Autumnal Crafts

Some people associate autumn with the “death” of summer. I see it as a gorgeous, vibrant, colorful time where fiery reds, oranges, and yellows compete for our attention. Crisp wind lively plays among the fallen leaves. Warm cocoa and crackling fires chase away the cold at night. Fall is my favorite season, can you tell? Thanksgiving is a great time for homeschoolers to dust off the old craft supplies. Although the traditional turkey hand tracing can be loads of fun, there’s so much more fun to be had. Why not try a turkey greeter or bouquet of thanks? There’s tons of fun autumnal crafts begging to be made at Kaboose. Click around to find them.
Thanksgiving List

It might seem obvious, but the main objective this Thanksgiving season should be to actually give thanks. It’s sad how distracting our lives can be, that we forget to remember how blessed we are. There are many ways to show gratitude to our Lord and Savior this season. You can spread paper across any surface, a table, refrigerator, or wall. Then, equip your homeschoolers with crayons. Each day, have them add something for which they are thankful to the list. On Thanksgiving, you can have each child read his or her contributions aloud in order to share them with the rest of the homeschool family. You can cut out leaves in construction paper instead of writing on a list or draw pictures instead of writing out words. Be creative!

Leafy Fun

For most families, fall means leaf-raking time. Have your homeschoolers help out with the lawn care this year by making it family endeavor. Let them run around and jump in the leaves. At night, you can even burn up the leaves in a brilliant bonfire. Don’t forget to bring the hot cider and hot chocolate!

Family Football

For a lot of dads, Thanksgiving is a time to settle down in the living room and stretch out for a few hours of quality football. Don’t just watch football this year. Get outside and get that blood pumping! It will be a great opportunity to throw the pigskin around with your family. You can even plan for a halftime mini-game, inviting other homeschooling families in the neighborhood.

Play a Thanksgiving Party Game

Think about ways to attribute Thanksgiving imagery to existing games. Consider Mayflower Memory:

Everyone sits in a circle. The first player says, “I am sailing on the Mayflower and I am taking Apples. The next player repeats the phrase, only instead of apples, thinks of something that begins with the letter “B”. The game continues this way until players can no longer think of words. If a player can’t contribute an item, he or she must leave the circle. The last person in the circle wins!

Use your imagination! Give Duck Duck Turkey a try!

Halloween Crafts

The only bad Halloween craft project is the Halloween craft project that takes too long. You know the ones. The craft projects that have so many steps that you’ve lost the attention of your kids before step 2. Give these easy Halloween craft ideas a try. They’re short; they’re sweet; they’re fun and the end results are spooktacular.

Antenna Characters
These adorable characters look great at the top of your automobile antenna. Hey, if your house is dressed up for Halloween, why shouldn’t your car? With various Halloween-themed colors of flat fun foam (orange, black, white, green), draw a light outline of a pumpkin, ghost, spider or Frankenstein head, approximately 4-inches tall and 3-inches wide. Cut out the shapes and with a single hole punch, punch two holes in each shape, one approximately one inch from the top of the shape and another hole approximately one inch from the bottom of the shape.

With glitter glue or permanent markers, decorate the shape with facial features, an outline or anything you’d like. Allow to dry thoroughly. Once dried, you can attach to your automobile antenna by placing the antenna through the bottom hole from the back of the shape to the front. Then place the antenna through the top hole, front to back. The Antenna Character should be secure and should withstand normal driving conditions.

Halloween Mosaics
Mosaic art using tiles is very popular nowadays. Kids can duplicate this popular craft using construction paper instead of tiles or glass.

Prior to gathering the children around the table, cut small squares of various colors of paper, orange, red, blue, yellow, white, black, green, etc.

On a piece of heavy stock, white paper, draw the outline of a pumpkin, Frankenstein or other Halloween character.

With a small dab of all-purpose glue on the back of each square, kids can mosaic their way to a uniquely creative masterpiece that can be framed and hung on the wall for many Halloween seasons to come.

Pumpkin Painting
In less than one hour, you and your child can create the most adorable pumpkin craft ready to proudly display in your home. Pumpkin Painting is the perfect activity for little goblins who aren’t old enough to handle the jack-o-lantern carving duties.

With simple supplies like acrylic paints, markers, newspaper and sealer, kids can paint whimsical, silly faces on their pumpkins. Or they can paint their favorite cartoon character, Halloween motif or harvest design. Painted pumpkins do not rot near as quickly as carved pumpkins so it is much more economical to paint pumpkins rather than carving them and it’s also much safer and more hands-on for toddlers since there is no knife involved.

Traditional Handprint Crafts

Traditional handprint crafts are a fun way to preserve memories of your baby. All you need to make traditional handprint crafts are some easily available craft items and loads of imagination. Crafters have used these methods and variations of them for centuries.

You can put your 's handprints on ceramic tiles, clay, fabric or paper.

You can use colored paper to make traditional handprint crafts. For this you need paper plates or bright yellow and orange colored paper, scissors, gum, markers and wobbly eyes or nose if you so desire. Cut out the inner circle for the sun and trace the 's hands on to the colored paper for the rays of sunshine. Trace the handprints a number of times on the yellow and orange paper, cut them out, and then stick them alternately on to the inner circle. Make a face with the marker, stick the eyes, and nose to complete the face of Mr. Sunshine.

To Make traditional handprint crafts on ceramic tiles, you need an unglazed tile of 4" or 6" depending on the size of the hand, a soft brush, a pot of ceramic under glaze in a dark color, a container of clear glaze, sponge, and tissues to clear the mess. You can get all these materials at your local hobby center and order the tiles beforehand, as they may not be available singly.

Clean the tile with a wet sponge and wash the 's hands with soap and dry well. Paint a single coat of glaze across the palm and keep the fingers apart so that the fingerprints appear on the tile. Ensure that the hands are steady and then gently press the palm and fingers for the full hand impression. To commemorate this event, paint your 's name and date of birth alongside the handprint. Next, you must let the tile dry and then fire it before you put a coat of clear glaze. Your traditional handprint crafts are now ready for display.

Other traditional handprint crafts include casting the 's handprint in plaster. For this smear, some oil on the 's hand so that the plaster does not stick to the skin. Next, put the hand in the plaster in a container or a tray and press it gently so that the full imprint appears. Remove the hand and clean it thoroughly of plaster.

You can carve in the 's name and birth date in the wet plaster before it sets. Use your creativity to beautify the traditional handprint crafts with accessories. You can insert a straw in the wet plaster so that you can insert a ribbon and create a wall hanging out of your 's handprints. Once the plaster sets remove it from the container and it is ready to put on show.

Traditional handprint crafts can add a twist to your Halloween decorations. You can trace out the handprints on green paper and cut them out. Make them more frightful by adding pointy fingernails or a blood trail. Stick them behind doors to scare your friends. You can use other variations of this idea by using glitter and other dreadful colors. Thus, traditional handprint crafts can make a great memento for your child when he grows up.

Ancient Roman crafts

In the second millennium BC, the Romans emerged from a small settlement near Rome to begin a course of expansion that was to make them the dominant power in the Mediterranean. By the 1st Century AD, Roman territories expanded from Britain in the north to Egypt in the south. Much of the Roman culture and crafts reflected the preceding Hellenistic period; however, their extensive trade network provided them with a great variety of materials. Artisans often combined styles and materials creating their own unique designs. Terracotta (baked clay) pottery was made and used throughout the middle east and was produced in the earliest settlements along the Fertile Crescent where the clay was abundant and varied in color. The early potters had ample resources with which to experiment, create and develop their styles. The pottery was made as a fairly course, porous clay that when fired, assumes a color ranging from dull ochre to red and was usually left unglazed. Most terracotta pottery has been utilitarian because of its cheapness, versatility and durability. As technique and firing methods improved, a great variety of shapes evolved. The most widely utilized pottery in the Ancient World was oil lamp, bottles, unguentariums, pitchers, bowls and plates, their basic shapes remaining unchanged for over a thousand years and still being used in today's modern world. The oil lamp was the source of light in every household, the bottles and pitchers were used to store wine, water and other liquids, the unguentarium held oils, spices, unguents and balm and the bowls and plates were used to eat from and hold food stuffs. The amphora, classic in shape, was used for storage and shipping in the ancient world and was meant for household use and to hold wine, oil, spice or unguents.

The Bronze Age was an important element in time even thought not any particular period of time. Some areas had their Bronze Age early, others had it late. The primary function of any metal industry in antiquity was the production of weapons and tools. A spear point was ranked as the chief weapon used in the battle of ancient Asia and Europe. The famous Greek poet, Homer, tells how Achilles speared Hector with a bronze pole. Ancient Roman spear points have played an important part in history. Early men tied jagged pieces of stone onto their throwing sticks until they learned to shape pointed spearheads from pieces of flint. In the 2nd millennium BC, the Romans emerged from a small settlement near Rome. By the 1st Century AD, Roman territories expanded from Britain in the north to Egypt in the south. The Roman army was originally made up of citizens. By Caesar's time, in the 40's BC, most soldiers were professionals in a standing army, forming a civilizing force as well as a conquering one.

Card Making

To become a good card making expert you need to have a creative and patient nature, it is a very precise art to undertake, below please find some tips. http://www.diyconservatories-and-windows.co.uk/

Tips:

• Keep scare cuttings from newspapers, magazines, crap paper etc, these will come in useful when you decide to start making cards, for example, you could get a lot of kitten and animal photos that could be cut out for the use of card making.

• Try to collect cut out punches so that you always have them at hand if you wish to create a certain shape, you can find the best deals on websites online or if you go to card boot sales, there are often craft stores which offer a huge saving on RRP rates.

• Always write down the plan of your card before you make it, this can avoid the mistakes usually made without planning, you are also able to be more creative with your designs and get the items needed to complete it.

• Get specialist plastic bags to place your cards within once drying to ensure that none of the items fall off your card, these can also be helpful if you plan to sell your cards, this will keep them safe and dust free.

• You get items such as flowers quite a lot, these can be useful, dry them out and then you will be able to use them within your card designs and make them look good.

• Get sticky sheets to ensure that you are able to create 3d effects with your images, as well as have the sticky tabs it is best to have something to go around the edges such as glitter to make it look flashier.

• Try to theme your cards if you aren’t planning on selling them, for example one of your relatives or someone in your family may be interested in a certain film, you could print off a picture and then get an embossing kit to make the image more 3d.

• Try to alternate between shapes with cards such as curvy tops to make it more presentable to the public if they are to be sold.

• Birthday Cards – for young people these should be colourful for example orange and pink is a good colour for birthday cards, or for older people light blues and purples are good colours.

• Valentines Cards – Obviously red is a good colour for love, to go with red you could use white or pink, also I find black is a good colour to contrast with the red.

• Christmas Cards – These usually use pastel colours to make it more calming.

Arts And Crafts Idea

Crafters are able to come up with arts and crafts ideas from items that many people might consider junk! Arts and crafts ideas can be found in baby food jars, paper bags, shoe boxes, cds, and egg cartons among other items easily found around the home. When you come up with arts and crafts ideas from things you have in your home, you save money on having to purchase supplies from the craft store, and you are helping the environment by recycling.

Shoe boxes are the culprits of many arts and crafts ideas! You can create dioramas, doll houses, and box guitars. The arts and crafts ideas using shoe boxes are virtually endless- limited only by your imagination. You can also use shoe boxes for more traditional means, and create decorative storage boxes for your favorite things, momentos or other objects.

CD's are also great items to encourage arts and crafts ideas. They are perfectly round, and give off a wonderful shine when light hits them. The little hole in the center is perfect for stringing twine or chain through, in order to create hanging arts and crafts. Ideas include Christmas ornaments, candle holders, dreamcatchers, photo frames, clocks and magnets. Start with a CD you don't need (like the ones you get in the mail from advertisers, or a CD that has too many scratches to work properly) and see just how many arts and crafts ideas the little shiny circle can generate!

Clear thirty five millimeter film cannisters can cause many arts and crafts ideas. With a little mirrored paper board (available at a craft store), plastic wrap and cake sprinkles you can make a miniature kaleidoscope. Drill a small hole in the bottom of the film cannister. Fold the mirrored paper board into a triangle shape that will fit inside the cannister, and tape it inside. Place several cake sprinkles in the lid of the cannister and cover with a piece of plastic wrap, taped into place. Pop the cap back onto the cannister. When you look through the hole at the bottom of the cannister and turn the film cannister in your hand, the sprinkles will create shapes against the mirrored kaleidoscope. How is that for unique arts and crafts ideas!

Arts and crafts ideas can come from anywhere. You can recycle your empty jelly jars and make beach scenes in a jar, a time capsule, or a candle holder.

Common household items often invoke many arts and crafts ideas. Just think outside the box, and you might surprise yourself with how many arts and crafts ideas you come up with!

Bonding Through Arts And Crafts

Home Family/Parenting 2007-10-01
View Detail
Arts and crafts are one of the simplest ways to bond with your children, family, friends, and students. They are easy and fun to make and will not cost you very much at all, especially if you are using everyday household objects. Plus, there are all sorts of occasions to get out your glitter and scissors, including birthdays and holidays.

If you are a parent looking for creative things to do with your children, arts and crafts can be the answer to your question. By using old tin cans or recycled newspapers, or even buying craft materials, you can let your kid express his or her creativity with you. Things like painting flower pots together, for instance, can create keepsakes for years to come.

Daycare centers always seem to be in need of new and cheap arts and crafts ideas. Giving kids the chance to work on crafts together can let them bond and form life long friendships at an early age. Young children may also learn about many things through crafts without being forced to sit through a class, and this makes the learning more interesting.

If you are a teacher looking for ways to reward your students or just give them something to do, arts and crafts can fill that time. Students like having a bit of down time between lessons. Arts and crafts will let them take a break while still being productive. There are tons of educational crafts out there such as building bridges out of toothpicks. After they have been built you can test to see which bridges can hold the most pennies. This is an excellent tie-in to basic physics and architectural design. Heirloom Arts And Crafts Projects

Some of the Arts and Crafts projects that people choose to complete will make a memorable impression on someone many years from now. The heirloom Arts and Crafts projects are usually completed using techniques that were developed a hundred years ago, or are those that create an article that can be handed down from generation to generation.

Some of the heirloom Arts and Crafts projects that people will attempt may require classes to do them properly. There are many heirloom Arts and Crafts projects that can be created using quilting techniques that were passed on from aged grandparents. Techniques such as hand appliqués and joining blocks to form a quilt top and quilt back will require the crafter to use heirloom patterns and a variety of stitches. The heirloom Arts and Crafts projects that turn into quilts are always stitched by hand and never by a sewing machine.

Many Mothers will create heirloom Arts and Crafts projects for every child that they have. For a male child, the Mother might choose to create a shadow box that contains a copy of a birth certificate and the first pair of baby booties that the child wore. Another Arts and Crafts project for the child might also contain the parts to a fishing pole that the child used to catch their first fish.

Some crafters create family genealogy charts out of fabric and give these heirloom Arts and Crafts projects to their first born child when they buy their first home. The reflection on family history in the new home will serve as a lasting reminder to the child on how much they are loved by the people that are closest to them.

Some children will create heirloom Arts and Crafts projects by taking jewelry making classes at the local university. By creating unique pieces of jewelry, they are in fact, creating a lasting reminder of their craftiness which people in the family unit can savor long after they are grown. The jewels for these pieces will be extra special when they are found on special shopping trips for just that purpose.

Some heirloom Arts and Crafts projects can be completed by a grandfather and given to all of the grandchildren. There are many furniture pieces that can be cut and constructed as a labor of love, and the furniture pieces will eventually turn into heirloom Arts and Crafts projects that future generations can use over and over again. Some of these heirloom Arts and Crafts projects might be a table and bench set or the Arts and Crafts project could be a handheld toy that any toddler would love to own.

Finding Simple Country Crafts

Country crafts have been popular across the country for many years. There is a certain quality about things that fit into the country style that just connects with people. There are few things that can make a person feel quite as at home as a simple piece of artwork or a little trinket that gives a place a country atmosphere. Many such items can be purchased for relatively little money, and many times it does not take much to create the welcoming atmosphere you want. Country crafts can easily act simply as accent pieces, or become a theme unto themselves, depending entirely on how far you want to go with them.

There are a number of places in which you can find country crafts of all types and at all prices. For instance, craft supply stores will often sell some amount of pre-made crafts. These will usually do well enough as small elements, but generally are not the best of choices as a larger, focus piece, as the fact that you found them in a craft store will probably be a bit obvious in many cases if it draws too much attention. However, these are often very inexpensive and can sometimes be used as part of something larger.

Usually the more promising prospects are things such as art fairs and craft shows. Now, the price of the items available at these shows will vary greatly, usually based upon how prestigious the given show is. Of course, going to a big, high-name show will often mean you will not have to wade through poorly made items in your search for high quality country crafts. You will, however, most likely pay for that convenience.

Your best bet is to work your way through as many different shows as possible, to give yourself the best chance of finding what you need. Remember also that as a rule at most craft fairs and art shows, hesitation is not a great plan. This is not to say you should not shop around at all, but if you see something you like, try not to wait. Once something sells, it is entirely possible that there are no other items of its kind, and you may never be able to find it again. While this can be a bit troublesome at times, it is one of the inherent problems of handcrafted merchandise such as the things you normally find at craft shows.

Lastly, the Internet can also be an excellent way to find the country crafts you need. The problem with the Internet, of course, is that it is difficult to tell quite what sort of quality the items you are working with are from just seeing them on a web page. This said, a little bit of careful shopping and sometimes a willingness to take a gamble on an item can lead you to some great deals on country crafts for your home. The Internet is also an excellent place to find instructions on how to make crafts of your own, if you would like to undertake that adventure.

Children Crafts Are Kids Play

Candice Sabrina Arts Entertainment/Arts Entertainment 2008-05-04
View Detail
Rainy days and summer vacations always cause mothers and teachers a moment of dismay. How to entertain the children if they can't go outside and play? Better yet, what kinds of children crafts will help to break up a day filled with lesson plans, errands and other responsibilities?

Children crafts are as varied as the types of children they're meant to entertain. For younger kids, crayons, coloring books and plastic figurines will keep kids busy for hours, but many parents and teachers prefer a more 'hands-on' approach to crafts.

In the old days, our parents made us play clay out of flour, salt and water. That was great stuff, but today, Play Doh is more popular than ever and is a cheap craft that kids from 2 to 10 will enjoy playing with. Many of these types of dough, including sculpturing clay, will allow children to create animals, monsters and anything in between.

Children crafts can be created with simple ingredients like paper, glue, scissors and crayons or markers. Designing cards, masterpieces or just scribbling will keep various age groups entertained, and only imagination is the limit to what children can produce if given the opportunity.

Watercolors and paintbrushes are also a favorite with kids, and finger-painting is still as popular as it was thirty or forty years ago. If you don't want the mess of paints, crayons or markers, try beads, yarn and plastic needles to help your kids create construction paper animals or pockets for letters, chores or homework assignments.

Children crafts are an important part of your child's life and help to encourage creativity and ingenuity. There are no right or wrong crafts to choose for kids, other than making sure that they are age appropriate. Younger children may need supervision and help at times, but older children are fine in creating and designing things out of whatever craft supplies you have on hand.

A child, a box and a box of crayons can be turned into fun children crafts when making spaceships or forts, and encouraging children to use their imagination provides ample stimulation for their creativity. Lacing beads, yarns and glues and old socks can be turned into animals that will delight your children and give them a sense of pride and accomplishment when they see what they can create from a few spare parts.

Children love to draw, and large pads of drawing paper placed on an easel will provide ample opportunities for your child to discover the joys of pencil, crayon, marker, watercolors and paints. Remember, even Michelangelo had to start somewhere!

No matter that type of children crafts you choose, make sure that floor space is protected to eliminate stress for already busy Mom's and Dad's, and that any craft supplies that you have gathered for your children are age appropriate. Offering praise, even if you don't know what you're looking at when your child shows you his or her masterpiece, is a great way to instill confidence and pride in accomplishment with children.
