The dictionary defines the word fate as, "The supposed force, principle, or power that predetermines events," and "the inevitable events predestined by this force." It also says, "An event (or a course of events) that will inevitably happen in the future: the ultimate agency that predetermines the course of events." There are many phrases that talk about fate, like, "Don't tempt fate," or, "That was a twist of fate," or, "She deserves a better fate," or, "That will certainly seal his fate." In Greek mythology, "The Fates" were three goddesses who controlled human destiny! I say, "No thank you!" Fate is also described and referred to in other ways, like, "Well that was just meant to be", meaning that it was going to happen and that it was supposed to happen, and so that's why it happened. If you follow that logic you end up with the conclusion that whatever happens was meant to happen. But doesn't that take away all personal responsibility for your actions? Yes it does, and that's the point. Suppose I decide to have a sandwich for lunch. Is that fate? Was it meant to be? As I eat that sandwich, am I to think that eating this sandwich right now is what was supposed to have happened? Some would say, "Yes." But what if I took the bread out to make the sandwich, and then stopped and said, "Wait a minute - I think I'll have a salad instead." But the bread is already out and sitting there! Wasn't I meant to have a sandwich? Which one was meant to be, the sandwich or the salad? There are some who would say that I was meant to get the bread out first, and then I was meant to change and go with the salad. For those who think like that, everything is just meant to be. The problem with that kind of thinking and rationale is that it eliminates free will. It also eliminates any and all responsibility for your actions. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. No one is destined to be successful or destined to be a failure. Far too many people accept that their lives are dictated by fate. They say things like, "This is my lot in life; these are the cards that I've been dealt; I'm just a victim of circumstances and fate; this is all I can really expect in life." To all of that I say, "No, no, no!" How can a child of the Creator of the universe go through life accepting things as they are, thinking that he cannot change them and just accepting that this is the way things are supposed to be? Have you ever considered that if your "fate is sealed," you have no free will?! If you have no free will then it really doesn't matter what you do, good or bad, because it is not your fault. It's what was supposed to have happened. Are we all just robots? The Creator gave each and every one of us free will to choose. Each one of us can decide what we want to believe and what we want to do. And, with His help, there's really no limit to what we can accomplish. If anything is really "meant to be," it is that God wants us successful and blessed with the life that we have to live. He has lovingly provided all that we need. But, he also gave us free will to choose. If we want to, we can accept "fate," or, we can choose to believe to have a great life. You are in life today where you are because of what you have believed and accepted as true. You can change your circumstances by changing your thinking. You can choose to focus on the things that you do desire instead of settling for the way things are now. The only other choice is to accept fate. If you accept fate, well then, good luck. You'll need it!

Generally, in cases of palmistry, the questions asked are based on the following features: 1.Shape of Hand 2.Shape of Fingers 3.Shape of Nails 4.Life Line 5.Head Line 6.Heart Line 7.Fate Line 8.Fame Line. These features represent the following: Shape of Hand - Significance: The shape of the hand and the fingers relates to hereditary influence of character and the disposition. There are certain types of hands which are also suited for one work more than any other. Shape of Finger - Significance: Your talents and qualities are well understood from the finger shapes. Shape of Nails - Significance: Want to know more about your general disposition and other hereditary traits, look out for your nail shapes. Life Line Vigor and length of your life are represented by your Life Line. It predicts your illness, death and many other important features that may affect you in your life. Location: The Life Line starts from the side of palm between the thumb and the index finger and extends across the middle of the palm towards the base of the hand. Head Line The mentality of a person is generally indicated by the Head Line. The intellectual strength or weakness related to talent is signified by this line. Location: The Head Line rises from just above the Life Line and extends across the hand. Heart Line Love and attraction of the sexes are indicated by your Heart Line. It reflects your humane and loving nature. Location: The Heart Line rises from the upper portion of the hand, just below the mounts of Jupiter, Saturn, the Sun and Mercury (from base of index finger to base of little finger). Fate Line The Line of Fate or Destiny is the center upright line on the palm of the hand. All worldly affairs, result of your career, people who influence you, and ultimately the successes or failures is indicated by this line. It is prominently marked on conic and psychic hands, as they are firm believers in fate. Location: The Fate Line starts in the middle of the palm and continues towards the base of the middle finger. Fame Line Also known as the line of Apollo, the line of brilliancy or the line of success is the Fame Line. It is heavily marked on conic, spatulate and philosophic hands. Location: Running parallel to the Line of Fate is the Fame Line which starts from the base of hand and runs towards ring finger. Success is enhanced by this line as indicated by the line of Fate and also gives fame and distinction to our lives. Appreciation of art is also the indication of this line. The palmist's use of his or her intuition becomes more and more easy as he or she becomes more experienced. In time, the palmist is able, almost without conscious thought, to decide which indicators must be taken with great seriousness and which can be virtually disregarded.

Within the last couple of centuries, seeing the growing popularity of playing lotteries, it has been finally legalized and implemented in pretty much in every country in the world. Lottery is not a modern sport but has been sported for a long time back. The history of playing lottery is mentioned in the Bible. Even Caesar himself is known to have boosted lottery games in Rome to help pay for repair work that needed to be done in the city. There are some other important historic events that stand as a witness for lottery being played during that time. For instance Great Wall of China was paid for by the proceeds of lottery games. Several other events like in 1420 people of the French town of L’Ecluse raised money using a public lottery with a purpose to increase the town’s defenses and in the year 1466 officials in Belgium city of Bruges hold a lottery to raise money for the poor and needy. Thought to be originated from the Italian word ‘lotto’, which simply means “fate” lottery kept gaining momentum every passing year. Today the national lottery is the largest lottery in the United Kingdom since its launch in 1994. Initially regulated by the Office of The National Lottery, national lottery was eventually handed over to the National Lottery Commission - which is a non-departmental public body. Nearly more than half the populations of UK are found to be playing national lottery on a regular basis. And it is very nice to know that around 28% of the lottery revenue is used for good causes across the country. To play lottery it is important that you have to show age poof certificate and you are eligible only if you are above 18 years. You need to fill a play slip, containing number of boxes termed as “boards," using pencil or blue/black ink. Put a bold mark on any six number boxes and in case you make any mistake then put a mark on the void box and then hand over the ticket to the terminal. The winning prize amount is paid as lump sum amount which is completely tax free. The prized should be claimed within 180 days after the draw otherwise the prize amount is given out through the good cause's fund after the lapse of the specific period of declaration. Playing national lottery will not only carry out the submissive hopes of its players in making huge revenue based on luck but also play a big purpose in articulating the funds and charities towards the social development of the nation.

There are many forms of accident that can result in death. Vehicular death has been portrayed in folk songs on more than one occasion. "The Drunken Driver" tells the story of two small children who were killed as they walked along a state highway. One of the deceased children turns out to be the drunken driver's son. "The Fatal Wreck of Bus" is the true tale of mass death when a bus goes over a cliff. Last week, both my son and I had just left the house to go to a store so he could pick up the "Transformers" movie that had just been released. He always has to have the latest damned movies that come out for whatever reason that may be. Unbeknownst to us until an hour later, three people were killed in less than 15 minutes from where we had just driven.....approx. 5 minutes from my house to be exact! On our way home, I could not for the life of me figure out why there was a sudden back up of traffic. The road we go down to get to my home is never that full of traffic. After all, I live in the ouskirts of town, not downtown and NOT in a large city. We heard over head helicopters and my son said they were television news copters. Oh great! An accident! I'm less than 2 miles from my house and CAN'T get there because of a car accident. We could not get close enough to find out what was going on. After realizing the traffic jam was going to be for HOURS, my son had a revelation that he knew a back way home. Okay....I turned around and back tracked. His "short cut" to our home took me nearly 45 minutes out of my way because we had to go back and around through a very winding, country road that scared the crap out of me for more reasons than one! While some people would take in the beauty of such a road, I on the other hand have visions of "Michael" from Halloween awaiting darkness to fall and for my car to run out of gas so he can Knife me to my horror! I panic! My car was low on gas...it was getting dark and I was on some damned country winding road I had never been on before and my son is suddenly telling me he FORGOT which road we were suppose to take to get us the back way to my house! Oh MY GOD! My mind is playing reruns of horror flicks....you know the ones! I don't even have to mention them....Texas Chainsaw massacre....Halloween.....yeah...all of them! My son is laughing because I'm freaking out saying how he knew I hated roads like this and how I absolutely hate being out on such roads when its getting dark especially when I don't have a full tank of gas to even begin getting lost. (I hear your laughter so calm down people! I can't handle horror movies at all nor do I watch them!) Well, 45 minutes later my son figures out what road we were suppose to turn on and we finally make it back home. I was sooo upset that I couldn't even breathe a sigh of relief of finally making it back home. My son still laughing was like "See? What are you freaking out about? I told you I knew the backway home!" Oh man.....you deserve a punch in the face kid! (he's an adult so don't go calling social services just yet!) When I get inside, I immediately turn on the tv so that I can see why the hell I nearly had a panic attack and having to possibly meet my death through an ax weilding killer...perhaps an escape convict just waiting for a woman and her son to be sitting in the dark, out of gas on the side of a long, country winding road...I don't know....I said my mind fills with horrific fantasies when I panic..... Unfortunately three people were killed just 2 miles from my house. One man, who lives not far from me died when 3 men in a pick up truck from Tennessee swerved straight into him and hit his truck head on. There was only 1 survivor in the truck carrying three men from out of state. Wow! It made me sad to think that all of these men got up that morning....had their usual day planned out...since it was later in the afternoon, they had spent all day doing whatever it was they were doing and then suddenly, now they are dead. Poof! Their life taken just in a blink of an eye. It really hit home with me too because we had just driven in the same direction just 15 minutes BEFORE the accident, on the very same road. Then it made me wonder about death in general. How it is we come to no longer exist and how it is we suddenly find our fate on the same trail as someone else. None of these men knew each other and yet, fate brought them together at that very point in time to exist no more. Heavy! I had a revelation about that accident and that was that as people in general, we should appreciate each and every day that we have because we never know from the moment we get up out of bed what fate has planned for us. A simple trip to the store could be deadly. This man who died and who lived not too far from me, was just coming home from work. I read the next day in the newspaper (it was the biggest thing that had happened here in a long time) that his friends actually saw the accident on the news and immediately got into their trucks and tried to get to him at the accident site. Police held them at bay. He was airlifted to the hospital but died on the way. I am sure, like each and every day, his wife was waiting for him to get home from work and more than likely had supper on the table waiting for him. Many people here in our area are country folk who still have traditional values. So many people around here own cattle and farms in our area. This gentleman was a plumber and was coming home from from a hard days work. I am sure the men from Tennessee were heading toward the interstate that would carry them to I-40 that would take them back home if they were just visiting. Who knows what their travels were. But as I said, the accident left me with things to consider where death is concerned. Life is very short and we never know when our day will be the last. We should always appreciate those around us and always be thankful for the things that we have. Stop taking life so damned serious! Accidents, or unintentional injuries, accounted for 106,742 deaths in 2002, more than HIV, assault, and suicide combined. Motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) are responsible for nearly half of all types of accidental deaths, far outweighing all other causes. This year multiple new traffic safety laws have been implemented to help lower the amount of deaths caused by MVAs, which in 2002 resulted in 43,354 deaths. Some laws are aimed at limiting in-car distractions, such as the use of television or video screens that are in the driver's line of vision, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles. Even still, I am confused as to what made the truck who was traveling on a highway going in the opposite direction to swerve into the man who lived not far from me. Did he take his eyes off of the road for a few minutes? Was he looking for a cell phone? Trying to dial on a cell phone? Chatting with his son who was sitting behind his seat and who was the only survivor in the accident? We'll never know what caused the accident but one thing is for sure......we all need to appreciate each day that we are given. Each and every day is precious.

Do you believe in luck or in fate? I believe in opportunities coming my way. I believe in God bringing people and situations into my life because I have prayed and am expecting those kinds of things to happen on a regular basis. But do I believe in luck and fate? No. You hear people say, "Boy, look what happened to him, he sure is lucky." They think that if they were "that lucky" then good things would happen to them too. So, then the reason that good things don't come their way is simple. They're just not lucky. Isn't that a lousy rationalization? Not to mention, it takes no responsibility for your life! Other times you hear things like, "That was really wonderful what happened to her; I'm sure that it was just meant to be. It's fate, you know." But that is the same rationale all over again using different words! So, people conclude that reason things aren't going well for them is because they just weren't meant to be. It's fate. But what about accountability and responsibility for ones own life? Surprisingly, many people see being successful as a matter of luck and fate. And that of course takes away any accountability and responsibility. Others even put the blame on God by saying, "Well if God wants me to be successful then He will make it happen for me." So the reason they're not successful is because God doesn't want them to be? That contradicts scores of His promises clearly recorded in the Bible. I do believe in God helping because He promised He would. He promised He would answer prayers, and He promised He would help. So, the question is not, "Will He?" but rather, "Are you ready?" Now that may sound silly. But, many people miss opportunities that are almost literally dropped in their lap. Why? They miss them because they are not ready. Instead of anticipating, expecting, looking forward to something, knowing that there is something coming, they just accept and settle for the way things are right now. As they go through each day, their attitude is simply trying to get through another one so that they can go home and relax. That's not living, that is just existing! Very few people prepare themselves for something bigger. Their focus stays on the daily grind and all their problems, but never on the possibilities. They won't read books, they won't investigate new ideas, and they won't talk to other people. They just stay in their little world. And sad, but true, many, many opportunities pass right by them. I wrote an article over a year ago entitled, "Fate." In it, I said the following: "The Creator gave each and every one of us free will to choose. Each one of us can decide what we want to believe and what we want to do. And, with His help, there's really no limit to what we can accomplish." If anything is really "meant to be," it is that God wants us successful and blessed with the life that we want to live. He has lovingly provided all that we need. But, He also gave us free will to choose. If we want to, we can accept "fate," or, we can choose to make our own life the way we want it to be by believing His promises and acting on them. You are in life today where you are because of what you have believed and accepted as true. You can change your circumstances by changing your thinking. You can choose to focus on the things that you desire instead of settling for the way things are now. The only other choice is to accept fate. If you accept fate, well then, good luck. You'll need it! Instead of buying into the whole "luck and fate" fiasco, why not expect good solid opportunities to come your way? Believe and trust God to bring people and situations into your life because you pray and because you are expecting those kinds of things to happen to you on a regular basis. Throw luck and fate out the window. Take responsibility for your life and expect great things from God!

Closing your eyes, you reach down and spin the little booklet around on the table before you, taking care not to tear it; the paper won't take rough handling. Finally stopping, you straighten it out before you. Stretching out your right arm, and letting your wrist hang loose, you point downward with your index finger, curling your other fingers back out of the way. Finally, eyes still closed, your lower your stiffened arm till your finger touches the paper; and opening your eyes you look at the small chart of jumbled numbers to see what you've chosen. ===> History of the Tablets The "Tablets of Fate" are an oracle first produced as chap-books in the late 17th century. Chap-books were among the first examples of printed works for the common people. Made up in large quantities and printed on the cheapest grade of rag paper, these little 4 x 6 inch pamphlets were the dime novels of their day. They were sold in shops and stalls in the city markets, and then bought and resold by peddlers to the villages and hamlets of Europe. These peddlers would carry small cheap goods they could buy and resell from their packs as they traveled. In the vernacular of the day they were called chap-men, buyers and sellers of cheapened goods. Hence, the booklets they sold acquired the name chap-books. The thing to remember is that the "Tablets of Fate" were among the first writings commonly available. Wither they are a true oracle, or just a parlor game, their history is as old as playing cards. ===> Methodology The idea behind the oracle is simple. Each "Tablet" represents a different category of questions that will fall into a common group of answers. A tablet is created, consisting of 16 numbers jumbled in an odd arrangement in roughly equal areas of the page. They can be in a square (Tablet of Venus), a circle (Tablet of the Moon), or a diamond shape (Tablet of Jupiter) so long as the area that encloses each number is roughly equal on the page. Then a table of Responses is prepared covering a range of possible answers. The "Tablets of Fate" call for 32 responses, 16 numbers with both an upright and a reversed meaning. You would seek your answer by placing the chart with the "Tablet" in front of you and turning it randomly to set it's direction, upright or reversed. Then you'd use your finger, a small stick, or a pencil held in your hand to randomly pick your answer. ===> Known Tablets of Fate The following Tablets can be found in several sources under different names. Tablet of the Sphinx == Usually consulted first to determine if the time is right to ask your question. If you receive a favorable answer in the Tablet of the Sphinx, you would go on to the next tablet. Tablet of the Moon (Spell of the New Moon) == The Moon guards the Home; use it ask about issues concerning home, relatives, and friends. Tablet of Mercury (The Magnetic Horseshoe) == Mercury is Lord of the Crossroads; use this tablet for issues concerning journeys and travels. Tablet of Venus (Cupid's Scroll) == Venus is the goddess of Love, use it for issues of the heart. Tablet of Mars (The Symbolic Swastika) == use this table when your question concerns Work, Business, or Money. ** (The Lucky Bell) == Used for issues concerning a Letter (or in modern terms an email) Tablet of the Sun (Spell of the Rising Sun) == Used when the issue concerns Time. ** (The Seal of Solomon) == Issues concerning a Large Building (Temple, Office Building, Hospital, etc.) or someone connected to such a place. Tablet of Jupiter (The Scales of Fate) == Used when your issues concern Justice, worries, doubts, or problems with the Law. ===> Modern Printings of the Oracle The most complete version of the "Tablets of Fate" that I've found were printed in "The Complete Fortune Teller" by Diana Hawthorne (Blue Ribbon Books, Inc., New York, 1940), and in an English printing of the same book "Laurie's Complete Fortune Teller" by Diana Hawthorn (W and G Foyle, Ltd, London. 1946). A copy of the English edition was recently put up for sale on E-bay and still shows up in the search engines. These are obviously out of print at this time. A more modern version can be found in (2) books: "Little Giant Encyclopedia of Lucky Numbers" by The Diagram Group (Sterling Publishing 2001), and "Little Giant Encyclopedia of Fortune Telling" by The Diagram Group (Sterling Publishing 1999). These are both still in print, and can be found in your local bookstore. Sadly, two of the "Tablets of Fate" were dropped from the recent Sterling Publishing printings. You can also find a Web page calculator with all of the "Tablets" from the 1940 edition with a little bit of searching. I highly recommend the experience; it sure beats using a magic 8-ball.

Whenever adapting material from one medium to another, there is always the danger of losing something in the adaptation. This usually happens if the original material was in the literary form, such as a novel or a comic book. Another cause might be the additional stress and anxiety on the director of the adaptation because the original material most likely had a sizable fan-base, which is liable to riot if anything too drastic occurs during the change. More often than not, the core strategy for dealing with this sort of problem is to remove what could be considered “filler” material, leaving only what needs to be present for integrity of the plot. Tolkien's “Lord of the Rings” series and several Japan-to-Hollywood conversions, such as “Godzilla” and “Ultraman” are victims of this. However, judging from the stress of the animators and the backlash from the hardcore fans, even the Japan-exclusive game genre known as the visual novel is hard to translate. Take, for example, “Fate/Stay Night,” based on the visual novel of the same name. TYPE-MOON, the company that made the source material, upheld their reputation for heavily detailed, highly artistic characters and plots in “Fate/Stay Night,” which was among the most awaited games for its genre in decades. The game itself had multiple endings, carried out through three possible scenarios, each one with a plot that develops in distinctly different ways from the others, albeit having roughly the same major players in the cast. The success of the game and the relatively warm reception to the adaptation of a previous TYPE-MOON work, “Tsukihime,” exerted enough pressure and stress on companies to grab the rights for an anime version of F/SN. The finished product, however, wavers. It is difficult to judge just how well the extensive material covered by the original visual novel translates to animated form. The core of the plot is intact, if only because the anime takes only one of the possible scenarios and runs with it, only inserting elements from the two other scenarios (such as hints of one of the character's fractured mental health) of the visual novel in certain episodes. The self-doubt and the skirting with depression that comes with the main character's personal burdens failures are apparent, but the show tended to skim over the background details of the other pieces to the puzzle. For example, the real nature of the relationship between Rin and Sakura (two of the female leads) is only hinted upon vaguely in the show, whereas the original material goes into extensive detail not only on their shared background as sisters, but also on Sakura's depression and feelings of abandonment by her original family. The show also drops several important elements to the personalities and relationships between Sakura, her brother Shinji, and the creature known as “Rider.” The show does, however, have some good points. The plot is coherent and strong, owing largely to the quality of work that went into the original plot by TYPE-MOON. The characters that are focused on have some of the most developed personalities seen in this sort of anime, which match perfectly with the top-notch visual quality of the show. Several of the scenes echo some of the more beloved scenes from the visual novel, though some had to be edited due to the nature of their content. Ultimately, “Fate/Stay Night” is an example of both what can be done right and wrong about translating stories from one medium to another. Due to the extensive and expansive written material present in the original game, as well as the vast number of possible decisions a player can make that have an effect on the outcome, it would be impossible to get everything to fit into the context of a 24-episode show. However, like good adaptations, enough elements from the source material were retained to make it both recognizable by fans and interesting enough to attract non-fans.

Have you noticed that people seem to be broke for generations? Grandparents bring up their children to have certain out look on money, and they in tern pass on the same ideas to their children and so on and so forth. The same seems to be happening with people who do extremely well with money. They stay wealthy for generations. Why is that? What is that factor that keeps us poor or wealthy? Can we influence or change it? I believe that the answer is yes. Not only we can change our money fate, but we can also change it for our children and their children. Imagine a following situation. You grow up poor, but something changes and in the midst of your life and you become very wealthy. Knowing your past, you treat that money with great respect and teach your children to do the same. That legacy stays with your family for generations. The question remains - what do we have to change in order for us to change our money "fate"? One of the biggest things we are going to have to change about our selves is how we view money. If our attitude about money is negative (i.e. we look at it as a "necessary evil", something that is against our nature but a must if we want to survive in this life) what do you think are chances of you being fantastically wealthy? This kind of attitude will give us exactly what we deserve - we will be able to survive on a bare minimum all our life. As a matter a fact how you view money will in large dictate you financial situation, giving you a sort of a blueprint your life follows, financially speaking. For example an attitude of lack (a constant financial shortcoming) will effectively keep you struggling for as long as you think of it as a reality. In fact it is a self fulfilling prophecy. Because you think that money is a struggle, it de-motivates you not to try to bring your self to find ways to improve your situation. So the first step is to change your attitude about finances - learn to respect and honor money. Next we must learn how to make more of it. The truth is that there is no magic that will give us the riches we desire. Short of winning the lottery, our chances of all of a suddenly becoming wealthy are very slim. So in order to realistically improve our money situation we must first learn about making money from someone who's done it. After all it is only logical that we go to school in order to learn a profession, why wouldn't we do the same to learn how to make money. There are plenty of ways to help you become wealthy - be it starting your own business or learning how to invest. All of these wealth generating methods have a steep learning curve and aren't easy to master. As a matter a fact you will probably fail the first three or four times. However with perseverance you will be successful. The only way you can really fail at it, is if you will stop trying. Next step should in my opinion be combined with previous. Money management will be a key to your long term success. Have you heard of lottery winners who after winning millions, go broke within a few years? The only reason that happens is lack of money management knowledge. So in order for you to be able to keep your new found fortune, you must learn how to manage you money. These tips might seem very common sense to you, and they are. The important thing is that they work. There are countless examples of people going from rags to riches. Every single one of those people followed some version of a plan I described above.

As dawn broke this morning I was on a hill top, looking out across Somerset, to lights that twinkled as far away as Devon and out on the coast of Wales. Behind me were the ruins of an old settlement and I was alone, but for a few birds cruising on the wind. As I watched the birds being carried on the wind, I noticed how flexible they were and how they adapted to the thermals and the gusts that blew with force. As I headed home for breakfast with the family, I was thinking about how the wind and birds. I likening it to how we use the winds of fate - do we fly into the wind, or do we use it to our advantage? If you've ever walked into a howling, gusty gale you'll know how it takes your breath away and how sometime it can be hard to put one foot in front of the other. And if you've ever turned around and allowed the wind to blow you, you'll know how much it can push you along. Life can be like this sometimes. I was watching two young people argue a while ago. As an adult sometimes we might feel the impulse to mediate, but more often than not I'm choosing not to do that. These days, more and more, I'm sitting back, detaching and suspending any judgments about the rights and wrongs of their dispute. These children were interesting to watch, especially when one of them had the wisdom to notice that he couldn't fly in the face of the prevailing wind and ended the dispute. "So!", he said flexing an outstretched tongue. With that he jumped up, did a very strange running on the spot kind of jig and walked away from the table as though a wind was blowing at his back. As he walked away I closed my eyes and sent a wish to him that as he grew up he would have the wisdom to know arguments can never be won. As I looked at the other young man, I could tell he was still fuming. His brow was furrowed, his jaw locked and his body stiff. I hoped he would feel the storm in his body, not like it, and notice how unhappy rigid arguing made him feel. The winds that we face in life don't always seem fair. But we can choose to accept that this is the way things are. We can turn ourselves so the wind is behind us, or choose to flap and fight against it. One gives us energy and support, the other will leave us feeling exhausted and frustrated. But please understand I'm not advocating a "whatever will be will be" attitude that just shrugs and says "Oh well" to everything. What I'm suggesting we do is look at the situation. Ask how we can use what is happening to better our understanding of life and the way things work. For example, if you have a an injury - say a back pain - ask how can you use it to understand life better. When I had back ache I learned to accept that am not as independent as I might like to think I am. I had no option but to learn to allow other people to help. I learnt about allowing support and kindness. I learnt about working with my body, having greater respect for it and supporting myself in a kinder more caring manner. The key to being carried by the winds of fate and resolving life in a way we are truly happy with are not complicated. It starts by opening up our awareness to what is happening. Are the finances awful? Are we struggling to get life together? Are we struggling with weight and health? Do you feel that a little more confidence would help you go a long way? If the answer to any of these is yes, then don't wait another moment! Last year I help people resolve their debts and move forward. I helped several people find happy relationships and helped others improve an unhappy one too. Several of my clients also had break through's with food and health issues and one of the biggest pluses my clients gained was confidence. Turn yourself on to life now With love and good wishes Neil

One of the most commonly asked questions, What is Love? What is its exact definition? Well, there can never be a definite answer. Everyone got his or her own answer to it. To some it can be really simple while to others, it can get really complicated. But one definite thing that is for sure, everybody needs love. It is a basic human need; we are not born into this world to be alone. It has always been our natural instinct as human to reach out to people, to be with and accepted by others. Consciously or subconsciously, everyone is searching and waiting for that special someone to appear in his or her life. But where and when will this special someone appear? For all you may know, he or she could be just nearby or even just beside you. It all depends on fate a lot would say. Fate? Well fate is again, something that cannot be explained, something that is always so amazing. Think about it. Among the millions and millions of people who could be out there, why is it that you had somehow met your friends to later become the best of friends? Got retrenched, feeling so terrible and disappointed but to later find your love among your new colleagues in your new job? Life has just suddenly become so beautiful? Well, this is indeed a very true encounter of a friend of mine. Hmm... thinking about it, isn’t there also kind of a fate between you and me that you are actually reading this article right now? Everything is like all so miraculously arranged, having a reason behind every event that happened. Do you believe in fate? Personally I definitely do. But again, are we really going to be just sitting around doing nothing, waiting for fate to just come by? Well, I wouldn’t think so. If you are not going to help yourself, who is going to? Fate has always been around us. As long as we are in places where there are people, presence it may be. Many at times, it had actually been there but somehow we just didn’t realized and cherished it when it was there. Sad to know of it, isn’t it so? Well, sometimes we were just too obsessed with our works, dreams and nevertheless too high an expectation that we missed to see it, to cherish that someone who was all along just beside us. It is only too late to realize it now, an opportunity won’t drop by twice. Your happiness lies in your own hand, don’t live your life a regret. I am sure you wanna have a life that is so full of fond memories than with tons of regrets, don’t you? Think about it. Let us just open up ourselves shall we? Every day is a beautiful day, stop burying yourself with that tons of endless work. Make time for yourself, reach out, make more friends, make new friends, widen up your social circle, live a balanced healthy social life. Make life enjoyable; you will see things in a more different way. You might be going, “Hmm... why is it that all this while, I have never noticed that she is actually such a pretty girl.” Well, in fact this is how true love comes about. It doesn’t always have to be a love at first sight, to be attracted to his or her physical look. Sometimes it is through an initial friendship, enjoying the companion of one another that a long time, you discover the beauty of his or her inner human qualities, unknowingly falling in love with the person. Wouldn’t this be a more beautiful and meaningful love than to a love at first sight? Remember, love has always been a game ever awaiting your participation. Just as in life, it is a game of chance; if you never try you can never win. Well if you did not find your love today, be disappointed do not. It is just like missing the last boat leaving the dock. There will always be another one to pick you up the next morning? And always will there be. Now, another boat is getting ready to set off soon. To the land of great romance and opportunities it will sail. The question is, will you board it? Did you find this article useful? For more useful tips and hints, points to ponder and keep in mind, techniques, and insights pertaining to guides on romance, do please browse for more information at our websites.

Walk around on a casino floor and you will quickly discover the power the word ‘fortune’ holds. In fact, there will be no doubt in your mind how many people believe in fortune because as you enter the casino, you will be wished, “good fortune.” After you take your seat at a blackjack table, you will be wished, “good fortune” and many other times while you are there. Even some video poker and slot machines will wish you well wishes of fortune and online virtual dealers wish good fortune sentiments as well. To have a Successful Gambling Trip While that may get on my last courage, I have a little secret for you. In order to have a successful gambling trip, you had better believe in the word luck at least to some degree. Even though I am not particularly fond of the sometimes empty-delivered sentiments, I realize my luck must be good in order for me to win. However, as much as I believe in luck, I believe in fate and skill more. Improve Skill and Believe in Luck Skill can be improved upon and so luck can if you believe that you make your own luck and I do. In fact, if everyone approached the casinos with a good attitude and with the belief that they were not just going to ‘take down the house’ but they were going to ‘bury it’ then casinos might have to shut their doors. Moreover, lock them! Belief on Yourself While many of you may think that, I live in a dream world and do not know what I am talking about, consider this. The power of one man referred to as ‘The Donald’ proves in itself that people can make their own luck. In fact, how many corporate lives does this man have? All that he wants and all that he believes he can achieve, he apparently owns. How to Handle the Situation This brings me to another quality that a gambler must recognize, fate. Listen to me on this because I know what I am talking about. If you are on a rare losing trip and it seems that no matter what you do, you simply cannot win. You may be running through a short spell of bad luck. It is not in the cards for you to win on this particular trip. Now, there are two ways you can handle this situation. Actually, there are three. First, you can ‘ride it out’ by lowering your bet to bare minimums (yes, table minimums). Second, you can leave the casino altogether (which may not be a bad idea) or third, you can act like money is no object (and maybe it is not) and give a huge donation to support the casino’s upcoming expansion. Hard to Change Fate Obviously, the third choice is what many people choose to do without any level of awareness that they are doing it. However, I choose to stick with the first choice. Occasionally, if I find I simply cannot ride it out, I will leave. However, I hold a strong belief that is two-fold. First, if it is not in the cards that I am going to have a profitable trip, then it will be hard for me to change fate without a good run of luck, which I will never own again unless I mess carefully through the bad luck to get there. See, luck does come and go. Even, ‘The Donald’ with all of his financial difficulties could attest to that but its how you handle yourself when Lady Luck has gone on vacation that determines your overall destiny. About Skill and Good Luck Well, I am off my pedal stool now. It is up to you to decide what you think. However, I rather like the fact that my gambling destiny is controlled by more than just one factor. Moreover, when fate is waiting to deal me a royal flush, I want to have the skill to make the most of it and use any measure of good luck to cash in big!

A chance meeting, a strange twist of fate, lives changed As I recall, the year was 2000. I was on stage in Boulder, Colorado at Jonathan Mizel's Internet marketing blowout. You know, sometimes you just get in a zone. And that year, I reckon I was in one. Zip back in time two weeks before. I was sitting in a movie theater watching a flick on screen that initially I didn't want to see. You see, it wasn't in English and you had to read subtitles the whole movie. But everyone raved about this movie. The social proof was overwhelming. So there I sat. Eyes glued to the screen. Mesmerized. The movie was Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. And the most important part of the movie was the end. It left you breathless in more ways than one. Fast forward 2 weeks. I'm back in front of the room of Jonathan's seminar. Doing a rendition of all the stupid marketing mistakes I've made in my life. And talking about the path to becoming a marketing Ninja. Mixing that with flying through the air like they do in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Well, not exactly. When you're 6' 4 1/2", you don't exactly fly through the air. It's a speech that is now infamous. Anyway, the audience was in total stitches. Falling on the floor laughing. That was ALSO the speech in which I revealed that Sandford Wallace told me over dinner he gets his best ideas in the shower. Come to find out later, a LOT of people get their best ideas there. Anyway, in the middle of the speech, two people get up and walk out. They thought it was the worst speech they'd ever heard in their lives! For others, they sat mesmerized. I got a standing ovation for what it's worth. Later, out in the hall, I was talking to a guy. I guess you could call it a chance meeting. We chatted a bit and I told this person (I don't remember the conversation in retrospect) that all they needed was self confidence. They had all the talent they needed. I could tell this from a brief chat. He had all the talent in the world. All he needed was confidence. Later that person became a really, really well-known Internet marketing -- one of the best. His name I'm proud to say is Jim Edwards. For the record, I'm NOT taking any credit for Jim's success, other than that I was at the right place at the right time with a word of encouragement a very talented person needed. Now, what if Jim hadn't gone to the seminar? What if he'd not spent the time or the money. What if he'd not gone because "the speakers sell products and do pitches" (God forbid THAT anyone should sell anything at a marketing seminar...the GALL!) But Jim Edwards took a chance. He went. And Jim would tell you that a chance meeting and a few well-chosen words in the hall changed in his life that day. I swear Jim'd tell you that if'n you asked him. Thing is, that speech wasn't video taped. There's no record of it. You know, at seminars, often the most important things don't happen on stage. They aren't video taped. They're the people you meet. The things you hear. The things you say to others. I'm pretty much an ordinary guy. Not much different than you other than I only work about 30 minutes a day most days, depending on what you call work. I spend my time doing what I personally enjoy. Which is reading and learning. I'm not a millionaire (I don't work hard enough for that.) But I make more money than most. But I have a good life. And a good living. I have control over my fate. Freedom to do the things I want. And a few good friends I've met along the way. This is a good business. I recommend it to you. Best wishes, Marlon Sanders P.P.S. In a strange twist of fate, Jim has given me some GREAT ideas for my business. What goes around comes around. Whether to stay or leave an unhappy relationship can be a very difficult decision, especially when children and other factors are involved. Will you create negative karma if you leave your marriage? Some may say that you have an obligation to stay married for your children. We disagree because we feel children know when their parents are unhappy together, and a divorce, when handled with compassion, unconditional love, and responsibility, can be the best for all involved. Divorce, itself is not terrible, but the way divorce is too often handled can be. Considering the story-book fairy tales of relationships and marriage, breaking up is the end of the world. Alternatively, if you perceive divorce as a natural part of a relationship that was destined to end, such a transition can be peaceful and tolerable. Since traditional marriage and divorce are man-made concepts rather than spiritual ones, negative karma isn’t created from the act of divorce, but the through the negative ways people act before, during and after the process of divorce. In case you’re concerned that you’ve failed if you leave your marriage, consider the following excerpt we’ve included below from our book, Your Love Life and Reincarnation, chapter 12, How Do You Know When to Leave (http://www.holisticmakeover.com/about_the_book.htm): When a relationship ends, it’s often called a “failed relationship.” This implies that it was supposed to last forever, no matter what, and if it ends before one partner dies, there is something wrong with one or both of them. This belief is unreasonable yet surprisingly common. Not all relationships are meant to last forever—or even six months, for that matter. When people try to force a relationship to meet their expectations instead of allowing it to be what it’s meant to be, the result will be unhappiness and stress. The length of time a relationship lasts is irrelevant. What really matters is how we treat and react to our partners and what is learned and accomplished in the process, which is why we, on a soul level, choose the relationships that we do. When you receive the Seal you will be expected not to do certain things, and even not to learn about some things. You will be as intangent as Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden were commanded to be. God created the world in seven days. On the fifth day He created the first man, Adam. He shaped Adam out of the earth and breathed spiritual Life into him. That is how God will set His Seal upon you. God will shape the Seal upon your forehead out of the earth too. That is because God will plant a little blessed garden in you, much like the Garden of Eden before Adam and Eve fell. The garden of the Seal is the place for a single wheat Seed to be sown. That first wheat Seed is Jesus Christ Himself. He will grow up out of your soul until He bears Fruit, and when He does you will have two choices. The Fruit Jesus bears is the Fruit of Judgment. It is the Fruit of the determining of your eternal fate. There is the Fruit which will give you eternal Life in Heaven forever. And there is the Fruit that will send you to an eternal death. This is like the choice Adam and Eve were faced with. There was the Tree of Life which would offer them Life. And there was the tree with the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil--the Forbidden Fruit. Those were the two special trees Adam and Eve could choose from. The fruit of the Tree of Life was available to freely eat from and it offered a blessed eternal Life for them. Then there was the Forbidden Fruit. They were forbidden to eat it or even touch it. They were to remain intangent, not touching that fruit or eating it. If they even touched it they soon would be tempted to eat it. Jesus bears the Fruit of Judgment when He grows up in your garden where you are sealed. This does not mean that you become judgmental of any people. No. It means that you exercise caution when you reap the harvest. Because the Fruit of Blessing which will choose a person with his or her works and bring that person up to Heaven is the Fruit you seek from Jesus. But the Fruit of Condemnation is intangent--you are not to touch that. You are not to condemn people and you are not to teach people to condemn anyone. Furthermore you are not to lead anybody into the kind of sin they can be condemned for, or teach them any such thing. The Fruit of Condemnation is intangent. You are not to do it or teach it and you are not to even learn it. You do not need to know anything about how other people lightly condemn anyone. But there is much Fruit of Blessing you can eat of and share with other people. This Fruit is not guarded by intangency. This is the Fruit from Heaven and the Fruit that shall return to Heaven. Some people have sinned too much and God will condemn them. You are intangent when it comes to their sin. You do not sin like that. And you are intangent when it comes to judging them. You do not condemn them. When you are sealed Jesus will bear the two kinds of Fruit in you--Blessing and Condemnation just like the two fruits Adam and Eve could choose in the garden. The condemnation is intangent but the blessings are yours when you receive the Seal. And now Jason would like to invite you to get your FREE report Are You Making These Mistakes as a Christian? and "Get God's 'Seal of Approval' and Get the Victory Over Evil" Jason Witt

Comparative Study between the Bible versus the Quran (34) , the second part. Chapter by Chapter and Verse by Verse; (Chapter 34:1-10) The Old Testament Verses from 1-10 are talking about the love story that ended up with mass murder and mass destruction of his entire country. The New Testament Verses from 1-10 are talking about Jesus' brothers and sisters and His commandments to the disciples that no one is following nowadays! The Noble Quran Verses from 1-10 are talking about many subjects, e.g. 1) Who is Allah?, 2) The Faith and Fate of the Believers, 3) The Faith and Fate of the Disbelievers, 4) What The Jews who have the knowledge said about the Quran, 5) The Honored King David, 6) Two Modern Scientific Subjects etc. ========= The Noble Quran: Chapter 34 in the Noble Quran is composed of 54 verses. Verses from 1-10 are talking about many subjects, e.g. 1) Who is Allah?, 2) The Faith and Fate of the Believers, 3) The Faith and Fate of the Disbelievers, 4) What The Jews who have the knowledge said about the Quran, 5) The Honored King David, 6) Two Modern Scientific Subjects etc. ---------- Know your Creator, Who is Allah? 1) Praise be to Allah, He is kind to His creation 2) Unto Him belonged whatsoever of created beings which are in the heavens and in the earth 3) His is the praise for his favor in the Hereafter upon the dwellers of Paradise in the heaven, 4) He is the Wise in His command and decree; He commanded that none should be worshipped save Him, 5) He is the Aware; He knows His created beings as well as their works. 6) He knows that which go down into the earth of rain, water, dead people and treasures and He knows what comes forth from it of plants, water, treasures etc., (- 7) He knows, also, that which descend from the heaven of rain, sustenance and other things and that which ascend into it of angels and guardian angels who carry the scrolls of the servants. 8) He is the Merciful towards the believers, 9) He is the Forgiving; He forgives whoever repents. 10) He is the Knower of the Unseen, He knows what is hidden from people. ---------- The Faith and Fate of the Believers: Allah will reward those who believe in Muhammad and in the Quran and do good works between them and their Lord. For them is pardon, their sins are pardoned in the life of this world and a fair reward in the Hereafter when they dwell the Paradise for eternity. ---------- The Faith and Fate of the Disbelievers: 1) The disbelievers say: The Hour will never come unto us. Say to them, O Muhammad: Nay, by my Lord Allah swore by Himself, the Hour is coming unto mankind surely. 2) The disbelievers denied the afterlife and mocked Muhammad and said to the lowly among people: Shall we show you a man who will tell you that when you have become dispersed in dust (after death) still, even then) Muhammad claims you will be created anew; the spirit will be given back to us after death? 3) The disbelievers said: Muhammad either has invented a lie concerning Allah, or is there in him madness?) Allah said: Nay, but those who disbelieve in resurrection after death are in torment in the Hereafter and far error from the Truth and guidance in the life of this world. 4) Have the disbelievers not observed the creation of the heavens and earth? If Allah will, Allah can make the earth swallow them, or cause obliteration from the sky to fall on them) and thus destroy them. This kind of punishment, if we will to do it, is a potent sign for those who understand and for every servant who turns to Allah (repentant) and who hastens to Allah and to His obedience. 5) Those who deny Muhammad and the Quran, will not escape Allah's punishment, theirs will be a painful doom of wrath and they will have a severe chastisement. ---------- What the Jews who have the knowledge said about the Quran? Those who have been given knowledge; the knowledge of the Torah, i.e. "Abdullah Ben Salam", the great Jewish rabbi, and his followers see that the Quran is revealed from Allah and realize that the Quran is the Truth and leads unto the path of the Mighty and guides to the religion of He Who is Mighty in retribution against those who do not believe in Him. ---------- The Honored King David: Allah gave David grace, kingship and prophet hood. Allah commanded the mountains and the birds echo his psalms of praise hymn Allah's praise with David! Allah also made the iron supple unto him) doing with it as he pleased. ---------- The Two Modern Scientific Subjects: 1) There are no straight lines in space but the lines are geodesics. Verse Two says that Allah knows all that comes down from the heavens and all that ascends (Araga in the present tense) thereto The verb "Araga" indicates irregular lines that are by no means straight; i.e. the lines are geodesics For more details, Read my article: "Space Travel: Straight or Geodesics? In Bible and Quran" 2) The Atomic Weight and the Subatomic Weight Verse Three says that Allah knows the unseen - from who is not hidden the least little atom's weight in the Heavens or on earth: nor is there anything less than that. Hence, the Quran is the first book On Earth which mentions 1) The Atom, 2) The Atomic weight and 3) The subatomic weight. No book before the Quran mentioned these three topics together. For more details, Read my article: "The Atomic Weight and the Subatomic Weight in the Bible and Quran" Think about WHO told Muhammad about these two Modern Scientific Subjects That are known recently and are of course not mentioned in the Bible?! ---------- [1] Praise be to Allah, to Whom belong all things in the heavens and on earth: to Him be Praise in the Hereafter: and He is Full of Wisdom, acquainted with all things. [2] He knows all that goes into the earth, and all that comes out thereof: all that comes down from the heavens and all that ascends (Araga in the present tense) thereto and He is the Most Merciful, the Oft-Forgiving. [3] The Unbelievers say, "Never to us will come the Hour": say, "Nay! but most surely, by my Lord, it will come upon you; - by Him Who knows the unseen - from Whom is not hidden the least little atom's weight in the Heavens or on earth: nor is there anything less than that, or greater, but is in the Record Perspicuous: [4] That He may reward those who believe and work deeds of righteousness: for such is Forgiveness and a Sustenance Most Generous." [5] But those who strive against Our Signs, to frustrate them, - for such will be a Penalty - a Punishment Most humiliating. [6] And those to whom knowledge has come see that the (Revelation) sent down to thee from thy Lord, that is the Truth, and that it guides to the Path of the Exalted (in Might), Worthy of all praise. [7] The Unbelievers say (in ridicule): "Shall we point out to you a man that will tell you, when ye are all scattered to pieces in disintegration, that ye shall (then be raised) in a New Creation? [8] "Has he invented a falsehood against Allah, or has a spirit (seized) him?"Nay, it is those who believe not in the Hereafter that are in (real) Penalty, and in farthest Error. [9] See they not what is before them and behind them, of the sky and the earth? If We wished, We could cause the earth to swallow them up, or cause a piece of the sky to fall upon them. Verily in this is a Sign for every devotee that turns to Allah (in repentance). [10] We bestowed Grace Aforetime on David from Ourselves: "O ye Mountains! Sing ye back the Praises of Allah with him! And ye birds (also)! And We made the iron soft for him; ========= Back to the main issue of my series of articles; this is my question to you smart readers: "Is the Quran quoted from the Bible?"

Allah said: Nay, but those who disbelieve in resurrection after death are in torment in the Hereafter and far error from the Truth and guidance in the life of this world.

A death in the family is always difficult and we feel compassion for those who find themselves in this situation. Our research tells us that we choose our paths (especially the key players and major events) before incarnating. However, when we say "we" we mean our souls. Once we're here on earth, "we" operate from our personalities. We as personalities have free will to make certain choices (the "right" one may be predestined and therefore feel right), but what we want isn't always for our highest good and the highest good of all involved. No matter what you or your loved one consciously wanted, his or her soul had already made the decision to leave in the case of an unexpected death in the family, for example. Pre-set circumstances in each of our lives are necessary to learn important lessons. If we all had complete free will in life, we would skip the otherwise unavoidable challenges and miss the point of being here on earth. Comprehensive numerology and astrology offer tremendous support for the theory that a great deal is predestined in our lives; conditions, opportunities, challenges, rewards, and more are consistently identified well before they manifest. These and other ancient esoteric sciences offer priceless personality, compatibility and timing insight. Further research about predestination can be found in the fascinating books written by Michael Newton, PhD. Journey of Souls and Destiny of Souls explain how our souls plan key circumstances and situations before incarnating on Earth. From an earthly perspective, it's not easy to embrace challenging life circumstances. Detaching from what you want (especially if you're not absolutely certain it's part of your highest path) and accepting and embracing "what is" makes life much more tolerable. Yes, death is always difficult to accept, but from a higher perspective, there is no good or bad, just experiences to learn from. It's been said that a true mystic views a diamond no different than he/she views a pebble. The mystic also accepts that this life is just a sentence in the text of earthly incarnations. Many members of the Property Investor Network have expressed their concern with the newspaper headlines surrounding the NCA and also the fact that several banks seems to have suffered as a result. To better understand the effect and bigger picture, let's look briefly at the situations in other leading property markets, such as the US and UK. This will help put a perspective on the South African market. Clearly, in the mature mortgage markets, led by the UK and USA, as the property markets have become more and more highly leveraged, banks have had to constantly look at the terms and conditions on which they lend – and like any business they are under pressure to increase sales. This has led to self certified bonds, buy to let bonds with just 100% and even at times no rental Coverage requirements, and bonds based on 6-8 times people’s salaries or over 30+ years; in other words stretching lending criteria to the limits in certain areas of the market. As long as house prices rise this is fine, as repossessions will save the money lent by the banks in the even of problems. Buyers who are unable to service bonds are not a cause for concern because, in an up market, banks can be assured of repossession and the ability to sell the property at value greater than the outstanding Bond amount. However, as the US property market wobbles, some market areas have experienced falls in property values of up to 15-20% - (primarily in the speculative markets). This obviously results in bankd repossessions where the bankers sit with properties that are valued at less than the bonds taken out on them. Not a very good situation to be in. It is said that in the US the areas that have suffered the most were the sub prime markets where lenders looking to increase their business had lent too easily. It appears that extensive credit was given to people with already poor credit histories. Another, known factor is that in the US the banks do lend to people with poor credit history. Will this happen in South Africa? There has already been panic about the state of the property market due to the NCA and increase of interest Rates. Though selling credit in South Africa has become a trend so dangerous that the NCA had to be instated. The mortgage lending business in South Africa still conducts itself in a very conservative manner. Mortgages have never been liberally provided to just anyone at any house price without evaluation. Prior to the NCA, bankers regularly declined to give people mortgages based on factors such as affordability or poor credit history or simple because the asking price was much greater than the value of the property. he South African mortgage market is not as mature as that of the US and the UK markets. As a result there is much scope for growth in the industry and much elasticity remaining in many household disposable income. So the market is not as saturated, mature or over exposed as the US and UK. The NCA may have caused many problems in the credit market. It may take a few years for us to fully understand and see the impacts thereof. However, the additional responsibilities and regulation placed on lenders, may also have put in place the checks to saved South Africa from a similar fate as the US in the property market in the long term. With the lending being at all time high in South Africa, if the NCA did not exist or come into affect when it did, who knows, maybe South Africa would have ended up in the same boat as the US, with over extended buyers and mortgage bonds FAR above property values. The verdict is still out on whether or not the NCA has been a good or bad thing for the country.

By David Brier, President / Creative Director, DBD International, Ltd. Recently seen in the WSJ In the $36 billion dollar beer market, the brand strength of an American beer is sometimes its most powerful "reason-to-buy." The Wall Street Journal recently had this to say about the Stroh Brewery, the nation's fourth largest brewer, now being sold off: "The sale of Stroh, a 149-year-old Detroit brewer that was once a strong contender in the beer market, is the result of poor brand management in a flat market, distributors said.... It [Stroh] didn't take advantage of its strong regional brands...." Tempting fate The above story doesn't just happen overnight. For every right thing a brand can do, it can also take as many actions that simply don't contribute anything worthwhile to a brand's presence, personality, strength and, ultimately, its sales. Let's briefly review some identity basics. Any company, product or service has an image. So... What is image? It's the public perception, not what the company, product or service is, but how it is perceived. It lives, or doesn't, in the mind of your public. What creates this image? Everything from packaging to identity-these being the messengers affecting the marketplace's perception. PR and word-of-mouth are also soldiers in this battlefield. What is identity? Not to be confused with "corporate identity" or "brand identity," identity is how the company, product or service really is, before its message has ever been exported into the marketplace, i.e., your consumer's mind and senses. What is branding? These are the collective actions-design, packaging, message, color, personality, media-taken by a company, product or service to create its image. Not done pro-actively, the brand "just happens." This is where "brand management" mentioned in the above article comes into play. To better manage your brand's "fate," we've compiled a checklist for anyone managing, or affecting, the building of a brand. Basically a "things-not-to-do" checklist, the "Seven Deadly Sins of Branding," should help make any branding efforts succeed with greater ease. Sin #1: The superior product fixation In our global marketplace, the apparent differences between products has reached an all-time pinnacle of grey, meaning the differences aren't so black and white. So he who gets to the market first and stays present (and with online media increasing every hour of each day, the battlefield is grimmer than ever), can outsell a similar product that is vastly superior. With the lines of communication around the globe literally a click of the mouse away, one can no longer rest on one's laurels for very long. To "be better than" doesn't mean as much as it used to. The solution is first, creating a brand and second, ensuring that that image connects your product-not simply it's superior attributes- to your audience. Successful examples of this are Nike's "Just Do It" and Apple's "Think Different" campaigns. Sin #2: The "no-one-can-touch-us" syndrome This pitfall rears its ugly head whenever a company reaches any level of complacency. Xerox and IBM are two examples in which each had reached an enviable level of brand equity. But time, technology and trends didn't and don't remain the same. IBM's famous striped logo was introduced over three decades ago. Only now is IBM using design and branding to reclaim their heritage. Their new e-business campaign is simple and phenomenally effective, positioning e-commerce with IBM. Why now? Because IBM found its mindshare amongst net users was low. One could say IBM had had "e-nuff." The son of IBM's founder, Thomas Watson Jr., stated over 35 years ago, while chief of IBM, "In the IBM company, we do not think that good design can make a product good.... But we are convinced that good design can materially help make a good product reach its full potential." Isn't it time we all listened? Sin #3: The brand called "Fear" Simply, if you're overly concerned about what associates think versus being overly concerned about your brand, getting anywhere near branding is a bad career move for everyone involved. The opposite side of this coin is a firm belief in one's product, a willingness to deliver what's promised, and a strength of conviction. One doesn't need to be an ogre, but one must believe in one's actions. That doesn't include being overly concerned with internal political popularity contests. Looking over the best brands, the majority came into existence driven by one person's vision, and belief, in that brand's potential and their persistence in seeing it through. This cousin to complacency-essentially an unwillingness to investigate, evolve and challenge- has killed many possibly great brands, leaving only the competition happier, and stronger. Sin #4: Ignoring the design and image your brand conveys You've seen these products. You've maybe even bought them. They're everywhere as products...and nowhere as brands. Go into a store, any store, and look. Simply look. You'll find a gazillion products. You'll also find many great products, but, with most ignoring their design and image, only a handful have become great brands. What part does image play in the real world of branding? Everything. Fact: Minute Maid® found that other orange juice companies were "borrowing" their signature black carton. What once was a point of distinction had now become "generic." Add to this the expanding choices given to consumers-bottled waters, flavored waters, iced teas, and bottled coffee beverages-and retaining marketshare had become a major issue for Minute Maid. The answer? Revamp the Minute Maid packaging line. The outcome? Volume sales increased more than 24%, with convenience store sales exceeding 34%. When you're dealing with 28 million servings per day, a mere one percent increase, 280,000 more servings per day, is considerable. Sin #5: Brand schizophrenia and anarchy Imagine this conversation: "Oh, you want to change the golden arches to day-glo pink? Sure, no problem." Not in this lifetime. You might as well print a new resume and look for another job. The confusion between building a brand, being consistent, keeping a brand alive and reinventing a brand can be so mishmashed that disaster strikes. Random change is not the same as planned evolution of a brand. Boring, stagnant messaging is not the same as brand consistency. A good rule of thumb is one laid down by Sir John Egan, chief executive for the world's leading international airport group, "Defining the experience that customers want becomes a criterion by which you can judge the design work you commission." Other points to consider are, "Does this effort contribute to our brand image and equity? Does this dilute our brand position? Will this enhance our consumers 'experience' of our brand?" This is all based on the fact that there is a foundation to build a brand upon. Sin #6: The human connection ratio The frailty of a brand is in direct ratio to the extent a brand fails to connect with its consumer. Flaunting one's wares is about as popular, and effective, as cramming in a term paper in overnight. What's good for Visine sales (remember "Takes the red out"?) isn't necessarily good for the grade. Every strong brand has in some way become a product that represents what that customer is seeking: ease, convenience, power, stamina, pride, beauty. But in each case, it's the human factor that can be missed. Every product does have, as its end use, a human who is buying the product for a reason. Find the reason, keep it on personal terms, and you're well on your way to avoiding this pitfall. Sin #7: Forgetting where brands live If you were to ask brand managers where brands live, they might say, "On the shelf with our product. In our annual report. In the people that work here." Wrong. That's how a brand gets built, not where it lives. Brands do not live anywhere but in the minds and hearts of the consumers and prospects. The job of branding is to get your product to the point of having an army of believers who stand by that brand, and what it means, in their mind. The job of branding is to get in the front door and become a comfortable fixture in the mind of the consumer. Avoiding these seven pitfalls will help. Fado. The word means fate in Portuguese. It’s also the name of a particular kind of haunting music heard principally in small cafes and bars in Lisbon. Spain has its foot stomping, fast-paced, sensual flamenco. Portugal has the slow, mournful fado sung by men and women to the accompaniment of the Spanish guitar and the Portuguese guitarra, a kind of 12-stringed mandolin. According to a spokeswomen in the House of Fado Museum near Lisbon’s waterfront, “Fado is the expression of the Portuguese soul.” Finding real fado can be difficult, as tour operators, taxi drivers and hotels tend to tout the less-than-authentic “forkloric” shows, which may be more fast moving and exciting, but is not the path to finding the Portuguese soul. On a recent trip to the Iberian peninsula, my wife and I were determined to find the real fado, not so much to find the Portuguese soul as to find a less expensive way to hear the music than the $60 per person dinner and show the tour director was touting. We also were sure we could find live fado for less than the $35 cost of several shows offered through our hotel. Using a guidebook (Rick Steves’ Spain and Portugal) and the telephone we found a small cafe in the Bairro Alto section of the city, known for its night clubs, discos and restaurants. The English speaking owner of the cafe, Canto do Camoes, assured us that we could get a full dinner and watch the performance for less than $20 each. With a couple from Connecticut we met on the trip, Joe and Amy McManus, we took a terrifying jaunt in a taxi guided by a driver who sped rapidly through narrow streets missing other cars and pedestrians by the thickness of a worn dime. The driver left us off at the base of a rise and pointed to a little street too skinny for even his small car, the Travessa da Espera. We climbed the cobblestone walk for two blocks before coming to Canto do Camoes, a small cafe capable of seating at the most 40 persons. Gabriel, the owner, greeted us and gave us a table near the small performance area. As our entree we chose fish newly caught from the ocean. The meal, which was delicious, included vegetables, a salad, a bottle of wine for each couple and dessert. Later, Gabriel threw in a glass of brandy. The four of us were his only customers. Nevertheless, the performance started on time at 9 p.m. The first singer was a short, bespectacled, gray-haired man. He took his place in front of the two middle-aged men playing the stringed instruments and threw his head back, closed his eyes, put his thumbs inside his belt and began singing. We had been told earlier that most fado songs are about love and unhappiness, a sort of Portuguese blues. Except for the fact the words were in a strange language, he could have been on Beale Street in Memphis singing of a lost sweetheart. Since we had no idea of the words of the lament, we were free to think of our own lost loves and failed ambitions or to imagine what tale the singer was relating. I fancied he was a former Enron employee telling through trembling lips of lost savings and the prospect of an old age doomed to poverty and inadequate medical care. He was followed by a massive woman, sturdy as a mountain dressed in black lace, the Sophie Tucker of fado. She had a face of crushed parchment, but her hair was black and shiny like wet asphalt. She sang with great passion and presence. I was convinced she was telling of a handsome husband killed in his youth and full manhood fighting in the Spanish civil war of the 1930s. She had never met his equal. The third singer was also a woman, younger with faded red hair and an air of melancholy. She wore a light flowered dress, but like the other singers, sang slowly with closed eyes and uplifted head. I imagined she was telling of the lost love of a jealous husband who beat her regularly and drank most of his earnings. Each singer sang three songs before giving way to another performer. After the show, they each asked us to buy recordings of their singing on tapes or CDs. Fado is not for everyone and it may be too slow and mournful for the tastes of those who have grown up with thumping, earsplitting sounds. It has old roots, but there is disagreement on what they are. Some say it goes back to the Middle Ages to the time of minstrels and their love songs. Others believe it came from the songs of the Moors who ruled the Spanish peninsula for 800 years. Another theory is that it comes from the music of slaves brought to Lisbon from Brazil. Whatever its history, it is something visitors who wish to fully experience Portugal and its culture should hear at least once. Besides the Canto do Camoes, places which have a reputation for presenting the “real fado,” include the Parreirinha de Alfama near the Fago Museum. Its owner and recording artist, Argentina Santos, also does the cooking. More casual fado is performed a few streets away at a bar with a limited menu, A Taverna do Juliao, operated by Goncal Ferreira, brother of a famous fado singer. Also known for its fado is the family-run Adega Ribatejo, where nearly everyone sings, sometimes even a few of the diners. ##
