Business Cost Savings Through Safety

Business Cost Savings Through Safety

Setting a health and safety program in place will reduce costs. Having a program will reduce accidents and will lead to lower company worker’s comp premiums; further business insurance companies prefer their customers to have health and safety programs. These insurance companies might even discount the premium if a program can be proved to exist. The average cost of an accident is $68,000. Direct costs in accidents such as worker’s comp and fines levied can close a business. Indirect costs such as low morale of employees, legal fees, and retraining can be as costly if not more.

A working program will:
1) Improve employee morale – Shows care in their well being
2) Reduce revenue loses – Fewer accidents keeps all employees at work
3) Give a boost to the customer – Makes sure business is operating optimally

Small businesses that have a voluntary health and safety program in place have fifty percent less accidents and reported insurance claims than that of their counterparts according to OHSA stats. Most small businesses fall below the legal requirements for having a formal health and safety program in place due to number of employees on staff. Sixty eight percent of reported accidents are in the service industry which shows even businesses such as retail establishments are not free of accidents.

A health and safety program can be started by writing a health and safety policy; this is simply values that a company wishes to convey in its work processes. Secondly, is how communication between all employees and owners will function. And lastly, put procedures in place to ensure safe practices.

To find unseen hazards and unsafe practices, an audit needs to take place. Take a hard look at the workplace and record all factors that may lead to injury. These hazards might be dangerous chemicals or as simple as a letter opener. Identifying these hazards will lead to procedures to controlling them. Controls such as “Don’t run with scissors in your hands” are effective. Write all procedures in a manual.

Implementing these health and safety procedures will be done with behavioral change. Some programs become weak and non effective because of:
1) No definition of safety practices – No written processes
2) No teamwork – Safety is communication from the top to bottom and vice versa. A well written plan will describe what roles everyone plays in safety policies.
3) No effective goals – The “accident free days” poster will come as a result of sound safety processes.
4) Wrong incentives – Money as a reward does not work well. Health and safety should be fun and worth employees effort. The right incentive plan can be cost effective and have obtainable goals. Incentive plans can include movie passes or simply “free coffee on the boss.” The insurance industry reports for a dollar spent on health and safety yields four to six dollars in savings.

Once all of the hard work of developing and implementing the health and safety program is done, set aside some time each month to review the workplace. Record what is found; this is a good practice to see dangerous trends that might occur such as a fire exit constantly being blocked. On the quarters of the year post a meeting with employees. These meetings are a great way to get vital feed-back from employees and keep them involved. At least once a year, do an audit to make sure your health and safety program is current with present business operations.

More European Cost Savings

Ofcom have already forced mobile networks to reduce the cost to make and receive a call while in the EU making going abroad much cheaper. The calling costs are now capped at 28 pence for a call made in the EU back to the United Kingdom, and 19 pence to receive a call while in an EU country.

Last year the European Telecom Commissioner stated that she would impose a similar cap on data roaming costs if operators did not start lowering their costs. Cutting the cost of wholesale data is the first step, once enough operators are on board then consumer costs will drop – hopefully to a flat rate cost throughout the EU.

So five operators over Europe have joined together to agree a new wholesale rate. The operators, including 3, KPN and Base cover 10 European markets, over 60% of the European Union. As of March 1st the new agreed rate between the five operators will be 0.25 Euros, or 19 pence per MB.

So fingers crossed this will be the start of lower data roaming rates across Europe.

Shipping Cost Savings Goldmine Management Tips

Daryl Cowie Business/Business 2008-04-25
View Detail
Packaging, shipping and handling costs represent a large portion of variable business costs and are often overlooked by inexperienced planners. As a result in many businesses this presents a fabulous opportunity to make changes that will have an immediate and noticeable effect.

When asked what it costs to provide a product most people add up the pieces and give you the total. If we make toasters, we say the cost of the toaster is one cover, 2 elements, a spring mechanism, power cord, thermostat and 14 screws: $10.

A slightly more experienced manager will tell you the cost of that same product is labor plus materials. Your toaster now costs $10 for all the materials, and 20 minutes to assemble at $15 per hour. $10 + $5 = $15. That’s a 50% increase. If you manufacture 1 million toasters every year, that's a jump from $10 million to $15 million dollars in your calculated costs.

What so many business managers fail to include in their costs is that the toaster goes in a box with an instruction manual, and has to be sent from your factory to the store across the country. That toaster may cost $15 to build, but the cost of getting a toaster on the shelf in a store is $15 plus a box, plus an instruction manual, plus a crate, plus someone to put a load of toasters in that crate, plus the cost of shipping itself. On many products the box required to ship a product safely costs more than the product inside. For many mass produced products packaging normally costs more than the product itself.

So how is it that shipping and handling cost so much, and yet get overlooked by so many business managers? We just don’t think about it. It's a line on a balance sheet somewhere that most of us never get to see. It's accepted as a normal cost of business and it doesn't sound very exciting to go and fix.

But let me tell you what is exciting. Walking into your boss's office and telling him or her you've found a way to save the company thousands of dollars by bumping up your shipment sizes, changing to a less expensive cardboard box, or predicting shipment needs in advance and shipping in 2 weeks by sea instead of 2 days by air. All of these are relatively easy changes to make if the right questions are asked. Unfortunately most managers don’t even know what the cost of shipping and handling is.

So don't overlook your packaging, shipping and handling costs. They all play a part in the cost of doing business. If you don’t know what your business shipping and handling costs are, go find out. Then walk over to the loading bay and ask someone to show you what they have to do to get something ready to ship. You might be amazed at the inefficiencies you find, and more than likely the packers and shippers themselves already have a long list of solutions for savings locked away simple because no one has ever bothered to ask them.

Shipping and handling cost savings are a potential goldmine for managers looking to make their mark. They are expensive. They happen all the time. There are often overlooked. They are an opportunity. My management tip for you is to go seize that opportunity and make a difference. Daryl Cowie has shared management tips with 1000s of people in over 30 countries around the world. Low Cost Dental Savings For You

Don Robertson Business/Medical Business 2007-05-07
View Detail

Low cost dental today, for many, has become a misnomer. Many people find that the luxury benefits, low cost dental, vision, prescription and chiropractic, are disappearing from their group policies.

The average business today is finding it increasingly difficult to provide low cost dental benefits. When costs begin to cut into business profits the benefit disappears. It is becoming more the responsibility of the individual to provide dental and other luxury benefits for the family.

One of the disappointing limits of dental insurance is the yearly spending cap (some group plans even have a lifetime cap). An average dental insurance policy will run anywhere from $30 per month to as much as $60 per month. Here is where the magic begins for the insurance company. First, they are betting that you won t use your benefits. In that case they have a resulting profit of $360 ($30 x 12 mo) up to $720 ($60 x 12 mo) for the year. But then there is a cap or spending limit placed on your policy for the calendar year. The cap is usually around $1000.

Now here is a little calculating. If your cap is $1000 and you are paying $30 per month or $360 per year then you are subsidizing your dental plan to the amount of your premium--$360. Subtract the $360 from the $1000 and you actually have a $640 amount available to you for the calendar year. Now what if your premium is $720 per year? That would mean that you had subsidized all but $280 of your dental work for the year.

What if you need several crowns or root canals? Sorry, you have that cap to think about. You can certainly exceed the limit, but then you are on your own. Now you are paying the full price that can be very scary. Your reserve cash, if you have any, can be siphoned off very quickly.

So how much do dental procedures cost today? They vary with the area of the United States that you live in. According to the National Dental Advisory Service you can expect to pay $1192 for a crown in the Dallas area. For a root canal the investment, depending on the type of tooth, anterior or bicuspid, is between $788 and $901. Of course if you have children or you need Orthodontic treatment yourself you can expect to pay between $4,500 and $5,000. Now those are some hefty investments that reduce your spendable income at a dizzying rate.

Are options available to save you money on your dental needs? Yes there are. One of the options that some people take advantage of, if they have major work being done, is to go out of the country. Mexico is certainly an option. India is another option. That may sound ridiculous, but consider that major dental work may be needed. The can easily exceed $10,000. If your vacation was $2000 and your dental work another $3000, then you have gone on a vacation and saved money. Although I must admit that going to the dentist while I m on vacation is certainly not my idea of having fun. But it is an option.

Another option is sitting down with your dentist and explaining that you don t have insurance or your insurance will not cover all of the work that is needed. It is always a good plan to discuss large outlays with your dentist. You will then know exactly what the charges will be for each procedure. During this discussion, get the plan written down and insure that it includes your dental codes. It will make it easier to track later and should the need arise you will be able to compare apples to apples. Quite often, your dentist will be able to discount some of the procedure costs. But this won t happen unless you ask.

Today, though dental costs have risen drastically for the consumer, there is some good news. As we all know, when there is a need a solution will come along. One of the shinning solutions of dental care today is the low cost dental discount plan.

The dental discount plan provides individuals or complete households with dental saving membership plans. These membership plan monthly fees are low enough to allow any level income to take part. These plans are much like having a Sam's or Costco card. When you use your card at Sam's or Costco, you save money. Because you save money you use your card and keep it. That is what is happening in the dental industry today.

With your dental discount card you have pre-established discounts when you go to the dentist. These discounts can range from twenty percent all the way up to eighty percent. I ll give you a couple of examples of savings from one of the discount plan providers. In the Dallas area, a periodic oral exam is normally $60. With the low cost dental discount plan it would be only $12 which would provide you with a savings of 80%. If you had to have a porcelain crown which is normally $1192 retail, with the discount plan it would be only $525. That would be a savings of $667 or 56%.

Dental discount plans are definitely here to stay. You can realize major savings using them. The better ones also provide additional benefits for free--such as vision, prescription and chiropractic. With just a little research, you can find a plan that is right for you, save money and insure that you and your family s dental health are secure.

So let s recap the three methods discussed for saving you money.
1) Go out of the country. This is certainly feasible if you have the time and inclination to do so.
2) Sit down with your dentist and work out a discount plan with him personally.
3) Enroll in a low cost dental discount plan.

Which one of these three is right for you? That is your decision. I personally am on a dental discount plan that has save me a lot of money. But the decision is ultimately yours. Just understand that low cost dental is available for you and your family if you are willing to take responsibility, research your options and exercise due diligence.

My hope for you is that you will find the plan that is right for you. So that instead of having more month at the end of the money you will now have more money at the end of the month and you will be able to enjoy your family s health and confidence.

Cost Savings Tips For Sanibel Island Vacation Rentals

Promise Keeper Travel Leisure/Travel Tips 2007-09-27
View Detail
As we all know, accommodations are one of the most important aspects of your trip. Sanibel Island, Florida has many different types of places to stay that will fit whatever needs you may have. We've also included a few cost saving tips to aid in your decision making.

If this trip is to be a romantic getaway for your honeymoon, or even for a 'just because we want to" then check out the Seaside Inn. It consists of well appointed cottages that will allow you the privacy you desire for a little rest and relaxation with your spouse. Another great romantic option is the Waterside Inn on the Beach. It has recently been refurbished and boasts a great honeymoon suite (you can always have a second honeymoon, or third, or fourth...you get the picture). Seahorse Cottages are another great option of a romantic place to stay as well.

For families, the Tortuga Beach Club Resort is always a good bet since it boasts one of the largest pools on the island and has most of the amenities you need (microwave, pots, pans, oven, refrigerator, etc.) for a great family vacation -- so you won't have to eat out for every meal! Some other family friendly places to stay on Sanibel Island are The Sanibel Inn, Sunset Beach Resort, and Beachview Cottages.

One other option you may want to look into when planning your trip is a condo rental instead of a hotel room during your stay -- especially if you have children. Sand Pointe Condominiums has many of the amenities you need to make your stay feel like a home away from home. Some condo rental units include a washer and dryer and its location is very close to the beach -- both of which are great for families. Sanibel Siesta Condominiums are also a good choice -- they are two bedroom two bath units with a pool and stocked kitchens (with equipment, not food).

Bear in mind that if you choose the condo rental path to check the terms carefully. Sometimes there are clauses that will prevent you from getting your rental deposit back, or if there is no time to for the place to find a replacement for you, you may still be responsible for the entire rental payment. If there is any uncertainty in being able to make the trip, it may be best to forgo this option -- even if it is a great place to stay and fits all of your needs.

A few money saving tips for you to use while on your trip... Try to bring a few things from home like coffee and snack food (i.e. cereal bars, granola bars, crackers, etc.). Snacks and drinks can really add up and if you bring a small stash for you and your family, you can avoid the possibility of getting ripped off and pay $3 for a bag of chips. If you are staying in a condo, try to stock up at a local grocery store on foods you and your family will eat for lunch and dinner so you won't have to eat out every night. Hotels that offer free breakfasts can also help offset the cost of your stay if you can get up early enough to enjoy it.

Another tip is to travel during the off season. You can save a pretty penny on your vacation rental if you go to Sanibel Island between mid-August and October.

Finally, negotiate, negotiate, negotiate... You will be surprised at how much money you can save by doing this, especially if the unit you are interested in is ocean-view (not ocean front) or has no view at all. There are usually more of these types of lodging available and the rental companies, hotels and resorts are always eager to rent these units and rooms out. Also, call them directly. Many of the different hotels and condo rentals have to pay a fee for every reservation they get from an online company. By calling them, you may get a better deal since they won't have to pay that fee, and in the process you strike up a relationship early on with the staff which will help with customer service issues (should you have any) during your stay.

So, what are you waiting for??? The rooms are ready, the surf is rolling, and the beaches of Sanibel Island are some of the most beautiful in the world. Get those bags packed and get moving for a vacation you will be glad you took.

How To Get A Low Cost Health Savings Account Plan

Bri Finance/Insurance 2008-01-15

What are Health Savings Accounts?

A Health Savings Account (HSA) is an inexpensive, high-deductible health insurance plan, combined with a tax-deferred savings account. You put money in a savings account to be used toward paying your health insurance deductible (the amount you must pay toward an insurance claim before your insurance will pay).

The money you put into your savings account is tax deductible, and can also be used to pay for health care expenses like prescription drugs, vision care, or dental bills. The money that remains in your account earns interest tax deferred so you don't have to pay taxes on it.

A high-deductible health plan (also known as a catastrophic health insurance plan) is a health insurance plan whereby you pay for the first few thousand dollars of your medical bills, then your insurance company pays the rest.

You control how to spend your HSA and what type of investments to make with the money in your account. If you withdraw money from your HSA for non-medical reasons you're subject to paying taxes on it and a 10% penalty.

Where can I get an HSA?

You can sign up for an HSA with your employer, at your bank, at a credit union, or with an insurance company (see link below). For more information on HSAs and how to set up your account, visit the U.S. Treasury Department's website at: treasury.gov/offices/public-affairs/hsa.

How much do HSAs cost?

You don't purchase an HSA, you purchase a high deductible health insurance plan and put money into your savings account to pay for your deductible and other medical expenses.

Where can I get cheap high deductible health insurance?

To get cheap high deductible health insurance you need to compare rates from different companies. Fortunately, this is easy thanks to the Internet. You can go online to an insurance comparison website, fill out one simple form, then get rate quotes from a number of insurance companies.

Big Fuel Savings Frequently Offset Cost Of Tonneau Cover

Matthew Paolini Vehicles/automotive 2008-02-15

Buyers of a new pickup truck are usually quick to invest in a tonneau cover, sometimes called a truck bed cover, for their new Ford, Chevy or Dodge pickup. If you're still pondering the purchase of a tonneau cover, here's a trio of reasons that make a truck bed cover not just a good idea, but even a great one!

1. Whether it's a new flatscreen TV, groceries or bags of mulch for your flowerbeds, a tonneau cover is great at protecting your valuable cargo from the effects of Mother Nature and the elements While it's probably true that no tonneau cover is 100% waterproof, several features help a cover keep the elements out of your truck bed. Weather seals do a good job of keeping your cargo dry and arched support bows give the tonneau cover a slight curve not unlike the camber of a road. This promotes water run-off, which in turn helps keep your cargo dry.

2. A tonneau cover is also a barrier between your cargo and someone who might be interested in stealing it. By hiding your cargo from the prying eyes of a potential thief, you make a theft much less likely. Beyond the obvious benefits of covering up your possessions, different types of tonneau cover take different approaches to security. Most hinged covers, for example, can be locked down completely by using a locking tailgate. Hard tops and retractables usually have their own lock and key system that latches shut at the rear of the truck.

3. One of the biggest benefits of a tonneau cover is improved gas mileage. Left uncovered, a truck bed traps air that presses against the tailgate, causing an enormous amount of drag that reduces gas mileage. Adding a tonneau cover creates a sleeker, more aerodynamic profile that can significantly increase gas mileage. Experts say a tonneau cover will boost your truck's gas mileage by anywhere from 5 to 10 percent, something almost universally confirmed by real world experience. At today's gas prices, these fuel savings can go a long way to offsetting the cost of a tonneau cover.

There are roughly a dozen manufacturers of tonneau covers in the United States and it's possible to get a great deal on brands like Extang, Pace Edwards or TruXedo at any number of truck-related websites. J C Whitney or AutoAnything are good places to start your search for an aftermarket tonneau cover. If you have a toolbox that butts up against your truck's cab, the Extang Full Tilt tool box tonneau cover may be a good choice for your truck because it's hinged right at the toolbox. I like it because it gives me easy access to both my tools and cargo at the same time.

Savings On Medical Transcription Costs

Health Fitness/Medicine 2008-03-21
View Detail
Of course American consumers are always looking for ways to cut costs and to be more practical and wise with their money. The same thing goes for many doctors and hospitals. While some are only looking to make a dollar or two, there are still many out there who have the best interests of the patient in mind. They look for ways to save you money, and one way they might do this is by evaluating the medical transcription company whom they may use.

Medical transcription has long been a part of the medical field. It allows doctors to dictate notes about patients and then have their verbiage transferred to a text format through the use of a medical transcription service. These services are critical for almost every medical office across the country, as this is the work which will generate the patient files to which your doctor will refer to time and again as he keeps watch over your health.

There has been some concern, however, in recent years that the idea of outsourced medical transcription, which may indeed save you and your healthcare provider money, may not be the best option when it comes to managing your health and looking out for your well being.

Outsourced medical transcription is a term that has become very popular over the past few years as it has in many industries. This is simply where a company will hire medical transcribers from overseas versus here in the United States in a hope of saving money on the costs of services. Often, they will find people who are willing to work for less and who are appreciative of the work that they are receiving. It seems that most recently, the Philippines have become a great source of employees and labor in this field. Filipinos are typically fluent in English as a second language and have made a push to attract this type of work from American companies.

However, there is a growing concern that this is not a good idea for American healthcare overall. Doctors refer to patient records on a daily basis in an effort to provide and meet the very standard of healthcare premium that we have all come to expect and demand. Medical transcription is a critical tool for making sure that this happens. Doctors rely upon those in medical transcription to provide reliable data and accurate translations from dictation. They may make many medical decisions based upon what is in these charts.

Many experts fear that outsourced medical transcription will not give healthcare providers the most accurate and reliable information upon which they so heavily rely. Some things are, quite simply, lost in translation.

This is where the American patient must make a stand. Trying to wrangle the most savings out of medical transcription services may not be the best way to approach saving money. Your health is certainly nothing to play around with and none of us can afford to have serious errors in our medical charts that stem from one doctor or hospital trying to save a bit of money on his end. Ask your physician who does his medical transcription and check around to see if they are reliable. It is through this research that you can gain confidence with you healthcare which is being provided and can maybe help you rest just a little bit easier at night.

The Significant Energy And Cost Savings Of Micro CHP Systems

Alan Jacobson Computer/Computer 2007-10-14
View Detail

Micro CHP systems are an exciting home energy-producing technology currently used mostly in the UK and Europe. It is a popular and growing way to heat homes, and is seen as a way to meet progressive government objectives while saving the consumer money. It is likely that Micro CHP systems will also become more popular in the US soon because of their many benefits. In fact, given current oil and gas prices, there are currently companies studying the possibility of bringing this technology in a widespread way to the US.

CHP (combined heat and power) is an extremely efficient technology for generating electricity and heat simultaneously. This process is often referred to as "cogeneration". Micro CHP systems can use a variety of generation technologies, including fuel cells, Stirling engines, or conventional means like gas and oil. Simply put, the heat generated in the process of creating electricity is recovered in a manner than allows it to be used to heat the home.

Micro CHP systems are very simple to install and can take the place of a conventional boiler or furnace. A micro CHP system can be as much as 90% energy efficient. Most who use domestic CHP report having a lower energy bill. In addition, in this age of Global Warming, micro CHP reduces the carbon "footprint" of homes that use it, reducing carbon dioxide emissions significantly.

One of the more exciting aspects of micro chp systems is their potential to allow people to actually sell the excess electricity produced when heating the home back to the electrical company - often called "on the grid" micro CHP. This could mean that you'd heat your house, and get a check from the electrical company!

MicroCHP is extremely easy to install. The challenge might be to find a qualified installer, particularly if you are in the United States. Some existing conventional systems can remain intact, with just retrofits and added parts installed. However others may need to be completely replaced. Depending on your current system, you should be able to recoup the cost of installation in anywhere from one to five years.

Recent predictions suggest that the use of "combined heat and power" (CHP) on a large scale by utilities could be a multi-billion dollar industry across the globe in just a few years. Many new houses are built with the systems installed, and the cost involved in adding micro CHP to existing homes is coming down dramatically. You could tap into this exciting new technology yourself for your own home, save money on your utility bills, and reduce your carbon "footprint" in the process.

Telecom Expense Management Is Not Just About Cost Savings

-- -- Communications/Other communications 2007-06-07
View Detail

Telecom expenses cost corporations vast sums of money, accounting for 3.6% of revenues or more in most companies, according to The Aberdeen Group. Telecom Expense Management (TEM) can help reduce these costs to a minimum, but there is another aspect of TEM that is not as well known, yet worthy of attention.

In these days of great uncertainties, security concerns are playing an ever greater role. The Web publication, security.itworld.com reports that the FBI and FCC estimate an annual loss of more than $4 billion due to toll call fraud. Incidents costing companies upwards of $30,000 in fraudulent calls are not uncommon, according to the same source.

Industrial espionage is another security problem that has taken on major proportions. The American Society for Industrial Security estimates that losses due to industrial espionage may amount to as much as $63 billion annually. Surprisingly, about 85% of industrial espionage crimes are committed by the company's employees.

Hackers have been known to compromise corporate telephone systems by placing obscene messages on the telephone system to greet all callers. Not exactly a reputation enhancing act for a company.

To make matters worse, some telecom fraud is now under investigation by the FBI as potential national security threats.

Fortunately, something can be done about these threats. As part of a Telecom Expense Management system, some call accounting software has features to detect anomalies. Call Data Records (CDRs) reveal important data about all incoming and outgoing calls. The software looks for unusual call patterns, such as calls that are too long or too short for their type, unusual destinations, calls made at an unusual time of day, etc. These systems may be set up to alert personnel to unusual activity by paging them, or by printing or faxing exception reports. As an added bonus, once employees are aware that their calls are being monitored, this will become a limiting factor on private calls they would otherwise make.

Home Lighting: Cost Savings And Design Through LED Lights

Ben Anton Home Family/Home Management 2008-03-09
View Detail

More and more home, apartment and office owners are looking for ways to go green. The benefits not only improve the quality of our environment, but they also make for significant tax deductions at the end of the year. As energy efficiency is becoming more prevalent in household lighting and home lighting design is becoming more popular, it is no surprise that LED lights are coming to the forefront as a leading choice for illumination.

We are all familiar with the traditional incandescent light bulb. These bulbs are filled with a gas and then a filament is stretched across the inside. When electricity is run across the filament, it heats up to often very high temperatures. The bulb s glow is a result of the filament heating up. The heat is a result of wasted energy. Incandescent bulbs also suffer from inherent fragility. These lights weaken over time as the heat separates atoms from the whole and causes thin spots in the filament. Eventually these thin spots will break and you will need to replace the bulb.

An alternative light to the incandescent is the halogen bulb. In a halogen bulb the envelope that holds the filament is a lot smaller, made of quartz and is filled with a halogen gas. These bulbs can burn a bit brighter and will last for longer periods of time. It is halogen lighting that is currently used quite often by movie theaters, television studios and movie sets. These bulbs are still heat inefficient, however. The most common halogen light used for indoor and outdoor home lighting is the twelve volt MR16 halogen light.

The LED, light-emitting diode, bulb is a culmination of the best of both the incandescent and halogen worlds but with the efficiency that neither can provide. In an LED bulb, the science on which it is based is completely different from the other two options. There is no filament and very little heat. The light source is a diode that emits light when electricity is applied. This mechanism for creating light allows for much lower energy use, brighter light, and longer lasting bulbs.

One of the most common LED home light bulbs available is the LED Lenser Leflector. These bulbs can replace any halogen bulb up to twenty watts. The leflector can burn continuously for more than 50,000 hours before needing to be replaced. That is more than five years of continuous use and over thirty years if the bulbs burn an average of four hours a day. LED home bulbs are over ninety percent more efficient than a halogen bulb and can be operated for pennies a year. These features make them perfect for moving your home kitchen, living room, game room; you name it - to a more environmentally conscious dwelling.

Outdoor applications for LED lights are many. They work well for outdoor accent lighting because of the many color options available and can be adjusted to be both spotlights and security flood lights.

Updating light fixtures in a home or office is an excellent way to reduce household costs, save energy and at the same time improve upon your home lighting design.

Flexibility, Cost Savings Lead to Rise in Design-Build Remodeling Projects

Lani and Allen Voivod Home Family/Home Family 2007-05-30
View Detail
In the construction industry, the traditional way of completing a project means getting a design from an architect, soliciting bids for the work, and selecting a general contractor to complete the work. Known as "design-bid-build," this method is still very much the norm in home construction.

But another approach - the Design-Build method - has seen a resurgence in recent years, thanks to a skyrocketing remodeling industry and the unique challenges presented by remodeling work.

"There's a big difference between new building compared with tie-ins to existing homes," says Ed Campbell, Operations Manager for G.M. Roth, a Nashua, NH-based home remodeling firm. "That's why about 70% of remodeling designs created by architects never make it to the actual construction phase."

Design-Build dates back as far as ancient Greece, where great works like the Parthenon rose under the watchful eye of a "Master Builder," responsible for both the design and the construction.

Today, such master builders are known by many different terms - "project managers," "production managers," even "lead carpenters." No matter what you call them, the two prominent reasons why they're gaining in popularity today are:

1. Flexibility. In a "design-bid-build" situation, the designer is removed from the process once a project is sent out for bids. If changes need to be made in the middle of construction, they often require time-consuming redesigns - and can often involve a lot of finger-pointing between architects and builders.

Not so with Design-Build. "Designers are involved throughout the process," Campbell says, "so they can make changes on the fly based on what the installers encounter at the job site."

2. Cost savings. When changes have to be made during construction, bringing the designer back into the process often involves spending more money to get a redesign...which can mean more money on the construction side...which can make life increasingly difficult for the owner caught in the middle.

With Design-Build, Campbell says there's a significant cost savings. "Designers learn up front what the budget requirements are, so they can recommend the appropriate materials for the project. They won't design an SUV remodel on an economy budget."

And as the remodeling industry exploded (reaching $280 billion in 2005, nearly double that of 1995's performance, according to the National Association of Home Builders), the Design-Build approach grew with it. According to a 2004 survey by ZweigWhite, integrated design-build firms will see 80% of their revenues come from design-build projects through 2014.

There's an even simpler reason to like the Design-Build approach, however. "It's one-stop responsibility for everything that happens with your remodeling project," says Campbell. "How can you beat that?"

Discover The Huge Benefits And Cost Savings Of Home VOIP Service

Jon Arnold Communications/Communications 2007-07-03

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past several years, you should be considering VOIP services for your home phone. VOIP service is where you use your high-speed Internet connection to make and receive phone calls. Your local telephone company is not involved with your home phone at all anymore. The cost savings and benefits are huge, as discussed in this article.

The first thing you need is a reliable high-speed Internet connection. Dial-up will obviously not work, and a satellite connection will not work well either. If you have cable Internet or DSL Internet service at your home, and the connection is very reliable, then you should not have any problems with your VOIP service. Some people, especially in the DSL world, have high-speed Internet via DSL but their DSL service is very poor, and if that is the case, then you are not going to be happy with anybody's VOIP service either. In more than 96% of reported problems with VOIP service, the problem turned out not to be with the VOIP service, but the lousy high-speed Internet service at the customer's home.

One thing that confuses some people is that the high-speed Internet service is not included in the cost of the VOIP service. You purchase the VOIP service, and the VOIP provider assumes that you already have a reliable high-speed Internet connection, but the VOIP provider typically does not provide your high-speed connection, nor do they have any control over it, since it is normally provided by a different company.

Where should you buy your home VOIP service? First look at the large number of VOIP providers that you have to choose from. All of their offerings are pretty much the same, with only a few minor differences here and there. But do your homework, and check the VOIP provider's rating with Consumer Reports and online reviews. One place to NOT get your VOIP service is typically via your cable company. Yes, you will get your cable service and VOIP services billed on the same invoice every month, but you are going to be paying about twice as much as you should for the VOIP service, which is a very high price to pay for that convenience.

Let's look at the financial part of it and see how that falls out. With your traditional home phone line, you are probably paying at least $25 a month or more, and the only thing that gives you is dial tone. No long distance is included in that price. You might have a plan from the phone company that also provides unlimited long distance, but now you are paying about $50 a month.

Now compare that to the cost of home VOIP service. For about $25 a month (and some are much less than that), you get dial tone, you can make unlimited local calls, and you can make unlimited calls anywhere in the continental US. Some carriers expand your long distance to include Canada and Puerto Rico also. You also get voicemail, caller ID, and typically other features that your phone company would charge extra for, like call waiting and call blocking.

So even if you don't make a lot of long distance calls, you are still saving money for basic phone service. And if you do make long distance calls (or if you WOULD make long distance calls if they didn't cost you anything extra), you can save a ton of money.

The Cost-Effective Ways to Bigger Savings When Times Are Tight

Admin I Business/Management 2008-04-14

Statistical reports prove that Americans are in love with plastics. Consumers know it more as credit cards. In fact, nearly 81% of the American households have at least one credit card. They find these plastics as the most convenient tool for shopping and paying utility bills.

The credit cards make payments and expenses so convenient that the average credit card balance that American consumers have amounts to $8,000. That is, indeed, a great amount of debt.

So if you want to avoid debts and save more on your credit card bills, try to cut back on your expenses and follow the rules on how to save on credit cards.

Here’s how:

1. Choose the best credit card

Not all credit cards are created equal. There is a particular credit card that will suit your needs. Getting this type of card will provide you the rewards, services, and interest rates that will suit your needs.

For instance, if you want convenient shopping but can’t afford to go the extra mile in shopping expenses, it is best to get a credit card that can offer you with reasonable credit limits. In this way, you will not be tempted to max out your card and accumulate debts you simply can’t afford to pay.

2. Go for the lowest interest rate

If you think you can’t pay your credit card bills on time but are willing to pay your balances in another period, it is best to get a credit card with lower interest rates.

Consumers may not be aware of this, but one of the reasons why debts are getting higher is based on the interest rates. The actual balances are made worse through interest rate charges.

3. Choose the reward credit cards that suits your lifestyle

Don’t get a credit card just because it can provide you with several rewards. Not all rewards are worth your time and money.

For instance, a flyer’s rewards credit card may not be functional if you aren’t a frequent traveler. But if you are, getting a flyer’s reward credit card can give you discounts as well as points that can be converted into tickets. This will be savings considering the prices of airline tickets nowadays.

4. Keep a record of all your expenses

In credit cards, convenience is the name of the game. However, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you neglect your responsibilities. One of which is to keep a record of all your expenses.

In this way, you will be able to identify which purchases weren’t necessary at all. So the next time around, you will know what to avoid.

5. Do not keep balances

Never let your balances stay on your credit card bill statements for long. This means that if you have accrued balances for the month, try to pay them immediately.

Paying your minimum balance only won’t do you any good. In fact, this might trigger further debts. Besides, interest rates only apply whenever you have balances. And interest rates are additional expenses for you. If you pay your balances monthly, you won’t be charged with interest rates, so you get more savings.

6. Be wary on cash advances

If it isn’t an emergency, never take cash advances on your credit card. Financial experts say that cash advances reap higher interest rates compared to the ones that you have on your credit card purchases, which is, by nature, soaring as well.

Combination of these two will definitely bring you to debt problems. Besides, cash advances don’t take on certain periods, so that means the charges will take place instantly. That would be very hard if you aren’t prepared to pay off your balance immediately.

7. Ask for a lower rate

If you have been an obedient customer and pay your bill on time, it wouldn’t hurt you to call your bank or your credit card issuer and ask for a lower rate.

Surveys show that nearly 55% of those who participated in the survey were reported to have trimmed down their interest rates simply by requesting their bank or their credit card companies to act accordingly.

With lower interest rates, you can definitely save more especially if you are the type of credit card holder who doesn’t get to pay the balances on time.

All of these things are catered to help you cut back your expenses and save more on your credit cards. These things have been proven effective. It is now up to you if you will heed this advice or not.

Just remember, your actions will always tell you the kind of life you want to live, so better make good choices and start saving now.

A Refurbished Digital Camera: The Pros, The Cons ... The Cost Savings

Tracy Hargraves Arts Entertainment/Photography 2007-06-16

Looking for a new digital camera, but intimidated by the cost? One way that many chose to avoid the hefty price tag of new cameras is to buy a refurbished model. What, exactly, is a refurbished camera, you ask? Simple: it is a camera that has been returned to a store, retailer or manufacturer and then tested for problems and defects before being re-sold. In many cases, these cameras are essentially brand new, but certain laws and regulations restrict so called “open-box” products from being re-sold as new. This means that buying a refurbished camera can actually often mean buying a brand new camera that someone opened once on their birthday, then waited till his favorite aunt was safely out of the house before returning it to the store.

The so called “open box” rule means that if you investigate closely enough, you can actually purchase a brand new, top-of-the-line digital camera for a significantly reduced price, solely because someone else returned it out of its original packaging. Also, unlike buying a used camera, a factory refurbished camera should come with all the accessories that you would expect from a new product: owner’s/user’s manual, USB/Firewire connection, batteries, wrist strap, memory card, and even sometimes a protective case.

So why don’t more people buy refurbished digital cameras if they are just like new and yet are much cheaper? The fact is that most people don’t know these great deals exist at all. In fact, manufacturers and electronics stores keep “open box” and refurbished cameras hushed up because if you don’t know about them you’ll be much more likely to purchase a brand new, full price model, generating more revenue for the retailer. Of course, this is not the only reason you may not have considered buying a refurbished camera. There are, as with every good deal, some possible negative aspects to purchasing a refurbished camera.

The fact is that while many are returned unused or hardly used, some refurbished models have actually been used enough to need replacement parts or other repairs making the product’s system more vulnerable to defects and more likely to cause problems. Because refurbished cameras don’t specify the amount of use prior to return or the reason for return, consumers are often left in the dark. This fact has led to many urban legends of refurbished electronics malfunctioning, but the truth is, in most cases refurbished digital cameras are almost as good as new.

How do you make sure you purchase a reliable refurbished camera? The most important way to make sure you don’t end up with a poor product that malfunctions on you is to only consider refurbished products that include a manufacturers warranty for at least ninety days. This can prevent you from ending up with a broken camera that you are unable to return.

In spite of the possible negatives inherent in buying a product that admittedly may have been used before, the cost benefits and positives greatly outweigh the bad. Buying a refurbished digital camera can cut the cost significantly while still providing you with an excellent product. If you are considering buying a digital camera, be sure to check the internet and your local retailers for refurbished models – they are worth the time it takes to investigate.

Conference calls is nothing new and have been in existence for quite a long time now, but online conference calls, no doubt, have brought in brand new saving opportunities that the business world is already availing. For a while, if we start thinking back about how we used to converse with our business associates 10 years back, it would definitely enough to blow our head why web conference calling was not available and part of businesses. Well, this was something about past where we had big time loss because of huge phone bills credited to communication. But today, you must not miss this great opportunity to save in dollars using conference calls rather than phones, even if you play in millions.

Well, it’s not just cost advantages but online conference call offer many other exciting features too. Video conferencing and IM (instant messaging) are just two to mention here. Connecting two to hundreds of people from same or distant places, conference call has definitely helped and brought businesses to unimaginable heights in terms of savings.

Realizing the increasing popularity and success of conference calling, number of websites and companies has started providing Internet conference call services at flat rates. You would be amazed to see the prices and they are still dropping with time and popularity.
It’s quite obvious to guess that the potential to communicate with as fewer as three and as many as hundreds of people, immediately, charms the smart businessman and moreover, it’s not unusual for small business owners to avail these conference calls services today.
Another reason for low prices is the competition prevailing in online conference call services. Business owners, in true words, who are using online conference call services, are in fact reaping the benefits credited to the immense cost savings, and increased productivity. The work that used to take 20 hours is now accomplished in just 20 minutes. Isn’t it appealing? Well, though it is getting popular but still many people do not grasp the fact of availability tremendous new opportunities that have been signaled and are simply waiting to be cashed in on.

Ok enough about conference calls benefits. You must be curious about the cost. We are already aware of the low cost, but how much does exactly it cost if you are willing to host your own conference call? Well, that depends. As it is quite genuine to assume that costs vary with the service packages but on an average it’s comes about 10 cents per minute per participant if you use a toll-free line. It may not seem much appealing but when 100 people are on line then it definitely make a good difference.

Despite the plummeted costs, you can find some service providers who are still charging a premium and there is no doubt, they are preying on their existing customer base. Better you go for a good research before deciding on any service provider. To your attention and interest, there are many free conference call providers available without any issues. You will get good call quality and features that are in line paid services only, but if you want to offer your customers a toll-free number to call, then you must have to go for a paid service. Additionally, paid conference call providers normally offer comparatively better services and a bigger conference size.

Well, to end the discussion on conference calling, I would say that almost every business can be made a lot more money-spinning by a little creative use of online conference call services. It not only eases the communication but also eliminates the need to travel much. So, don’t be late to avail conference calling as a cost savings measure for your business now. Take just few minutes to make an appropriate cost analysis, find a good service provider and of course, get the credit of making immense cost savings with this technology.

Major Savings Could Be Made On Motoring Costs

Abbi Rouse Finance/Finance 2008-04-02

Telling mistruths in an attempt to reduce car insurance costs could actually exacerbate financial problems for motorists, it has been suggested.

Research carried out by Gocompare reveals that although drivers may be tempted to give policy providers incorrect information - such as failing to make providers aware of modifications to their automobile - in a bid to secure a cheaper policy, they are putting themselves at risk. Doing so, the price comparison website asserted, could mean that their insurance is invalidated and cause them to struggle to secure cheap cover in the future.

Due to facing an increase in insurance costs, motorists may find themselves coming under pressure when meeting other kinds of monetary demand related to their vehicle such as petrol costs, tax and repairs. The ability to manage other spending commitments such as loans, household bills and credit cards may also come under strain.

Hayley Parsons, managing director of Gocompare, said: "Insurance represents a significant part of the cost of running a car these days, so everyone is looking for savings. It might be tempting to alter certain details or omit key information if you think it'll help you get a better deal but this could result in your policy being invalidated if you are found out.

"One of the best ways to save money on your insurance is not to just accept your renewal quote - the best company for you 12 months ago may not be the best today. I'm always amazed that only around a quarter of people switch their insurer each year - potentially throwing away hundreds of pounds."

Ms Parsons went on to report that the proliferation of price comparison websites in recent months means that it should be relatively easy for consumers to browse the market for a competitive deal. In taking the time to do so, she claimed, "significant savings" can be made. Research carried out by the firm indicated that in shopping around for offers the typical motorist can save more than 200 pounds on their annual car insurance policy.

Gocompare also advised those looking to reduce the cost of their premium to take the time to hone their skills on the road. By taking the Pass Plus course, it was claimed that motorists may find that they are eligible for a discount on their policy. In addition, taking steps to improve the security of a vehicle, such as purchasing a car alarm or tracking device, was put forward as a way in which insurance quotes may be lowered. Consumers were also urged to act in a safe manner while driving and keep to speed limits. With breaking speed laws indicated to be one of the most common convictions for drivers, it was pointed out that the more this type of offence is on a licence the higher a car insurance policy will be.

Meanwhile, consumers wishing to purchase a car may want to consider getting a personal loan. In selecting this ahead of a garage showroom deal, drivers may find that they are able to buy their dream motor quickly and are left with affordable repayments to make each month. Furthermore, the financial assistance that a loan provides may help consumers to take out a comprehensive insurance policy. Getting a personal loan for the purposes of buying a car may be helpful for a significant number of Britons after a recent Direct Line study revealed that 22 per cent of drivers are looking to get a new automobile in 2008. The study also indicated that some 16.2 per cent of motorists wish to purchase either a people carrier or a 4x4.

Catalog Cost Saving Tips

Although having a limited budget means you can’t have all the perks to make your catalog printing project the best in your field, there are things you can do to reduce your time and save on your costs. And it doesn’t mean doing your catalog printing yourself like designing your own catalog printing design or reproducing your prints yourself. You can do something to lessen the time it takes your hired catalog printing designer to finish your layouts.

To save on costs on your catalog printing design, here are a few tips to consider:

Provide all the information you have on your products to your catalog printing designer.

Each of your photos in your catalog printing project has its own product copy block that goes with it. The product copy block is usually made up of the description, product block title, product number, item name and price. You can help your catalog printing designer save much time if you’ll be able to supply them all the information they would need to complete the catalog printing copy block. You just need to be consistent with your content and keep your elements in order.

Provide an organized grouping of the product blocks for your catalog printing project.

In addition to providing your catalog printing designer with all the information for each of the products, you should also make sure that everything is within their own category and groupings. If your catalog printing designer would still have to sort out from the amount of information you’ve given them, it would really make them take more time which should be used to start designing your catalog printing project already.

It would also be convenient for your catalog printing designer if you can tell them how much space you would want each of your product groupings to have.

Provide your catalog printing designer with image files complete with details for quick reference.

You’re giving your catalog printing designer the images of your products, so why not go all the way and provide a reference of what file goes with what product copy.

Then go even further and give all the supporting details and copies. This additional information would form part of your sales pitch in your catalog printing project.

Finally, provide your catalog printing designer with only the images, files, and information you would want included in your catalog printing project. Don’t make it harder for them to sort out from all the information you have. It would definitely add to the time it takes for your catalog printing designer to start designing and finish quick.
