Language Learning

More than considering the amount of time and dedication learning a new language demands, it is also important to consider why it is worth learning. Reasons for learning a foreign language varies, it could be practical, aspirational, intellectual, or even sentimental. But whatever reason it might be, a clear idea of why you want to learn a language can help motivate you in your studies.

This list can help distinguish your reason.

Emigration. Moving to a different country or region can be difficult. Learning the local’s language will help you communicate and integrate with the local community. It will also show your interest in and commitment to the new place.

Loved Ones. If your partner, relatives or friends speak a different language, learning their native tongue will help you better communicate with them. What’s more, it will give you a better understanding of their culture.

Career. Learning to speak the language of your foreign clients will provide you with the leverage to negotiate a business deal and to secure a contract. Knowledge of foreign languages can also increase your chances of finding a job, of getting a promotion, or of being sent overseas.

Interpreters can only provide limited assistance. It is vastly advantageous if you can understand what your colleagues or clients are discussing in meetings or in social gatherings.

Study or Research. You might be surprised to find out that the subject you’re interested in is published in a foreign language. Learning that language will enable you to understand the material, so you can appreciate the subject more.

Travel. Don’t just get by when you take a holiday in other places. Having advanced knowledge of the language will give you more than just the ability to order food and buy tickets with much ease; by giving you the ability to have a real conversation with the locals, knowledge of the language will definitely give your holiday a new dimension.

Faith. If you are a missionary, learning different types of language will help you spread the message of your faith more easily. In fact, missionaries have played a major role in documenting and devising writing systems for many languages.

Taking the Challenge. Maybe learning a different language gives you a rush that’s similar to the one a thrill seeking parachutists get after jumping off a plane.

Never Enough! Maybe there is no profound or spectacular reason why you want to learn; you’re just perhaps one of the many people who are ensnared by the vernacular addiction.

Understanding Language

Celeste Y Business/Public Relations 2007-10-04

Businesses looking into branching out into other countries need to look at the language barriers. Not every country speaks English and for most, English is a second language. Business communication has changed in recent years with the world getting a little bit smaller due to the Internet. People from different nations, cultures, languages and backgrounds are meeting and communicating with one another more today then they did twenty odd years ago.

Forming business deals and partnerships overseas, and expanding into new territory will mean having to adjust and find common ground. While learning a new language is an option to communicate, outsourcing translators is probably easier then struggling with words and pronunciation while flipping through pages of your dictionary.

Unless you are completely fluent with a language, you could end up insulting your new business partner without even realising it. According to recent statistics there are a total of 1,739,899,271 people that are able to speak English out of about 6,622,407,440 people in the world. That is 73% of the world’s population is able to speak English, of which 32% are second language speakers.

With 6,912 currently known languages in 194 countries, learning each one of them will take years. The original concept is that English would be the common and standard language for the world, however with emerging countries who don’t traditionally speak English, such as China, that is changing.

It might be strange to think that there are places on this earth where English isn’t the mother tongue. American humour columnist, Dave Barry, is quoted as saying “American’s who travel abroad for the first time are often shocked to discover that despite all progress that has been made in the last 30 years, many foreign people still speak foreign languages.”

It is crucial for public relations that companies conduct business in the language of their customers or partners. If you are wishing to propose an idea or plan to another on their home ground, then having a translator is a symbol of respect as well as making everyone comfortable. Having cultural and linguistic knowledge is essential to form long-term successful relationships with foreign partners.

Mark Amidon is quoted to have said “Language is the means of getting an idea from my brain into yours without surgery.” Having meetings where people can talk freely and not have to try and find the words is ideal for everyone. The results will be better communication and a more relaxed setting as you can concentrate on the idea and not the translation.

Having a reputation of respect towards others and not having to struggle with the barriers will result in new business opportunities. Already existing relationships will improve as the company can expand into areas previously inaccessible, as said by Ludwig Wittgenstein “Limits of my language mean the limits of my world.”

But the concept of needing a translator, is best expressed by an old Indonesian saying: “Bahasa jiwa bangsa,” translated “Language is the soul of a nation.”

Aborigines Language

Aborigines are Australia’s indigenous people. There is evidence of their culture that dates back to 50, 000 years ago. The country is made up of harsh desert conditions, which forced the aborigines to have extensive knowledge of the plants, animals and water sources in the country. This is based on a skeleton found in Australia. It was found in New South Wales, near Lake Mungo. Aboriginals used to return to certain sites to bury their dead.

There are 600 tribes of Aboriginals, each with different dialects and languages. With the arrival of westerners, the traditional Aboriginal way of life has slowly changed. Most Aboriginals have forfeited their traditional nomadic ways for the comfort of cities and towns. There are 250 languages that have been recorded in Australia.

Today the majority of Aboriginals speak Australian English as their first language. Only 15% speak their mother tongue as a first language. They have also developed a language, which is known as Aboriginal English, which is a combination of their mother tongue and English. Originally there were about 350 to 750 distinct Aboriginal social groupings. Today there are less then 200, with 20 of them being in high risk of extinction.

Only 10% are being passed onto children in isolated rural areas. There are common vocabularies between the different languages, for example the display for close relatives. There are terms that have spread worldwide, such as Billabong. Billabong was used to name a popular youth surfing brand, which originated in Australia.

The original meaning of the word is “small pool of water” or “lagoon”. There are other terms, such as boomerang, which has been made popular by cartoons over the years. The boomerang is a weapon used by the Aboriginals to hunt with. It is generally made out of wood, which is curved. If thrown correctly, it will hit the object and fly back to the thrower.

Another fairly popular item of the Aboriginals is an instrument called the Didgeridoo. It is usually about 90 to 150 cm's in length and is a cylindrical wind instrument. It is made out of wood with paintings of the owner’s totem on it. It creates a beautiful low-pitched, resonant sound when blown correctly.

The National Geographic has created a programme to try and protect the remaining culture and language of the Aboriginal people. Many of the traditions are being recorded, as well as the knowledge of the land and environment that they possess. So far, the project has been hugely successful and with a bit of luck, our children and their children will be able to carry on enjoying the beautiful culture, folklore and history of the Aboriginal people to come.

Bushman Language

Celeste Yates Travel Leisure/Travel Leisure 2007-11-12

Bushmen are generally associated with a culture of nomadic hunter-gather people in the Kalahari Desert of Africa. They are known under different names in different regions, such as Basarwa in Botswana. In Namibia and South Africa, they are called San. They prefer to be called bushmen, as they are proud of their origin and their extensive knowledge of the bushveld, which is where they live.

Their language is quite unique in comparison to other languages. It is comprised of a selection of clicks. There are a variety of versions of their language. In total there are five types of click noises, which they use. Overall the click is created by a sucking action of the tongue. However, different positioning alters the click noise by changing the way air is released.

The sounds are written as “/” (dental), “?” (palatal), “!” (alveolar or retroflex), “//” (lateral) and “ ” (circle with dot) (bibabial). The sound // is similar to a noise a rider would make when urging his horse to move.

The sound / is similar to a “tsk tsk” or tutting, when you are expressing sympathy to a person. The ! is the noise that you make with your tongue to imitate a cork popping from a bottle. Lastly ? sounds like a baby sucking with a tongue just behind their teeth.

Different groups of Bushman use different clicks. The tribe of bushmen that live north of Uitspan Hunting Ranch speak two kinds, called West !Xoon and N/ohan. Overall the two are part of the Taa language group.

Taa means person or human being and is the one variation, which is still spoken by the majority of the Bushmen. Most of the Bushmen live in Botswana. Due to the numbers of speakers from the tribes, the language has fallen under the endangered language list. However, organisations are busy trying to record all the culture, traditions, history and language, as well as their large knowledge of the plants and nature.

In Namibia, the largest group of Bushmen can be found at the Uitspan Hunting Ranch. The ranch is on communal land. They call the area the “Korridor” – because it lies between the former Aminuis Native Reserve and the Botswana Border. The place was established in 1923 for Herero cattle herders to roam since the Namibian Independence.

Originally it served as a buffer zone against the cattle spreading disease from Botswana into the reserve. Today the Korridor is divided into 22 farms. Each farm has a few boreholes and one of them was given to the Bushman tribe.

It is here that the Bushman created their village, which the locals have dubbed “San Plaas”. Plaas is the Afrikaans word for Farm, Afrikaans being another local language. Since 1997 visitors have been welcome to come and visit and live in the culture and experience it for themselves.

Animal Language

Gabriel Rise Home Family/Pets 2007-03-21

Should humans learn animal language? Can we learn something from animals’ world? It is without a doubt that the answer must be affirmative. Language is the primary means by which humans communicate with each other. Humans do this through verbalization – the vocal expression of words and sounds, to express thoughts and feelings to other human beings. However, there is reason to believe that language does not only exist among human beings; animals, too, have a means of communication with each other and with us human beings. A good example of animal language would be pack animals such as dogs. Dogs are animals that require a high level of socialization and interaction, and thus, would necessitate a high level of communication within themselves and with human beings. Dogs instinctively, instantaneously and directly express what they feel and what they want, as opposed to the indirect manner by which humans do it. Aside from this, dogs express their messages through a combination of vocalization, body signals and touch signals. Wolves, and even dogs, in cases of aggression, use growling sounds to either warn a potential rival. A rival would be a dog, another animal or a human being who would appear to threaten the dog’s pack dominance or his food source. The vocalization sound was already accompanied with body signals, to further signify that the dog is an aggressive or protective state. In other cases, it would be evident through the dog’s body signals that it is in a submissive state. These signs can also be seen in a friendly dog, who appreciates the touching and caressing that another dog or a human being offers. Since dogs are highly sociable animals, it is normal for their expression to involve touch. A dog massages her newborn puppies’ bellies with her tongue, to stimulate the gastroinstestinal system of her puppies. Further, the mother uses her tongue to lick her puppies and to keep them clean. The high level of touch that was established by the dogs’ mothers during their infancy maybe the reason why adult dogs very much appreciate petting and touching gestures that humans offer. Humans usually show appreciation to their dogs through petting and touching gestures. Dogs usually respond to these signs of appreciation, through their dog language. They show appreciation and affection towards their human masters, through touching, pawing and light yelping. In summary, dogs often readily and instinctively express themselves, whenever they feel the need to. They use a certain language, which is a combination of vocalization, body and touch signals, to communicate with each other and with human beings. Each signal that the dog uses has a unique significance and meaning. Furthermore, the dog uses these signals in conjunction with one another, to convey a unique message to the person or dog that he is communicating with. Therefore, we, as the recipients of the dogs’ messages, should be more sensitive in trying to decipher what our dogs are trying to say. In conclusion, there is a need for humans to better understand the language which dogs use to communicate with us and with other dogs. An adequate understanding of the dog language can lead to proper communication and enhanced relationships with dogs. This will later on enable us to have an improved sense of enjoyment and appreciation of the company that our dogs would offer. On your next visit to Panama, Peru or Uruguay communicating will be easy as you read through the basics in Spanish.

The English vowels a e i o u remain similar in writing in Spanish. The alphabets all 29 of them are easy with an addition of ‘e’ e.g. Ce,de,ge and so on. A rapid one, two, three is uno, dos, tres, going upto ‘mil’ for 1000 and tres milliones for 3 million.

A dairy of a visitor to Spain:

The next time it rains wear un impermeable (raincoat). After sight seeing you can remove your unos zapatos (shoes) and relax in unas sandalias (sandals). Winters require un sueter (sweater) and una camiseta (T shirt) for summers.

Pan, mantequilla (Bread and butter) for breakfast and some refreshing café or te (coffee or tea). It is wise to carry some aqua (water).

You could shop for jackets in rosado or azul (pink and blue) respectively or chose a negro (black) sueter. Morado (violet) is a velvety colour and rojo (red) is a favourite.

You could pick gifts for your esposo ( husband) or your (daughter) hija. Your aunt (tia) and sobrina (niece) will have to wait for their turns.

You will surely miss your padre and madre (pa and mom) and you may write to them. Sabado and domingo ( Saturday and Sunday) are cool days with most time resting on your (back) la espalda. With too much shopping lists in your (head) la cabeza washing your (face) la cara will freshen you. Other errands can be done on Lunes – Monday and Viernes – Friday.

The Spanish language was formed from Vulgar Latin with lot of borrowings from Basque, Iberia and Arabic. Change is seen in the language old Spanish and modern Spanish words for e.g. efeto to efecto, licion to leccion, coluna to columna etc. Latin borrowings of original Latin words like bonus and Taurus are bueno to toro in Spanish. Dialects are different as a vela becomes candela though both stand for the candle.

Today, there are many Spanish classes conducted everywhere to help people learn and enhance their compatibility to the fast moving world. It is necessary though however fluent one is in the language to understand various dialects and factors affecting the change in grammar variables. All this calls for a comprehensive study of the Spanish language.

Body Language

Body language is the most valuable asset you have when attracting women. They did a survey some time ago about men approaching and 80% of woman said that they would prefer a guy approaching with a smile on his face. You have 80 different muscles in your face so USE them.

Your body language is the most effective weapon you have when interacting with a woman. Women make approximately 30 judgments about you within the first 30 seconds and most of it is portrayed via your body language. Women will listen to your words but if you can learn how to use your body it can work to your advantage. You can create enthusiasm by using your body, you can build anticipation, build attraction, come across as confident, strong, mature and MORE.

Everything matters with body language from your hands to the stance of where your feet are and YES all women notice this. Women can feel your energy and power when you portray good strong body language and you will send chills down their neck.

So how do you use your body when talking to women? Well if I got you to imagine a depressed person, I am sure you would be able to do it. Head down, shoulders shrugged forward, body stiff and closed in, eye contact at the floor.

Now if I told you to imagine yourself as if you had just won a championship how would you be holding your body? Head up, shoulders back, chest out, eyes level, stance.

So how do you approach women? First of all I will suggest what you must not do when talking to women. Don’t fidget, all guys make this mistake and it is not attractive, guys will sway, play with their jewelry, look around the room, hands in pockets, lean in toward women, stand too close, touch woman too early on, hold eye contact for too long.

You need to find the balance for body language and you need to get a woman to believe that you are way too comfortable for the situation, that nothing bothers you about talking to her as it shouldn’t. You should be powerful having your shoulders back and your feet should be shoulder width apart taking up room. When standing still you should always have one leg in front and shoulder length apart and one leg slightly bent. When talking to women always lean back and make eye contact but don’t stare, look at let her know that you are comfortable and she does not intimidate you.

Having your hands in the back of your pockets works and using your arms and hands when talking will stop you from fidgeting, try to always keep your hands just above your waist when interacting with a woman. Never walk straight toward a woman and get right into her face always talk to a woman from the side at the start and then slowly turn in towards her or more so the women will turn into you.

By doing all of these subtle little movements with your body you will come across as strong and powerful and a man, without even having to OPEN your mouth. So be confident with women and remember that confidence is nothing but a state that you put yourself in. You can’t get confidence it is something that you create inside of yourself.

Language Misunderstandings

Yolanda Ramos Self Improvement/self help 2007-12-04

Icame to this country twenty-eight years ago with my parents, my brother and four sisters. We came from Colombia, South America to my uncle s house. They had lived in Pennsylvania for fifteen years, and I noticed that my younger cousins didn t speak much Spanish at home and we did not speak English at all. In my country we take English as a second language, and we just learn to say hello, how are you, thank you; just the basics. So we were kind of worried.

My sisters started to go to school, and learned English very fast. I went with my parents to a school for adults to learn the language. There were people from so many countries, so many languages and cultures, it was amazing. We had never experience that before. It was good to know that we were not the only ones having a hard time with the language and adjusting to this country. By the way it s really hard to get used to this country, but it s worth it, I love it. I thank my uncle and his family for the great opportunity they gave us to come here.

One month later I started working at a factory because I needed to help my parents so we could start a new life and become independent. At the factory I met a lot of people from everywhere, but especially from Puerto Rico. One day I said something to my coworker from Puerto Rico. I don t remember what, all I know is that she started laughing and I was wondering why. Then she said that I had said something that to them had a bad meaning. From that day on I blocked that word from my vocabulary. After that I was very careful when I was talking, but of course it kept happening.

Now that I have kids and my husband is from Puerto Rico. It is hard sometimes to teach them about the differences in cultures because even though we are both Hispanic we both come from different backgrounds. So what my children have now is a mix of both cultures.

Not so long ago I met somebody from Cuba, she is my neighbor. I was talking to her and we both were talking about a fruit tree, but the word that we use for that tree in my country means something totally different to her. So I went and show her the tree, and we both started laughing about it, because what we call this fruit tree means something that we should not say. Language and culture come together and interact with each other. That is one of the reasons why computers will never replace the work of a human translator. Also, we should not assume that because somebody speaks two languages they are the right person to translate a document that is targeted to another culture, for example. That s why whenever somebody needs a legal document in Spanish or any other kind of project like advertisement, translation of websites, brochures, etc. I always recommend them to get a professional translator.

LANGUAGE WARS

Jane Davenport News Society/culture 2007-08-12
View Detail
I watched Chicago's Channel 11 – WTTW – last evening. It was a program intended to raise money from the listeners -- fund-raising for WTTW.

This program was Andre Rieu: Radio City Musical Hall. Andre Rieu is Holland-Dutch and his programs that I've seen prior to this were in another language, with the English translation on the screen. This program, coming from New York, was in English and Rieu's English is VERY GOOD.

It was a 2-hour program. Slightly more than half was program. The balance was "pitch."

Andre Rieu's programs are OUTSTANDING. This was no exception.

Rieu spoke of the fact that New York was a great big wonderful city. He also said that it had more nationalities there than any other city IN THE WORLD – AND THAT THEY ALL GOT ALONG.

(There are undoubtedly some exceptions to that, at least from time to time. But, basically, it's true. New people come here. Maybe there is friction for them at first. But, eventually, it "smooths out." "West Side Story" or not, more new people LIVE than die prematurely because of their nationality.)

A substantial part of this program was Rieu's introduction of the Harlem Gospel Choir. It performed. Then it was joined by Rieu's "Choir of Special Voices" – mainly white. The two groups sang together – some nice stuff. The show then went on with various other performers and ended up with EVERYONE SINGING THE HALLELUJAH CHORUS. WOW!

Rieu also thanked that huge audience in Radio City Music Hall, as well as the millions of us watching TV, for our beautiful reception of him and our cordiality to his group. The audience liked that.

I wrote an earlier article suggesting there is "danger" in the attempts to create new definitions for old words by today's teenagers. It seems to escalate over the years. My thought is that it was the different languages of EACH country in that vast area called "Europe" that caused/enabled/promoted WARS! If people can't talk together and understand one another, how can they get along with one another? Rieu's program included all kinds of music – music from every "generation" of music. The only people who might not have understood parts of it were people who had "different" definitions of words than we who are still the "majority."

I understand that the teenagers are hanging on to "their" language – bringing it into their workplaces – and I think that's dangerous.

For instance, there couldn't be programs such as Andre Rieu's if audiences had different word definitions from one another. I understood what I heard, but "you" (all the people who speak the "new" kid language) wouldn't. –Right in New York! – and every other place in the country!

What I hope is that the non-teenagers will STRONGLY RESIST attempts to change the meanings of our words. Some words DO change meanings over time, but slowly. It seems to me that we are able to "handle" this.

But having the younger people putting one definition on a word and older people using their long-standing definition is a sure way to start wars – of one kind or another.

Look back at Europe's wars before English became as widespread as it is now. It obviously helps that so many Europeans learn English as a second language. Changing the meanings of English words would surely cause an awful lot of trouble.

Baby Language

Most parents wish that their baby would grow up without crying. But remember that without crying your baby will not be able to communicate anything with you. Accept the fact that crying is a way of developing the baby language. Especially, in the first six months, babies cry to communicate their needs. As a parent, you cannot always tell, but many mothers in due course will be able to recognize their baby's needs from the type of cry. The most common reason for babies to cry is hunger. But there are many more common reasons for them to cry too. If your baby cries after a feed, do not jump to the conclusion that the feed was inadequate; instead look for probable reasons other than hunger. Babies cry to express their needs as they cannot communicate otherwise. Given below are the various reasons for which a child/baby cries. As a parent it is important to comprehend the baby language i.e. the reason of cry.

Some common reasons are:

Hunger: In the early part of their lives, babies may need to be fed at short intervals, sometimes in even less than two hours. Frequent feeding will help and over time your baby will space out his/her feeds.

Thirst: Usually not seen in breast-fed babies, but can happen to bottle fed babies, more so in summer.

Diaper-change: If the diapers are left on too long, it can cause painful and uncomfortable rashes. Frequent changing of diapers can prevent these troubles.

Too hot, too cold: Since babies are unable to change their clothes or uncover themselves on their own, they will cry to let you know that they are uncomfortable. The proper way is to feel your baby's body. If it feels cool, add a blanket. If he/she is sweaty or hot, remove a layer of clothing.

Uncomfortable clothes or positioning: Check to see if there is anything poking your baby like a price tag or a piece of Velcro. Change his/her clothes or give him/her some time being naked or swaddled in a warm blanket. Also, change his/her position of sleep. If he/she is lying on the back put him/her on his/her back.

Bowel movements: Some babies will cry, scream and get pink in the face just before passing urine or bowel movement. Once they are done they will be okay.

Anxiety and fear: Sudden movements and loud noises can trigger crying. Be gentle with your baby.

Boredom: Babies who are bored cry to get your attention. Picking up your baby and interacting with him/her can put a quick end to the crying spell.

Tiredness: Babies always don't know that they need to sleep when they're tired. It's your job to calm them down for naptime, not stimulate them.

Sometimes you and your baby can get into a crying cycle. When babies cry, you get anxious and start panicking. Your baby senses this, feels uncomfortable and cries even more. If you find yourself getting into these cycles, talk to your doctor. A sick baby will cry, but will also have other symptoms of illness like runny nose, fever, tugging the ear or diarrhea. Generally a healthy baby will have a strong, loud cry. If your baby's cry becomes weak, contact your doctor right away.

Crying is almost synonymous to baby language. A child primarily expresses it's emotions by crying, making sounds, laughing etc. In the initial stages, it is no cakewalk for a parent to comprehend their child's needs. But with passage of time, the message is communicated effectively and it is an important step in bonding between a parent and child.

C Language

Jesse Miller Computer/Software 2007-12-30

The C language has six bitwise operators that can be used to perform calculations with binary digits (bits).

The bitwise & AND operator resembles the logical && AND operator in as much that it requires two operands. The logical && operator should not be confused with the bitwise & operator. Unlike the && operator, which only returns a value of either 1 or 0, the bitwise & operator returns a variety of numbers. With bitwise & AND the operator compares each individual bit of a binary number and returns a 1 or 0 for each comparison. The end result is a series of ones and zeros that are converted to their decimal number equivalent. When both compared bit values are 1 a zero and one comparison returns a zero bit value, also comparing two zeros returns a zero bit value. If both bits have a value of 1 the & AND operator returns 1 for that part of the comparison, otherwise it returns 0 for that part. If both the values are 1, the operator returns 1 for that comparison.

The & AND operator continues making comparisons across each pair of bit values until it completes those in the left-hand column. Like the bit wise & AND operator the bitwise OR operator requires two operands. The l OR operator works just like AND operator but produces different results. The bitwise & operator will only return bit value of 1 when both operands are themselves 1, whereas the bitwise I OR operator will return a bit value of 1 if either operand is 1.

The bitwise I operator will only return a bit value of zero when both operands have a value of zero. If both bits have a value of 0 the I or operator returns o for that part of the comparison, otherwise it returns 1 for that part. The I OR operator continues making comparisons across each pair of bit values until it completes the data provided.

Like the bitwise & AND operator and the bitwise I OR operator the bitwise XOR operator (exclusive OR) also requires two operands. The XOR operator works in a similar way to the OR operator but is subtly different. The bitwise I OR operator will return a bit value of 1 when one or both operands are themselves 1, but the bitwise XOR operator will only return a bit value of 1.

Lexis

General items are outwith, meaning outside of; pinkie for little
finger; doubt meaning to think or suspect; and wee, the Scots word for
small. Correct is often preferred to right meaning morally right.

Culturally specific items like caber, haggis, and landward for rural.

There is a wide range of legal and administrative vocabulary inherited
from Scots. depute /ˈdɛpjuːt/ for deputy. proven /ˈproːvən/ for proved,
and sheriff substitute for acting sheriff.

Phonology

Pronunciation features vary among speakers, and there are regional
differences:

* It is a rhotic accent, with r usually pronounced as [r] (an
alveolar trill), though sometimes flapped [ɽ] or constricted [ɹ].

* The differentiation between "w" in witch and "wh" in which, [w]
and [ʍ] respectively.

* The realisation [x] for "ch" in loch, technical, etc.

* L is usually dark, though in areas where Gaelic was recently
spoken — including Dumfries and Galloway a clear l may be found.

* The following may occur in colloquial speech, usually among the
young, especially males. They are not usually regarded as part of
SSE, their origin being in Scots:

* The use of glottal stops for [t] between vowels or word final
after a vowel, for example butter /ˈbʌʔəɹ/ and cat /ˈkaʔ/.

* The realisation of the nasal velar in "-ing" as a nasal alveolar
"in'" for example talking /ˈtɑːkɪn/.

* Vowel length is usually non-phonemic and operates in varying
degrees across varieties and gives Scots their distinctive
"clipped" pronunciation. That is generally the same as in the
Scots language.

Some speakers, however, distinguish some pairs by vowel length, for
example leek /lik/ vs. leak /liːk/, vane /ven/ vs. vain /veːn/, creek
/krik/ vs. creak /kriːk/, etc.

* SSE usually distinguishes between [ɛ]-[ɪ]-[ʌ] before [r] in herd-bird-curd,
in Received Pronunciation these have merged into [ɜː].

* SSE contrasts [o] and [ɔ], before [r] as in hoarse and horse.

* Many varieties contrast [oːr] and [uːr], as in shore, core and
door, floor, poor, moor.

* fool and full have [u] or [ʉ] or [y] in SSE where RP
differentiates.

* Many varieties have the cot-caught merger, so that cot and caught
are both pronounced with [ɔ]

* cat and cart have [a(ː)] where RP differentiates.

* SSE usually distinguishes between [ʌur] and [ʌuər], in flour and
flower.

Syntax

Syntactical differences are few though in colloquial speech shall and
ought are wanting, must is marginal for obligation and may is rare.
Many syntactical features of SSE are found in North American English:

* Can I come too? for "May I come too?"

* Have you got any? for "Do you have any?"

* I've got one of those already. for "I have one of those already."

* It's your shot for "It's your turn."

* My hair needs washed. for "My hair needs to be washed."

Other examples are distinctively Scots:

* She's a bonnie lass. for "She's a pretty girl."

* Dae ye no/nae ken? for "Don't you know."

The Azeri Language

The Azeri language, also known as Azerbaijani, is official language of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Azeri language is also spoken in parts of eastern Turkey, northern Iraq and in the southeastern area of the Republic of Georgia. There are approximately 27 million native speakers of the Azeri language.

The Azeri language is derived from the Oghuz family of languages and is most closely related to the Turkish, Persian and Arabic languages. It was brought from central Asia by the Seljuk Turks and was greatly influenced by the vocabulary, cadence and grammar of Persian and Arabic.

In its early formative stages, the Azeri language made use of various loanwords and phrases of Persian and Turkish origin The Azeri language eventually developed its own vocabulary and syntax.

While the Azeri language has many different dialects, speakers of these dialects tend to be mutually intelligible to each other. The main difference derives from the separation of Azeri-speakers in Iran and those found in the Caucasus region. The Iranian Azeri dialect contains many more loan words from Persian and Arabic than does the Caucasus dialect.

It is worth noting that the Azeri language has been written in several ways. Presently, the Republic of Azerbaijan officially uses the Latin alphabet. Until 1929, the Azeri language was only written using the Arabic alphabet. The Latin alphabet was used although less than a decade later the use of Cyrillic was also implemented.

Finally, in 1991, the Latin alphabet was reintroduced to write down Azeri, though all three alphabets- Cyrillic, Latin and Arabic- may still be seen in use throughout the regions that utilize the Azeri language.

Language courses USA

With technology quickly bringing the world closer together, the barrier of distance has been chipped away with the advent of the telephone, the fax machine, the mobile phone and the internet. However, with machine-based translation a long way from being perfected, the language barrier still stands firm; and the only way to get an accurate contextual translation is to hire a translator or take it upon yourself to attend a few language courses and gain a decent understanding that way.

London is a perfect example of vast multiculturalism in action - while the city is the greatest provider of English courses in the country, over 300 different languages are spoken throughout the city thanks to its huge immigration rates and popularity as a holiday destination with nations all over the world.

There are hundreds of possible reasons to learn a new language, however. Maybe you're relocating for work, or you have foreign friends or family with whom you'd like to speak with more confidence. Perhaps you want to resurrect a language you learned at school - for example Spanish courses are readily available for those living in the USA, not least because of the prevalence of the Hispanic culture in many areas but also because of the relative ease of the language when compared with other European tongues.

With a huge range of language courses USA-wide, there's no excuse not to take up a language, if only to take a few more well-earned chips at that pesky language barrier.

Common Language Runtime

Jesse Miller Computer/Software 2007-12-20

The .NET Framework consists of three main components they are common language runtime, .NET Framework Base Classes and the user and program interfaces.

The Common Language Runtime (CLR) is one of the essential components of the .NET Framework. CLR is the environment where all programs using .NET technologies are executed.

It provides services such as code compilation, memory allocation, and garbage collection. The CLR allows the execution of code across different platforms by translating code into Intermediate Language (IL).

IL is a low level language that the CLR understands. IL is converted into machine level language during execution by the Just-In-Time (JIT) compiler. During JIT compilation, code is also checked for type safety.

Type safety ensures that objects are always accessed in a compatible way. An 8-byte value to a variable of size 4 bytes, the CLR will detect and trap such an attempt.

CLR consists of a set of common rules followed by all the languages of the .NET Framework. This set of rules is known as Common Language Specification (CLS). CLS enables an object or application to interact with the objects or applications of other languages.

The classes that follow the rules specified by CLS are termed as CLS-complaint classes. The classes defined in the .NET Framework class library are CLS-Compliant.

One of the specifications defined in CLS is Common Type System (CTS), which provides a type system that is common across all languages. CTS define how data types are declared, used, and managed in the code at run time.

The CTS also defines the rules that ensure that the data types of objects written in various languages are able to interact with each other. The size of integer and long variables is the same across all CLS-complaint programming languages. While executing the program, the CLR plays an important role.

The source code consists of instructions for the compiler, and an executable program consists of instructions for the processor. Therefore, compilation converts source code to machine language.

The conversion of source code to machine level language happens in two stages. In the first stage, the compiler translates code into an IL instead of machine level or assembly level language. In the second stage the conversion of IL to machine language is done at runtime by the JIT compiler.

Language Vs Freedom

The independence of our country has been achieved through different movement before and after 21st February but it is a significant fact that we are solely indebted to 21st February to accelerate the movement of freedom and consequent upon such critical composure, the 26th March has been emergent as a realm of the foundation stone of a nation's birth. In the next when men and women were expediting the resistance against all sorts of evil doings like exploitation, corruption and injustice, the movement of 21st February was a milestone to flourish and to direct the way as to how our freedom and salvation from unbounded restless would be terminated from socioeconomic life of the people. The common people of this C. We think that we could not achieve our freedom if 21st February was not emergent in 1952. Due to the movement of this day, we have shown our agitation against the rulers of the then Pakistan. To speak the truth, the 21st February, as a symbol of blaze illumination is our rectitude for which our survival as Bengali nation has been reflected through out the whole world.

In order to keep prestige of language and freedom of the country irrespective of all classes of people of our country have bequeathed to create resistance against the conspiracy of our survival like the people of a free stste. They have intensified the movement by degrees and being polemical, the then rulers have trespassed them and ultimately they had shot them dead. This is such a movement where our heroes have laid down their lives for the cause of elevated deportment of our mother Language. In the whole world, such unprecedented movement has never been taken place. With due advantage of our mother Language, we need to be particular in carrying out responsibilities from our different positions and the state of being enthusiastic for constructive work for the nation. But as ill luck would have it, some of ours young university and college going students are sheer from their education and as a result, they are not being able to be dutiful for the country. They are busy with capricious and reprehensible work of the society. We cannot expect such harvest from them because their guardians are conscientiously spending money for them. But they are making quintessential crimes and stigmatizing them to a great extent. After the emergence of our country as a free state, we have been passing through great hardship of ideal expedient personnel to build effective workforce in our country. If we would like to serve our country, we need to pay homage to our national hero who have been dedicated for the cause of national prominence towards our mother language.

Like the bounded responsibilities, this year has carried out the day of language and freedom with due somber mood and prominence. We celebrate both the days' day with honour according to the heritage of the country. As the day of our mother language is mixed with our Independence Day, it has been mixed with our blood. In different seasons, in the climate of our country, new dimensions of beautified nature are reflected which is treated as the symbol of progress and prosperity in question. In every stage of development, the mainstream criterion of realism of our mother language is transparent and unpremeditated to the realm of our belief and religion. There is no denying the fact that we have accepted such a trend of life, which is uniquely coherent and not related to the lively-beings of western culture. These are ultimately the vital points to save us from being stigmatized by others. Ours is a developing country and we are passing through a great perturbation against terrorism, bribing, perfidiousness and capitulation and the cause of policies of misleading the people. We want all the ends of such mischievous activity from the social life. We should memorize the great sacrifice of the martyrs who had saved our mother Language by dedicating their lives. Consequent upon this, we achieved the 21st February as an ‘International Mother Language Day’ in 1999. This is a great achievement in the world to show our best regards to our Bengali Language. It is a rare example in the history of mankind.

In fine, if we would like to preserve the prestige of Bengali nation, we need to pay great eulogy praise to the martyrs for the cause of our mother language and freedom. To speak the truth, ours some dedicated young men have come forward to protest against the decision and aggression of the then Pakistani rulers. In the face of strong opposition, the Pakistani soldiers had killed uncountable people for their self-callous gluttony and power to suppress this nation. The two incidences rare in the history of mankind. If we observe the history of the world, we will see that no nation has resurrected their blood for the cause of language movement. They had laid down their lives for the restoration of democracy and freedom of economics. Their activities are undoubtedly of heroic deeds. If we dedicate ourselves for the cause of equality and liberty of our country, their departed souls will be complacent and effulgence. In every year, we celebrate this day by showing homage to them and shower the flowers to the ‘memoirs in order to solemnize their great bestowal achievements contributed to the dignity of our mother Language. In this respect, a remarkable statement of Robert Frost is worth mentioning:

“ The wood is lovely dark and deep,

I have promises to keep

And I have miles to go before I sleep

And I have miles to go before I sleep’’

Hypnotherapy Language Secrets

Andrew Hansen Self Improvement/advice 2007-01-26

Hypnotherapy is at once mysterious and intriguing with many people searching for a supposed 'hypnotherapy language secret' to reveal its truth.

The methods that hypnotherapists use to induce behavioral changes have not been written about in great detail and often the ability of a therapist to produce those changes have been hard for even the therapist to describe if required.

In the last 30 years two scientists now recognized by most as having developed the science we know as Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), went on a mission to understand the complexities of the hypnotic techniques of certain hypnotherapists in an attempt to be able to model their behavior and produce similar results in clients of their own.

They have provided us with concrete explanations of some of the inner workings of hypnosis and in doing so given every day individuals the ability to employ to some extent the technology hypnosis offers in their every day lives.

This article will examine the science of hypnosis and attempt to illustrate just a few of its more powerful techniques and principles.

The Map is Not The Territory

Hypnosis is based on the notion that each of us lives our lives in reaction not to what is actual reality but to a model of reality (known as a representation) that over the course of our existence we have created.

This explains why two people can react completely differently when confronted by the same situation. Each person has a set of beliefs, fears, likes, dislikes, wants, experiences, values and thoughts that create a model of the world and of reality to which they often unconsciously adhere.

This is often why communications between two people goes haywire. One person is trying to convey a message from their reality to someone with a completely different reality where every chance exists that the communicator's message has a completely different meaning! It follows then that habits such as smoking or overeating are the result of behaviors caused by these models we have of reality.

By altering those models, a hypnotherapist can alter behaviour. This is the focus of any type of therapist, whatever their chosen method; to alter a patient's way of thinking to allow access to a more positive and beneficial type of behaviour.

The only difference is that in the majority of cases, the methods of hypnotherapy are able to achieve the same results in much less time than traditional therapy. The question is how?

History of Language

John Smith Business/Business 2008-04-30

It is a known fact that all animals commute with each other through language and body gestures. But it's only the humans who have developed a system of communication amongst themselves.

Since ancient times the language is changing continuously and still we have new words / lexicons in the modern language itself.

There is no strong evidence about the origin of language but according to researches there is a conclusion that languages came into existence from 3000 B.C. Initially the language was adopted by nomads of Eastern Europe and West Asia and during 2000 B.C. Indo-European languages begin to stretch across Europe, Atlantic Coast & Mediterranean regions. Another language which did come into prominence during this era was Semitic language which found its origin in tribal clans of Arabia.

Today the English is the primary language of North and South America, Australia and New Zealand though we have about 5000 languages in operation (1/3 are just from African subcontinent)

Though the languages in its initial stages were not subject to race but subsequently it followed a pattern and now we could map a particular race with particular languages. Like Persian was the language of Persia (now Iran), Arabic became the prime language of the Arabs, Mandarin for the Chinese and Devnagri for Hindus etc.

So there is separate history associated with respective language but here in this article we would discuss the history of one of the prime language - English language.

English language originates from West Germanic Language (which too originally evolved from Anglo Frisian dialects, German Settlers & Roman troops in major parts of England, Germany & Netherland). The German tribes who ultimately give rise to English language interacted with Roman Empire as a result they borrowed some words from the Latin also so sometimes English language is termed as "Borrowed language".

There are 3 classifications of English:

Old English - Native language for England. Derived from Anglo-Saxon.

Middle English - Came into existence around 1066 A.D. Derived from Anglo-Norman.

Modern English - Language came into prominence since 15th Century. Blend of Greek & Latin words.

Though we are amidst of modern English language but still there are several other regional and tribal languages which are on continuous evolution and improvement.
