10. Keep good diabetes control
- The best thing you can do to remain productive is to stay healthy. Don't let your diabetes get so far out of control that you're not able to work. If you're eating well, exercising, and controlling your blood sugars, you will have a productive work life.

The plight of the baby boomers begins. Americans are getting older and this means greater demands on the health care system. A new study by the U.S. Center for Disease Control showed that doctor and hospital visits are up 20% in the last five years, a trend likely to continue.

The study revealed that Americans paid 2.5 billion visits to health care providers in 2005. That's about 10 visits per person if you assume everyone in the country is making visits – which you know ain't true. That means somebody's going to the doctor a lot. And what are they walking away with? Antidepressants mostly – 118 million records of them, followed by heart meds and painkillers.

There's always a side-effect

Couple this data with another new study that suggests antidepressants are associated with loss of bone density in older adults and we are asking for problems. Evidence is emerging that the most common class of antidepressants may contribute to fragile bones in the elderly.

This class of drugs works by altering how your brain uses serotonin, a major mood-regulating hormone. But serotonin is used in many other parts of the body as well, including the digestive system, the cardiovascular system and bone metabolism – therefore, side effects. One of these side effects now appears to be decreasing bone density and increasing risk for osteoporosis or bone fracture.

It's never too late to start

However, amidst all of this doom and gloom there is light – if we decide to use it. Another study found that middle aged adults who adopt a healthy lifestyle can ‘catch up' to already healthy folks in an average of four years. Researchers found that adults who started eating five servings of fruits and veggies, getting 2.5 hours per week of exercise, maintaining their weight in a healthyish range and refrained from smoking, decreased their chance of heart disease and death to that of healthy people.

The downside is that most people decide not to take advantage of their ability to recover and choose to remain on the slippery slope. Out of the 16,000 Americans followed in the study, only 8.5% were already doing what's needed to maintain their health and another 8.4% picked up the habits with six years of the study's beginning. Those that did reaped the rewards of reduced heart attacks and morbidity. Those that didn't, well . . .

Find an accountability partner

It's not that we don't know what to do, it's just that we don't do it. I encourage everyone to find an accountability partner and set a realistic health goal. Find someone that you can be honest with and that will help keep you on course when you falter. We are all much more likely to stay on track when we know someone will be asking us about our efforts. Make a contract with someone else to get your daily doses of fruits and veggies, get your 30 minutes of daily exercise and move closer to healthy weight.

The problem is that it's no longer just about choosing to live healthy or not. The entire health care system is strained and on the verge of collapse. As the baby boomers move into their elder years it will be stressed even more. We must educate and motivate people into action, literally.

When John F. Kennedy said "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country" he probably wasn't thinking about taking a walk around the block. But now, more than 45 years after that famous speech, getting healthy is one of the greatest things you can do for yourself and your country.

HEALTH CHOICES

Many of us hear about eating healthy but the majority of us, probably don't understand healthy or what should be considered eating healthy and healthy choices. As we jump into life as a provider for our families. We sort of get away from the health information we learned in our high school health classes or along the way of growing up. We can forget some of the taught healthy choices, until it's mentioned somewhere and then we are telling ourselves, oh yea. Our lives become occupied and preoccupied with providing the most productive living for our families, then maintaining quality family relationship can consume the rest of or time. If the major member/members of the household, that has assumed the majority of the responsibility of preparing food, aren't the least slightly health conscience. You can't expand the fullest productivity of your family without some type of healthy eating habit.

Essential nutrients is major in maintaining productive thinking, working, studying and many other important life activities depending upon physical energy for production.

We should get back to the perspective of eating to replenish our energy and productivity throughout our lives and have an awareness of eating healthier. We are driven by what is quick or what taste good instead of what's going to give us our greatest nutritional essentials.

Eating foods that will provide essential nutrients enhances the productivity of our lives and helps to maintain buoyant health. It goes without saying getting more productivity out of our body and out of ourselves, helps us as a provider and homemaker of the house. It affects us financially long or short term not being able to get the most out of our bodies. Providing financially can depend greatly on getting more out of ourselves and out of our day.

A household should have at least the most basic promotion and assimilation of good nutrition. It is as essential as providing for the family and many of us, at broad, have gotten away from these important aspects of life.

Athletes aren't the only ones that need to look after their health and watch what to eat and what we're not eating. We must project what not to overindulge in, for our own sakes and those we love.

If you can't remember the last time you ate any type of vegetable. You are probably well overdue for some very essential nutrients for your body. Vegetables are actually recommended in an everyday eating plan of any culture or home. You should always make an asserted daily effort to provide your body with 1 or 2 types of the various types of available vegetables.

Broccoli provides a number of elements that can cover many of the nutritional necessities. It is said that broccoli is very rich in calcium.

Fruit is another major nutritional sources for your body. Try to provide various sources of fruits to your daily plans of eating.

We usually forget that cereals can be a major provider of essential nutrients in eating healthy. We should never forget to maintain a habit of eating cereals, everyday if possible.

Although rice is considered a cereal and is widely used throughout the diets of the world. The majority of rice is milled white and striped of much of it's vitamins and minerals.

When I mention cereals, I'm mainly referring to wheat, oat and the majority of healthy breakfast cereals.

I learned awhile back that cereal provides a source which is converted by the body into a serotonin which usually stimulates sleeping in the body. I began to eat cereal at night to try to help me get to sleep. It may not work for everybody, but I can say it really works for me, and I can tell the difference.

You can never forget to provide a major source of fish to the eating plans of the household. Salmon is one of the most healthy forms of fish you can provide to your body. It is said, however, to watch for differences salmon that are raised from fish farms as opposed to fresh water.. Make sure you find out if it's fresh, ocean and naturally derived source of salmon.

Our eating habits and influence can greatly affect our children in the household as well. Deficiencies of nutrients and bad eating habits trickle down to our children greatly affecting there development in life. The main concern today is excessive nutrition consumption setting the stage for obesity later.

In all eating efforts should also be accompanied by exercise and/or consistent physical activity. Be sure there is a conscious effort to do something outdoors that will provide adequate physical activity. If not everyday at least once a week, possibly the weekend. This increase the metabolism of the body and helps compensate for a large percentage of excess nutrients of the body.

Play a fun game in the backyard or take a productive walk.

One can be deficient in energy, not eating right and not maintaining a healthy diet. One should at least provide a healthy meal once a day if not any, you owe it to yourself. Once a month is at least better than nothing, but habitual and diurnal health consequences and health plan is the best recommendation.

The three basic tools for completing a physical examination are medical history, hands-on examination, and diagnostic/laboratory tests.

A medical history is the most important part of the physical examination, especially during the first visit with your physician. It includes a history of habits, lifestyle, family history, and symptoms. Many physicians use health-risk appraisals, detailed questionnaires that provide information about health habits.

This is one area of the physical examination for which a patient can prepare. By following the guidelines for communicating with your physician presented earlier in this chapter, you can help your physician obtain an accurate health profile. This is important because a diagnosis can usually be made with only a thorough history and hands-on examination.

The hands-on examination is the second part of the physical examination. It consists of an examination by touching, looking, and listening.

Physicians can feel or palpate for enlarged glands, growths, and tumors with procedures, such as the breast examination, pelvic examination, rectal examination, and hernia examination. Thumping the back and chest lets the physician know whether any fluid has built up in or around the lungs. Tapping a knee for reflexes may reveal nervous system damage. A stethoscope is the physician's basic listening device and is used to listen to the heart, lungs, abdomen, and glands located near the surface of the skin. Possible problems that can be detected with the stethoscope range from a heart murmur to such conditions as poor circulation, lung infection, intestinal blockage, and an overactive thyroid gland.

Physicians have access to a number of instruments to visually inspect for problems. An ophthalmoscope is used to view the brain by looking into the eye. The first sign of some brain diseases is an unhealthy looking optic nerve. Leakage in the blood vessels of the eye may be a sign of diabetes or hypertension. An otoscope is used to inspect the ear, particularly the tympanic membrane. The proctoscope and sigmoidoscope are used to examine the rectum and colon. The laryngoscope and bronchoscope provide a look at the larynx and bronchial tubes.

The last part of the physical examination includes diagnostic laboratory tests, which may vary from a simple urinalysis to invasive dye tests. The effectiveness of these tests receives mixed reviews. Tests conducted for specific symptoms may be invaluable in pinpointing disabling conditions. They may be just as valuable for what they do not reveal as they are for what they do reveal. This can be reassuring to the patient and physician.

On the negative side, many physicians rely too heavily on laboratory tests. Patients often demand or acquiesce to more tests than necessary, sometimes more than is good for them. Ten years ago, one fourth of all medical tests contributed little to health. For example, when researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, studied 2000 patients hospitalized for surgery, they found that 60% of the blood tests routinely ordered were unnecessary. Only 1 in about 450 revealed abnormalities, and they were ignored because they were either not noticed or dismissed as not significant. The researchers concluded that if a thorough history turns up no hint of a medical problem, routine testing is a waste.

Many times tests are recommended more for the purpose of protecting the doctor against medical malpractice suits, rather than for their diagnostic value. This practice, which is called defensive medicine, paints a sobering picture of the difficulty in making medical decisions for doctors and patients alike. A doctor may know with 99% certainty a particular diagnosis but order a test or procedure any way as protection against liability should he or she be sued later. Malpractice suits are a reality; they have increased 300% in the past 30 years. Almost two thirds of physicians say that the threat of liability influences them to order extra tests. 28 Of course, patients always have the right to decline a prescribed test. It should be a two-way decision between patient and doctor that is based on its potential for an effective medical intervention.

Massage also encourages increased blood flow to the fingers and toes. To massage your nails, reach for some heavy hand cream, massage oil, baby oil, or even olive oil. Place a drop or two of the product at the base of the nail, and rub it into the cuticle, up the nail folds, and onto the nail plate itself. Nail massage has a secondary benefit: the massage lotion or oil moisturizes the nails, cuticles, and surrounding skin so that nails stay strong and flexible enough to fend off breaks and the surrounding skin remains supple and hangnail-free.

The importance of gloves

No one I know wears gloves while cleaning or gardening. I don't know why this is, although I suspect it may be a generation thing. My reasoning? My grandmother and her friends were harder on their hands than our generation is on ours: those ladies pulled weeds, harvested vegetables, picked apples, pitted cherries, peeled peaches for preserves, made minor repairs around the house, did hand laundry, washed dishes without the aid of a machine, " and scrubbed floors. Yet, unlike me and my friends, those ladies never got professional manicures. Also unlike me and many of my friends, those ladies had strong, healthy nails.

So what was their secret? Many dermatologists and nail technicians point to the gloves that the older generation wore. Gloves provide a barrier that protects nail keratin from the weakening affects of water; collisions with hard surfaces; corrosive household chemicals; and more. Fortunately, glove-wearing has nothing to do with your generation and everything to do with habit. To develop the glove-wearing habit yourself, get several pairs for dishwashing and indoor cleaning, and a pair or two for gardening - then wear them!
