Meditation
An elder once told me, “it’s called meditation, not contemplation.” Meditation in its truest form is a state of restful awareness. Mind is aware of the outside world but does not comment on, respond to, contemplate, judge, care, concern about, nor grasp at it. It is alert stillness, a merging of subconscious and conscious where you find yourself peacefully between the two. Accessing this state of mind is highly beneficial to focusing thought, clearing emotions, and healing the physical body. While in meditation, the nervous system is given a much needed rest from the constant bombardment of stresses throughout the normal day. Breathing is naturally paced, and the body is in an ideal state for healing to take place. Since our thoughts, fueled by emotion, eventually become words and actions in our lives, clearing the mind and bringing it to a state of meditation each day is essential to our wellness. If you’re just beginning meditation, try fifteen to thirty minutes at a sitting. Eventually, you will be able to access this state during activity. This is called active meditation. -T.H. We are told that meditation is natural, that when someone sleeps they go into a meditative state. To fully understand the purpose and functioning of meditation one has to observe the human as both a physical and spiritual or psychological being. From the dawn of time, meditation has been a vital part of self transformation and holistic health. The journey to self-discovery, self help and spirituality begins with the sacred art of meditation. The value of Meditation is to alleviate suffering and promote healing has been known and practiced for thousands of years. Generally, Eastern religions have tended to concentrate on meditation as a means of realizing spiritual enlightenment. This is the essence of Hinduism of which all guru's promote through yoga and meditation. In fact, practically all religious groups practice meditation in one form or another. The ultimate goal of meditation is to self realize your divinity, that you are God. God dwells within you as You. It is a means of worship and seeking God which is ultimately the highest goal of meditation The word translated as "meditation" in several verses in Psalms means to meditate in the sense of reflecting upon. In practical terms meditation helps you learn forgiveness and loving-kindness for yourself and others in a common sense way. Mindfulness meditation relieves stress because it relieves preoccupation with the habitual thoughts about the past or the future that perpetuate stress. As your entire being becomes absorbed in meditation, every stress and strain of daily life will fall from your shoulders. Meditation interrupts that flood of stress chemicals, so you don't feel on guard or tense. In other experiments, meditators produced fewer spontaneous GSR than their non-meditating controls, both during and after meditation. Through meditation, one can cultivate a wonderful inner quiet that will melt away stress and nervousness By association, meditation can also help relieve stress- or anxiety-related disorders such as insomnia, headaches, depression, poor concentration and high blood pressure. Instead these conflicts could find, through meditation, an appeasement that will help their resolution by appropriate means. There is a natural alliance between psychotherapy and meditation. Meditation is now well accepted in medical circles. Remember that meditation is an escape to reality, not an escape from reality. In the West, however the first view was that meditation induced a type of dissassociative state or a type of catatonia. Various techniques of meditation are now widely taught in medical settings such as VA clinics and hospitals. Many physicians consider meditation a key element of an integrated health program. In general, meditation produces a reduction in multiple biological systems, resulting in a state of relaxation. For example, there has been incidences where through meditation individuals have voluntarily controlled their rate of breathing. Mindfulness meditation involves focusing one's attention on the moment, observing thoughts as they occur without judging or acting. Without acknowledgment of the present moment, meditation practice cannot progress because momentary concentration cannot occur. |

Meditation is a powerful tool used by millions of people worldwide as a method to reduce stress, increase spiritual growth and impact overall health and wellness. Unfortunately, there are many myths stigmatizing the art of meditation. Meditation is often thought of as a “clearing of the mind”. This could not be further from the truth. Meditation is also often associated with the chanting of religious mantras. This is only one type of meditation. There are many different types of meditation and most have no association with any form of organized religion. When performed regularly, meditation can be instrumental in centering one with their intended purpose and opening the mind to greater enlightenment.
Meditation, by definition, is continuous and profound concentration on a single subject. It is to give something your complete, undivided attention. The very meaning of the word does much to dispel the beliefs that meditation is meant to empty your head of any thought. The purpose of meditation is to center oneself or to achieve balance. It is to redefine your life’s focus. It is to become in harmony with your purpose. The act of meditation needs energy in the form of activity in order to be realized. It is a practice meaning that you have to do something. Activity is crucial to reaping the benefits of meditation. The type of activity you choose to perform is based upon what benefits you hope to achieve. What is your purpose? If the purpose of the meditation is to increase spiritual growth, then the activity you perform could be prayer. If the purpose of the meditation is to gain knowledge or enlightenment, then your activity could be reading. If your purpose is to relieve stress, then your activity could be a visualization exercise. Other activities can include: belly breathing, singing, yoga, martial arts, painting or any other action that requires your complete attention. The point is that whatever type of activity you choose to perform as your meditation, it must be able to produce your desired benefits. Your meditation should be purposeful. What are the benefits of purposeful meditation? Since it is not a “clearing of the mind”, meditation does not help you to escape your problems. Just as in detrimental coping techniques such as alcohol or other substance abuse, your problems will still be there when you are finished. What meditation can do is help you to gain clarity and focus, work out answers and solve problems with a “quieter” mind. The human brain is such an intricate network of thought and emotion that it is often difficult to truly hear oneself think. Focused, purposeful meditation allows you to dedicate your attention to concentrate on troubling issues without interruption. Furthermore, a quieter mind permits your brain to increase its function by absorbing and processing information better. Meditation also, because of any physical activity, promotes better oxygen intake, lowers the heart rate, reduces blood pressure and regulates the levels of cortisol, a hormone identified as a key culprit to inducing stress. Purposeful meditation is a way to strengthen the mind, body and spirit. It allows you to achieve balance and hear your own voice. It is a journey of self-discovery. You can not do it wrong so don’t beat yourself up when your mind wanders to other things. It is the nature of the human brain to think. Focused meditation takes practice. Choose an activity that is comfortable, meaningful and that will allow you to achieve your intended purpose. Start with short sessions of 10 or 15 minutes and work your way up to an hour. Remember, purposeful meditation is just one tool to aid you in your journey to a happy, fulfilling life. © 2007 by Niquenya D. Fulbright-All Rights Reserved. About the Author: Niquenya D. Meditation techniques are known to vary depending on the origin of the practice and the culture in that place. It also varies depending on the personality of the person and where he or she comfortable with. Meditation techniques can be classified as "concentrative" that involves the means of focusing into a specific object and the other can be termed as "expansive" that involves a person's free flowing thoughts, observation, and reflection. The following are just some of the most common meditation techniques that are used for effective meditation: 1. The Mantra Meditation. This is one those meditation techniques that involve production of sound or the combination of one or more sounds that are played in a very spontaneous manner. When the sounds are spontaneously played, it can greatly affect the metal process and psychic consciousness of the person practicing it. 2. The Trataka or Steady Gaze. When translated literally, "trataka" means to "gaze steadily" into a specific object. This is one of those meditation techniques that have been commonly practiced by majority of the religious systems in the world such as Sufism and Christianity. Here, the person meditating is asked to gaze steadily in a certain an object and focus his or her attention to it. Because of its effectivity in holding a person's concentration for a long period of time, the "trataka" is considered as one of the most effective yet simple means of meditating. The most common form for this meditation technique is through a use of a candle that is practically set up at the person's distance of the arm and leveled with the eyes. It is more effective if the candle is lit. But if you are not a veteran in this field yet, do not attempt lighting the candle because it can lead to an accident. Among the benefits of this meditation technique is that it helps in the improvement of the person's external and internal optic function, alleviates visualization disabilities as well as poor eyesight, develops deep mental concentration, enhances the person's ability in maintaining single point sight as well as developing a person's sense of intuition. 3. The Chakra Meditation. This is also one of those meditation techniques that greatly help in the manifestation of energy and mind control. It is also known to be very effective in developing a person's deeper consciousness. For beginners, there are actually seven Chakras available to be tried on but the most popular among them is the "chakra anusandhana," which can be self-tutored. This meditation technique helps awaken the chakra of a person in a very gentle and balanced way. It is also one of those meditation techniques that are easy to do. What you can do is to sit or lie and close the eyes. Once you have done this, you can now adjust body as well as your clothing for proper breathing control. Once you get hold of it, you can let the chakra flow into you slowly. Although this is very effective, don t overuse it because it can lead to various side effects including exhausted mental capability. If you decide to do this, always make sure that a professional to avoid creating imbalance that can lead to various personality disorders guides you. Other effective meditation techniques also include Vipassana Meditation, Raja Yoga Meditation, Zazen, and Nada Yoga, which have their own respective practices and postures. |

The art of meditation involves far more specific efforts than many people imagine, yet it can bring a whole host of benefits to the practitioner that ultimately make it a worthwhile thing to do. Science is very much weighing in meditation’s favour, and when it comes to anecdote and empirical evidence, it’s miles ahead of most other natural remedies as a proven, effective method of pain relief and a strong promoter of well being and healthy living. Whether or not you subscribe to the notion of inner peace or cleansing the soul, there is most certainly something intangible about the benefit of meditation that will leave you feeling and looking great – both inside and outside. |

Energy meditation is just one form of spiritual meditation that you can use. This form of meditation focuses on how everything is made up of energy. Whether you are meditating by yourself or are engaging in guided meditation lead by an instructor, this form of meditation is liberating to the mind and soul. The benefits of energy meditation go beyond what we can do for ourselves emotionally and physically in everyday life. By using this form of meditation we will develop self-awareness, a higher level of understanding about people and objects around us, and a better appreciation for life in general. Moreover, there are physical rewards that are just as beneficial. Your stress level will lower. Your blood pressure will drop. Your heart rate will decrease. You will feel liberated and free! A Quick Session Before engaging in an energy meditation, we need to allow ourselves to feel compassion for everyone and everything around us. This includes both living beings and non-living objects. Say things like “may everyone be happy” or “may all of God’s creatures find happiness on earth.” Be thankful to God for everything you have. Provoking positive thoughts will put your mind at ease and help the meditation process flow smoothly. Once you have your mind at rest, focus your attention on everything around you. Think of everything as energy. People, objects, animals, and all physical structures on earth should be thought of as forms of energy. Picture all of these things turning into energy and creating an energy field around you. Start from the outside in. Once your outer energy field has been established you can focus on your body. Picture your body as energy (your skin, your organs, everything). Once you have achieved perfect balance between self and environment, stay in your meditative state for about twenty or thirty minutes. Before stopping energy meditation, let your mind transform yourself and your environment back into physical form. |

Why Meditate? Scientists and doctors study meditation and recommend it. Meditation is now proven to be more than just a 'warm and fuzzy' feeling. It works. So there are many reasons why people begin to meditate. Some learn meditation to become more relaxed, for improvement in health, to reduce stress, for clearer thinking, to become more creative, to sleep better and to improve mental strength. There are physical, emotional and spiritual Benefits of Meditation. It's safe, it's simple and it's free. People who are not familiar with meditation may consider it to be prayer or worship, but this is far from the truth. Meditation can be described as concentrated awareness, so as you overcome distractions and focus your mind on something you are becoming aware; you are meditating when you maintain a continued state of awareness. There are a wide range of disciplines taught for bringing your attention on to some object or thought or awareness. In fact what happens in the process is that meditation moves your brainwaves into an alpha state. This is a relaxed state with a level of consciousness where you are still aware. In the alpha state learning and healing are promoted. Brainwaves Brainwaves are electrical activity emanating from the brain. There are four categories of brainwaves as shown below: Beta (alert/working): 15 to 40 hertz, Alpha (relaxed/reflecting): 9 to 14 hertz, Theta (drowsy): 5 to 8 hertz, Delta (sleep/dreaming): 3 to 4 hertz, Delta (deep dreamless sleep): 1.5 to 3 hertz *Hertz = cycles per second. In the alpha state your brainwaves run between 9 to 14 cycles per second or hertz, compared with your normal waking state beta: of 15 to 40 hertz. Deeper states of relaxation move through theta, delta to the deepest delta, which is a highly creative state of relaxation. In fact you are meditating when you focus on birds singing, to the exclusion of all other thoughts, or staring into the fire, just focusing on that, or concentrating on your breath coming in and out, thinking of nothing else. Traditionally Eastern cultures have practiced meditation for centuries as part of their spiritual teachings, and until recently, say the last 30 or 40 years, Westerners viewed meditation with a bit of suspicion. Now, the benefits are so well documented and experienced by so many that it has become common practice for many doctors and health practitioners to recommend meditation as part of their healing plan. There are two basic techniques of meditating and the different practices fall in to either of these two categories, with some variations possible. In mindfulness meditation the meditator sits in a comfortable position and focuses his attention and awareness on an object or activity; such as a candle, breathing, a visualization or a mantra, keeping an open focus and awareness of the present moment as he does so. This method allows for free flowing and observing of his thoughts while using the focus as an 'anchor' he constantly brings his mind back to the focus, when he starts to wander off in to different thoughts. With concentration meditation which is used by most spiritual and religious traditions, the meditator keeps his attention on a particular object like repetition of a prayer or a mantra to minimize distractions, and continually brings his mind back to the chosen object. Lawrence LeShan defined meditation in 'How to Meditate' as "doing one thing at a time with your whole being". In some traditions both mindful and concentration meditation are combined. It is possible to practice meditation even while walking or doing simple repetitive tasks. It is in moments when your mind is clear that you get that 'realization', 'inspiration' or 'BFO' (blinding flash of the obvious). "AHA" you say, as something miraculously pops in to your head. Learn How to Meditate You can attend sessions somewhere in your city, usually free, to learn how to meditate. There are many books and tapes to help you, most of them excellent aids. It is easy and simple to learn. There are many tools to help you move into a meditative state. The one I absolutely love is the Holosync audio tapes from Centrepointe (centerpointe.com) (I don't lightly recommend products, but this advanced Neuro technology is light years ahead of anything else I have tried and read about. I use it daily). When you practice meditation regularly you begin to liberate the energy in your mind and the quality of your consciousness will expand. You will become more relaxed and happy, experiencing a sense of control of your life. You tend to approach life in a much more peaceful manner, not stressing in ways you might have done previously. This is not just a generalized statement, but is now being proven by empirical research. I maintain wholeheartedly that meditation is truly beneficial. Do try it. |

"As regards the technique of meditation, different teachers and trainers give different forms of advice. But I shall give you now the most universal and the most effective form. This is the very first step in spiritual discipline. At first, set a few minutes every day for meditation, and extend the time as you feel the bliss that you get. TRY 14 MINUTES FREE GUIDED MEDITATION AT www.theabundancebook.com "Let it be in the hours before dawn. This is preferable because the body is refreshed after sleep, and the dealings of daytime will not yet have impinged on you. Have a lamp or a candle before you with an open, steady, and straight flame. Sit in front of the candle in the lotus posture or any other comfortable sitting position. Look on the flame steadily for some time, and closing your eyes try to feel the flame inside you between your eyebrows. Let it slide down into the lotus of your heart, illuminating the path. When it enters the heart, imagine that the petals of the lotus open out by one, bathing every thought, feeling, and emotion in the light and so removing darkness from them. There is no space for darkness to hide. The light of the flame becomes wider and brighter. Let it pervade your limbs. Now those limbs can never indulge in dark, suspicious, and wicked activities; they have become instruments of light and love. As the light reaches up to the tongue, falsehood vanishes from it. Let it rise up to the eyes and the ears and destroy all the dark desires that infest them and which lead you to perverse sights and childish conversation. Let your head be surcharged with light and all wicked thoughts will flee there from. Imagine that the light is in you more and more intensely. Let it shine all around you and let it spread from you in ever widening circles, taking in your loved ones, your kith and kin, your friends and companions, your enemies and rivals, strangers, all living beings, the entire world. "Since the light illumines all the senses every day so deeply and so systematically, a time will soon come when you can no more relish dark and evil sights, yearn for dark and sinister tales, crave for base, harmful, deadening toxic food and drink, handle dirty demeaning things, approach places of ill-fame and injury, or frame evil designs against anyone at any time. Stay on in that thrill of witnessing the light everywhere. If you are adoring God in any form now, try to visualize that form in the all-pervasive light. For Light is God; God is Light. "Practice this meditation as I have advised regularly every day. At other times repeat the name of God (any Name fragrant with any of His many Majesties), always taking care to be conscious of His might, mercy, and munificence." - Sri Sathya Sai Baba Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume X, Page 348-350, Shivarathri, 1979 TRY 14 MINUTES FREE GUIDED MEDITATION AT www.theabundancebook.com |

The world is filled with mysteries. Few, however, are as enchanting and enlightening as the mystery of Kabbalah. Kabbalah is the most ancient and most significant wisdom in the history of humans. The wisdom of Kabbalah allows us to achieve a higher level of our personal existence. When you understand your true purpose in life, you are able to achieve limitless possibilities. Only then are you able to experience deep tranquility and perfection. Those who follow Kabbalah meditation are able to find solutions to problems, and find peace in place of disorder. Kabbalah meditation is also able provide the answer to life's greatest mystery of all, as it allows us to answer the question "Who am I?" When literally translated, Kabbalah means "to receive." This reception is the eminent purpose of Kabbalah. When you practice this form of meditation, you will be instructed on how to receive. What do you wish to receive from life? Kabbalah meditation will help you to learn to wish for non-physical things from life, and will also help you to obtain them. The Zohar is an ancient text that serves as the source of Kabbalah wisdom. The Zohar is no ordinary text written with pen and paper. In fact, some historians are persuaded to believe that the Zohar is actually the Holy Grail. The Zohar, a twenty-three volume collection of wisdom, is also known and the "Tree of Life" and is recognized by all religions. This text is the one used to create miracles. It also maintains to end worldly destruction and even death. In a very basic sense, the Zohar is a sort of light bulb. Practicing Kabbalah meditation is almost like turning on a light switch in our lives. The Zohar, in Kabbalah meditation, provides light to sadness, sickness, death and other dark areas of our lives. Some people may be confused and view Kaballah as a religion. Do not ever assume this, as Kabbalah is NOT a religion. Rather, Kabbalah meditation is about a beautiful light that is not accessible only by a select few, but by every person in spite of race or religion. Kabbalists say that Kabbalah meditation answers our three most critical questions: Who we really are, where we came from, and why we are here. To put it more simply, Kabbalah meditation will merely provide you the necessary tools to achieve joy, deep sense of accomplishment, and allows you to experience life under the Higher Being's Light. Kabbalah was once considered to be mysticism in ancient times. Some people actually thought it to be too mystical. Today, Kabbalah is viewed as the science of the soul. Visiting online sites will guide you to some online courses on Kabbalah meditation. The site kabbalah.com will grant you a thorough tour on the history of Zabbalah as well as the modern Zabbalah meditation practice. It may sound more into the spiritual aspect but it fundamentally works the same manner as the other meditation techniques do. |

In the late 1950s, an Indian monk named Maharishi Majesh Yogi began teaching a new form of meditation that could be easily practiced by busy, modern people around the world. He called it transcendental meditation and it was based on the concept that a meditation using mantras of short words or phrases, repeated in the mind, could help the user subdue many thought processes and reach a deep level of consciousness. Mantras are selected on the basis of the learner's temperament and occupation. The spirit behind TM is the Vedanta system of philosophy that forms the basis for most modern schools of Hinduism.
The simple technique produces a state of "restful alertness" that, it is considered, transcends thinking to reach the source of thought - the mind's own reservoir of energy and creative intelligence. Through this, people can find great relaxation, inner peace, enhanced vitality, and creativity. TM is ordinarily applied for 15 to 20 minutes twice daily. Much of the research into the psychological and physiological effects of meditation has been carried out in relation to TM. It shows that the level of rest achieved is deeper than sleep. Another major finding is that meditation produces all the body responses opposite to the flight-or-fight response characteristic of stress. During meditation, breathing slows, the heart heat becomes shallower, the muscles relax, blood pressure normalizes, and there are compositional changes in hlood and skin that indicate a reduction in tension. Interestingly, Dr. Herbert Benson, the American pioneer of research into the relaxation response, showed in the 1960s that ritualistic techniques employed in various Christian traditions - such as the use of the rosary, prayer-beads, or simple prayers repeated many times over - can be just as effective as TM in achieving the same results. Siddha Meditation This is another practice whose origins are in India. It utilizes both mantra and breath control to still the mind, and thus to allow a spontaneous shift in consciousness. The mantra is recited aloud and serves two purposes. Regarded as pure sound, it causes the body and mind to vibrate at a particular frequency that induces the meditative state: the energy resonates in the unconscious. And its words provide a focus to hold the mind and stop it from randomizing its energy through scattered thoughts and images. What is known as "breath awareness" is also important: the mind has to become tuned to the way breath enters and leaves the body. Read out for Massage therapy. All the seeds of all the flowers of tomorrow are in the seeds of today. An Indian Buddhist saying. I love this saying. For me it carries within it the fundamental message of dependent arising. No single flower or seed is independent of itself. It carries within it the past and the future. All the flowers of yesterday and all the flowers of tomorrow. In this meditation I am coupling this with the Buddhist approach of guardians of the sense doors and for me, this is the essence of the Dharma. In Buddhism, we have the concept of the 5 usual senses, plus the 6th which is the mind itself. Through our senses we open ourselves up to the world and experience it. If we apply mindfulness to these senses we can capture the essence of anything experienced and understand it. We can then decide if it is skilful and unskilful. I like this idea of skilful and unskilful, rather than good and evil. It feels softer and more forgiving somehow, and also somehow more personal. Rather than some higher power deciding our fate based on our thoughts and actions, we decide for ourselves. We are very much in control of our own destiny. Our own Karma! I came to Buddhism because of its approach to the precepts. The precepts are :- To refrain from ..harming living beings. ...taking things not freely given. ...sexual misconduct. ...false speech. ...intoxicating drinks and drugs causing heedlessness. Although each precept describes that which is unskilful, for example "do not take what isn't freely given", unlike many other religions I love the positive view that is presented alongside - for example "Be generous" Obviously this is explored here at the very high level, but Buddhism requires us to explore these precepts inside ourselves without reference (necessarily) to others. They become our personal measure and we are our own judges here. It is here that the guardians on our sense doors become important. Particularly the guardian on our mind. Our own 'mindfulness of mind'. This is why we meditate I believe. To help us to train ourselves to be mindful and able to catch the unskilful and develop the skilful. However, coupled with this is the step in the Eightfold path of Right Effort. Although we judge ourselves, at the same time we are encouraged to be gentle on ourselves. Push ourselves, but not too hard. Guilt is a delusion in Buddhism. So we are encouraged to recognise our unskilful actions against the precepts, recognise and learn from them and then move on. I think that the guardians on our sense doors are even more important today because of the nature of our modern world. We are constantly assailed with images, sounds, smells which probably are not too skilful. (Just take a look at the majority of our advertising. Most advertising these days breaks at least one of these precepts, particularly false speech!) We post our guardians and then with mindfulness, watch the feelings and emotions that are involved. If we can practise and maintain our mindfulness during the day, away from the cushion, then we have at least some chance of not allowing these unskilful elements to take hold. We can keep watch and just allow the positive seeds to develop. Here we come back to this beautiful Indian saying. All the seeds of all the flowers of tomorrow are in the seeds of today With mindfulness we develop our positive seeds and weed out the negative. The Buddha explained to us that actually, we are only alive for 1/64th of a finger snap. Everything before is a memory, everything to come is a plan, a fantasy, a dream. We are constantly being reborn and our actions take us forward to the next 1/64th lifetime. If we are mindful to the precepts, through the guardians on our sense doors, particularly the mind, then suddenly each 1/64th lifetime is important and worthwhile. Each is positive and each takes us forward to the next. We develop positive Karma. A phrase I like to use here which sums this up is "As Buddhist, we capture and celebrate the most intimate nature of the present moment" So the more I stay mindful, the more I capture each moment with mindfulness, aware of what I am feeling, thinking, doing, the better the next 1/64th lifetime will be. This, for me at the moment is dependent arising and this is the experience of Karma. I carry forward the results of my previous lifetimes. Not lifetimes before this body was born, but lifetimes just moments ago. I love this way of thinking and I love the Dharma. And I am only just starting to experience and understand it! Interestingly, this also underlines for me why I don't feel I make progress on the cushion during formal meditation. My meditation is practise for the following day. To help me stay mindful. Cultivating mindfulness on this clear spring morning. With the sound of birdsong and the babbling brook, the guardians on my sense doors are far from busy. I feel the gardener in my mind, watching my thoughts, tip his hat in acknowledgement to Mara and her unskilful friends, but call and welcome in the skilful to his home. |
