What are hobbies for some people are professions for others: a chef may enjoy cooking as a hobby, while a professional game tester might enjoy playing (and helping to debug) computer games. Generally speaking, the person who does something for fun, not remuneration, is called an amateur (or hobbyist), as distinct from a professional.
There are many hobbies, some of them i wolud explain which i like most.

1) Games: A game is a structured or semi-structured recreational activity, usually undertaken for enjoyment (although sometimes for physical or vocational training). A goal that the players try to reach and a set of rules concerning what the players can or cannot do create the challenge and structure in a game, and are thus central to its definition. Many games help develop practical skills and serve as exercise or perform an educational, simulational or psychological role & also roaming.

I am very much intersted to play Badminton, its very interesting game for me.

2) Music: Musical composition is a great outlet for creative people who know or are learning to play a musical instrument. While composing music can be a self learned topic, there are many great tips and hints that can help you on your journey. There are many great websites with theories and explanations regarding composition. For those who would like to get started with computer composition there are great software products, few of them are Finale, FlexiMusic Kids Composer(for kids) Composer for young peoples and professionals, Noteworthy..., you can try out for free. Also for more in-depth lessons there are some great books teaching the basics and advances issues dealing with musical composition.

3)Cooking: Cooking is an act of preparing food for eating. It encompasses a vast range of methods, tools and combinations of ingredients to improve the flavour or digestibility of food. It generally requires the selection, measurement and combining of ingredients in an ordered procedure in an effort to achieve the desired result.

4) Photography: Some people are very intersted to make an unique photos, few people would seroiusly like to do astrophotography, what is it? It means,it is a specialized type of photography that entails making photographs of astronomical objects in the sky such as the Moon, Sun, planets, stars, and deep sky objects such as star clusters and galaxies.

There are more and more interesting hobbies out there, so people should realize their interest and do it as hobby, at future it will create you an expert of your capacity and interest.

Hobbies That Pay

Many people have hobbies. Retirees and housewives often have hobbies to help keep them occupied during moments of relaxation or boredom. But not many people realize that you can make money from most hobbies. By taking your hobbies and turning them into cash at flea markets and swap meets, you can easily earn a modest income while having fun.

Crocheting is one of the highest paying hobbies. Crochet thread is often inexpensive while still being durable, washable, and delicate in appearance. Crocheted table cloths, curtains, and bedspreads can be completed within a month by most experts in the craft, and can be sold for hundreds of dollars depending on size and pattern.

Other home decoration hobbies like wreath making, basket weaving, or wood working can also be turned into easy income. Quilting is also a great hobby to make money from. Since fewer and fewer people know how to quilt, a hand made quilt is hard to come by, and therefore valuable. You can often make at least a fifty percent profit on your completed quilts. Baby quilts are also very popular.

Sewing and knitting of any kind can be very profitable hobbies. Knit sweaters, baby hats, booties, mittens, and other items can be big sellers at flea markets and swap meets. Clothing items can also be sold at these locations very easily. Well made home sewn clothing is often stronger than the cheap clothes that you can get at the local department store, but can be sold for the same price or less while still earning the seamstress quite a bit of money. Wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, and prom dresses can be huge income earners for the expert seamstress.

One of the best hobbies to make money from is gift baskets. Decorating jars and other containers using appliqué, ribbons, and paint can be combined with the creative mixture of perfumes, bath oils, and bubble baths to make very pretty, country style gift baskets. These bath baskets are great for gifts all season round, including mother’s day, birthdays, and Christmas, making them a very profitable hobby.

Gardening is also one of the more profitable hobbies. If you like to garden but don’t really need everything you plant, you can take the left over to a farmer’s market. You can also simply set up a stand on the side of the road in some communities. Fresh produce is a great commodity, and can earn you a hefty income in the spring.

Ideas for hobbies:

There are as many hobbies as there are ideas. A hobby can be any leisure activity you pursue outside of your work or career. Hobbies can range from raising fish to or growing algae in your fish tank to watching the stars through a telescope. A hobby can be anything you want it to be. It can be anything you want to do. Hobbies are limitless. Just think of all of the things you have ever wanted to do, and start doing them in any small way you can. You can read books about it. For some people reading books may even be a hobby. Studying and researching various things may be a hobby. Some people are just curious and want to know everything.
I have many different interests in my life. Because of this, it took me a long time to choose a major in college. My freshman year, I was a music major, but I never wanted to pursue music as a career. It was not that I did not like music, I loved it, but it was something I wanted to do as a hobby instead.
I really like astronomy, and thought of majoring in physics and astronomy; I found it was something I also enjoyed a lot, but I decided to have those be hobbies as well.
I ended up majoring in Political Science, with minors in Russian and Business. For some people, what I studied in college is a hobby for them. Some people love to participate in politics as a hobby; others love to learn foreign languages as a hobby or personal interest; and some people like to pursue business as a hobby - this is especially evident by those who follow the stock market and invest their money as a hobby. Investing in the stock market is a hobby I enjoy myself.
Some women like to grow plants and flower gardens as their hobbies. Men also like to work in the garden or yard as a way to get away from work. There is something relaxing about working in the dirt or soil. I actually read once in a popular science magazine that there is actually a chemical in the soil that makes people feel good. It is no wonder that some people enjoy working in the yard and garden so much. It really does make you feel good.
Camping is a hobby that many people also enjoy. I know some people who just cannot stay out of the outdoors. They always want to be up in the mountains or out at the lake. Some love to fish, some love to hunt, some love to trap, while others just like to look at the scenery and take pictures. Photography itself is a popular hobby for many people and the possibilities there are endless with all of the sceneries and backgrounds to take pictures of, from city life to the mountains and backcountry.
Travel may be your hobby. Some people just like to see new things and visit new places they have never been before. I met one family who said they just could not be happy. They could not find what they liked until they began to travel. That is what made them happy, going and seeing the world, visiting new, diverse, and exotic places. The possibilities there are endless too. A new place for many people is often an hour or just a little more away. Think of all of the places you would like to visit and which ones are feasible and start visiting them. Figure out how to make the other places and hobbies feasible in the long run. In the meantime, bring your hobby ideas to life .

Hobbies for Happiness

What makes you happy?

I know when I’m immersed in one of my hobbies, I’m happy. How about you? Do you have just one hobby? Or, like me, many?

I like to move around in my hobbies. And I’m not even sure I’d call them all hobbies. More like interests.

One of the things I love to do is go metal detecting.

My cousin, Larry, bought a metal detector many years ago when we went to a gem and mining show in Victorville, California. Our first attempt at this new adventure was in his back yard. He lives in the home he grew up in. When he was young, he and his friends buried a cache of pennies and that’s what we were after.

Well, we didn’t find them. Mostly all we found was metal flashing and nails but that did prove something to us—that the metal detector was, indeed, finding metal. And, in keeping with another interest of mine – writing - I wrote an article about the adventure of searching for those pennies. It was published in an issue of Lost Treasure magazine.

That made me way happy! Here I was doing something I loved, both metal detecting and writing, and I got paid to do it. Yes! Happy happy happy!

Larry has since moved on to his interest of Ancient Egypt. Reading and researching, keeping in touch with people also interested in Ancient Egypt, traveling to Egypt, that’s what makes him happy.

And so, yipeeeee!! he lets me keep the metal detector.

Just the other day I took it out to see what treasures I could find.

Not much, before I got rained out, but that was okay. I was happy. I was metal detecting.

My last find, after recovering a whole whopping 41 cents, was three little Hot Wheels cars all in one scoop. I was smiling, enjoying the rain, enjoying my finds, as I walked to my car.

Since it was raining, I thought it would be a great time to pursue another interest of mine-weird tourist attractions. I love strange and unusual attractions and folk art environments are right there at the top of my list.

I’d been meaning to get to the Desert View Tower in Jacumba, CA for a long time but somehow it was always sweltering hot summer when I thought about it. I’ll wait till winter, I would promise myself.

I couldn’t wait any longer, though. I wanted pictures for my weird tourist attractions site NOW!

So I hopped in my little MR2 - road trips are another favorite thing for me - and I headed out to the Desert View Tower. I took the long way from Temecula through Julian and down the winding mountain road into the desert. A real road trip, rather than the Google freeway route.

Besides, my car was yearning for some curves!

When I got to the Desert View Tower it was HOT. I’d thought it might be cooler since it was raining in Temecula, but the coolness didn’t reach that far. It was nice and cool up on the hurricane deck of the tower, with the wind blowing through it. It’s open all the way around with awesome views of - I’ll give you three guesses! - the desert.

Even though it was hot, I had a fun time climbing the tower, taking pictures and clamoring around Boulder Park trying to find all the carvings in the rocks.

I was happy.

On the way home, I took the freeway route and stopped at a casino for a meal. Oh MY!!! The prime rib was the best I have EVER tasted. Good food makes me happy happy happy. And I was HAPPY. I brought most of it home and had some great meals for two more days.

So what makes YOU happy? Are you doing things that make you happy? Do you have a hobby you haven’t touched in a while? An interest you’ve always wanted to pursue but just never gotten to?

There is no better time than now to renew an interest in an old hobby or start a new one. Immersing yourself in a hobby is a great way to happiness. And, after all, being happy is what it’s all about. Right?

Fundraising With Hobbies

Using your hobby as a way to raise funds for charities adds another level of appreciation to your passion. If you enjoy building something, why not share your creations and help others in the process? Raising money for a cause not only helps fund research for a specific illness or people in need, but it helps raise awareness for a cause that might not be well known to the general public. Many times, as you will see in the examples below, a specific hobbyist gains a reputation and the public begins to look forward to new items year after year.

2007 Dollhouse Raffle Fundraiser

The Lupus Alliance of America raised over $2000 at their Long Island event last year raffling off a dollhouse that somebody made and donated. This year, the same person that donated last yearâ€TMs dollhouse has created another one to raise even more money for the organization. This yearâ€TMs creation has nine rooms spread out over three levels. A nursery, living room, kitchen and bedrooms are scattered throughout the house and its wrap-around porch adds a lifelike appeal. The entire house has a market value of more than $2200, but the person who donated simply wants to contribute to this important cause.

The Fitzgibbon Hospital Cancer Center

In July 2006, Wesley and Elizabeth Kessler donated their homemade dollhouse to the Fitzgibbon Hospital Auxiliary to help raise money for cancer research and awareness. Wesley began building the dollhouse for his wife in the 1970s as a gift for his wife. When they moved, he donated the dollhouse to the hospital. Before the dollhouse went up for auction, two hospital workers added several touches of their own. Valued at nearly $8,000 by an appraiser, it helped to bring money to the hospitalâ€TMs cancer center while at the same time provided a project that brought people closer together.

The Patricia Gage Liver Transplant Fund Committee

Exorbitant medical expenses often hit us when weâ€TMre least prepared to deal with them. When a distinguished member of the faculty at the University of Vermont had been diagnosed with a rare liver disease in 2003, the rest of the staff jumped in to help the family do what they could to help pay the medical bills. Patriciaâ€TMs husband built a customized dollhouse for his wife and offered it to the committee for auction in a raffle. The structure brought in thousands of dollars and helped the family pay off some of the medical bills accumulated since her diagnosis.

If youâ€TMre in charge of an organization that needs to raise funds, auctioning off a specially-made dollhouse is an ideal way to generate large donations. Find somebody experienced in this craft to build a one-of-a-kind creation or simply ask some specialty stores if they would consider donating one of their finished products. Some companies will do this for a tax write-off. Since each dollhouse is unique and special, people will likely pay thousands of dollars to own one, especially if their money is going for a good cause.

The Joy Of Hobbies

Arts Entertainment/Arts Entertainment 2008-03-05

There is nothing like a hobby to fill up that spare time and take away the stress and strain from the working hours. Whether collecting, playing games, outdoor recreation, or creative hobbies, there is nothing like unplugging from it all for a few hours to have some good old-fashioned fun with family and friends. People of all ages find joy in different hobbies, as schoolchildren play with toys and dollhouses and adults collect stamps or try a little creative cooking.

Collecting

One popular form of hobby is collecting. This takes the form of stamp collecting, coin collecting, car collecting, or any other form of collectible. Most people that are into collecting get as much joy out of organizing and cataloguing their collection as they do from the actual objects they collect. People that collect typically like to display their collections, too, and may dedicate an entire room or area of their home to displaying their prized possessions.

Some people have a hobby of collecting experiences, often through photographs or videos. This type of collecting is done by taking pictures of places the collector has been or of animals, such as birds, that the collector enjoys. Having pictures or video recordings of a collectible is quickly catching on and is becoming a popular and advanced way to collect. Examples of this type of collecting include train spotting, aircraft spotting, and those who observe and study underground railroads (metrophiles).

Playing Games

Lots of people love playing games for recreation, but there are some that make the playing of certain games into full-fledged hobbies. Some of the more popular games that people play for hobby purposes include chess, checkers, poker, and other variations of card games. Board games are also popular. Many people enjoy playing board games in recreational situations with family and friends, as “games nights” are becoming more and more popular among young families.

Outdoor Games and Hobbies

A lot of hobbies take place in the great outdoors, of course. Hiking, walking, canoeing, camping, and climbing are examples of some of the hobbies people enjoy outside. Often, people will group themselves and join “walking clubs” or other organizations to be around other people that share their love of the hobby. It is not uncommon to see large groups of people hiking or walking in national parks or walking trails, as these hobbies are quickly becoming more popular among young adults and older people.

Creative Hobbies

People also like to be creative when it comes to their hobbies and activities. Many people like to build things, such as cars or model vehicles, and enjoy the challenge and eventual satisfaction that putting something together from scratch can bring. Others enjoy cooking or painting to show off their artistic side. Building or painting dollhouses, model cars, or toy railroads is also popular among kids and adults alike. There are a number of hobby stores available that can provide products and advice in terms of building toys or other hobby projects, too, making starting a new hobby easy and fun.

Family Time: Doing Hobbies Together

Veronica Scott Home Family/Home Family 2008-01-22
View Detail

In today s fast-paced world, quality time with the family is getting harder to find. It s difficult enough to find the time to eat dinner together, let alone find the time to do hobbies together. But somehow we manage to find that time, even if it s just an hour or so each night. Since quality time is so precious, finding the right hobby for the whole family to participate in might be a bit of a trick, but it s not impossible.

Jigsaw Puzzles

Puzzles are a popular hobby many families enjoy together. Puzzles may not be high tech, but they do foster time for conversation and bonding between family members. First decide whether you want a large puzzle, or a smaller one. Set aside 30-60 minutes each night to sit down and assemble it together. Family members can even work on it when nobody else is around. When it s finished, glue it together and frame it, or simply take it apart and start all over again another time.

Board Games

Playing board games are a fun way for families to spend time together after dinner without staring at the TV. Some games can be completed in an hour or so, but extended games like Monopoly can be spread out over a week or longer, depending on how much fun you re having with it. You ll find that you can laugh together and the time will go by before you even know it.

Outdoor Fun

Families that play together tend to enjoy each other s company. Finding something that you can all enjoy in the outdoors helps a family to bond. Activities can be as simple as tossing around the Frisbee or hiking along an area trail. Turn one of these activities into a hobby by participating in them regularly. You ll have fun getting to know each other and you ll even get some exercise in the process.

Try Something Unique

Unique hobbies can add spark to your family time. Photography, while quite involved, could be an interesting hobby for a family to do together. This is one hobby you can tailor to your family s skill level. Whether it s simple digital photography or building a full-blown dark room in your basement, photography leaves a lot to be explored. Or try writing a book together. Have fun passing the story around and let each member of the family add a new chapter. When it s done, you can self-publish the book and have fun designing a cover or adding photos to the content.

Whichever hobby you choose to create a close-knit family relationship, make sure it s something that everybody will enjoy. If it s a chore for one person, they will likely hate doing it and they ll only resent it. If you need to, try out several different hobbies until one finally clicks. You can even participate in several different hobbies rather than sticking with one. Maybe each family member will have their favorite and you can rotate the hobbies each week. The important thing is to spend time together doing something that everybody can appreciate.

Some Top Hobbies Of Retirees

Caroline Silverstone Society/Society 2007-06-15

Retiring is a point in life that a lot of people look forward to, although most find that they are not really prepared for it. It is not so much the financial or security aspects of retiring that people today struggle with; instead, it is realizing just how much time they have on their hands once work is no longer a part of the weekly equation! Of course, many retirees will fill this extra time with travel or with work that isn t really work (volunteering, babysitting, even part time jobs in totally unrelated fields to what the retiree was doing before), but many find that hobbies are also an essential part of staying vital after retirement.

For many, retirement hobbies are something that were enjoyed during working life but that retirement allows them to focus on even more. Retirees should keep in mind that no matter how much they love any one activity, the opportunity to concentrate on that hobby consistently may mean that they grow tired of it. It is important, therefore, to have a range of hobbies during the retirement years. Here is a list of some of the most popular activities pursued by people after they retire.

Bird Watching

Although the title is still contested by gardening and amateur photography, bird watching has been demonstrated to be the most popular hobby in America today. The retired community is no exception, and bird watching combines both a great hobby and an opportunity to travel. Like any good hobby, bird watching can be as involved or as casual as the participant wishes, with high quality equipment available as well as hundreds of different resources. Clubs are available all over the United States, and of course anywhere a person travels there is opportunity to watch a new species.

Gardening

Gardening remains a steady favorite among retirees. It is a way to get outside, get exercise, create something through hard work, and add to your pantry or your home décor alike. Gardeners in locations that are not temperate, of course, will have to deal with four or five months of the year being unsuitable to their past time (unless of course they are also enthusiasts of indoor gardens and greenhouses). Still, the opportunities during the growing months are staggering; planting, tending, fertilizing and finally harvesting gardens can mean hours and hours of peace. Opportunities to enter produce and floral arrangements in fall fairs or other county celebrations also allow people to show off their craft.

Wine

Nothing has exploded world wide in the last few years in a bigger way than wine. No longer just a beverage, wine is now a commodity. For many, this hobby does not just involve redoing their basements into cellars, but also making sure that they have all the best accessories and display cases for their collections. Like bird watching, it is also a hobby that can be taken all over the world; there are many popular vacation spots that also offer dozens of wineries to be toured and tasted at. Wine enthusiasts never have a shortage of opportunity as just a trip to a local restaurant is an occasion to indulge the past time!

There are dozens of other hobbies that retirees find are a great way to invest their well earned leisure time. Photography, golf, various table games, fishing, collecting, and crafts all remain popular among retirees. A strong combination of several different hobbies will mean a very busy retirement!

Hobbies for teen girls

jennie Recreation Sports/Other sports and recreation 2008-01-21
View Detail
Adolescence is an age when all teenagers are looking for creating an individual identity. The little girl has grown up into an awkward teenager. She no longer needs her mother to feed and dress her. Nor does she require her dad to tell her bedtime stories and help her with shoe laces. She is busy creating, writing and telling stories on her own! She wants her privacy and also wants recognition in whatever her new hobby is. Influenced by peers, best friends, video games, modelling and television, she is ready to develop a mind of her own. Most teenage girls are mature enough to know what will hold their interests.

There are a wide variety of hobbies-indoor and outdoors that can keep young girls occupied. Internet, social dating and helping mom are just a few ways of keeping her occupied. Keeping her mental and physical balance is essential as she is still growing and needs help to mould her personality. Some young girls are already keeping secret diaries, learning the art of make-up, taking up Tennis, Badminton or Hockey to keep fit. Today’s generation of teenagers are computer-savvy and also aware of keeping fit with balanced diet and exercises.

The girls are more mature and keen to prove their mental wellness. Parents could encourage girls to simultaneously keep even inexpensive hobbies like stamp collection (yes, they are still a hot favourite, so what if snail mail has been replaced by email). Young girls love to cook; they can learn some simple dishes at home or join some classes.

During summer vacations there is a long list of hobbies that sprout up to choose from. Dancing, yoga, art classes, crafts, gymnastics are quite popular, as fees are also reasonable for parents to pay. Teen girls get an opportunity to make new friends and also hone their talents that could be of use in adult life. It’s a fallacy that teen girls are only thinking of hooking boys all the time. Few are reading romantic novels but most of them are reading fiction and poetry and keeping scrap books as well. Photography is a proving to be a good hobby for young girls. Well, some girls like to be in front of the camera and some behind them! Rock climbing, cycling with friends, swimming are equally satisfying hobbies.

Most girls choose hobbies that will help to keep long hours with friends. And this does not mean an investment in mobile phones (a headache for parents) only. Join a drama club or create one for a friend is an ideal way to spend summer holidays. If not an actress then getting into creative production and styling is a good option for teenage girls. Learning nail art designs has also become the most popular hobby these days. As girls learn and have fun at the same time, they develop better personalities. When they volunteer for shelter homes, baby sit and walk dogs they become more responsible. Parents can guide the girls in becoming better adults by helping them to choose hobbies that will help them in later life.

Resume Skills | Hobbies & Interests

Be honest. How many of you have one of the following in there?

Reading

Traveling

Music

Internet Browsing

If you do, you are only one of the 96% candidates out there.

Hobbies and Interests are something to talk about. It’s a window into your personality, that is beyond the standard work stuff. These are things you are supposed to be passionate about. You should be using this extensively to not just market yourself, but also to steer the direction the interview takes.

I will talk about how to manage the interview flow, but some other day. Today about your hobbies & interests.

Here are the rules:

Make them true. Have something you are passionate about. Something no one needs you to work upon, or do. Something that excites you, something that makes your eyes sparkle when you talk about it.

Make them Unique. As far as possible mention your hobby in a way that sounds unique. Use this as a lever for the interviewer to remember you. Don’t say reading, when you can say ‘classics’ or ‘Indian art history’ or something more specific. If it is music talk about genre, artist or just decade!

Make them demonstrable. You may like to think, but really that is not a hobby. If you put something like singing, be ready to sing in the interview. If you put something like dramatics, be ready to emote. Put something that can give the interviewers a little break from the monotony of taking interviews. If you say coin collection, carry a unique coin with you!

Make them relatable. Be honest at all times, but if you have more than one hobby, choose the one that the interviewers may be able to relate to. Yes, you read that right. This like all other parts of your resume needs to be customized according to the people you are sending it out to.

Get a life! If you don’t have a hobby or interest, get one! It’s not just something to talk about in a an interview, it is something to treasure and add value to yourself as an individual.

Model Hobbies You Will Enjoy

Victor Epand Home Family/Hobbies 2008-04-28
View Detail
As children, we like to play with cars, boats, and airplanes, houses and what not'miniature models. Playing with such models gives the kids a feeling of enjoying the real thing. It is observed that if given the chance to build such models on their own, children not only find it more interesting, but the exercise proves quite educational too. Children learn certain properties in geometry, basic math, physics, colors, etc., in a play-way method through activities such as model making.

How can hobby of model making prove beneficial for a growing kid? Model making requires certain qualities such as self-study, hard work, and attention to detail, precision, and above all perseverance. When a child is seriously engaged in model making, he begins to learn everything necessary for making the model of his favorite car, structure, or airplane size, the dimensions, etc. that would be helpful in making the perfect replica of the desired model.

An initiative to learn something on one's own is always welcome in a growing kid. The kid may search for necessary details in books or magazines. While working on the model, the kid will get to know the properties of certain materials such as paper, wood and metal as first-hand experience.

The expertise achieved in certain processes involved will be helpful for the kid in the longer run. The perfect model may not be achieved overnight, in a single attempt. Before a successful model-making attempt, there may be a number of failed attempts. Certain processes might take some time mastering the technique they require.

All these trials and travails of early attempts help build a much-valuable quality in a growing kid; that of perseverance! This includes certain technical aspects such as precision, an ability to work considering all the details, the creativity that helps discovering innovative ways to make best of available resources and achieving success in new and different ways, the list is endless. Not to mention a sense of achievement a kid develops at an early age after successfully doing something constructive on its own! Truly, like sports, childhood hobby such as model making can sure become a foundation for an able and confident youth.

If model making proves so beneficial for the growing children, why it should not be useful for the grown-ups then? Yes, it can be quite helpful for the adults as well. Educational Hobbies for Children

Wayne Brewin Home Family/Parenting 2008-03-24

Does your child have a hobby? I’m not talking about any video games or watching TV soaps, I mean an interesting hobby which will help them learn as well as keep them entertained for hours. Most parents would like to see their children doing something more challenging or educational and I have suggested a few ideas you can start using right now. If you encourage them and get involved as well, it might even help them stay away from a bad peer group and stay out of trouble.

A great hobby for children is playing a musical instrument. If the child has musical tendencies then some instruments can be taught from a book, such as the guitar for instance. They say it is best to start with the piano/keyboard but for piano playing and other instruments, you will probably have to invest in lessons. However there are many online videos to help you get a taste of different instruments and see if it’s for you before you invest heavily in lessons. Then practice is, of course, an essential part of mastering any musical instrument.

There is a selection of videos on our website & on you tube to get you started

Another children’s hobby is pursuing an art or a craft. Children can learn to draw, paint, or make scrapbook pages. They can learn to use modelling clay, re-create some of their favourite film & TV characters, paint them and then play with them. Beginning carpentry is a very useful hobby that may even turn into a career, or at least develop skills that will be used for a lifetime. Also tinkering around on engines or electronics is another hobby that can lead to useful skills.

There are all sorts of things that children might like to collect for a hobby. Some of the more common collections are of stamps, coins, and rocks. Stamps are interesting because they can be from many different countries, becoming a geography lesson, my brother has a massive collection he started when he 9 years old. Coins and stamps both are of historical significance, and encourage reading to learn more about different eras in history.

My four year old son always has a pocket full of stones and we have to count them nearly every night, add the new total to his scrap book and he is now copying the numbers I write and is learning about numbers along the way. As he grows he will be looking into science books to learn more about them.

Anything a child has an interest in can be collected, such as figurines for strategy games and if a child is interested in dolphins, for instance, she may not only collect dolphin figurines and posters, but also be motivated to read books about dolphins.

Construction sets also make a good pastime for children. Many people may think of these only as toys, but children who have grown up with these sets and added components to them down through the years can create some pretty impressive models. They are also gaining skills in reasoning and perception as they build.

Making models, such as cars, boats, and airplanes, has always been a popular hobby. If your child is interested in making models, you should be very encouraging. Model car kits can be very complicated and require a great deal of precision. If your child's first few creations leave a little bit to be desired, don't laugh or scold, or he is likely to never want to try to make anything again! Get the easiest kit he is willing to make and then patiently help him as much as needed.

Many children enjoy sports, making any physical activity a great hobby. Football, basketball, and Tag Rugby all come to mind, but don't forget about track and field events. Maybe your child would enjoy distance running or gymnastics. An active hobby will help your child stay in shape as well as encouraging you to be more active too.

It does not matter which hobby you support your child in, as long as you support them in at least one, because when you do you will create a bond with your child of mutual admiration and respect that will last a lifetime.

A figurine usually depicts a small animal or human figurine, but can come in many types, shapes and sizes. The current amount of types available is quite staggering making collectible figurines the ultimate collection hobby. Figurines, often called dolls or small statues (statuette's) also make fantastic home decor items as they can be placed anywhere due to their small size and can work wonders giving a home or office space your personal style.

Figurines, these days, are made from many different types of materials, like pewter, for example. Figurines used to be created for religious or ceremonial reasons, but like any piece of art, they are now found in many forms, shapes and sizes to satisfy the more decorative reasoning of our modern day culture.

Here are some types you could get: owl figurines frog figurines elephant figurines gargoyle figurines border terrier figurine eagle figurines buddah figurines great dane figurines

There are quite a few famous figurine brands which are sought out daily by thousands of professional collectors. The top two brands in my opinion include Nao and Hummel figurines and you'll see why when you go check them out!

The amount of choices you have regarding figurine types can be quite overwhelming. Most often, newbie collectors will begin with a specific type of figurine, such as eagle figurines or figurines of a specific material, such as pewter figurines. The budget for figurines can be quite low or very high, depending on what you are prepared to pay. Hummel figurines for example can cost over $200 for one item. On the other hand you could pay about $12 for a decent ceramic figurine if you prefer. Searching action sites, flea markets or other swap and trade type sites could yield many treasures if you look carefully!

Lucky for you, because of the wonders of the internet, you will certainly be able to find any figurine your heart desires. Due to the international reach of the internet, as well as the low costs of running an internet business, gift and figurine retailers could will be able to offer quality figurine products at a much lower cost then your local gift shop. Plus, you will find style or type of figurine you may be looking for. This makes the internet the collectors paradise.

So, whether you are looking for an item to create a awe inspiring collection (which will increase in value over the years!), something beautiful to decorate your home, or even a thoughtful gift for a loved one, a figurine can be the perfect choice.

Be sure to check out our large collection of dog figurines, crystal figurines and dragon figurines!

Seniors Hobbies Add Zing To Their Lives!

By Raymond Angus

Do you have any senior hobbies?

Are you fifty years of age or older? Have you ever looked into any seniors hobbies? Let me tell you why you should!

1.Hobbies for seniors are dependable prescriptions for improving physical health.

2.They're even accused of increasing age longevity.

3.They fine tune your mental mechanisms and help keep them crisp and sharp.

4.They open new doors for your social life.

5.And they're guilty of filling your days with zing.

We'll talk about zing later!

There are more pastimes that could qualify as senior hobbies than you can shake the proverbial stick at. The candidates are virtually numberless.

Here are some categories that somebody, somewhere, is already engaging in as a hobby.

Antiques/Arts and Crafts/Collecting any of thousands of things/Cooking/Electronics/Games/Gardening/Internet Hobbies/Literature/Scale Models/Music/Outdoor and Indoor Activities/Photography/Performing Arts/Toys.

The interesting thing about all of the listed categories is each group is chock full of sub categories.

What do you like to do? Do you enjoy playing golf or tennis? Are you an avid grower of flowers? Does stamp collecting start your juices flowing. Is the thought of cooking gourmet meals your answer to friends coming for dinner?

Whatever you are enthusiastic about you will find other people just as eager as you are to learn more about and discuss at length. Some seniors hobbies involve ball room dancing. There are probably groups in your very area doing it on a regular basis. They'd welcome you with open arms, literally.

The physical and mental exercise involved in senior hobbies can do wonders for you. As a matter of fact, physical workouts at a gym, or just walking in the neighborhood can be the answer to your well being.

You'll be able to meet other seniors feeling just as enthusiastic about your hobby as you are. Once you decide upon a hobby area of interest, check the local newspaper. Look for the mention of gatherings, or information about others doing the same hobby.

Medical science has learned recently about the physical and mental connection in the human body. For example, if the hobby you are interested in requires a minimal of physical activity, you will still benefit physically from the mental activity.

How?

The mental stimulation of engaging in a senior hobby you enjoy, translates into a form of physical activity. Not as emphatic as a strenuous workout in a gym.

But researchers tell us that it still creates virtual, physical effort at the cellular level. The physical responses may be subtle, but the benefits of it are nevertheless felt by the body.

Finally, lets talk about zing. No, it's not a far eastern philosophy from asia. The best definition of zing would be to categorize it as your feelings about the life you lead. Do you awake each morning with an eagerness for the day ahead?

Or are you just as weary as when you laid down the night before? Do you want to mentally spring out of bed and charge full bore into the newly born day?

Or do you dawdle in bed trying to put off getting up and going through another boring daily routine? Do you actually look forward to bedtime in the evening so you can fall asleep again?

If your answers to the latter questions are yes...then my friend you need the zing, and all else, that a senior hobby will give your life. You are in serious need of enthusiasm, anticipation and the social companionship that a senior hobby will bring into your life.

Start a senior hobby today! Go for it!

Hobbies - Guitar - How To Start!

John Pawlett Arts Entertainment/Music 2007-01-14
View Detail

Playing the guitar is one of the most popular hobbies in America. Millions of Americans play the guitar as a leisure activity; and why not? It is one of the easiest musical instruments to learn and the most popular music of the day is played on the guitar. Many people do not realize how easy it is to really learn to play the guitar. Some people, who first begin learning to play the guitar, try to learn a very hard song from the start. Then they start thinking they will never be able to learn to play, that they just do not have that natural musical talent that some people have, when really they just picked a hard song.

Some people try to play the guitar for only about a week and expect to pick it up that quickly. If they cannot do it in a week, then again they think they just do not have that musical talent. All of that is nonsense Not even an experienced musician would be able to pick up the guitar and learn it in a week. He or she would know how the music works and understand how the guitar is supposed to played, but it still takes a little time to develop the correct motor skills with your hands and fingers.

Anybody can pick up the guitar and learn to play some of their favorite songs if they just stick with it for a little while and practice for only a short period of time each day. To begin playing the guitar, all you have to do is learn a few chords. Most rock, country, or other popular genres or songs can be played with only a few easy chords on the guitar. They say with only three or four chords you can play most rock songs ever written. Most people I have taught to play the acoustic guitar or electric guitar, if they would just listen to me and try it for one week, they could get down three chords in that week or two weeks and then be able to play a song with those chords.

I also teach them a strumming pattern to play the chords with. That is all you need and you are set with your new hobby of playing guitars. I myself studied music for seven years or more before I tried to learn the guitar, so I did have a good grasp of music theory, but it still took me several months to learn to play well, because I had to develop the motor skills of moving my fingers on the strings and coordinating my fingering and strumming patterns.

It also takes a little while to learn to sing on top of keeping the beat and playing the guitar. But it can be learned quickly as well, if you just stick with and give it a real try. I did not have anyone to teach me when I first began playing the guitar. I just bought an acoustic guitar and taught myself to play. Every now and then people would give me pointers or teach me how to play something. I have taught other people to play also, and noticed that with a teacher it is surprising how fast people can pick things up.

I wish I would have had a teacher when I was learning. There are little tricks and licks on the guitar that only an experienced guitar player would know. So if you are looking for a new hobby, one that you can do whenever you want, with friends or by yourself, then learn to play the guitar. It is like riding a bike. Once you learn it, you never forget. It will be something you can take with you for the rest of your life, entertaining crowds and parties and serenading that special someone. And, if you do not have a special someone, it will definitely help your chances of finding them.

How To Enjoy Arts And Crafts Hobbies Safely

John Myre Writing Speaking/non fiction 2007-01-18
View Detail

We turn to our hobbies to relax and to escape life's many stresses. Thus, it's ironic to learn that our source of comfort can also be a source of danger. Like many activities that are relaxing and therapeutic on the surface, arts and crafts carry their own dangers.

Too often, toxic materials are included in art supplies. For instance, a Canadian art student fell down a stairway after he accidentally inhaled vapors from a freshly opened bottle of turpentine.

Before You Start

* Read the label. Be sure it states conformity to ASTM D-4236, the labeling standard of ASTM International.

* If the label does not satisfy you, or if you intend to use a product in ways other than normal uses, contact the manufacturer for Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs).

* For information on specific products, contact Arts, Crafts and Theater Safety (ACTS) at (212) 777-0062, or their website.

* Do not use products past their expiration date.

* Use all protective equipment specified on the label. Use a mask or gloves that are impermeable to whatever product you are using. Protect cuts or open wounds from exposure.

* Install a ventilation system that removes old air and brings in new air. To test, blow soap bubbles. If they fall to the ground, the system isn't working.

* Be sure you have good lighting and comfortable seating. Keep a fire extinguisher on hand.

The Creative Process

* Do not eat, drink, smoke or apply cosmetics in your work area.

* Take breaks and stretches often.

* Never use products for skin painting or food preparation unless they are labeled for that use.

* Do not transfer art materials to other containers. You will lose valuable safety information listed on the product package.

* Wear a face mask and goggles when spraying paint or fixative. Do the spraying outdoors.

* When possible, use water based paints and inks, and products that don't create dust or mist.

* Hobbyists with allergies or who are pregnant should consult a doctor before engaging in projects.

* Do not keep art materials on your skin, even nontoxic materials.

* Toxic solvents such as turpentine and paint thinner should never be used to cleanse the skin. Use baby oil (mineral oil) followed by soap and water.

* When you clean, use a wet mop or sponge rather than a duster. Dusts can damage lungs.

* Find substitute art materials for those which might be hazardous. For example, water-based adhesives can be used instead of flammable rubber cement.

* Take extreme care when using materials not sold as art materials since they may not have been reviewed for safety. Get MSDSs.

* When they are not in use, keep all materials covered, stored in a safe place, and out of reach of children. Use unbreakable containers.

* Carefully follow suggested disposal methods.

* Do not store a flammable product near heat, sparks or flame. Also, do not heat above the temperature specified on the label.

* After finishing the project, wash yourself and the work surface, and clean your supplies. Leave your work clothes in the work area.

Junior Picassos

Kids love the arts, too. Unfortunately, that fun can be dampened if they come in contact with materials that are toxic and dangerous. (And don't be reluctant to ask the teacher if she is aware of these concerns.)

* Make certain the product is clearly marked for children.

* Use products that have no hazard statements and no precautionary statements for children grade six and under. The word "nontoxic" should be on the label, but follow the same hygiene practices you would if the product were toxic.

* Older children must be supervised when using products labeled with warnings.

* Get MSDSs if you intend to use a product in creative ways, e.g., melting crayons.

* Young children should use only water-based marking pens, not permanent markers.

* No product containing lead should be used by children.

* Teach children to use cutting tools safely, and to not place anything in their mouths.

Hobbies That Can Earn You Big Bucks

Business/Business 2008-05-04
View Detail
Enterprising moms start a home business to augment the take-home pay of their spouses. Luckily, some businesses prosper, while others fold up in no time. The secret of success? Nothing spectacular, just hard work and tight money management.

Make That Hobby Earn You Money

Mrs. A took up baking as a hobby and happily gifted neighbors and friends with her pies, cookies, cakes, and turnovers. She bought special boxes and artfully packaged her pies. Neighbors and friends started ordering her baked goods and she happily obliged. Smelling the potential of a good business, Mrs. A had her husband put a big colorful sign on their doorstep announcing that Mrs. A accepted orders for all occasions.

In the morning, after feeding her family breakfast, she started the baking for the day. Since all orders were picked up, she did not have to leave her small children alone. Customers were satisfied with the arrangement and her pies and cakes were always ready in their cute little boxes when the customers arrived.

Mrs. A counted her money and always reinvested half of the profits into her business. The other half was used for some important household expenses and some treats for the children. After a year, she had enough money to buy a bigger oven and more baking utensils. Two years later, she had a pastry shop in the neighborhood, but she kept to her habit of using only half of the profits.

If you have a passion for your hobby like Mrs. A, be it jewelry or fashion accessories, make a home business out of it. You can make environment-friendly jewelry from recycled scraps and paper. People are becoming conscious of the rape of the earth's natural resources and the staggering and ever-increasing amount of junk. Your eco-friendly and wearable art pieces will be the rave in town.

Managing A Home Business

Don't go rushing to get a loan when orders have reached the point where you need an assistant to help you out. Do things one at a time. Accept orders and finish them before the prearranged schedule for pick-up. Customer satisfaction is heightened when their orders are ready when they come knocking at your door.

Instead of advertising big time, just put up an outdoor signage advertising your product and ready some displays for viewing. If you're into baking, a picture of your baked creations can help.

Keep count of the money and organize your paper bills in magnetic money clips. Spend only if it is necessary for your business. It is useless to have a business and not spend a penny for its improvement and expansion. Rich businessmen who started from scratch swear that they didn't touch the money for personal purposes and they lived frugally on their budget.

Starting a business without loans can boost your savings and earnings. If you deem it necessary to get a loan for your business upgrades or expansion, shop for a good lender and don't put up your house as equity for the loan. Remember this is just a small business yet. Review your operational costs and find out ways where you can slash expenses.

As much as possible, be disciplined. Your business is only as good as your determination to succeed. So be wise and expect great rewards from your sacrifices.

Most of the people reading this would be at the brink of building up a great career ahead of them. The next few passages are bound to explain how to go about doing so. No, it is not about more courses and certificates but about introspection, realization and execution. A degree or diploma may entitle a person to look out for jobs offered by others. However, here we focus on empowering oneself to the level of providing jobs to others in the longer run. It is nothing but student entrepreneurship, the catching trend of the day. We at SIGI are broaching upon this concept only because we strongly believe in empowerment.
How entrepreneurship differs from student entrepreneurship:
The dictionary defines the term entrepreneur as a person who organizes a commercial undertaking especially involving risk. This definition may hold good for those who foray into making huge industries and walk on the tightrope of profit. The problem is, some of us don't realize the value of the hobbies we are creating. People flock to craft shows from all over just to see and purchase many of the †̃hobbies' that we have.

What a great thing to be paid for what you love to do!

Here are 5 popular hobbies that you can turn into craft show profits:

1.) Painting – People are often looking for interesting pieces of art to compliment the rooms in their home. It is not unusual for some art to go for $50, $75 or even $100 or more per piece!

2.) Woodworking – Woodworker create a variety of wonderful crafts – everything from furniture to birdhouses, and these have a wonderful value at craft shows. People usually believe that handmade crafts are much better quality than similar items that are made in a factory or other setting.

3.) Knitting – If you are a power knitter and you can pump out socks, hats, scarves and sweaters, people are willing to pay a fortune for these items. Crochet is very similar. If you can come up with enough pieces for a craft show, you might be able to turn a serious profit from your knitting.

4.) Photography – Very similar to the painting, people look for artistic images to compliment certain areas of their home. If you have an eye for wonderful photographic images, and you are handy with a camera, you can turn this popular pastime into a profitable craft show venture.
