When you go through the drive through at a nearby fast food restaurant do you want a robot to take your order? Wouldn't you rather talk to a human that greets you like a person? Do we want our children to address us as yes sir and ma'am? Does anybody actually want to date the computer from the original Star Trek series? What about something more than marriage? |

You are the only one who controls your destiny. Yes you. And you know what; you are preprogrammed to do so. Most of the time we are the one who gets in our own way. So when you want to change what happens, how do you do it? That is what I will talk about today. There are a few steps that you must take to become who you want to be. And that is the same in anything, a business person, athlete, teacher, coach, whatever it is; here are the steps that you need to follow. Oh, and before we get to work, I must include this does not come from me. This comes from people who are much smarter and much more successful then me.
1) Set Goals. You have to set goals, and they have to be specific. On top of that you have to write them down. Here is why. A goal without action is not a goal, it is a dream. A dream becomes a goal through action. Writing your goals down becomes action and action leads to attaining your dreams. It is a giant circle, and it begins with setting goals, and writing them down. Don’t be afraid to set big goals either. In coaching and with myself I used to think that you need to set small goals that are within reach. Reaching these small goals gives you success and pride, and a time to reassess yourself and set new goals. Although this works for some people, that is not what I am after anymore. Small goals mean small achievement. I want something big, something huge, something so large that I have to work really hard to get it. Here is what I do. I set a goal, and attach a date to it. Attaching a date sets a time to reassess the goal. If the goal is not reached, it is not a big deal as long as I know that I worked as hard as I could for that goal, and kept it in mind the whole time. As long as I made a good, honest, effort to reach it, if I fall just short, that is ok. If I set a big goal, and don’t even get close to reaching it, then I need to look only one place, me. So set your goals, set them high, write them down, and keep them in a place where you can see them. That is the last step. Put them where you can see them, and keep them in mind all the time. 2) Write a Personal Affirmation. A Personal Affirmation is a statement that is written, and said by the person writing it. Basically it is way to pump you up. These are best read, and repeated in the morning and evening, just after waking up and going to bed. That will keep the personal affirmation fresh in your head. It is a great way to start your day, and end it. A personal affirmation should be written in the positive. Always the positive! It also needs to be written in the now. For example. If you want to be out of debt, don’t say ‘I want to be out of debt.’ Debt for most of us would be a negative. This causes you to focus on the negative. We want this to be an affirmation statement, focused on the positive. The next option would be to say ‘I will be rich’. This is good because we are focusing on the positive, but it is bad because we are not in the now. Even if you are not rich a better statement would be ‘I am rich’ or ‘I pay cash for everything’. Both of these statements gets you out of debt, and is in the now and positive. 3) Do Something! Action always beats inaction. One of the toughest things for people who are transitioning from the workforce to entrepreneurship is action. It is a scary thing to put your life on the line, your financial well being, and your abilities as a creative business person. But you know what, if you try, you put things in action, and you don’t give up, you will be successful. The only way people fail is to quit. Don’t quit. It will be hard, it has to be or everybody would be doing it. It is not for everyone. If you are the type of person who is completely terrified of failing then don’t start, you will fail at sometime. I was that person. It took me two years to pull the trigger. I was completely afraid of failing. So finally I just did it, my reason became bigger than my fear (my next article will be on that topic). And you know what, I failed my first time. Actually I failed my first few times; it put me in a lot of debt. But all of a sudden, and from everyone I have talked to it is a sudden change, I became successful. Things started happening. Did I want to quit? Yes of course, but I stayed with it. I did not quit. This is what I found. Even making mistakes helped me in the end. I was able to learn from my mistakes, and I knew not to do that again. It took a lot of education, and it took action, but eventually I learned what works for me, what my destiny is and can be. And it happened very quickly. I am no Bill Gates, but I am happy, I am making money, and I am having fun. Those are my goals. You need to set your own. I read my personal affirmation statement every morning and every night. I have it posted on my mirror in my bathroom, and on the wall next to my desk. That has been the most empowering thing I have done. Lastly, I am doing something. If you are wondering what the next step is do these three. The step after that will present itself, and then take action. You know what, you can read all these steps in books, and guru programs all you want, but if you don’t put them in action, nothing will happen |

“A person often meets his destiny on the road he took to avoid it”. (Jean De La Fontaine)
Many people go through life searching for meaning and purpose. Some people don’t think about anything other than what they are doing today, while other folks do nothing but dream. The question that many find hard to answer is, how does what I do today tie into my dreams and destiny? When we get caught up in the toils of everyday life, we often find that our awareness is clouded by daily activities. Perhaps it’s hard to see how what we do can have greater meaning and purpose in life, let alone manifest an outstanding destiny. One thing is for sure; deep down we all want our life to mean something. It seems that some find destiny early in life, while others find it later. Some are caught up in basic need to survive, while others stumble right in to living their dream. Many early successes are seen in the performing arts. I’m sure at their early age, Paul McCartney or John Lennon had no clue that playing music would leave such a rich legacy. The lyrics to the song, “Imagine” craft such a beautiful concept of where we could be in this world. The Beatles, to some, were just a longhaired group of teens strumming guitars. But their destiny, found early in life, has left us with a rich heritage of music with deep meaning. Others have found their destiny long after they found success. Oprah Winfrey has always wanted her life to mean something. She has a burning desire to be an inspiration to people and to generously share wealth that has been entrusted to her. As part of that, she has created boys and girls clubs in the town she grew up in, because as a little girl she began dreaming of her own possibilities. Likewise, she has created the Oprah Winfrey Foundations. Ms. Winfrey believes that educational opportunities allow for possibilities to grow. She has given a great deal back to the world and yet, it was when her academy for girls opened in Africa that she felt she met her destiny. Oprah says, “All my adult life I have been searching for a way to give back what I’ve been given. It wasn’t until I fell in love with the beauty and the spirit of people in Africa that the act of giving came full circle for me.” (www.oprah.com). By touching one life it will reproduce itself hundreds of times over. What a wonderful gift to the girls and women of Africa. They are given the opportunity to live the possibilities of their lives through their uplifting and the education they will receive. Another example of how inspiration meets destiny is the story of Jack Canfield, the speaker and author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. Jack states so clearly on the documentary movie, The Secret (www.thesecret.tv) that he discovered through his mentor that he was raised with a very negative viewpoint about money and therefore he, too, had such an attitude. Since we attract what we think about, he was not making money and not allowing his passion in life to develop. He was inspired but, by his own thoughts, getting in the way of his destiny. He learned that whatever a man can conceive, a man can achieve. He decided that he wanted to earn $100,000 in a year. So, thinking he should apply the principle he learned, he created a $100,000 dollar bill and put it over his bed. This way every morning when he awoke and every evening when he retired he would visualize the money coming to him. To some this may seem hokey...but if more people applied the principle, achieving one’s destiny could manifest more quickly. One day, while showering, Jack had an inspired thought. He determined that if he sold 400,000 books at $.25 each, he would earn $100,000 that year. The problem was, he didn’t know how that would happen. But the idea made sense – inspiration! The next day, while grocery shopping, the National Enquirer magazine jumped out at him. Perhaps he could market it there...after all, it was widely read. Shortly thereafter he was giving a talk to teachers. After the talk a woman approached him wanting to interview him. She was a freelance writer for the National Enquirer! The article was published and his books sold. He made almost $100,000 that year. His inspiration met his destiny in the sum of all those events. Jack Canfield’s (www.jackcanfield.com) Chicken Soup for the Soul series has inspired millions to understand that life has meaning at a far deeper level than what we often experience day to day. He has helped many come to understand just how we can achieve rich and meaningful lives showered with success. For me, inspiration and destiny came in an unsuspecting way. Expecting to succeed and manifesting what I wanted never seemed to be hard. I suppose that I was, what some people call, an unconscious competent. That means, I didn’t know how I did what I did, I just did it. Nonetheless, for years I felt that my inspiration and destiny was to create wealth. Having grown up in the projects, early on I didn’t know what wealth was, but I knew that it had to be better than what I had, and I wanted it. While others living in the projects saw their life as a dead-end street with no future, I saw where I was as a stepping-stone to something far better. I knew I was capable and after college strove to be “somebody”. Achieving success legitimately required effort, but was not hard. Unfortunately, patience was not one of my strong suits. Therefore, in a moment of temptation, I made an unethical choice and stole money from one of my clients. Every choice has a consequence. The moment we make the choice the consequence is set into motion. The consequence of that first lapse of ethical judgment and other lapses that followed was Federal prison. It was there, that my destiny was formed and my inspiration was found. Having lost everything, I found, through a simple program that allowed select inmates to speak to youth, that my destiny was to use that experience in a way that could help others see the wisdom of making ethical choices. Today, I speak about choices, the illusion of success and what it means to truly be “somebody”. With the strong push for success that drives corporate America and the need to gain a competitive advantage for our youth, I find that many, both youth and adult, are confused about ethical choices and success. It seems that the two concepts are at odds and many are confused about how to achieve, what I call, “Ethical Success.” As a Sales Executive in a publicly traded company and a keynote speaker, I share programs on issues concerning ethics, the illusion of success, and achieving inspiration and destiny. While my audience is primarily business groups, the Choices Foundation (a non-profit organization) was created to offer the opportunity for youth to hear the same message. Through this organization, I am able to address college and university students, teaching these principles from personal experience. I find this inspiring and my destiny. Destiny has been placed in each and every one of us. It is to fulfill a God-given plan and purpose for our life. Destiny simply put is – "events planned for our life in advance". Will you answer to the call of God or will you let your destiny diminish right before your eyes? It is very sad to see people lost without a sense of direction when you know they were created with a plan and purpose in life. A purpose to assist and help in our society and community that will have an impact on lives. We should be a blessing to someone as we walk this walk of life daily. We are truly to enjoy life without being busted and disgusted. Our life should be enjoyable. Will there be days with challenges? It surely will be. However, what God has placed inside of us surely has a venue of escape. 1 Corinthians 10:13, "No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it." Don't succumb to the negativity of our society. See more than what your natural eye can see. We have to remember everything created was created in the spirit, before manifesting in the natural. Be determined and convinced you will achieve everything you set your mind and hands to do. If you fail, get up and try again. I often share with many people – if it was so easy, everyone would be doing it. If you have a yearning and burning desire to do a particular thing, I can almost assure you it is destiny calling. Will you answer? Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you; says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope." Enjoy your life, enjoy your talent and most of all enjoy your dreams. Refuse to be talked out of you destiny and your dreams. What you were created for is in you and most of the time just need to be tapped into. God is the designer of us all, and believe me the design for you is for you. We have heard this word time and again. Some people believe in it while others don’t. I personally have mixed views with regards this destiny thing. They say that destiny is fate. It is when two people are really meant for each other. It is when something is really for you like maybe a promotion or a new found job. Destiny is when the happenings in your life are defined by predetermined events. So here comes the confusing part. People always say that you determine your life. We were created to be rational beings to make decisions in life if we must. In everything that we do be it as simple as what to wear for work, what to eat for breakfast or may it be a life changing decision that involves choosing who to spend the rest of our life with, the decision lies solely in our very own hands. Our life is like a clean canvass. We decide the colors that go into the canvass. All the good and all the bad that has happened in our lives all have resulted from the decisions that we have made in our lives. But then other people also say that every single event that has happened in our lives has already been arranged in this so called book of life and that this book contains all the events that are supposedly going to happen. Everything happens for a reason, the people we meet along the way, the happiness and joys we may have experience or is yet to experience, the sorrows and heartaches that have yet to dampen our spirits; all will happen at the proper place and the proper time when that supposedly moment or occasion is suppose to happen. So I say to you now. If indeed everything in this world has been predetermined already then why are we given the free will to choose? Do you suppose that despite all the choices we may have made, no matter how hard we try to achieve something it’ll never be within our reach if it is not meant to be a part of our lives? Does our destiny change when we take another course of action, one that is not directed towards what is supposedly to happen? Is what was already written in your so called book of life going to be altered if we try not let destiny have its way? There are so many questions and yet there is no sure shot answer. What matters most for me is that we live everyday of our lives to the fullest not waiting for destiny to come our way. I am not also saying that in one way or another I don’t believe in fate for there are really certain events in my life that I do think fate had something to do with. Just do our thing. Do what you think and feel is right. Everything will just fall into place. |

This month has been like a history lesson for me as I outlined the trail of the past “great ones” in the field of self-improvement. From Russell Herman Conwell’s book “Acres of Diamonds” a generation of self-help gurus sprang up including Og Mandino, Napoleon Hill, Dale Carnegie, W. Clement Stone and Earl Nightingale. These were the founding fathers of self-help. It was Earl Nightingale who said, “It's in your moments of decision that your destiny is created.” Nightingale pioneered the use of electronic media to broadcast self-help material which is partly responsible for the immense success and growth of the multi-million dollar self-help industry that exists today! Who could know? Even Nightingale could not see what hindsight shows us so clearly today that his destiny was indeed created from his moments of decision. I don’t like to use words like destiny too lightly. In this quote Nightingale would have us believe that our destiny is governed totally by our decisions. Other similar quotes have treated the subject of destiny with the same disregard to an eternal principle which says, “...time and unforeseen occurrences befall us all.” (The Bible, Ecclesiastes 9:11) Though I hold the ideas of Earl Nightingale as precious, I would be amiss if I let this one go without some discussion. The plain truth is, in life we are not in total control of our destiny. Other things play a role aside from our decisions. The great proverb says, time and chance happen to us also. Time is the first menaces mentioned. We may have all the desire in the world to accomplish a certain thing; however time may be against us. For example, we may find ourselves all-of-a-sudden imprisoned in a body that is disease ridden. I have a very close friend, a Bishop from my church who was one of the greatest orators and proponents of good will and positive thinking you could ever meet. Two years ago he was stricken with a brain seizure and lost the feeling in the right side of his body and also took his speech away. It was one of the saddest days in our church’s history. But the point I stop to make is this; my Bishop friend might have all the desire in the world to teach and be a great orator and help to educate members of the church, but time in this case prevents him from doing what he decided to do. Perhaps in time, with a lot of physical therapy he may acquire his speech again, but for now it is not possible! The second menace spoken of is unforeseen occurrence (chance). Though the story about my Bishop would work here too, let me drive home the point with a different illustration. I spent the last six years training adults in the welfare-to-work system. Most of my students were women who had children. Most of their relationships happened at a young age, and many of the male partners left their women to bring up their children alone. So here were many women who were stuck. They were now 25 to 30 years old, and they had two children on average and no father at home and more importantly, no support financially. They were expected to go to work and get off of the welfare roles. But let’s remember that they had dreams once. Perhaps dreams to become a dancer, or a teacher, or a medical professional, but they could not finish school. They were stuck. They were imprisoned by “unforeseen occurrences”. In Earl Nightingale’s time, no one heard of DNA . Today we know that DNA can determine a lot about us. It may reveal for instance that we are prone to have certain medical or physical or emotional weaknesses. Our destiny is affected by this. However Nightingale would have been correct if he had said that to a large degree our destinies are controlled by what we decide. It is proper I think to put the greater weight of responsibility on our shoulders which is what Nightingale was trying to emphasize. Humans tend to do the opposite and they try to blame their misfortune on some other outside reasons for failure. They look externally when they should probably be looking internally for reasons they fail. Having a balanced point-of-view about this is important. We could get crushed under the weight of believing that we are solely responsible for our living in poverty or marrying the wrong person or even being born into a dysfunctional family. I know how that can feel. What Nightingale meant was that our moment to moment decisions play a role in shaping our future and knowing this is empowering for it is only when we know this that we can truly begin to change. If we were to believe that our DNA has decided all things for us, than why did God give us a mind and self-will? He obviously wants us to use it to better our lives. We can be set free to some degree of DNA programming just as we can be set free from the cycle of a dysfunctional family, or living in poverty. These are external powers that may seem unyielding, but you and I can change those circumstances with help. Always remember that you have the power within to change. That is the beauty of Nightingale’s message. |

Our Thoughts Determine Our Destiny
Most of what we experience in our lives is a result of our habitual thoughts. Focusing on something increases it in our lives in one way or another. Our emotions are formed out of our thoughts. Thinking about what could go wrong will make us feel worried whether or not anything unfortunate ever takes place. Dwelling on unhappy events in the present or past make them appear closer and more important and habitual thoughts like these can make us depressed. Looking only at our mistakes can make us dislike ourselves and lack confidence, while looking at our successes and talents can make us feel happy and more confident. Habitually thinking enjoyable thoughts of things to look forward to and good things that have happened will lead us to happiness. It is not what has occurred to us that makes our experiences, but rather it is how we choose to interpret those events and where we place most of the emphasis. Everything that we do begins with thought. Henry Ford said, "Whether you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right." Our success in life is built largely on whether or not we expect we will have the abilities we need to accomplish our desires. Even who we are: talented, kind, courageous, etc., or late, selfish, unreliable... is formed by the way we define ourselves in our thoughts and our expectations for our behavior. The luck we find in our lives springs from our thoughts. If we expect bad things, we will notice bad things. If we expect good things, we will find opportunities and good luck. Our moods, our habits, our behavior towards others, our expectations and actions – all these things create our daily experiences and form our destiny. This is why it is so important to train our thoughts on to the positive. Some of us believe that we have full control over our lives. However, this may not be entirely true. Destiny or fate plays a very important role in our lives irrespective of our gender, race, religion, nationality etc. To explain the concept of destiny, we need to understand what destiny is. The popular western view is that we are in control of our lives and everything that happens to us is because of our own choice. On the other hand, the popular eastern view is that not every thing that happens to us is under our control and that we are nothing but puppets in a preordained plan. |

A numerological chart is the easiest occult art to compose and understand. All that is needed to do a full chart is a birth date and a full name (what is listed on the person's birth certificate). The numbers of the birth date are added together and reduced to a single digit (excepting 11 and 22- the master numbers- which are left intact). That number is a person's life path number. For the name, a number is assigned to different letters, added together and reduced to give the Destiny Number. This article details the Destiny Number. |

The Destiny Number in a numerology chart is calculated using a person's full birth name. This is the full name that appears on their birth certificate- unless they were adopted shortly after birth and their name was changed. In that case, the new name can be used. Write out the full name with space below the letters to write the number that corresponds to each. A, J and S are represented by the number 1. B, K and T are represented by the number 2. C, L and U are the number 3. D, M, and V are the number 4. E, N and W are 5. F, O and X are 6. G, P and Y are 7. H, Q and Z are 8. I and R are 9. |

The concept of destiny has fascinated humans since time immemorial. Is our success predestined? Or is it in our hands? Most modern thought has deemed that our endeavor alone determines our success. But with competition intensifying, changes accelerating and many unpredictable and uncontrollable factors determining results in today's complex world, many people are re-examining this belief. For example, a brilliant student, despite diligent studies, gets average marks, whereas a mediocre student, with last-minute cramming, gets high grades. Why? Are we just unwitting players in a cosmic lottery, with chance as the supreme arbiter? Or are results handed down by destiny, under the sanction of a just God? Some people recoil at the very mention of destiny. They fear that lazy people may opportunistically argue, "As the result is predestined, why work hard?" and so become irresponsible and fatalistic. However knowledge of destiny does not justify fatalism because the Mahabharata clarifies, "Destiny determines the results of our actions, not our actions themselves." The Vedic texts explain that these two ideologies, karmavada (endeavor, karma, alone determines success) and daivavada (destiny, daiva, alone determines success) are the two extremes of the pendulum of human imagination. In reality, success requires both endeavor and destiny. For example, in agriculture, a good harvest requires both diligent ploughing and timely rains. Ploughing represents endeavor and rains signify destiny. Despite ploughing, no harvest can result, if there are no rains. Similarly sometimes, despite our best efforts, we may fail, due to adverse destiny. When people are uninformed about the role of destiny in determining results, failures make them feel hopeless, "I am worthless and cannot do anything well", even when they have the potential to perform in the future. Consequently today many of our brothers and sisters are unfortunately and needlessly suffering from mental problems like inferiority complex, low self-esteem, depression and self-pity. Lord Krishna gives us hope in the Bhagavad-gita by pointing out that though we don't determine the result, we do play a significant role. Going back to the farmer analogy, the farmer must plough the field for favorable rainfall to produce crops. Similarly we must endeavor for destiny to produce results. Hence the Gita urges us to perform our God-given duty without attachment. We need detachment because our material happiness and distress in this life are predestined by our own karma from past lives. We cannot change them no matter how hard we work. But by doing our present duties industriously and honestly, we can get our destined happiness. Also we can make for ourselves a bright future destiny, even if our present is bleak. Moreover, even at present, destiny limits only our material happiness, not our spiritual happiness. All of us have equal and complete opportunity to awaken our dormant love for God and experience oceanic happiness thereof. This supreme fulfillment is available at our tongue tips, just by the chanting of the Holy Names of God, Krishna. In the spiritual world the Absolute is always absolute; the name, form, quality and pastimes of the Absolute are all as good as the Absolute Himself. As such, one is understood to be an eternal servant of the Supreme Personality of Godhead if he considers himself an eternal servant of the holy name and in this spirit distributes the holy name to the world. One who chants in that spirit, without offenses, is certainly elevated to the platform of understanding that the holy name and the Personality of Godhead are identical. To associate with the holy name and chant the holy name is to associate with the Personality of Godhead directly. Whatever instruments we need to chant names of God are already provided, no one has to purchase a tongue. We also have ears with which to hear the sound that the tongue vibrates. Therefore we have all the instruments we need with us -- a tongue and ears. We only have to chant Hare Krsna and use our ears to hear this vibration, and all perfection will be there for us. No inimical destiny can obstruct us in achieving divine bliss; rather when we take one step towards God, He takes a thousand steps towards us. Even a little spiritual dynamism brings enormous returns. And as we are intrinsically spiritual beings and as our lasting satisfaction comes from spiritual devotion, we can rejoice in knowing that our real happiness is not destined, but is in our own hands. Hence intelligent people are cautious to not let over-endeavor for flickering material aggrandizement deprive them of the time and energy to strive for lasting spiritual enlightenment. Let us therefore do our best (materially and spiritually) and leave the rest (to God faithfully). |

Fate, destiny, and resignation – they all appear to be synonyms up to a certain point but, what if your entire life you’ve been a fighter and simply refuse to surrender in a certain situation? Can we rebel against our own destiny? Can we truly decide the path that we are going to take in life? Change from our introspections? These are all questions with no definite or final answer, but nevertheless, everything related to this matter also depends on our determination, our strength to defeat the obstacles we meet before reaching the ultimate aspiration. A lot of people, who have been remarkably good at doing something during their lives, including business, sports, science etc, confess that fate seemed to be against them at the beginning and even throughout their career. Most of them lived completely different lives before being successful and they are proud to remember those times. It was indeed hard, most of them say, but they wanted to get to the top badly; nothing could have held them back from getting where they wanted. They also admit that they never dared to dream they would be so famous or successful in the future. All these facts make us wonder, whether an apparently pre-established destiny can be modified or completely changed, if we manage to prove we really want something and we are determined to go all the way to get it, no matter what. And if we indeed can change fate, to whom should we demonstrate what we’re capable of? Could there be a way to modify the data, which composes the famous book of life, just as easy as correcting something on a computer? And if that is true, how do we know that there wasn’t a mistake in the first place, and our determination does not do more than correct it? Obviously, all that was presented before represents suppositions, nevertheless, since there are different people who testify that their lives changed, this increases our confidence that we can do it too. If we can’t control our destiny, we can, at least, contribute to what’s happening to us during our existence. Maybe, although we were supposed to have a less fortunate destiny, if we treat others the right way, if we are always honest and always mind the truth, somehow bad fate will go around us, showing us that we can make our own destiny. On the other hand, we cannot help wondering what happens to a person who starts off with a wonderful destiny, but during his or her life commits a series of unpardonable mistakes. Will that destiny change? Could it be true that we actually get the destiny we deserve? Persons who suffer tremendously for having lost somebody dear to them or persons born with a disease or a handicap, will answer no! There are a lot of innocent people in pain, so the theory that we get what we deserve is not always accurate. But what if we have to pay for the errors others committed? Would that make us think deeper before carrying out something we are not really proud of, fearing that some innocent human being will pay, in the future, for our present actions? There is no doubt that opinions are split when it comes to such a subject. However, meditating on this kind of themes helps us understand ourselves better and, hopefully, gets us closer to appreciating our fate and destiny.
