be considered and it does not mean that you not go for an exotic pet. They can be an excellent choice sometimes when you get exotic pets that are easy to handle and care for.

When you hear about somebody who wants to find a pet online, what is the first thing that you think about? For some people, the idea of pets and the virtual world online may never cross paths in the same thought. For others, they may have grown up in this new technological era and regularly search the Internet for almost anything that they have ever wanted to purchase. Whether you know it or not, finding pets online and pet classified ads online are not only very common, but actually a beneficial and much improved method when searching for the perfect pet. When you are searching for pets online, you can discover a lot of information that may otherwise be unavailable to you just by going to your local pet shop or library. Information about pets that would take you days or even weeks to track down in the "real world" can be found in mere moments online. The huge volume of pet information that is available online can be used to help you discover the perfect pet for you or for someone you love. Many types of pets have special needs and it is important to get as much information as you can before you invest a significant amount of money in a pet that you may have to find another owner because you were not prepared to meet it's needs once you found your ideal pet. For example, somebody who lived in the tropics would probably not have an ideal environment for many pets like Alaskan Malamutes or other animals that live in colder environments. Many animals, especially among the more exotic pets, may be very fascinating and even very beautiful in their own way but you must be certain that you have the necessary environment to raise your pets properly. All of your efforts will be in vain unless you can take care of your pets once you bring them home. In the case of many exotic pets and global or national championship stock animals, this could be a very expensive loss that is unnecessary with preparation, research and planning for your pets. Additionally, searching for pets online will allow you to get to know the people who actually sell the pets and in many instances, the animal breeders themselves. Finding a reputable pet shop, dealer or a breeder can be difficult if you do not know where to look. Often times, breeders do not go out of their way to advertise their services. If you are not currently involved in the showcasing of certain breeds or you are not actively involved in the social communities that come with some pets, it may be nearly impossible to find a pet without the Internet. Whether you are searching for dogs and cats online or looking for a pet that is more exotic in nature, you can find a pet online that will meet all of your needs and furthermore, one that can comfortably adjust to your personal environment as well. Next time you think about getting a pet, think about how to find a pet online and you will likely be very pleased with the improved results.

Diabetes is one of the most common hormonal disorders in dogs and cats. When the pet's body has too much blood glucose because is insensitive to the available insulin in his body or because doesn't produce enough insulin, diabetes occurs. There are known two types of diabetes. When there is an insufficient number of insulin-producing cells in the body, there appears a deficiency of insulin leading to type 1 diabetes. This type of diabetes is not preventable, appears usually in young pets and is the most serious form of the disease. Type 2 diabetes results from a body's resistance to the effects of insulin and usually more affected are obese and older pets. It is known that weight control through diet and exercise may help preventing the onset of type 2 diabetes. There are some signs and symptoms that can show diabetes is present. The most common are increased water consumption and frequency of urination, but also weight loss despite a large appetite may occur. It is known that diabetes can become a life-threatening condition for your pet if it is left uncontrolled. In order to see if your pet has diabetes, you should take it to the veterinarian. The veterinarian will perform a physical examination, including blood and urine tests. After that, if it is necessary, he will recommend an appropriate course of treatment for the pet. It is known that most diabetic pets require one or two daily injections of insulin to control blood glucose levels. However, the treatment may also include a combination of oral medication, a special veterinarian recommended diet and regular exercise ; it is recommended spaying in female diabetic pets. The diabetic pets should be close monitored. It was seen that low blood glucose levels, resulting in disorientation, weakness or seizures can appear because of the insulin overdoses. It is known that the daily insulin injections are the most effective way to treat diabetic pets. It is important to relax, not to be nervous when you are giving the injection to the pet, because it might feel your emotions and become nervous too. It is important to warm the insulin before you administer it, by holding between the fingers for a minute the syringe full of insulin. A good advice is to reward your pet after giving it the injection. In this way, the pet will associate the injection with a pleasant experience. The doctors say that diabetic pets have not a significantly shorter life span than healthy pets. Diabetes can not be cured, but with treatment, patience and love, the diabetic pet can have a happy and normal life.

My research on lymes disease helped me found that this illness is not just limited to humans, and can equally harm pets. Several veterinarians and pet owners report lymes disease in cats, dogs, goats, cattle, sheep, and horses. Hence, it becomes vital for pets to avoid tick bites and receive punctual treatment for their lymes disease condition. Lymes disease is capable to affect individual pets differently. Certain pets flaunt no symptoms, while several others produce fever, painful joints, vomiting, tiredness, and loss of appetite. The spirochete may harm nervous system, heart, eyes, and kidneys of pets, if their lymes disease is not treated. Cats: Cats are likely to show walking difficulties, loss of appetite, eye damage, unusual breathing, and fever. Several cats infected with lymes disease also flaunt visible symptoms. Dogs: Dogs diagnosed with lymes disease may be lethargic, can have fever ranging between 103°F - 105°F, along with poor appetite. They may also experience lameness while shifting from one place to another. Heart disorders, kidney failure, aggression, and confusion are other pets' lymes disease symptoms. From my personal experience, I can say that dogs are infectious to lymes bacterium, but they do not flaunt visible lymes disease symptoms. They exhibit the same expression for the disease as of humans. Preventive Measures: In consideration with my personal experience and research, below mentioned are certain preventive measures that you can rely upon to help your pets stay free from lymes disease infection: " Apply tick terminating chemicals on pet's exterior, to shield it from lymes disease spreading infectious ticks. You can use dips and sprays containing pyrethrins and permethrins to kill ticks on horses, cats, and dogs. Conduct the application quite carefully, as several pets are allergic or sensitive to these sprays and chemicals. " You can use a rubber gloves during the application process. Tick collars will also aid to deject ticks from attacking your pets. Ensure that, you never apply multiple repellents on your pet, because a blend of various chemicals could make your pet very sick. " Ensure to safeguard your pets against ticks, when admitting in a tick habitat such as beach grass, wooded, shrubby, or grassy areas. Trim grassy areas frequently to minimize tick habitation, which is the root cause of lymes disease. " Take care of the habitat with insecticides intended specifically for ticks. One crucial thing that, I would like to add is to avoid contaminating the water, as experts have suggested to spray insecticides at least 75 feet away form a well or any drinking water body. " Make regular tick checks and examine your pets closely to spot any embedded ticks, which can seriously tamper your pets with severe Lymes disease. Finally, my prime tip for you is to consult your veterinarian, to obtain an appropriate treatment for your pet's lymes disease. --------------------------------------------------- My name is Michael Green. I was in shock to read about the symptoms of this disease! I knew for many years strange phenomenon and various pains without any reasonable answer. I was desperate. Nobody had an answer for me. Read more and note the symptoms and treatment. You will be able to help yourself and others. The information at http://the-lyme-disease-symptoms.com is written in simple language, easy to read and leads you step by step to acquire knowledge of prevention, note symptoms and know which questions to ask your physician.

Taking a dog or cat or another animal with you on the road has its good points and its bad points. On the good side, pets can take the edge off an otherwise lonely trip. On the bad side, their needs require some planning. Some things you’ll want to think about before brining a pet along for the ride are food and water, exercise, exposure and truck shops. Food and Water These may seem obvious, but if you’re traveling in a tractor trailer truck, making sure you have pet food and fresh water can sometimes be challenging. Many of the larger grocery chains like Wal-Mart and Target have truck access or even truck parking and carry quality brands of pet foods as well as bottled water at lower prices. If you run out of food, you’ll find that most truck stops do carry dog and cat food, but they don’t have much in terms of choices. If you run out of bottled water, you can buy that at the truck stop as well. If you prefer to use the free water at the pumps on the fuel island, make sure the water is potable, meaning that it’s safe for drinking and washing. There should be signs if the water is non-potable but you may want to ask if you are unsure. Exercise Any trucker can tell you that being cooped up in a truck all day is no fun. Cats and other non-canine pets are tougher to exercise than dogs are, but many pet shops have small space play solutions. Truck stops and rest areas often have designated pet areas where they want you to walk your dogs in order to keep the rest of the grassy areas free of pet droppings. When you’re walking your dog, keep an eye where you’re stepping for just that reason. Exposure If you leave your pet in the truck when you go inside, keep in mind that it can get hot in the summer and cold in the winter when the truck is off. The greenhouse affect isn’t as drastic in a truck as it is in a car- meaning your sleeper doesn’t heat up as quickly as a car would- but a shut down truck isn’t the place for a pet for long. Anti-idling laws around the country don’t make exceptions for pets. Truck Shops Most truck repair shops and dealerships make allowances for pets. Either they will allow you to leave your pets in the truck while they work on your truck or they have a driver’s lounge where you can keep your pets with you. Some shops, however, won’t allow pets on the premises. You’ll want to call ahead to make sure your pet won’t get kicked out.

Many people have pets, and most of these people adore their pets. But what happens when you need to go out for a weekend, do you leave your pets at home? This can be done, there are time release food containers and the suchlike that can help you in your endeavors. Then there are also appropriate kitty litter trays that will deal with the whole mess and odor problem without a fuss. Or for a dog you could always have a dog flap installed, especially if you have a fenced in garden. Of course this approach also works for cats, although the fenced in garden might not be a deterrent as cats are notoriously independent and like to roam the streets. If you don’t want to take this chance then you could always take your cat with you, or leave it with some willing friends or even a shelter for a few days. If you’ve got birds then it’s not such a problem leaving these pets at home as they’ll be quite alright as long as you top up their feed and water. If it’s for longer than a day or two though, you might want to consider releasing them into a ventilated room from which they can’t escape. This will give them the chance to stretch their wings and will be greatly beneficial to their state of mind. Most animals are highly sensitive and will react adversely if you leave your pets at home for too long. They might even become ill through various conditions that prevail while you’re not in the house to oversee their needs. There are other ways to deal with this and if you know that you’ll only be gone for a short while, then you could always ask a friend or neighbor to come and check up on the pets at home. If you’re going away for a longer time than a week though you really shouldn’t leave your pets at home as this can only lead to disaster. Not only will your home be wrecked by the time you get back, your pets will be pining for you, yes even your cat, and they might have gotten to all the food quickly and not have had anything to eat other than your shoes for the past few days. So think twice if you’re leaving your pets at home for a long time. If it’s only daily when you’re at work it’s alright but you might still want to look into getting them something to keep their interest and take away their boredom. Otherwise you might still come back to a wrecked house! Author's Sites: Cat Food Recipes, Dog Food Recipes and Free Aromatherapy Recipes
