Commercial hair dyes may make coloring your hair easy, but at a price. They can be harsh on the hair, leaving it damaged and brittle. There are many common household ingredients that can be used to create homemade hair dye solutions. You probably have some of them in your pantry right now. The ingredients you use will depend on the color you want to achieve. There are many different products that can be used to color your hair. Many of these items are probably in your kitchen right now. For example, you can use food coloring or powdered drink mix to color your hair temporarily.

To try and remove hair dye stains, simply rub toothpaste, preferably the kind that contains scrubbing granules, on the area. If your goal is to cover grey hairs, try making a mixture of rosemary and sage. Mix the ingredients in water and allow them to simmer for about a half hour. Once it has simmered, remove the pan from the heat and allow the mixture to steep for a few hours. Apply to the hair and let it dry completely. Then wash and rinse your hair with your normal shampoo. When it has dried, you will see the results. Made from such products, homemade hair dye can be used to produce everything from bright yellow to deep red or blue, without the unpleasant effects of typical hair dye chemicals.

Another homemade hair dye can be created using walnut husks and water. To have this dye, merely boil the husks in water for about 15 minutes. After boiling, stress the mix and take the liquid to distort your hair. This homemade hair dye is better for making brown hair darker. Kool-Aid beverage mixture is a favorite favourite for making homemade hair dye in shameful colors. Another manner to wrap gray is to take walnut husks. This component works better for brown hair. Mix and simmer on the stove for a half minute. Allow the mix to precipitous for a minute or then until chilly. Apply the tone to the hair and permit it to dry. Then wash the tone from the hair. People with susceptible rind who need to withdraw hair dye stains should put in a professional hair dye remover. They can be establish in beauty supply stores or bought immediately from a hair salon.

Dishwashing soap can effectively remove hair dye stains, especially when mixed with either baking soda or lemon juice. Simply rub over the area until the stains fade. If you want to be a red head, consider using kool aid for your homemade hair dye. This gives a very vibrant shade of red, depending on how it is done. Mix the powder with a little water and apply to the hair. Allow the mixture to sit on the hair. The timing will depend on how bright you want the color. You can reapply this mixture if you want the red to be a darker shade. There are tons of homemade hair dye recipes to be found on the Internet. A simple search can yield thousands of interesting ideas. Keep in mind that some recipes are meant to enhance your natural hair color or cover grey hair, while others are meant to provide a completely different look.

Gadolinium Contrast Dyes And NSF/NFD

Laurie Villanueva Health Fitness/Alternative Medicine 2008-04-27
View Detail

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) - also known as Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy, or NFD - is a severely debilitating condition that has been diagnosed in people with kidney disease following exposure to gadolinium contrast dyes used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). NSF/NFD is characterized by a hardening of the skin, as well as the excessive formation of connective tissue in the internal organs. As of yet, there is no cure for NSF/NFD, though various therapies can provide some relief, and kidney transplants have been known to slow the disease's progression. Unfortunately, some cases of NSF/NFD will result in death.

The first known diagnosis of NSF/NFD occurred in 1997, but it wasn't until September 2000 that details of the disease were published in the medical journal Lancet. NSF/NFD has only been seen in people with pre-existing kidney conditions who have undergone MRIs or MRAs involving the use of gadolinium contrast agents. The first gadolinium contrast agents were approved for use in the United States in the 1980s. These drugs have never been approved for MRA procedures, but have been widely used for this purpose. Currently, there are five gadolinium contrast dyes approved for use in the United States: Omniscan by GE Healthcare; OptiMARK by Mallinckrodt/Tyco Healthcare; Magnevist by Bayer/Schering AG/Berlex; ProHance by Bracco Diagnostics and MultiHance by Bracco Diagnostics.

Gadolinium contrast dyes became the preferred agents for MRI procedures because it was thought they were safer than older iodine-based dyes. While gadolinium in its natural state is highly toxic, the manufacturing process - where gadolinium is bound to a chelate - makes it safe for use as a contrast agent. However, gadolinium must be eliminated from the body through the kidneys, and people with kidney disease may not be able to do this. For this reason, it is recommended that if a kidney patient must have a procedure that involves a gadolinium contrast dye, they undergo a dialysis treatment shortly afterwards. While this may help eliminate gadolinium from their system, dialysis has not been proven to prevent all cases of NSF/NFD.

NSF/NFD can appear within days or months of exposure to gadolinium contrast dyes, and some patients have developed the disorder after only one exposure, while others have had multiple doses of gadolinium contrast dyes prior to onset. NSF/NFD is a progressive disease, and presents with the following symptoms:

Tightening and swelling of the skin
Thickening of the skin around the joints, restricting movement
Extremely hard or rough skin has the texture of an orange peel
Red or dark patches of skin
Burning, itching, and/or sharp pains in affected areas
Symmetrical skin lesions
Muscle weakness
Deep bone pain in the hips and ribs
Calcification of soft tissues
Yellow plaques near the eyes

It can take several years for all of the symptoms associated with NSF/NFD to appear. However, some patients have a form of NSF/NFD that progresses so quickly that they often die of complications brought on by the disease.

There is no cure for NSF/NFD, although the restoration of kidney function - usually through a kidney transplant - can improve and sometimes eliminate symptoms. Photopheresis, a treatment where blood is temporarily removed from the body and exposed to ultraviolet light before being re-injected into the patient, has been shown to help in some cases of NSF. However, the treatment is expensive - costing about $8000 every two weeks. Other treatments that have been shown to ease NSF/NFD symptoms include oral steroids, topical Dovonex, Plasmapheresis, Thalidomide, Pentoxifylline, Plaquenil and physical therapy. Some of these treatments have serious side effects, and unfortunately, not all patients will respond to them.

Any kidney patient who has been exposed to gadolinium contrast dyes needs to be aware that they are at risk for NSF/NFD, and should understand its signs. If they experience any symptoms typical of NSF/NFD, it is important to contact a doctor immediately for a skin biopsy.

Homemade Tips for Hair Dyes

Take henna powder, around 4-5 tbsp if you want to apply it only around the area which has gray hair and more if you want to apply to your entire scalp. Make a thin paste of henna powder by adding juice of lemon, a tbsp of curd, a tsp of coffee powder (optional), the water of tea leaves and amla mixture which you prepared earlier. Add 1⁄2 tsp of mustard oil in this mixture to avoid dryness. Leave this mixture in an iron vessel for about 2 hours. During winter season you add a finely grounded paste of 2 cloves to elude cold. Apply the mixture on the hair carefully, cover gray hair completely. Leave this on for about 3-4 hours. (Some prefer to keep it overnight.) Then rinse off with water.

Mix coffee powder in the water and make a paste of henna with the water. Beat the egg yolk and mix this into henna. Also add brandy to it. Apply the paste and leave it on for 3-4 hours before washing it with lukewarm water.

If you want the hair darker, make another mixture and repeat the process.

Take 3 parts of litharge and 2 of quicklime, mix thoroughly; keep in a well stopped bottle. When used mix with water or milk, apply to the hair, and envelope in an oil-skin cap fur 5 or 6 hours.

The only things I can think of are peroxide and bleach for blonde, but both are not so good for your hair. Beet juice tends to stain your hands, but it would probably make your hair purple and come out the next time you wash it.

Milk Mask is one if the easiest and cheapest mask. Moist some cotton wool with milk and rub it on the face. Avocado is a naturally affluent moisturizer. Mush the meat of the avocado into a creamy texture. Massage into the face and neck. Leave on for 15 minutes and gently wash off. The best face mask made included fresh pineapple, organic oats and acacia honey. Take 3 tablespoons of oats and blend in mix till a fine powder. Add in a tablespoon of honey and three big slices of pineapple sheared into small pieces. Blend until a fine paste. Apply with a mask brush and retire for fifteen minutes - it may cause blemishes to tingle slightly but this is okay. Rinse with warm water.

Bleeding Dyes Can Ruin Your Carpet

James Carlson Home Family/Home Improvement 2007-07-10

Carpet is a great flooring but can be affected by a number of different things. Things that can cause it harm and even permanently damage it. One of those things is bleeding dye. This can come from a number of different sources and is serious problem Read this article to learn a little about this problem and what you can do about it.

The first thing you need to do is discover the source of bleeding dye. It can be caused by several different common things in your home. One source is area rugs. Dyes from area rugs can easily transfer to the carpet with moisture. There might even be enough moisture in the air on a humid day to cause it . The most common types of rugs that bleed are expensive oriental rugs. To prevent this type of damage you should be sure to place a rug mat underneath the area rug. This will keep it form transferring dye in case the rug were to get wet. Another source of dye transfer is from labels on the bottom of furniture. To prevent this from happening always check the bottom of anything you place on your carpe for labels and tags. If they are present, remove them. The last source of dye transfer that I will talk about is furniture. Some furniture can bleed dye. This is usually the case with fabric furniture that has no legs or with skirts that touch the ground. To prevent this type of damage try to use furniture with legs that keep it a little distance above the carpet.

Carpet dye transfer is usually a permanent problem. Unfortunately the dye can seldom be completely removed so the best thing to do is preen the damage. Take a little care and put a little thought into your carpet though and you should be just fine. Good luck.

Weaving Baskets - Some Natural Dyes

There is a fascination about colouring one's own material that only one who has proved it can understand. As an artist mixes his colours, one dye after another is tried until at last a fortunate blending gives the desired shade. Solid extracts of vegetable dyes are sold which simplify the process; or, if one lives in the country, hedgerow dyes are plentiful for those who have eyes to see and patience to use them. If one does much dyeing, rubber gloves are almost a necessity, and a brass preserving kettle will be found useful. If small quantities of material are dyed at a time half- worn basins or saucepans of medium size will do. Wash the rattan and raffia, especially the latter, in soap or soda and water and rinse thoroughly before dyeing. One of the secrets of even colouring is to boil the dye slowly, leaving the material in it for hours. In this way full deep colours will be obtained even on rattan.

Indian Red. A beautiful shade of Indian red is made by boiling the material slowly for six hours in the following solution. Two tablespoonfuls of cutch extract and a small crystal of blue- stone (about as much as would go on a ten-cent piece) dissolved in one quart of boiling water.

Green from Indigo and Fustic. Mordant the material to be dyed with alum (three ounces of alum dissolved in a quart of water), and dye in a solution of one tablespoonful of indigo and a small crystal of copperas in one quart of boiling water. When the desired depth of colour is obtained remove the material, wash the loose dye from it and dye in a fustic bath (one quart of water in which one tablespoonful of fustic has been dissolved) to the shade required. Instead of fustic, bark extract may be used. If a brighter shade is needed, add one or two tablespoonfuls of alum mordant to the bath.

Olive Green. Soak the rattan or raffia in water, then in one quart of water in which one tablespoonful of copperas has been dissolved, for half an hour. Boil in a fresh bath of one tablespoonful of bark extract, half a teaspoonful of indigo and one-quarter of a teaspoonful of logwood to one quart of water.

Dark Bluish Green. Soak the material in a bath composed of one tablespoonful of copperas in one quart of water for half an hour. Then boil in a fresh bath of one quart of water in which one tablespoonful of bark extract, three quarters of a teaspoonful of indigo and a piece of logwood extract the size of a pea have been dissolved. Let it simmer for several hours or until the desired shade is obtained. The same proportion of dye in two quarts of water will give light shades.

Dark Red. A good dark red is made with three- quarters of a teaspoonful of logwood extract, one-quarter of a teaspoonful of fustic extract, two tablespoonfuls of cochineal, two tablespoonfuls of stannous chloride and one-quarter of a tea- spoonful of cream of tartar, in one quart of water. Boil slowly for several hours.

Orange. A beautiful orange may be made with one tablespoonful of orange fustic, one- quarter of a teaspoonful of cochineal, two table- spoonfuls of stannous chloride, one-quarter of a teaspoonful of alum in one quart of water. Boil slowly until the colour is a little deeper than you wish, as it will dry lighter.

Yellow Brown. Boil the material slowly in the following solution for several hours. One tablespoonful of cutch extract to one of fustic in one quart of water.

Olive Brown from Cutch. To one tablespoonful of cutch extract allow one tablespoonful of fustic and one-quarter of a teaspoonful of logwood. Dissolve in one quart of water. The material should boil slowly in this bath for several hours.

Brown from Madder. In one quart of water dissolve one to two tablespoonfuls of madder. Do not allow it to boil, but leave the material in it for five or six hours, just below the boiling point.

Introduction

In recent years the usage of natural dyes and colors for fabric dyeing has witnessed its revival due to hazardous experience due to effects of synthetic dyes and chemicals. The natural dyes are eco-friendly, harmless and non-toxic in nature. Also, the usage of renewable sources of energy in textile and apparel industry has been increased due to many advantages associated with it. Solar energy usage for dyeing purpose is a cost effective method. In hot countries like India, the sun shines bright for 60% of the day, using solar energy to dye silk fabric with turmeric dye is cheap and environment friendly method.

Things required

There are certain things required in order to dye the silk with turmeric dye which are listed as follows- turmeric plant stems, raw silk fabric yarn, diluted nitric & acetic acid and mordants like alum & stannous chloride.

Before applying the dye to the fabric the process of removing sericin from silk is done. Here the silk fabric is first treated with ezee kept in it for approximately one hour then washed and dried. This whole process is known as degumming.

Enhancing of dyeing parameters

To dye the silk fabric with turmeric dyes certain procedures are to be followed. The dye dilution, the time taken for its extraction, time for dyeing, amount of mordant used and mordanting process are to be taken care of to result into turmeric dyed silk fabrics which is evenly dyed with no color patches or differences in shade.

Not only yellow color is produced through dyeing with turmeric dyeing but also many other colors are produced when turmeric dye is mixed with other colors, like - orange, green, blue color with addition of indigo and red color with addition of safflowers and mango rind.

You might think how both red and yellow colors are produced through turmeric dye in its original form, the answer lies in the type of liquid used for concentration. When the solution is prepared in acidic liquid it would produce yellow dye and when alkali liquid is used it would produce red dye.

Time for dye extraction:

In order to extract the dye, aqueous mode is utilized. The dye is examined for its evenness and color shade by quality control supervisors before applying to the fabric. The turmeric powder is which is one gram is diluted with 100 ml of water. Four such solutions are prepared. Each one is boiled for four different time period i.e. 20, 40, 60 and 80 minutes in a solar cooker.

Time taken for dyeing:

The optimum dye solution is utilized to standardize the dye concentration. The dyes undergo the procedure of absorption in the solar cooker time ranging from 30-180 minutes. The absorption power of the silk fabric determines the dyeing time

Concentration of acid:

The two acids used for dilution are acetic and nitric acid. From each of diluted acid, 20 ml is mixed into the dye bath. The dyes are examined for their absorption power. This examination is done visually.

Mordants usage:

The mordants discussed earlier Alum and Stannous chloride are used here. The process of dyeing and mordanting are done together. Both these mordants are mixed with water which results into optimized mordants.

Procedure for mordanting:

There are two methods in mordanting premordanting and postmordanting. The pre-requisite of this process is to keep other things like dyeing time, acid concentration, etc. steady. By looking at the dyes the method of mordanting i.e. pre or postmordanting to be used is decided.

They are also categorized by the generations as they were produced in the different years and known as first generation, second generation, third generation or fourth generation fibres. This is given in the below chart:

Does Hair Dye Cause Cancer?

Peter Hutch Health Fitness/Fitness Equipment 2008-03-16
View Detail
Never mind that permanent hair dyes with a high chemical composition may stress and dry out your hair. There is a lot more questions about what hair dyes can do besides causing damaged or destroyed hair follicles.

A large percentage of both American men and women use permanent hair dyes of some sort. Since the current population of Baby Boomers is aging, the number of people dying or coloring their hair in the US has been increasing steadily. The US Census Bureau estimated that over 22 million women alone would dye their hair by the year 2003.

The causes of most cancers are unknown. However certain risk factors, for example smoking or exposure to toxins at work, are known to be associated with certain cancers. In every case of cancer there are multiple factors at play. Your genes and your general health will both play a part in determining whether your exposure to known carcinogens (cancer causing substances) will result in your contracting cancer. Research that suggested alink between hair dye and bladder cancer has been contradicted by more recent research and it is now thought there is no such link.

The most recent research on the hair dying problem was carried out a few months ago and published in the American Journal of Epidemiology on May 26, 2006. It was conducted at the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Barcelona on data gathered from six European countries. The analyzes showed that the risk of suffering from non – Hodgkin's lymphoma increased with 19% in individuals that use hair color from time to time, while those who get their hair dyed on a regular basis – like monthly - the risk of cancer raises to 26%.

Strong evidence showing that the use of hair dye increases the risk of cancer. Specifically, the research team found that, worldwide, the use of hair coloring products has no apparent effect on breast and bladder cancers, but may slightly increase the risk of leukemia and multiple myeloma. However, they said that the causal effect was too weak to be a major concern.

Some research has indicated that using hair dye may lead to increased risk of bladder cancer, while other research has suggested it doesn’t. Some of the research has considered different types of dyes and others haven't. Some studies have probably been too small to show up any small increase in risk. In the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) May 2005, there was a large meta analysis published that looked into all the research on hair dyes causing cancer. A meta analysis is research that pulls together all previous study results. This has found that there is unlikely to be any link between hair dye use and bladder cancer.

An analysis of the many studies examining a possible link between hair dye use and cancer was unsupportive of a cause and effect relationship. Although it remains unlikely, there could still be a small risk associated with certain cancers. More studies focusing on hairdressers, who are routinely exposed to the chemicals in hair dyes, may shed more light on a possible connection with cancers.

Hair dye is unlikely to be a significant risk factor for cancer, if it is one at all. Family history, diet, smoking, and exercise have far more to do with cancer risk than whether or not you choose to be a brunette or a blonde.

Some Tips Regarding Textile Dyeing

Rama Textile Shopping/clothing 2007-06-11
View Detail

Textile Dyeing is one of the most Important step to give a fabric a new look, durability and attraction. As Rama Tex(http://www.ramatex.co.in)indulge in Textile Dyeing in India for its large number of clients. We give emphesis on good quality of dyeings.

1.) Mostly we imapart Natural Dyes, these are colors extracted from plants, having fixed quantity of minerals, salts like,
aluminum iron, the particles are boiled in water to extract the dye, transferred to the dyebath and heated for a permanent,
rich color fabric having 80% cellulose fiber, like cotton, rayon are considered best for dyeing, mixture of cotton and
polyester produce nicefabric stuff. But one should always avoid total polyester or total nylon for dyeing.

2.) After tieing is done so as to dry febric with soda Ash with proper care.

3.) After mixing of the dyes should be done up to one week in a good refrigeration fiber reactive dye are most appropriate
for fiber.

4.) For Better Reaction fabric stays wet for ten to twenty-four hours, and Ideal Temp should be 20-22*C.

5.) Main problem people faces are, un desired light colors especially yellow or orange, dark to light regions is reduced by
waiting a 24 hour before washing out.

To understand how textiles are dyed we need to know something about the nature of the textiles themselves. Textile fibres
are made from relatively simple molecules that under the right conditions join together to form long-chain molecules,
polymers. These polymers in turn come together in one of a number of ways to form a fibre. With natural fibres nature has
done the polymerisation, while in the man-made fibres the chemistry of the fibres has been engineered in the laboratory to
produce a fibre that feels nice, can be woven or knitted, and can be dyed.

Principles of Dyeing
1. working out how much time the process needs and what temperatures will achieve the desired results

2. Most natural dyes need both a plant extract and a mineral mordant to make a permanent colour.

3. The stronger the dye extract - the more plant used - the deeper the colour.

4. Running quality control checks to make sure it is the correct colour, is colourfast and will not fade or run when washed

5. refining the dye formula to produce a final version, which textile workers use in the manufacturing process

6. Mineral (metal salt) mordants are always used in the same PROPORTION. One can use less for a pale colour, but NEVER USE MORE, as too much metal can harm the fibre.

7. Prepare your textile material for the rigours of the dyebath: put FIBRE in a MESH BAG; tie YARN IN SKEINS, using thin
yarn ties; PRE-WASH FABRIC or garments to remove any sizing.

We main work is centered at Cotton fabric Dyeing, Polyster febric Dyeing, Poly Cotton Dyeing, Nylon Dyeing. As India is rich
in Embriodery, a lot demand in Embriodery we apply great quality of Embriodery Dyeing Our Ramatex Meerut unit is a leading

Removing black hair dye

Deepak Bansal Health Fitness/Acne 2007-01-16
View Detail

Hair dye’s are used by people every where to give their hair a 3D’cle look making them look good, but when it comes to removing hair dye especially “Black” hair dye it’s a whole new aspect as it needs more attention and more precautions to attend to the health of the hair after the process. Removing black hair dye is a special case; continue reading and we tell you various methods of removing it from our hair and other undesirable places.

Removing black hair dye is a tricky process, and if it’s permanent the process gets trickier. The best way or method is to let nature of our body do it’s work, what do you mean you say, let your natural black hair outgrow the black dyed hair. If you in a hurry or your annual dinner is just round the corner and your need a quick hair do, bleaching with chemicals is the only way to go. Bleaching is a straining process, not for you of course with you sitting on the salon reading magazines with air conditioning; but to your hair.

Bleaching makes your hair stretchy and thin, as bleaching bleaches away the black dye and the outer layer of your hair making it fragile. If it’s done in a non-professional matter your hair may come loose on your comb, don’t get frighten like you got cancer. The main caution when removing black hair dye is that so it is to be removed evenly. After the bleaching process a toner is recommended to be used as this would reduce the orangey tone of the hair. It also acts as a conditioner for the hair preventing further damage.

Other options are also available to be used for removing black hair dye, which is to use other colored dyes to remove it after some mild bleaching and shampooing. A mixture of powder bleach and shampoo/conditioner is used, whilst preparing the mixture with equal parts of water. A creamy consistency or mixture is to be obtained after a mild mixing of the ingredients is done.

The mixture after been applied evenly and quickly slows down the bleaching process that actually strains the hair. This process is to be done at salons with people who are professionals in such fields, but for people that are equip with enough knowledge and practice it can be done at home. The time frame which the mixture is left on the hair is also a vital factor, if a short duration is at hand it would make the process easier but the whole process would take a much longer period of time as several trips are needed to complete the whole circle of process.

Black hair dye has to be dealt with respect, as it is difficult to be removed from any surface including skin and fabric. Applying Vaseline along the hairline is a good idea for prevention. Several other ways of removing black hair dye like rubbing cigarette ash, dipping milk in cotton balls, using WD-40, nail polish and hair spray over the stained area can also be applied.

Hand Dyed Yarn - Making Variegated Yarn

Robin OBrien Home Family/Crafts 2007-10-31

Knitting with hand dyed yarn is becoming more and more popular as people are discovering the beautiful and unique qualities of garments made from hand dyed fiber. Buying variegated hand dyed yarn can be expensive, so why not make your own? It's easy, fun and rewarding.

Variegated yarn knits up beautifully. So, be brave and make your own. You don't really need any fancy equipment or dyes and it's not as difficult as you might think.

What You Need.

Cushings dye white vinegar glass or other nonreactive casserole dish plastic cups apron wet sponge for cleaning up spills rubber gloves dust mask pH strips optional: water softener

Making Variegated Yarn

Rainbow-dyeing, sprinkle-dyeing, tie-dyeing, and casserole-dyeing are all names for the same process of creating yarn that has many different colors. Cushing dyes is used in the recipe below and will work on un-spun fiber, yarn or cloth. What matters is that the fiber content be animal-based: silk, wool, alpaca, camel or angora.

Soaking In Vinegar

You first need to soak the fiber to be dyed in a vinegar water bath with a pH of 4.5 to 5.0. You need about a tablespoon of vinegar for every quart of water. Note: the acidity of water varies so check with pH paper and adjust if necessary. Strips to measure pH are readily available at many drugstores and retail outlets.

Dye Liquor

For a medium shade, mix 1/4 teaspoon dye in 1/2 cup water. Use more dye for darker shades, less for lighter. Mix as many colors as you want.

Dyeing

Remove the yarn from the vinegar soak and gently squeeze out excess water. Lay it in a nonreactive baking pan - do not use anything with a non-stick coating. You can use enamelware, glass and stainless steel but do not use aluminum, copper or steel. Arrange the yarn anyway you like: fold, tie, twist, spiral and/or zigzag. You can apply the dye in various ways; a squeeze bottle, a syringe or a sponge paintbrush. You can just simply pour it on the area you choose if you like. Remove any excess from the pan with a syringe.

Heating

Rinse out excess dye from the yarn - the water should run clear - and wash with a mild soap. It's important to use soap as it's best to find out if the garment is non-fast now rather than later after you've made it into something. Rinse again well and hang to dry. You are ready to knit with your own hand-dyed yarn.

How Does Hair Dye Work?

Anthony J. Carter Health Fitness/Beauty 2008-02-07
View Detail
Back in the old days, when hair dyeing was in its infancy, hair color products routinely gave off a rather noxious rotten egg type of odour. It is good news then that today, the modern equivalents of these bygone products smell a whole lot nicer. The great thing about these present versions is that they are so much simpler to apply as well. Whether it be to wet hair or dry, quite a few of the colouring products available today can be worked into the hair forming a shampoo like lather, left to work its magic (with or without a plastic hair covering piece, depending on the product) then rinsed out and conditioned. How simple is that?

Unfortunately, simplicity comes at a price, as is most often the case in life. Chemicals present in the hair dye, such as ammonia and peroxide, can be just as harsh and damaging to your hair today as were the chemicals in the early days of hair colouring, and this is especially true if you dye your hair too often. Obviously your hair is going to react differently to different levels of the chemicals found in various types of products, but generally there are three main types of hair colouring levels used by the main hair product companies today- semi-permanent, demi-permanent and permanent.

Semi-permanent colour basically adds colour to the hair without changing the natural colouring too much. This kind of hair dye consists of tiny molecules that enter the hair through the cuticle but do not affect the hairs natural pigmentation. After several washes these molecules, because they are so small, eventually exit the hair shaft leaving your hair as it was before the hair dyeing treatment. Semi-permanent hair dye usually lasts from six to twelve shampoos and has the ability to cover up to fifty percent of your greys. It enhances the natural colouring of your hair but doesn't lighten it due to the fact that it contains no ammonia or peroxide.

Demi-permanent hair dye colours usually last a lot longer than the semi-permanent variety, at around 22-28 shampoos. The pre-coloured molecules enter the hair through the cuticle, as in the semi-permanent dye but once in the hairs cortex they fuse with other molecules to give medium sized colour molecules. Because these molecules are larger in size, they now take that much longer to wash out of the hair. Demi-permanent hair dye does not contain any ammonia so the natural pigmentation of the hair cannot be lightened, but it does contain a small amount of peroxide which allows for slight (but noticeable) colour change.

Permanent hair dye is what is used for major hair colour changes, for example going from black to blonde or vice-versa. Permanent hair dye uses both peroxide and ammonia so when the molecules enter the hair they react and expand to a size that cannot actually be washed out. The only way out with this method, apart from re-dyeing, is to let the hair grow out. This type of hair dye reacts by lightening your natural hair pigmentation, forming a new base and then adding a new permanent colour which combines with your own natural hair pigment. This is the reason the colour you have to chosen to dye your hair with may look different on you than on someone else who has used the same colour. As hair grows at a rate of about half an inch a month, this kind of hair dye will present the problem of roots, so you will probably need to touch up the dye every few weeks.

The Various Types of Leather Dye that You Can Choose to Use

Leather is one of the softest materials to the touch that you can find. While there are some places which will sell you leather products in neutral colors, you can look for other colored leather products. These leather goods are in their own way as attractive as the natural colored ones. The item that is used to provide the leather with a different coloring is that of leather dye.

There are various types of leather dyes that you can choose to use. Some of the dyes will be that of chemical based compounds while others may be of a natural base. The popular base for a natural leather dye is that of vegetable dye products. With these you will find that potential damage to your leather goods is lessened.

The first step to getting a good leather dye is to make sure that you are buying a product that is known to be safe for leather products. You can do a product review for this on the internet to eliminate harmful dyes. Once you have found the right type of leather dye the next step is to go to the stores and see an actual piece of leather which has been stained with the chosen dye color.

You should do this as the leather dye which is found in the bottles can often be different when you apply it to the leather. Having found a satisfactory leather coloring you should see if there are any instructions which are provided for you to apply the leather. One of the first items that you may want to consider when you are buying a leather dye is the condition of the leather product.

If there are any signs of damage you should consider having the leather section that is damaged fixed. Once this part has been fixed you will then be able to see how the leather is shaped into the item that you originally found it in.

By seeing to this matter you can then decide on the best way to apply the leather dye. Before you do any of these steps you should look at the color of the item that you are dyeing. This will allow you to match the color of the dye to the closet one that you can. Make sure that you are applying the dye in the same direction as the fabric of the leather.

At the end of your journey into the world of leather dyes you will see the many items that are necessary to make a leather product look great. The only item that is then left is for the item in question to dry before you begin using it.

Lots of people have such fair eyelashes that they need to wear mascara all the time, but overuse can cause drying out of the lashes which in turn can cause dryness and possibly consequent fall out. This is why there is such a demand from the clients of beauty salons worldwide for a permanent solution to eyelash color.

So voila - Eyelash Dye.

There are also times when wearing mascara is out of the question. For instance if you are swimming or going to the gym and you still want to look good.

Who wants their eyes to look 'piggy'piggy' (ie small) and you're not going to look your best. Are you?

If you thinking about dyeing your lashes you'll read lots about the dangers of the procedure. Well let me tell you, I've often had it done and guess what? No problems. As long as you go to a good reputable salon you will be OK

What you must never do is try it at home. Why take the chance. It's too near your eyes to take chances If you decide that you really do want to do this at home, possibly because of cost or convenience, please understand that you will almost certainly never get professional results. It's like comparing most things done by a professional. They are usually 150% times better- even something as apparently simple as painting a wall will look better when a professional does it, i.e. streaks, runs, not enough preparation etc etc. etc. - need I go on.

The Advantages of Eyelash Dye

No need to wear mascara Great if you're allergic to mascara. Who doesn't want to wake up in the morning with beautiful dark silky lashes? Look good even when you've just come out of the sea.

The Disadvantages of Eyelash Dye

Cost, although compares favorably with many other beauty treatments. Sometimes its not easy getting to a salon. It's not permanent and has to be renewed regularly.

Do your own research if you are still worried. As long as you take care and do your own research you should be happy with the outcome.

For those who want to stand out and be unique, there are a lot of ways to do it. You can do all sorts of things to get noticed. In this society we live in, there are many people who pull stunts just to get noticed. One of the more common ways of attracting attention is through the clothes we wear. And no other group of people has achieved such attention through a radical clothing style than the hippies. The hippies’ love for color and mixture epitomizes a liberal clothing style that is unique and cannot be duplicated.
The hippies loved to be different. It was their way of expressing their vision of a different society. They defied almost everything the society approved of or established. Even the simplest aspects of their lives, such as their clothes, stood out from the crowd. The hippies liked to make their own clothes. This was because of their desire to express themselves in everything they do. Even their own clothes speak of who they were. To achieve this, they started the trend of tie-dyeing shirts.
Tie-dyed shirts are unique in every way. Every design stands out, every color mixes differently with all the others. No two tie-dyed shirts will look exactly alike. The tie-dyed shirts are a true symbol of what the hippies lived for. Liberation, because of the way the colors freely mix with each other. Self-expression, because of the uniqueness of each piece.
Because of the uniqueness of tie-dyed shirts, they were able to obtain a following even after the age of the hippies. Up until now, they are being designed by a lot of people and designers. Even if the contemporary hippies still claim the tie-dyed shirts as their trend, a wider range of people now use tie-dyed shirts. It has become an easy and surefire way to get noticed, to stand out, and to express oneself. It has become a social symbol and a fashion icon.
There are many ways to get your hands on a tie-dyed garment. There are many out on the market. However, the genuine tie-dyed shirts are harder to find. Most people choose to have the true tie-dye experience by making the shirts at home on their own. Although relatively easy, making tie-dyed shirts can be quite messy, and the outcome is always unpredictable. Those who want a tie-dyed shirt, however, need not worry. Some companies offer easy-to-use dyes, or dyes that can be cleaned easily, but here’s the best offer yet.
The Sunburst Tie Dye Company is a company who can provide your tie-dyeing needs. Their services not only apply to shirts alone. They also offer tie-dyed hats and tank tops. They also offer products for both the young and the old, the men and the women. They have a vast array of designs and color mixes that you can choose from. They also offer customized tie-dyeing services, where you can design your shirt or any other garment, and they can do the tie-dyeing for you. This way, you are sure to get the design you want, without all the mess.
The products of the Sunburst Tie Dye Company are original, of good quality, and durable. Their tie-dyeing products are safe to use, and so will your garments be. These safe dyes are also available for purchase, so you can still do some of the dyeing at home on your own. This will definitely help you accessorize your home with colors and freely express yourself. It’s also a good way to release those creative juices. Be liberated; be free from restrictions. Go wild and crazy with the colors. Tie-dye whatever you want, as long as you use the Sunburst Tie Dye Company products. However, to avoid the hassle, easily stand out by ordering a readymade or a customized tie-dyed shirt or other garment by Sunburst Tie Dye Company.

Hand Dyed Yarn - Using Grape Juice To Make Your Own Dye

Robin OBrien Home Family/Crafts 2007-10-10
View Detail
Creating your own hand dyed yarn isn't difficult and can be fun. With a little practice, you'll making yarn that is beautiful and unique. Here's a recipe using grape juice. With wool get a dusty-rose color, on cotton you'll get soft lavender.

The following yarn dye is made from frozen juice which you can buy at your local supermarket. You'll also need some salt.

First off you should select your yarn that is to be hand dyed. Different fibers take dye differently. All-wool yarn, like Lion Wool, takes on color much more easily than other fibers. Cotton takes on very subtle, pastel shades when hand dyed. In fact, you'll find that using the same dye on a wool fiber and a cotton fiber can produce fibers of differing colors.

All the equipment you need to dye yarn is in the kitchen. Until quite recently hand dyeing yarn was a quite common activity in most kitchens. The following items are what you'll need.

1. One good knife and chopping board. 2. Stainless steel or enamel pots. Don't use those coated with anti-stick materials. 3. A stove - of course. 4. A timer - not an egg timer but something that lasts a period of time; a clock will suffice. 5. You need tongs or spoons to handle the yarn. If you doing more than one color at a time you should use different utensils. 6. You need a clothes horse or somewhere else to allow your yarn to dry. 7. Takes notes. If you make a color you like you'll want to repeat it; detailed notes about quantities and timing will help you to repeat the process.

Making the grape juice dye

This quantity is enough to make 2 skeins of wool or cotton: 2 large cans of frozen grape juice; you can use fresh grape; 4 tbsp salt; 4 cans water.

Bring the above to the boil, stirring occasionally.

Bundle the yarn for dying into a hank. It should be looped loosely so that the dye will be able to circulate freely but also needs to be secured so it does not tangle; you don't want to be spending a lot of time untangling it when it's wet. Bundling is particularly important for wool yarn, which will felt together if allowed to move during dying. Here is how to make the bundles:

Wind the yarn into a large loop. You can do this on a swift; by wrapping it around the back of a chair; by wrapping it around your forearm from your fingers; under your elbow and back up again.

Secure the wound yarn by tying it loosely in two places using short sections.

If your pot is small, double the loop, twisting it into a smaller circle and securing it with two more short pieces of yarn.

You help to spread the dye evenly but first dampening the yarn.

Carefully put the yarn in to the dye bath.

Cook the yarn for 1 hour. If the liquid evaporates below the height of the yarn you can add more water.

Test the color by taking a small section and rinsing it. If you like the color you can remove the yarn or else leave it longer to take on more color.

After one hour, remove the yarn from the bath and rinse it in cool water. Rinse the yarn until the water runs clear. Do NOT throw away the dye bath until the yarn has dried completely and you know you are satisfied with the color. Find out whether your yarn is color-fast by rinsing with soap as well as water. It's better to find out now before you've made the yarn into something.

Wring out the yarn.

Cut the second set of ties on the yarn, but leave the first ones in so that the yarn is in a big loop. When dying wool, put it back on the swift or chair or whatever you used when you first wound it. Rewind the yarn into a ball and then rewind it back into its loop. This will help to unfelt some of the strands that may have felted together slightly. It's much easier to unfelt yarn when it's damp.

Hang up the yarn to dry naturally.

You Will Never Have To Dye Your Hair Again

Introduction

We all share the experiences: spending the money, being left with an odd shade, staining clothes, etc. Dying your hair just isn t worth it. Still, it is a woman s right to change her mind, and her looks too. If only there was a solution to the plethora of issues arisen by the event of coloring, then things would be better .

There is a great solution. Buy a beautiful wig. Wigs are inexpensive compared to the continuity of coloring, and they come in all shades and any style you desire. You would not be alone; the stars love wearing wigs to save their own hair and to change their looks.

The horrors of hair coloring

There are many reasons not to dye your hair. The following lists some of the most menacing reasons to stay away.

- It takes time to dye your hair, while the effects do not last very long (even with permanent hair dye).

- What if you decide you don t like it? You either have to wait for your own hair to grow back, or go through the timely and costly experience again.

- Some will get allergic reactions to certain dyes. Skin can be left blotchy or flaky- not very attractive.

- If you are not extra careful, the dye can stain your skin and/or clothes.

- If you are getting it done professionally, it can become expensive (especially if you are attentive to your roots).

- Some will pick a shade that doesn t look right for their skin tone. This makes the job look unnatural and not very appealing.

- Dying damages your hair!! Hair can become over-dry and brittle from too much dying; and in worst case scenarios, your hair can begin to fall out.

These reasons are reason enough to stop the dying. As aforementioned, it is nice to have the option of doing something different with your looks without the threat of damage to your hair. That is why purchasing a wig is the best solution. Be different anytime you like and go back to your original color anytime you like. It is too easy not to take advantage.

Choose the new you

- It takes seconds to don a wig, and the color of the wig lasts forever, you don t have to worry about the color fading.

- There is no crisis in choosing a wig. Take your time in selecting the wig or wigs you like. The worst-case scenario entails taking the wig off and still having your own hair.

- There are no events of allergic reactions to wigs because there is no involvement of harmful toxins and chemicals.

- You won t have to worry about a wig staining your clothes. In fact, you can purchase several wigs to go along with particular shades of clothes.

- Wigs are not very expensive, especially compared to repeated visits to the salon.

- The best news in choosing a wig is that you will not damage your own hair. You have the ability to celebrate new looks without the damaging side effects of dying your hair.

- Wigs come in different styles. Not only do you avoid damaging your hair by coloring, but you also avoid damaging your hair by using hot irons, blow dryers, etc.

-Subtle additions like extensions can liven up your current look and have you turning heads.

MRI Dye May Be Life-Threatening

Nick Johnson Health Fitness/Health Fitness 2008-03-01
View Detail

You or a loved one may unknowingly have your health, life, and financial future threatened soon after taking a needed MRI scan. This scan requires an injection of MRI dye to increase the visibility of harmful tissue, and under ordinary circumstances, your kidneys will flush it out in a timely manner.

If you have any history of kidney problems, however, there is cause for concern. MRI dye is meant to help treat illnesses you already had to begin with, not make your condition even worse. You should watch out for symptoms of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis or nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy (NSF or NFD) especially if it was for an MRA, a procedure that has yet to be approved, instead of an MRI.

MRI dye side effects to look for include hardened skin, stiffness, difficulty of movement, bone pain, muscle weakness, discolored skin spots, skin lesions, burning, itching, yellow spots on the eyes, and possible hypertension. If you have a severe case of MRI dye symptoms, it is possible that you are unable to walk and must use a wheelchair. NSF and NFD are extremely rare, with only several hundred cases of them worldwide, and almost entirely preventable diseases.

Therefore, due to recently applied FDA regulations, it is now the responsibility of the dye's manufacturer to see that you and your physician are warned clearly of its potential dangers. While there are no known cures for NSF or NFD, in order to fight them, you may want to visit your physician a second time to expose a sample of your blood to ultraviolet light and inject it back into your bloodstream.

Also know that your physician's responsibilities include screening you for kidney problems before injecting you with MRI dye. If this or any other necessary precaution is neglected, you may take both the dye's manufacturer and the physician to court.

You have every right to file a lawsuit if anything has gone wrong after you have an injection of MRI dye. See your state's laws for time limits. In choosing a lawyer, you should find at least two or three ideal candidates to represent you and interview them to see who will give you the best chance of winning full compensation. The more relevant evidence you are able to present, the less time it may take to bring your case to closure.

Do not hesitate to take legal actions as soon as possible. Your future and that of your loved ones may depend on it.
