Complementary Medicine

Complementary Medicine is comprised of natural therapies and medicines used to restore and maintain health; in addition to conventional medicine. Dating back to 420 B.C., around the time of Hippocrates, complementary medicine is also considered a practice beyond the realm of conventional modern medicine - naturopathy, chiropractic, Ayurvedic, homeopathy, acupuncture and so many other complementary medicine treatments are steadily in demand and on the rise.

Because our bodies are composed of chemical and physical reactions, holistic practitioners affirm that illness is not directly caused by pathogens such as viruses or bacterium; instead is the consequence of the body's reaction (in an effort to shield and heal itself) to a pathogen. Naturopathic and holistic doctors assist potential clients through complementary medicine by plainly alleviating symptoms of disease.

medicine.html>Complementary medicine can help treat most conditions like headaches, sore throats, flu and cold, indigestion, ear infections, dermatitis, urinary tract infections, sprains and strains. Some chronic conditions such as migraines, autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, cancer, muscle-skeletal pain, depression, stress, and even pregnancy and childbirth may be treated with complementary medicine as well.

Complementary medicine teaches proper nutrition in conjunction with vitamin and mineral supplements. Plants and herbs are commonly used in alternative medicine to treat illness, as well as remedies produced from animals and minerals. Hydrotherapy and hypnotherapy are also utilized in complementary medicine for maximum benefits.

All in all, complementary medicine improves mental, emotional, and physical health. It encourages psychic and spiritual growth, and an overall sense of wellness.

If you (or someone you know) are interested in finding life coaching schools, let professional training within fast-growing industries like massage therapy, cosmetology, acupuncture, oriental medicine, Reiki, and others get you started! Explore career school programs near you.

Naturopathic medicine

Mark Hutten Health Fitness/Health Fitness 2007-10-20
View Detail

Naturopathic medicine has been described as "any of various systems of healing or treating disease (as chiropractic, homeopathy, or faith healing) not included in the traditional medical curricula taught in the United States and Britain".

A major objection to naturopathic medicine is that it is done in place of conventional medical treatments. As long as naturopathic treatments are used alongside conventional treatments, the majority of medical doctors find most forms of complementary medicine acceptable.

Advocates of naturopathic medicine hold that naturopathic medicine may provide health benefits through patient empowerment, by offering more choices to the public, including treatments that are simply not available in conventional medicine.

Advocates of naturopathic medicine hold that the various naturopathic treatment methods are effective in treating a wide range of major and minor medical conditions, and contend that recently published research proves the effectiveness of specific naturopathic treatments.

Although advocates of naturopathic medicine acknowledge that the placebo effect may play a role in the benefits that some receive from naturopathic therapies, they point out that this does not diminish their validity. Researchers who judge treatments using the scientific method are concerned by this viewpoint, since it fails to address the possible inefficacy of naturopathic treatments.

If a naturopathic medical approach, initially regarded as untested, is subsequently shown to be safe and effective, it may then be adopted by conventional practitioners and no longer considered "naturopathic".

It is advisable for patients to inform their medical doctor when they are using naturopathic medicine, because some naturopathic treatments may interact with orthodox medical treatments, and such potential conflicts should be explored in the interest of the patient. However, many conventional practitioners are biased or uninformed about naturopathics, and patients are often reluctant to share this information with their medical doctors since they fear it will hurt their doctor-patient relationship.

Most Americans who consult naturopathic providers would probably jump at the chance to consult a physician who is well trained in scientifically based medicine and who is also open-minded and knowledgeable about the body's innate mechanisms of healing, the role of lifestyle factors in influencing health, and the appropriate uses of dietary supplements, herbs, and other forms of treatment, from osteopathic manipulation to Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.

People want competent help in navigating the confusing maze of therapeutic options that are available today, especially in those cases in which conventional approaches are relatively ineffective or harmful.

Naturopathic medicine practices are often based in belief systems not derived from modern science. Naturopathic medicines may therefore incorporate spiritual, metaphysical, or religious underpinnings, untested practices, non-Western medical traditions, or newly developed approaches to healing.

The issue of naturopathic medicine interfering with conventional medical practices is minimized when it is turned to only after conventional treatments have been exhausted. Many patients feel that naturopathic medicine may help in coping with chronic illnesses for which conventional medicine offers no cure, only management. Over time, it has become more common for a patient's own MD to suggest naturopathics when they cannot offer effective treatment.

Generic Medicine

What is Generic Medicine? Why is it called Generic? If you are looking for answers of these questions then you are at the right place. By the time you finish reading this article, your knowledge on this subject will be enhanced to a new level.

Let's first understand the need to have different names for medicines. To put this theory in simple words, orange juice is something consumed everyday, but an orange juice manufacturing company would want to give their product a unique name that is different from the common tag "orange juice" and this new name becomes its brand name. Similarly, a generic name is a chemical name given to a medicine keeping in mind the active ingredients present in it. A brand name is a name given by the manufacturing company to differentiate their product from other similar products in the market. Another important reason behind giving brand name to a medicine is that generic names are long and can be difficult to remember, while a brand name will always be short and easy to remember.

Generic medicine is defined as a substitute or a bioequivalent of a branded medicine with respect to pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. A medicine can only be termed as generic if it is made up of the same chemical composition at same strength and it has to meet the same pharmacopoeial standard of preparation. Generic medicines are consumed in similar dosage pattern, strength, safety precautions as its innovator brand.

Many large pharmaceutical companies are heading towards manufacturing their own generic medicine to preempt the expiry of their patent. Patent lifetime differs from country to country and also it differs for different medicines. Generally, there is no such process where you can renew a patent once it has expired.

In the United States the FDA carries the responsibility to make sure that generic drugs are safe and effective. This process began in 1960s where generic manufacturers had to prove their medicine is bioequivalent to the innovator brand. The parameters for approval of generic medicine are same as its innovator brand. Generic medicines are cheaper and can save patients and insurance companies thousands of dollars without compromising the quality of care.

Pet Medicine

Pet Medicine Just like when you or any family member is ill, when you find that you have a sick pet medicine is what you’ll be needing to give it as well. Your pet is just as much a family member as anyone else, especially if they have been with you through your good times and bad. Some pets might be childhood friends who are now in their old age. Pets need medicine as well, so you’ll need to see their wants when they fall sick as well.

It’s easy enough to pick up a pet at the pet store and think glibly that you will care for it, then forget all about it as time goes by, but that isn’t playing fair by your pet. It too should expect to be cared for and looked after well into its dotage just as you would an older relative. There’ll also be special pet medicine that you will need to get for your pet when it falls sick.

Animals are prone to the same whims and fancies of fate that we are, and they also get the same diseases and illness that we do. Not exactly the same but more of the pet version, which is why they need pet medicine. So don’t feed your human medicine to your pet as this could be lethal.

If you’re interested in administering to pets however, you could of course become a veterinarian. These wonderful people are the shamans of the pet world and will know exactly what pet medicine to administer to your pet when the need arises. If you feel the calling in your blood to look after animals and care for them, then this could be the route you were looking for.

This could unlock your hidden talents and set you on the path of a great career. That is of course only if you enjoy being with pets. If not then this job is definitely not for you. However, if you have a pet, you’ll still need to be able to give your own pet the prescribed pet medicine in the right dosages, at the right times.

Look after your pet with great care. You’ll never find the same lifelong love and devotion from anyone else that you would from a faithful pet. One pet is worth a thousand people who will only stand by you in the best of times. So remember that your pet needs medicine too, just as we do and give them the pet medicine they need.

Allergy medicine.

Allergy, or type I hypersensitivity, is the systemic inflammatory response of the body toward allergens or allergy causing agents. People with allergy are usually hypersensitive toward certain things which are considered normal by other people. Some of these things include dust, pollen, certain foods, and even mosquito bites. The patients may offer suffer from small problems like running nose, itchy nose, rash, and other things. However, sometimes allergy could be really dangerous and potentially life-threatening with symptoms like anaphylactic shock, which could be fatal. Generally, allergy can be found out with certain symptoms and can be treated early with allergy medicine. When found out earlier, the chances of controlling allergy with allergy medicine are more and easier. However, it is to be noted that allergy can only be controlled, and not cured. The most practical remedy for allergy is to lead a clean lifestyle, stay away from the allergens which cause you allergy, take allergy medicine, and follow the instructions of the physician.

Some of the commonest symptoms are running nose, itchy nose, wheezing, ear pain, headache, and in some cases even asthma. While most of the people ignore these problems as not-so-important ones, you have to take notice if they tend to occur again and again in a relatively short period of time. If you feel or suspect that after consuming certain food or after using something you tend to have these symptoms, you should consult your physician immediately. For treating allergy, there are both prescription and over-the-counter allergy medicine available. Usually, physicians will suggest antihistamines to control allergy, as they are considered the best in controlling the symptoms. An antihistamine is also the most versatile of the allergy medicine, as it can be taken as a pill, nasal spray, liquid, or an eye drop. Benadryl, Claritin, and Dimetane are some of the famous over-the-counter medicines while Clarinex, Allegra, and Zyrtec are the most famous prescription medicines.

When exposed to an allergy causing agent, the patient is likely to get his immune system triggered on. The immune system immediately releases histamine, which gets attached to the receptors in blood vessels and makes them larger. This causes problems and results in redness, itch, running nose, and other problems. The proper allergy medicine for this problem is an antihistamine. By giving antihistamines, the histamine receptors are blocked and the symptoms can be prevented. Antihistamines usually cause drowsiness, but non-sedating antihistamines can also be suggested by your physician.

Another important category of allergy medicine is the decongestant. Decongestants, as the name suggests, relieve congestion and usually go hand in hand with antihistamines. As congestion is one of the commonest symptoms of allergy, decongestants are widely used by allergy patients. They are available in the form of both liquid and pills, and are extensively used as nasal sprays and eye drops. Like antihistamines, decongestants are also available as prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs. Sudafed tablets, Afrin nasal sprays, and Visine eye drops are some of the over-the-counter drugs and Claritin-D, Allegra-D, and Zytec-D are some of the common prescription drugs. Corticosteroids, another commonly prescribed form of allergy medicine, are used to treat the inflammation related to allergies. They can be taken as nasal corticosteroids, inhaled corticosteroids, eye drops, and oral steroids.

Diabetics should look after their feet ( Alternative Medicine )
It is confirmed that the health of diabetic patient’s feet is very important and any injury or bruise, the size of a spot may cause problems right down to the bone and cause gangrene, so diabetics should take care of their feet from shoes to socks and nails to heels. Experts stated at a press conference that for diabetics the most vulnerable organ is their feet. The feet are the organs which are most exposed so when the flow of blood slows at the feet they start to lose sensitivity. An expert claims that even a little bruise might leave the feet more vulnerable to future injuries so diabetics should protect their feet:
”Your feet should be washed every night with warm water, be dried thoroughly and moisturised. After sports and walking, the underside of the feet should be checked with a mirror to ensure there are no bruises. Socks musn’t be too big or too small, musn’t be scrunched up or torn. Shoes should be made from soft leather, with smooth inside and not pointed or tapered at the front. Toe nails should be cut short. Nails should be cut straight across, not rounded.” ( Alternative Medicine )
Experts warn that if diabetic people don’t take these warnings seriously and don’t follow these guidelines they may lose their feet or legs, “treatment is too difficult and lengthy. If injuries don’t heal properly, even a little bruise the size of a spot can reach the bone and become gangrene and can cause loss of toes or whole feet.”

Miracle Medicine

‘Ashwagandha’ is one of the valuable medicinal plants used in Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani systems of medicine.
The botanical name of this plant is Withania somnifera (L.) belonging to the family, Solanaceae.
The root of this plant is generally utilized for the herbal formulations.
However, leaves and seeds are also used in certain cases.
The plant is very popular in India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Israel and Africa.
Some of the alkaloids like Withanine present in this plant has the property of curing a number of human diseases.
When I went through a research paper, I found almost all diseases of human beings can be cured by ‘ashwagandha.’
I asked myself, why then such a ‘sarva rogha nivarani’ is not being used to the full potential for curing human diseases?
No answer I could find.
Thousands of literature, research papers and books explain the ‘good’ of ‘ashwagandha.’
But still it has to see its light of the day as a universal potent drug for solving the problem of human diseases.
No one has studied seriously the dose of this drug for different diseases, the form to be used, specificity etc.,
Nowadays, there are evidences to show the side effects of such formulations when administered to certain individuals or animals.
Therefore all those who work in medicinal plants, more particularly ‘ashwagandha’ have to be careful and do more detailed research in administering such drugs to human beings.
Whatever we eat from plant source will be harmless is only a feeling, not reality.
‘Aswagandha’ has been used for 4000 years in traditional medicine as a rejuvenating drug.
Hence, importance has to be for improving the yield of ‘ashwagandha,’ and also the production of drug from it.
Commercialization such plant based drugs after clearing its side effects will be useful for human beings who are suffering from various deadly diseases, such as arthritis, granulation tissue formation, cancer, fever, chest pain, sores, swelling, eye sores, boils, syphilis, cold, asthma, tuberculosis, bronchitis, leuco-derma and many more.
The spectrum of diseases cured by one drug like ‘aswagandha’ is unimaginable.
Same is the case with other plant based medicines.
When I read some publication, I felt frustrated that why such a drug is not popularized so far?
Are there limitations?
If so, is it not advisable to clear the limitations by doing little more research?
Let us hope ‘ashwagandha’ is going to be a miracle medicine for all the diseases listed above.

Depression Medicine

David McEvoy Health Fitness/Health Fitness 2007-03-09
View Detail
No one knows what causes depression and there are many variations in the way a depressive disorder can manifest itself. It isn't possible to tell who is going to develop depression, and there is no way of knowing what medication might help or even exactly how each medicine works. What is known is that without assistance, it is possible for depression to continue for weeks, months or sometimes years and that medicine can help, but which one? Again, this will differ from person to person and with so many medicines available, both on prescription and over the counter, where do you start? The following represents a list of medicines commonly used to treat depression.

Prescribed Medicines

If you suffer from clinical or more severe forms of depression, then it likely that you will be prescribed medication by your Doctor. There are several different types available and these include Tricyclics (TCAs), Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), Serotonin and Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs), Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) and many others. All of them work in various ways to alter the activity of certain chemicals in the brain that have an impact on our mood and how we feel.

Just as depression affects each individual differently, so too does the effect of any medication. After an assessment of your symptoms and the possibility of undesirable side effects, your Doctor will identify the most appropriate one to begin with and will probably start you on a low dose and if there is no change after a number of weeks, a higher dose or perhaps an alternative medication will be prescribed.

Over the Counter Medicines

There are many preparations on the market that can be bought over the counter, which are probably more suited to milder forms of depression but it is always important to discuss options with your Doctor first as even seemingly safe medicines can carry risks, particularly if you have other health problems and are already taking some form of medication.

SAMe

SAMe or S-Adenosylmethionine to use its full name, is a naturally occurring substance in the body that is involved in many biochemical processes. Research has shown that some people suffering from depression have lower levels than those who are not. SAMe appears to work by increasing the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain, for example, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, all of which play an important role in determining our mood. One advantage of taking SAMe is that it can start to work quite quickly and has the added bonus of having fewer side effects than conventional medicine.

St John's Wort

St. John's Wort or Hypericum perforatum has increasingly been recognised for the beneficial effect it can have on mild to moderate depression. It appears to work, at least in part, in much the same way as Prozac by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin. One of the main concerns with St. John's Wort is that it does interact with many other drugs to produce some undesirable effects so it is particularly important to discuss the implications of taking St John's Wort with your GP first.

5-HTP

The full term for this is 5-hydroxytyptophan, which is a type of amino acid produced by the body that can be converted into serotonin. As well as lifting mood by increasing serotonin levels, it also appears to improve sleeping patterns, aids weight loss, and exerts a positive influence on many other physiological processes. It has been used to help alleviate the symptoms of migraine, insomnia and Fibromyalgia amongst others, but is most commonly used to help treat depression.

Fish Oil

People suffering from depression tend to have lower levels of Omega 3 fatty acids in their blood and supplementing with fish oil has been found to be effective in reducing the symptoms of depression and other mood related disorders including bipolar disorder and post natal depression. The most important Omega 3 fatty acids are Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), however, DHA is important for healthy structure of the brain but it is EPA that appears the most significant for healthy brain function on a day to day basis. EPA has powerful anti inflammatory properties, can increase serotonin levels and improve blood flow to the brain. Research indicates that fish oil with a high EPA content is better than standard fish oil containing lower ratios of EPA to DHA.

Homeopathic Remedies

There are a number of Doctors and other health professionals who also prescribe homeopathic remedies. Although it is possible to purchase homeopathic remedies over the counter, it is wise to seek the advice of a trained homeopath that will be able to take into account many other factors in order to give the most appropriate preparation. Homeopathy works on the philosophy that "like cures like" so that whatever causes the symptoms of a particular condition can be cured by the very same thing if given in a much diluted form. Examples of homeopathic remedies include Veratrum album, Natrium muriaticum and Ignatia, all of which can be used to treat depression. One of the main benefits of homeopathic remedies is that they are safe to use and you don't have to discontinue other medications whilst taking them. The Homeopathic Association keeps a register of qualified doctors, nurses and dentists who are also qualified homeopathic practitioners.

Anthroposophical Medicine

Josef Graf Spirituality/spirituality 2008-05-05
View Detail
Anthroposophical medicine, one of the many initiatives launched by Rudolf Steiner, is a holistic approach to healing that entails an in-depth assessment of the fourfold human constitution - wherein the inter-weave of physical, etheric, astral and egoic bodies of the individual are delved into. It’s practitioners are commonly full M.D.s, although there are also naturopaths and other holistic healers who use anthroposophical principles in their practice.

Treatment can entail attention to any or all of the four bodies, often using homeopathic and herbal remedies manufactured by quality-focused companies, such as Weleda Products.

Materialistic science tends to view disease as nothing more than an enemy to eradicate. In contrast, Steiner’s deeper perspective indicates that illnesses are often the cure for a soul condition.

Childhood illnesses can be of great value to an individual’s destiny. Young children have more mutable DNA than adults. Children often incarnate into a body in which they feel does not suit them. In effect, they feel uncomfortable, not-at-home in the body. The spirit of the child which, in its over-lighting wisdom, knows what is best for the child, can use a high fever as a catalyst to transform the DNA so that the body is made more suitable for the individual soul inhabiting it. Immunizations can interfere with this process, resulting in a child having to live with allergies and/or asthma for the rest of its life.

Also, when some illnesses are eradicated for the general population, the pool of human consciousness seeks out new illnesses to fill the gap, so that on a deeper level people can access the challenges and/or conditions needed to complete their quest. Curtailing diphtheria and tetanus, for example, necessitated humanity’s subconscious search for replacement illnesses.

This information does not mean that we stop striving to alleviate suffering. We continue with this, of course, but with greater understanding decisions pertaining to illness can lead to greater overall and long term benefits.

Steiner once relayed the tale of a man who had developed restricted breathing on one side. After an operation the man could breath normally. However, his spirit had actually created the breathing restriction because of a weakness in one of his lungs. The unrestricted breathing that resulted from the operation shortened the man’s life, due to complications in the lung. He would have lived longer had he left his condition as it was.

Extensions of anthroposophical medicine include artistic therapies such as eurhythmy (the science and art of movement to speech and music), music, and painting.

From Wikipedia: “A study of anthroposophic treatment of chronic illness found that Anthroposophic therapies were associated with long-term reduction of chronic disease symptoms, improvement of health-related quality of life, and health cost reduction."

Herbal Medicine Aromatherapy

Joe L Golson Health Fitness/Health Fitness 2008-03-24

Aromatherapy dates back to ancient cultures more than 5,000 years. In continents like Africa, certain plants were eaten by warriors before going into battle. Most of the time, the healing powers of the plants or barks were observed after animals had consumed the foliage or fruit. The animal’s behavior was observed and humans found that they, too, could get the same effect.

Horny goat weed is an example of a plant that has been used for ages to increase fertility in men. Despite the funny sounding name this natural derivative was discovered after horned goats were found getting very frisky and having high energy levels after consuming the plant. It has been used for centuries as a product to treat impotence.

While herbal remedies have been used in most countries for thousands of years as a way to stay healthy and combat illness, the concept of aromatherapy, which is using the scented oils derived from the plants to cure and heal, got its roots, so to speak, in the far East.

Lavender is a pleasant scented flowering plant that is grown all over the world although it grew naturally in warm climates. Lavender is grown widely today for the oils that are used for everything from sweetening certain dishes to being used as an antiseptic.

The essential oils derived from this plant can be used to treat headaches, as a cure for insomnia and to promote relaxation. Lavender is one of the few essential oils that is safe to use directly on the skin and can also be consumed. Essential oils are not made for oral ingestion, but lavender buds are sold as a tea in some health food stores. Lavender has been used for thousands of years to treat everything from insect bites to anxiety.

Because it has an antiseptic quality, lavender was also used to disinfect floors in hospitals. Today, most disinfectants are chemically produced and toxic to both those who use them as well as to the environment.

It was the Ancient Chinese who first discovered the many healing powers of the various essential oils and gave it a name. Herbal medicine is still practiced in the far East today and many people from the west travel to countries such as Thailand and Singapore to find relief in natural herbal remedies and treatments.

Thousands of years ago, villagers would visit someone in the village who knew all about the different herbal remedies and would treat them accordingly. Most people also had some knowledge of the different plants that grew around them and how they could be used to benefit their lives.

Today, however, most people have no idea how to even use simple herbs to add flavor to a recipe, let alone use them for healing. Most people in the west pay little attention to the plants and nature around them or any healing powers that those plants may contain. This is gradually beginning to change. Many people today, thanks to the internet, are beginning to understand a little about herbal remedies and aromatherapy.

As the ancient Chinese used scents to heal, the concept was delivered to the ancient Egyptians who created mixtures of the scents and made perfumes. The scents were not only used to heal illness, but also as an aphrodisiac. The ancient Egyptians incorporated aromatherapy into their daily rituals and were the first perfumers. In ancient Egyptian, it was once a requirement that everyone perfumed themselves at least once a week and people often took three baths a day in perfumed water.

Sandalwood is used in incense for its pleasant scent and the Ancient Egyptian women would use the oils from Sandalwood in their hair for the scent. Other scents were also discovered that were both pleasant and healing.

Throughout centuries, different cultures used the essential oils derived from nature for a variety of products and healing ointments. Herbal remedies were also very popular treatments for ailments until the discovery of penicillin. Penicillin was derived from mold, also a natural substance, and was used to treat bacterial ailments and infections. Today, penicillin remedies are known as antibiotics and are produced in laboratories with synthetic materials.

The history of Aromatherapy may date back to ancient times, but it was widely accepted in all cultures until chemicals began replacing the natural essential oils. Today, aromatherapy is considered alternative medicine that many people are finding a better choice than a dependency on synthetic chemicals.
