Infant Care

Caring the infant is not an easy task and requires special care and attention. They have no means of communicating except their cries. An Infant has to be given a balanced diet in all stages of their growth to enable them to be healthy and strong. They should be vaccinated in time to prevent them from viral attacks, which make them fall sick.

Essential things to consider for infant care

Diapering your Baby: It is easy to become an expert at changing your baby's diaper -- just wash your hands, gather the following items and make sure you keep everything out of your baby's reach:

A fresh diaper: If you are using a cloth diaper, you will need either a clean diaper cover or pins and waterproof pants.

Baby-wash supplies: Diaper wipes or, if your baby is just one month or has diaper rash, cotton balls and warm water for cleaning and a small towel for drying.

Ointment: If necessary, for diaper rash (preferably one containing zinc oxide)

Cornstarch-based Powder: If needed, which should be applied to your hand and not shaken on your baby to prevent it from getting into your baby's lungs

Swaddling your Baby: The first few weeks in the wide-open world can be unsettling for your newborn baby who recently emerged from the closeness of the womb. Swaddling, or wrapping your baby in a blanket can help him feel secure as he adjusts to his new environment.

Swaddling is effective for the first few weeks after birth. After one month, swaddling, which inhibits movement, can restrict your baby's development. Do not swaddle a baby in an especially warm room because overheating is a risk factor. If your baby does not enjoy being swaddled, it is fine. Holding your baby in a sling-type carrier is another best way to help your child feel safe and secure.

Bathing Your Baby

Bath time can be a wonderful and loving experience for both you and your baby. Here is some advice for approaching the task with good sense and confidence.

You may need to spot-clean daily in areas that get particularly sweaty, oily or dirty: the diaper area, face, neck and skin creases. Before you begin, make sure you have everything you need: Washcloth, Mild soap, Baby shampoo, Cotton balls, hooded towel, Rubbing alcohol, Cotton swabs, Diaper, and Clean clothes.

There are many recognized Child Care centres across the world, which provides infant care services to cater to the needs of the working parents. These services are exclusively provided for infants between the age group of 2 months to 18 months. In addition to providing with reliable care services, they strive to meet and develop the physical, cognitive and psychosocial needs of the infant in a safe and conducive environment.

These centres are also equipped with trained and registered nurses or qualified infant care teacher to attend to the basic health and safety requirements of the infants. Additionally these Child Care Centres are also regulated by the rules and regulations of the Child Care Centres Act.

Infant Eczema

Amanda Fain Health Fitness/Health Fitness 2007-04-22

Mild eczema in the form of skin rashes often affects infants between ages of 2 months to babies of 2 years old. It usually occurs on the forehead, and cheeks, though it can spread to any other body parts. But unlike in adults eczema in infants usually goes away by about 3 years of age. In contrast, adults usually have recurring eczema. In a small percentage of babies eczema continues as they grow into children or sometimes even into adulthood. These rashes might lead to dry and scaly skin or blisters. These are very itchy and painful for the baby.

Eczema in babies can be inherited from some family member, or can be caused by allergens in baby’s diet. Other factors which might aggravate the condition are synthetic chemicals coming in contact with the baby’s skin, like soaps, detergents, and man made fibers in clothing and toys.

Keeping the skin clean and moisturized is of foremost importance. Use of lukewarm water and a good baby-care product really helps a lot. Preferably use simple, loose clothing made of cotton instead of synthetic, tight-fitting fancy clothes. Also avoid any sudden temperature changes while bathing the baby. Animal fur is a known irritant, keep your pets clean to avoid this danger.

For small cases of skin rashes a home remedy and simple care is sufficient in the majority of times. For severe and/or persistent problems a child dermatologist must be consulted. Doctors might suggest the use of medicated creams containing mild topical steroids for short term use which will provide good relief from atopic eczema. All medication should only be taken if they are prescribed by your doctor. For more info see http://www.eczemacuretreatment.com/causes-prevention/eczema_types.html

Food is one of the biggest causes of eczema, and so any suspected allergies to good should be tested one at a time so it is possible to lock onto whatever is causing the problem. Each such test must be given a few weeks of time as it may take a few weeks to get the proteins from consumed food completely out of the mother’s breast milk and the baby’s system.

With due care and simple precautions you can often save your baby from any discomfort caused by eczema. Medications can be prescribed by your doctor if you are unable to resolve the problem yourself.

Fortunately most children will outgrow the eczema themselves by the time they reach their teens.

Intercountry Infant Adoption

Matt Ryan Home Family/Parenting 2007-01-21

One reason many adoptive parents opt for adopting a child from a different country is the fact that, even though any adoption runs the risk of some uncertainty, it is often more predictable than domestic adoption. Meaning, the waiting period is easier to determine and generally runs anywhere from one to three years depending on the country.

This is especially true in regards to adopting an infant, as there are younger children available for adoption in other countries than domestically. Some statistics rate that in some countries almost 45% of children available for adoption were less than twelve months old. Conversely, in the United States, almost 42% of children available for adoption are between the ages of one and four years old.

Most of the countries that are open for international infant adoption are the developing nations in Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Africa, and Central and South America. Each country has different adoption rules and prospective adoptive parents find it useful to educate themselves about these rules prior to choosing a country to adopt from.

Couples will find the ages of infants available for adoption internationally will vary greatly depending on the country chosen. It is not uncommon to find the age variant to range from just a few months old to upwards of 16 years of age. Many of the countries require that an attempt be made to place the child with a family in the country prior to placement with a non-citizen couple. In addition, children below the age of four months are generally not allowed to be adopted internationally by the sending nation.

Most countries will require the adoptive parents to make at least one, if not many visits to the country itself prior to selecting them as potential parents for a child available for adoption. This must be taken into consideration as it can often raise the costs involved with adopting an infant to proportions that may be out of the financial reach of the couple.

When taking into consideration what country to adopt an infant from it is also a good idea to begin researching adoption agencies to help with the adoption process. Time must be taken to research all available adoption agencies to be sure the one chosen is experienced, reputable and licensed with a good license standing their respective state of licensure. The correct adoption agency should be willing to help with every small step of the adoption process, including: helping parents become adoptive parents, aid in the paperwork, verify all legal matters of the adoption are handled properly and provide support after the infant is brought home.

After choosing an agency prospective adoptive parents will then need to go through a similar procedure as those opting for domestic adoption. They will need to have a complete home study done, have interviews done and provide health documents. In addition to these requirements, they will also have to meet the eligibility requirements of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Finally, before being matched with an infant for adoption adoptive parents will need to put together a package of their personal documents. This package is called a dossier and will contain pertinent records relating to identity, finances, marriage licenses, health statements, criminal background clearances, proof of employment and personal references.

After completely the preliminary steps to adopting an infant from another country the adoptive parents need now, only to wait to be matched. The process may seem drawn out, lengthy and at times confusing but the rewards adopting a child via intercountry adoption will be endless.

Infant Yeast Infection

Brian McQuirk Health Fitness/Alternative Medicine 2007-11-07

You may not know it but there is an infant yeast infection. Any baby can get an infant yeast infection which commonly occurs in the moist diaper area. Infant yeast infection is possible because the infection can be transmitted through child birth if the mother is infected with yeast. Infant yeast infections can also be caused by the mother failing to keep female infants clean in the vaginal area. Infant yeast infections also can be caused by inappropriate bathing of the child. An infant yeast infection will typically start out like a diaper rash, but it won t go away and it won t heal like a diaper rash.

It can sometimes be difficult to tell the difference between infant yeast infection or diaper rash. That does not eliminate infant yeast infection as the diaper area is often affected. The second most common form of infant yeast infection is oral thrush in the infant s mouth. An infant yeast infection can happen on the skin, such as in the folds of skin in the diaper area that remain moist all of the time and see little air flow. During the birthing process, a mother may pass the yeast in her vagina to the baby's skin, causing an infant yeast infection. Also, if the baby sucks his or her thumb or fingers, an infant yeast infection of the cuticles can develop. However, if an infant yeast infection does ensue no matter how careful the caregivers are, there are several ways in which the pediatrician will treat the infection. In the case of infant yeast infection in the diaper area, a special topical ointment will be prescribed, along with directions to keep the diaper off the baby as much as possible to increase the passage of air and allow the infant yeast infection to dry up on its own.

The plastic covers that some babies wear over their reusable diapers are a really bad idea for an infant yeast infection, because the plastic is a moisture barrier, and that is precisely the opposite of how to treat an infant yeast infection. Generally, though, yeast infections, particularly infant yeast infections, are most likely in those who have a weak immune system to begin with. In other words, an infant yeast infection is most likely to develop in the sickly child. Also a baby on antibiotics is more susceptible since the medication will kill the healthy bacteria that help to keep down an infant yeast infection. You should take a baby to the doctor to have an infection properly diagnosed especially if you haven t dealt with an infection of this kind before. If the same child has a recurrent problem of yeast infections then perhaps your doctor can help with some suggestions on how you canprevent an infant yeast infection.

Infant

Typical yeast infection in infants is thrush. It is a condition where you can find white patches and sore in the infant's mouth. There is nothing more sad than an infant in distress, and an infant with a yeast infection is the same. Since a yeast infection spreads through an infant's digestive tract, a yeast infection can involve the mouth (thrush) and the diaper area. Try looking at your infant's diaper rash to find out if the rash has lots of bumps, pus-filled bumps, or a pattern. If you are worried and a first-time parent, by all means, have the infant's doctor take a look at the rash. If your infant does in fact, have a yeast infection, your doctor will most likely recommend any of numerous over-the-counter (cream) remedies for anti-fungal purposes.

Symptoms

In some instances, the infant or child could experience full blown systemic-candidiasis-symptoms. However to those that suffer from the symptoms of a candida infection, the pain and effect on their lifestyle is very real. It is our hope that one day, candida will be recognized as the menace it is, so that all can be free of the debilitating symptoms and confusion it inflicts on the lives of those who suffer from it. Yeast infections generally include a variety of symptoms; redness, dryness, burning, and itching.

Infant Allergies Often Misdiagnosed

John Hilaire Health Fitness/Health Fitness 2007-10-10
View Detail

When people speak of infant allergies, they usually are talking about the three main causes of allergies, foods, inhalants and environmental. With an infant, many allergies may show up quickly, especially when they are breast feeding.

Since infants cannot express a feeling of itchiness typically caused by allergies, uncontrollable crying may be the main symptom of suffering from infant allergies. Depending on the age and mobility of the infant, they may also roll and struggle attempting to scratch the offending area. Dry skin may be visible behind the ears and on the scalp and may be thought to be cradle cap. If it appears behind the ears it may look as though the child is not being washed thoroughly, but it will not wash off.

Swelling may also occur in the face or lips and if swelling is seen, the infant's breathing must be monitored as with most infant allergies the throat may also swell and it could lead to anaphylactic shock, leading to possible death. Some infant allergies may manifest as breathing problems or a runny nose and be treated for colds. They may also show sinus problems and develop a cough due to nasal drainage into the throat while sleeping.

Breast Feeding Can Exacerbate Allergic Reactions

Many health professional advise mothers who will breast feed their infant to shy away from foods known for causing allergic reactions such as nuts, corn, wheat and seafood, among others. If the infant allergies are caused by something in mother's milk, the infant may suffer from a bloated stomach, constant gas, throws up often or cries constantly. Many physicians will mistake infant allergies as colic and tell parents to wait for the child to outgrow it, typically about six months. In most cases with infant allergies, eliminating dairy products from the mother's diet will generally ease the symptoms.

If you believe infant allergies are being caused by sources other than food, there are a few things you can try to eliminate the causes. Try using laundry detergent without perfumes or dyes as well as fabric softeners without perfumes as well. Do not spray chemicals in the child's bedroom, such as furniture polish or air fresheners with perfumes and keep the room as free of dust as possible to avoid the possibility of an Allergy to dust mites.

Until the cause of your infant allergies are identified, do not allow pets into the child's room and, when possible, change the child's clothing at nap time and bed time and always give the infant their bath at bedtime.

Infant Massage - benefits of Infant Massage

Infant massage seems to be sweeping the world at the moment - it's popularity has exploded within the last few years, much of which is due to Vimala McClure and the IAIM. But, as with most natural healing techniques, it is by no means a new thing. People have been massaging babies for centuries. Once again, it is the Western World that is slow on the uptake. But we are learning, and more and more people are being trained to be able to teach this art to the people who need to know.

Infant massage is a wonderful, loving way to welcome your baby into the world. Sharing the massage experience is calming and benefits both of you, strengthening a bond that will last a lifetime.

Infant massage instruction for families with babies who are typically developing, and follow up with continuing education classes ranging from working with families with infants and children born biologically or environmentally at-risk or with special needs, learning more in-depth facilitation skills to work with a wide range of parent populations and situations, or receiving personal supervision or consultation.

Massage can help ease the muscles into relaxation, and when practiced on a regular basis, teaches the infant what relaxation is and how to go about it. And as a side-benefit, the massager gets to take time out to gently massage their baby and they usually de-stress at the same time!

Infant massage encourages a good relationship between mother and baby. It gives them a place and a time to be together, free from the worries and pressures of everyday life. It gives them space to just be together, not changing nappies or making dinner, shopping or sterilizing bottles. Infant massage instructors teach infant massage - once the mother is confident to massage without thinking about what move comes next or if they are doing the stroke correctly - then comes a time of real communication between mother and baby. Watching and learning from each other, and getting to know who the other person is.

Benefits of Infant Massage

Relaxes Infant
Loving touch lessens tension, fussiness and irritability. Digestion is aided and this can provide relief of gas and colic. Massage is also a wonderful way to lessen stress parent and baby.

Helps normalize muscle tone and improve blood circulation. Babies cry less, as the parent is more responsive to babies’ cues.

Enhances Bonding
Touch conveys nurturing and love, the essential ingredients for emotional and physical growth and well being.

When parents massage their babies, they promote quality time, create better bonding and increase confidence in their own parenting skills. They enhance intimacy, understanding and the ability to nurture.

Aids Growth and Development
Studies have shown increased weight gain, and immune function. Myelination of nerves is also increased. These things in turn are needed for brain and muscle development.

Massage can begin from the day the baby is born, but many parents start later having been taught by health professionals or having been on a course
Massage is an excellent way of connecting with your baby if you are a working mum. A short massage each night before bath time can help your baby feel loved

Infant massage improves communication
The close interaction helps improve the ability to understand your baby's body language. They will respond with more sensitivity and confidence. Baby feels heard and respected, and grows up with a healthy self-image.

Improves Baby's Sleep
As your infant learns to relax and release stress, sounder and longer sleep is often the end result.

Infants are cute however they are a lot of work. We often think that we are going to know everything right away! Well...that is just not the case! Are you having trouble sleeping, does it seem like the baby cries all night? Wondering when you will have time for you again? Welcome to the wonderful world of parenting! Parenting is a beautiful thing yet sometimes we feel so helpless.

What type of things can you do to help keep your sanity and taking care of you while caring for an infant is also important. Here are 3 tips to get you through the infant stage:

Tip-1 Remember to sleep as they sleep: This is a big one it is important for you to get your sleep. However this can be difficult with an infant. Sleeping when they nap is the easiest way to ensure you get all your recommended sleep. Don’t worry it will get easier in few months when they sleep longer during the night.

Tip-2 It is ok to multi-task: Many times as mothers we try to hold our children, especially infants all the time. This is just not feasible. You must try to do things for yourself as well. Use of a baby monitor works well in this case remember it is ok to take a few minutes away to brush your hair or get dressed!

Tip-3 Utilize the help of others: When we have new babies or Infants in the house family and friends offer to help out. Don’t be afraid to leave them for a couple of hours. Get some much needed rest, or just enjoy yourself. Taking care of baby can be a 24 hour job and a break every once in awhile is necessary and completely understandable.

Taking time out for your self as well as the baby will get you through the infant stage. Many women have postpartum depression and getting in time for your self could help elevate the feeling that having a new born or infant can cause. Taking time for yourself is just as important as taking care of your infant!

Sudden Infant Death syndrome-Diseases

Robert Baird Health Fitness/Health Fitness 2008-02-19
View Detail
What is this condition?

Also called crib death, sudden infant death syndrome is a medical mystery of early infancy. It kills apparently healthy infants, usually between ages 4 weeks and 7 months, for reasons that remain unexplained, even after an autopsy. Typically, parents put the infant to bed and later find him or her dead, often with no indications of a struggle or distress of any kind. Some infants may have had signs of a cold, but such symptoms are usually absent. Sudden infant death syndrome has occurred throughout history, allover the world, and in all climates.
What causes it?

Sudden infant death syndrome accounts for 7,500 to 8,000 deaths annually in the United States, making it one of the leading causes of infant death. Most of these deaths occur during the winter, in poor families, and among underweight babies and those born to mothers under age 20.

Although infants who die from this disorder often appear healthy, research suggests that many may have had undetected abnormalities, such as an immature respiratory system and respiratory dysfunction. In fact, the current thinking is that it may be caused by an abnormality in the control of breathing, which causes apnea (prolonged nonbreathing periods) with profound hypoxemia (decreased oxygen in the blood) and irregular heartbeats. Bottle feeding, instead of breast feeding, and advanced parental age don't cause sudden infant death syndrome.

Although parents find some victims wedged in crib corners or with blankets wrapped around their heads, autopsies rule out suffocation as the cause of death. Even when blood-tinged sputum is found around the infant's mouth or on the crib sheets, autopsy shows an open airway, so choking on vomit is not the cause of death. Typically, these infants don't cry out and show no signs of having been disturbed in their sleep, although their positions or tangled blankets may suggest movement just before death, perhaps due to terminal spasm.
What are its symptoms?

Depending on how long the infant has been dead, the infant may have a mottled complexion with extreme bluish discoloration of the lips and fingertips, or pooling of blood in the legs and feet that looks like bruises. Pulse and respirations are absent, and the infant's diaper is wet and full of stools.
How is it diagnosed?

Diagnosis of sudden infant death syndrome requires an autopsy to rule out other causes of death. Characteristic histologic Endings on autopsy include small or normal adrenal glands and petechiae over the visceral surfaces of the pleura, within the thymus (which is enlarged), and in the epicardium. Autopsy also reveals extremely wellpreserved lymph structures and certain disease characteristics that suggest chronic hypoxemia, such as increased pulmonary artery smooth muscle. Examination also shows swollen, congestive lungs fully expanded in the pleural cavities, liquid (not clotted) blood in the heart, and curd from the stomach inside the windpipe.
How is it treated?

If the parents bring the infant to the emergency room, the doctor will decide whether to try to resuscitate him or her. In "aborted sudden infant death syndrome," an infant who is not breathing is successfully resuscitated. Such an infant, or any infant who had a sibling stricken by this disorder, should be tested for infantile apnea. If tests are positive, a home apnea monitor may be recommended.

Because most infants cannot be resuscitated, however, treatment focuses on emotional support for the family.

What is an "Infant Compromise"?

Gary E Rosenberg Reference Education/Legal 2008-04-20
View Detail
The N.Y.S. Unified Court System, in its on-line Glossary of Legal Terms (see http://www.courts.state.ny.us/lawlibraries/glossary.shtml#) has the following definition:

Infant's compromise: a civil proceeding or motion for obtaining court approval of the settlement of an infant's claim a civil proceeding or motion for obtaining court approval of the settlement of an infant's claim.

Legally, an "infant" is a person under age eighteen. In New York State, an infant's case can not be settled without the approval of a judge, not even if the parent wants to accept the settlement. This situation typically arises when the infant has a claim or lawsuit for personal injury arising out of an accident. The reason is simple: to protect the minor and keep the money safe until he or she is at least eighteen years old.

New York State's Civil Practice Law and Rules provides at Sections 1206 and 1207 for the authority of the Court in these matters. A judge plays several roles. First, the settlement can be refused, if for some reason the judge feels that it is inadequate, in other words, not enough money. Second, and as important, the judge can order where the funds are to be held or invested for the infant. Usually, the attorney recommends a proposed course of action for the investment.

The judge also approves the attorney's fee. If the judge feels that the attorney is seeking too large a fee for too little work, then the lawyer's fee may be reduced.

If the sum of money involved is not large, and the infant is not suffering from any kind of mental disability that would prevent him or her from managing the money at age eighteen, the money is usually ordered to be deposited into a bank account and held jointly with the bank, for the ultimate benefit of and use by the infant. Large settlement amounts or infants who may be receiving government benefits (such as Medicaid or SSI) present a special challenge.

In those circumstances, special trusts, designed to give the child some use of the money while preserving government benefits, may be in order. Sometimes the lawyer may call on a consultant to devise a "structured settlement." A structured settlement is designed to invest the infant's money profitably, while ensuring that the money is paid out over time, and not all available to the infant at age eighteen. Structured settlements can span years, with payments made monthly or quarterly, and with larger payments timed to coincide with anticipated college tuition or the purchase of a home, or anything that the infant, parents and attorney can anticipate.

Under certain rare, emergency circumstances an infant's money can be withdrawn early - before the eighteenth birthday. But this requires a judge to approve the request, and judges are careful to ensure that the money is not being used for the family's regular living expenses.

Some terminology:

An infant or infant's "compromise order" is the paper signed by a judge approving the settlement of the infant's claim, authorizing payment to the attorney, and empowering the infant's parent to sign a release settling the claim.

An infant or infant's "compromise hearing" is the courthouse meeting where the judge considers the settlement. Present are the judge, attorney, parent and infant. Typically, the judge makes sure that the terms of the settlement are fair and understood by the parent and, if he or she is old enough, by the child. Also, that they know that the case or claim is being settled and disposed of forever; there is no going back for more money, at any time. The judge may also ask the infant some questions about his or her physical condition, to try to see if any injuries have healed, or look at any scars that the infant may have suffered, as part of the process of evaluating the fairness of the proposed settlement.

Infant Botulism Treatment Information

Infant botulism is an illness that can occur when a newborn ingests bacteria that produce a toxin inside the body. Infant Botulism affects infants primarily between one and 52 weeks of age. The condition can be frightening because it can cause muscle weakness and breathing problems. Infant botulism can occur when a child ingests Clostridium botulinum bacteria, which are found in dirt and dust and can contaminate honey.Infant botulism is considered to be distinct from other types of botulism which differ considerably in the age most commonly affected and in the clinical course. The "food borne" form of botulism most often occurs in adults.

Older children who eat improperly prepared or stored food. A form of botulism can very rarely occur in wounds. Botulism (botulinum toxin) is also of concern as a bioterrorist weapon. The earliest and most common symptom of infant botulism is constipation. Other symptoms include general weakness, a weak cry, a poor sucking reflex, irritability, lack of facial expression, and loss of head control. Symptoms may arise abruptly, in a matter of hours, or they may develop over several days. The progressive weakness usually develops over 1 to 4 days and is often severe enough to bring the baby to medical attention.

Infant botulism can be treated with botulism immune globulin (BIG), which should be started as early in the illness as possible.
The single most effective way to prevent infant botulism is for infants to avoid honey. Honey is safe for people 1 year of age and older. Breast feeding also appears to lessen the severity of botulism cases. The use of a human-derived botulinum antitoxin may also be of benefit. The antitoxin was licensed by the U.S. One of the only things you can do to reduce the risk of botulism is to avoid giving your infant honey or corn syrup before his or her first birthday.

Infant Botulism Treatment and Prevention Tips

1. Given the baby intravenous (IV) fluids to provide nourishment.

2. Botulism can be treated effectively with botulinum antitoxin.

3. The most effective way to prevent infant botulism avoid honey.

4. Breast feeding also appears to lessen the severity of botulism cases.

Solving Infant Sleep Problems

Simon Peters Home Family/Home Family 2007-08-09
View Detail

Infant sleep problems are common during the first three months. When your baby experiences sleep problems, he or she may develop irregular sleeping patterns or experience disruptions that result in waking up at night.

Be aware that no one method can solve infant sleep problems. This means that if the infant and parents are happy with a certain routine, then this method works best for them. Waking up other family members when the infant wakes up in the middle of the night is not a good idea because it will affect the sleep of everyone in the household.

Reliable Routine

The most important thing you should do to solve infant sleep problems is to develop a reliable routine that will work for you and your baby. This routine should consist of all the things you do in helping him or her get ready for bed. Some bedtime routines include a short playtime, a bedtime story, midnight feeding, diaper changing or taking a bath.

Many parents find themselves sleepless because their baby wakes up in the middle of the night. When this happens, the best way to prevent this infant sleep problem is to provide your baby with effective sleep associations. A sleep association is a thing or routine that your baby links to falling asleep.

It is important that you put your baby to sleep when he or she is still slightly awake. It is not good to let them get used to falling asleep while nursing, being rocked or drinking milk in a bottle. This is because when you baby wakes up, he or she will need the same conditions he experienced in falling asleep in order to go back to sleep. Teaching your baby to fall asleep along in his or her crib will help in preventing infant sleep problems.

One of the most common mistakes that parents make is to allow themselves to become a part of their baby s sleep associations. When this happens, expect your baby to cry in the middle of night and relax only once you arrive. To prevent this, you can give your baby a stuffed toy, blanket or other objects that they can incorporate with their bedtime routine.

Infant sleep problems normally stop when you baby is around five to six months old. However, when your infant continues to wake you up in the night or find it difficult to fall asleep, then you should ask a doctor about possible health conditions your baby is experiencing.

The Agony of Infant Acne

The nine month course of the pregnancy is a stressful period for both the parents. There is a sense of joy in the family as the new born arrives in the family. Infant acne can be a cause of great stress for the parents. Parents get extremely disappointed and concerned when their newborn’s face breaks out giving rise to red bumps. Baby acne or Infant acne is in fact a common occurrence and as many as 20% of all infants. A newborn is usually affected by it at the time of birth or within 3-4 weeks after the birth and is more commonly observed among baby boys then there female crawling parts.

Infant acne is commonly found on the cheeks of the baby but is sometimes observed on the forehead and chin as well. Infant acne is generally caused by baby's skin to male (androgenic) and female (estrogenic) hormones after the delivery. At the last stages of pregnancy a mother passes a lot of things to the baby including the things she eats from minerals like calcium, iron, and hormones etc. These hormones cross the placenta into your baby causing the oil glands on the skin to form bumps that looks like pimples. A new born can also be affected by it during breast feeding. Sometimes infant acne can be seen in the form of rashes that appear on the baby’s skin after birth but the get bad within couple of weeks. Infant acne is a temporary disorder and should not be treated through oral or chemical medications. Treatment to reduce the irritation and itching caused by infant acne can be used so that the baby doesn’t cause scars by scratching the skin. It usually goes away when the baby is 4-6 months old.

The other thing to be avoided is the use of harsh detergents on baby cloths as it can irritate the sensitive baby skin. Baby clothes should be clean at all times as bad hygienic conditions could be a fort for bacteria which can lead to infant acne.

Coping with Infant Sleep Disorders

Chris Towland Reference Education/Reference Education 2007-03-28
View Detail
Unfortunately, sleep disorders can plague infants as well as adults.

There are many types of infant sleep disorders, however a physician is often the only person who can properly diagnose them.

Infants have irregular sleep patterns because of their need to frequently eat. There are some sleep disorders that are learned behavior instead of a legitimate disease. These types of sleep disorders can be overcome without medication by changing the child’s environment and gently teaching them to improve their sleep habits.

As a child gets older, they go through a period of having nightmares. Sleep terrors or night terrors are other forms of sleep disorders. The child usually outgrows these forms of sleep disorders.

Infant sleep apnea is defined as an infant who stops breathing for short periods of time in their sleep. This type of sleep disorder is diagnosed most in premature babies. In fact, it is a proven fact that a premature baby is more likely to have sleep apnea than a baby that is born at full term.

Usually, all that is needed is to rub the baby’s back or nudge them and they will start breathing on their own again. In rare cases, infant CPR is needed to revive the baby.

Bringing home an infant who suffers from sleep apnea is a very scary time in any parent’s life. The fear of their child stopping breathing in the middle of the night can cause any parent to sit up all night beside the crib.

Before any hospital releases a baby who has been diagnosed with sleep apnea, the parent or parents are required to go through an infant CPR course.

When the baby is released, it is usually with a piece of machinery called an apnea monitor. This type of monitor is attached to the baby’s chest with electrodes that monitor the baby’s breathing. The monitor is adjusted to each baby and will only sound if it detects abnormal breathing patterns.

If the baby’s breathing is too shallow or stops altogether, the monitor will sound a loud high-pitched alarm to alert you of the danger.

For anyone who has experienced this sound, especially in the middle of the night, it can be a heart stopping experience.

The baby needs to be attached to the monitor all of the time he or she is sleeping. During waking hours, it is not necessary to use the monitor.

Medical personnel will go to your home and take readings from the monitor to make sure that it is working properly and also that it is being used properly. They will then forward a report to your baby’s pediatrician for him or her to monitor.

Only your baby’s pediatrician can determine when the monitor is no longer necessary. He or she will discuss with you the progress of your baby before any decisions are finalized. Acne - Infant Acne

Paul Rooney Health Fitness/Fitness Equipment 2008-04-22

Infant acne, although sometimes alarming to the parents,is quite a common condition. Infant acne will probably come and go until the baby's hormone levels have stabilized at about 4-6 months of age. Now because it is such a common condition, there are lots of myths and old wives tales about infant acne, so what we want to do here is give you some facts about the condition so that you know what to do should your child have acne. There is a difference in the type of acne an infant has though. Infantile acne is the acne which normally occurs from about three months of age and can last anywhere up until about 12 months, whilst there is also newborn acne (also known as baby acne) and this occurs shortly after birth.

First of all lets start off with the fact that infant acne is not caused by dirt. This is important to point out because over washing an infant can cause the skin to dry out and make the condition worse. What you should do for the child's washing routine is just wash the face with water and perhaps a mild cleanser, preferably one that is specifically for infants, and if you do this once daily it will keep the skin clean without causing undue dryness or irritation to the skin. After washing, make sure that you gently pat the skin dry and not to rub dry. The condition can become more active when the baby's skin is irritated by other factors such as harsh soaps, spit-up, saliva, milk, or being overheated.

Some babies may be born with a number of rashes, or they may develop rashes or dry skin, which may appear similar to acne. These rashes are very similar to the rashes and dry skin that adults get and of course there are treatments on the markets for them, but you do have to be very careful which one you choose. The reason for this is that babies have very sensitive skin; therefore adult acne products are not safe for them. A baby's skin can get easily irritated and may break out with red bumps and this can lead to further aggravation of the problem. However just to reiterate, these are products for dry skin and rashes that look like acne, acne products, on the other hand, are much too harsh and should never be used on a child’s skin.

Babies can also develop acne from the way that they are handled. This can occur through the bacteria that causes the outbreaks developing from the adults they are exposed to. Babies can develop pimples, pustules and even blackheads like adults, but under no circumstances should the parents pick at the acne.

As mentioned, infants can also suffer from pimples. Pimples are known to show up between 2 weeks and 2 months of age. This kind of baby acne can last until the child is 4 to 6 months old. And the reasons pimples occur is because of when a whitehead does not turn into a blackhead and plugs the pore so that it can be expelled. Again, pimples are very common in infants and are a part and parcel of growing up. Also check that the car seat can be installed without the base, in case you need to ride in a different vehicle. The seats should also have headrests that adjust and, of course, an integrated belt guide.

Mothers would agree that covers that are removable and washable at 40° C are preferable.

Medicine for Infant Colic

Does your child cry excessively for what appears to be no reason at all? Is it wearing on your nerves? Would you rather hear nails screech across a chalk board than have to listen to your infant’s cry one more time? Well, don’t despair! Have I got some “medicine” for you! Now, I use the term “medicine” here very loosely, for during my time as a mother I have realized the best medicine for infant colic is not gripe water or gas drops, but efficient burping, effective swaddling, and gentle motion.

One of the best doses of medicine for infant colic is an efficient burping. With my first child, I only knew of two ways to burp a baby over the shoulder and over the knee. No matter how high I tried to put my child up over my shoulder or how long I burped him for, I had a hard time getting every bubble out of his tummy after a feeding. After looking into it, I learned a few other methods (such as the bouncing-on-the-knee method) that took every burp out of his tummy, every time, within just a few minutes. Needless to say, he was much happier after we discovered these alternative burping methods.

As a first-time-mom, I also didn’t know how to effectively swaddle my baby. Did you know babies need to be immobile to feel secure? It’s true! A child from 0-3 months does not have control over his limbs. If his limbs are left loose to move wherever they want, the baby realizes he/she has no control and feels insecure and frightened. I use the term “effective” swaddling, because if it is too loose and your child can wiggle their arms out of it, it is not doing you or baby any good. So here is one more “dose” of medicine for infant colic effective swaddling.

The last dose of medicine for infant colic is gentle motion. Babies are used to constant motion in their mother’s womb. Mimicking this with a swing, rocking, or gentle bouncing will remind your child of the womb’s environment, thus making him/her feel calmer and safer.

It’s no spoonful of sugar, but I hope this dose of medicine for infant colic helped. If you would like to learn more about the tips and techniques I have discovered during motherhood, please feel free to check out the following site. I have put a list of a few books and reviews on there that helped me through with my first baby. The first few months with your baby are priceless; don’t spend them stressed out over colic. If you are expecting, look into ways to prevent colic before your baby comes so you and baby can enjoy these lasting moments together.

Tips To Treat Infant Reflux

MIKE SELVON Health Fitness/Health Fitness 2007-12-22
View Detail

While more than half of all babies experience infant reflux in their first few months of life, the condition usually resolves itself within 12 to 18 months. Often times reflux symptoms are similar to colic or the average infant fussiness. Here are some basic guidelines to answer the questions, as to how to tell if reflux is the culprit and what you can do.

Babies spit up... a lot. This happens because the lower esophageal sphincter (the valve that closes the throat) isn't fully developed yet and the soft tissue allows for liquid to come back up just as easy as it went down. Generally, as the child ages this will be less of a problem, although it's possible that he or she may have infant reflux.

Aside from being kind of gross, it can be a sign of GERD (a severe version of reflux resulting in awful pain, vomiting and poor weight gain) or Pyloric Stenosis (a rare condition where a narrowed valve prevents stomach contents from emptying properly into the intestines).

You should seek medical advice if your baby resists feeding but seems hungry, isn't gaining weight, has fewer wet diapers than normal and seems lethargic, spits up forcefully, spits up green or brown fluid, or spits up more than a few tablespoons at a time. If your baby sounds hoarse all the time, has diarrhea or difficulty breathing, then definitely ask your doctor about this infection.

While breastfeeding, try to keep your baby in a slightly upright position by holding, using pillows or a feeding product, such as the Pollywog Nursing Positioner. It's also possible you're simply feeding your baby too much at once. Try smaller feedings, which could reduce the incidence of regurgitation.

If you're bottle feeding, you may want to try a different bottle, such as Dr. Brown's Natural Flow Bottles, which are specially designed to reduce air bubbles that trigger burping, ear fluid and infant reflux. There are also other formulas that your baby might digest better.

For babies with merely infant reflux and no milk allergies, Enfamil AR is designed for them. However, if the milk-based formula seems to upset your baby, soy-based, lactose-free or hypoallergenic formulas are available.

In fact, approximately 25% of babies in the US are on soy-based formulas. Isomil and Prosobee are two popular soy-based formulas on the market. Hypoallergenic formulas include: Alimentum, Nutramigen, Pregestimil, Neocate and Elecare.

Don't lay your baby down on his or her back after feeding. Often, babies cry when they're laid on their back after spitting up because the acid burns and causes added discomfort.

Some products are available, such as "the tucker sling/wedge," which is a soft pillow combined with a Velcro strap that allows babies to rest on their stomachs at a slight incline. Similarly, the "Amby Baby Hammock" will encourage babies to sleep in a slightly upright position, instead of laying down in a crib. Another helpful product is a "swaddling blanket," which eases fussiness in babies and can assist babies who develop infant reflux from stress-related agitation.

When all traditional methods fail, medication can treat severe GERD symptoms. Decreased dosages of Zantac, Nexium, Prilosec and Tagamet have been prescribed for infant reflux. In some cases, surgery can tighten the improperly functioning esophageal muscle associated with the reflux.

Thoughts Involved In Infant Adoption

Wade Robins Home Family/Parenting 2007-08-24
View Detail

You might think about adoption of an infant for multitudes of reasons. Prospective parents are looked at more closely than birth parents will ever be. The home, life, and medical conditions, are run through a save. Those who want to adopt a baby form another country have been denied because of smoking or being too big.

Out of the country adoption is the in thing right now because of the fact that well-known people are doing it. The dispute about taking a child from one country to another is ongoing.

You might not find the amount to adopt that is necessary because of the high counts of children and infants needing a home through the world. The new technologies are making better ways for parents to conceive their own children. Any child with a special need is not easy to put into a home. When the child becomes a teenager, the placement becomes harder.

The majority of people wants an infant and thus is the cause for the need of infants. The want of the parents to raise the child goes beyond the ties of being a birth child. Being able to bond with that child is just like giving birth. Adopting an infant needs the same attention to murmuring as if they had this baby biologically. Many parents take the child into the family immediately

The amount of agencies that are working with adoptions is higher and the need for one that has a good reputation is essential for you. The support of those around you is also needed. The patience and time will be tried. This choice will make a difference in the lives of all involved in the process. For more info see http://www.childadoptionguide.org/ on baby adoption.

The part of the process for you to decide if you are going to inform the child of being adopted will eventually arise. Many parents go with the truth and start out at a young age telling the child so they will be able to understand. Infant adoption means that the responsibility is held by the parents until the right time to tell them. It is a chance to give the child a special place because of the choice that you made when you were seeking a child. You chose them. The child may choose to find their birth parents and will need you to be understanding about it. The first meeting might be a joyous one or an angry one. It makes no difference why the child was given up it will be awkward.

Top 5 Infant Carseat Features

david hoffman Home Family/Parenting 2007-10-15

There are literally hundreds of different carseats sold in the US market today. Even though all the carseats sold in the US meet the safety requirement in a crash test, it is still a good idea to buy a carseat with a better set of safety features.

We will help you go through 5 of the infant carseat features that are important to your baby's safety.

1. 5-Point Harness

There are two kinds of infant carseats in the market: 3-point harness and 5-point harness. The 5-point harness usually straps the baby in better, and provide better protection against ejection when used properly.

2. Head Protection

Some infant carseats come with a layer of EPS foam or similar materials along the sides of the child's head. This layer of protection could improve side-impact crash safety.

3. Built-in Locking Clip

Many carseats require the use of a metal locking clip. This is to ensure the seatbelt holding the carseat in place does not loosen over time. However, many parents do not use them correctly, and many others don't use them at all! A built-in locking clip is easier to use, and more often provide a snug fit. It also eliminates the possibility that parents would lose the clip or simply throw it away.

4. Two-piece Chest Clip

A two-piece chest clip can minimize the possibility of ejection during a crash when used properly. It is also harder for a baby to reach the chest area, so there is less chance for the baby to loosen it.

5. Compatible Seatbelt Installation Option

Some carseats provide a few seatbelt installation options; others only the most common ones. Check your car to learn the seatbelt system (especially older models), and buy the baby carseat that support that particular seatbelt system. Remember - a carseat that is not installed properly is an unsafe carseat.

Infant Massage and Your Baby

Andrew Stratton Health Fitness/Alternative Medicine 2007-12-16
View Detail

There is a growing trend towards infant massage. Some mothers are learning these special techniques, or taking their children to baby classes where they can learn the proper movements.

There is actually proof that these rubdown techniques not only relax your baby, but more importantly, aid in their development into intelligent, happy children who are fully aware of the world around them.

The Benefits

Although it is a new trend, studies have been conducted by education experts to see how infant massage influences kids and mothers. There is a wide range of physical, mental, emotional and developmental benefits to the practice. These studies also show that these techniques help kids to interact with adults more easily.

Physically, these specific movements stimulate babies' nervous systems. In particular, it speeds up the process called myelination, which promotes communication between the brain and body. This is very important in early growth, because it means that they will be better able to develop control over their movements.

Another benefit is that it helps with circulation and respiration. When the blood flows through the body more easily, it helps to get rid of toxins, and regulate all the body's important functions. Better circulation also means better sleep.

Studies have shown that these techniques help babies' immune systems develop. There has been a link observed between this technique and the production of white blood cells that help to fend off diseases. Infant massage has been particularly helpful to babies that suffer from life-threatening hereditary diseases.

Baby massage also helps with digestion. A good, routine session will help a baby get rid of gas, reduce constipation and prevent colic.

Helping Your Baby Relax

Encouraging relaxation is one of the most important overall benefits of the practice. The kneading movements reduce muscle tension and anxiety. This contributes to better sleep, which is as important to a baby's health as a proper diet.

Infant massage not only relaxes kids, but aids in their development. In order to develop into healthy toddlers, babies need lots of stimulation. This can be stressful and difficult for them, but these proper stimulation techniques get them acclimated with regular daily doses.

This helps them get ready for the stimulation they will receive as they become more used to the world around them. It helps get them started reacting with their world, an important first step in the development of a young child.

When we start teaching our toddler important life skills, this experience with stimulation gives them a head start. Babies who have had a regular massage routine often show traits of intelligence and calmness in early life. Studies have shown that these children also show lower levels of hyperactivity when they are toddlers and young kids.

Finally, the practice helps the child bond with caring adults. As a parent, learning these techniques can be a great way to help your baby develop. You can also take your baby to classes, where a masseuse who has undergone training can show you how it is done. This is a wonderful way to get your child used to adults and the world around them.

Infant massage, either done at home with the right techniques, or in classes where they have specialized training, has wonderful benefits for a new child and parents.
