Every day millions of batteries all over the world are thrown away only because they have stopped working. Batteries of cars, motorcycles, heavy equipment, trucks, golf carts and those used in hospitals, military and industrial farms are discarded unnecessarily. Usually most of the batteries die due to the build up or sulphation on the plates of the battery. It is actually build up of a gas, which hinders the contact of electrolyte with plates. This in turn makes the battery to stop holding the charge and stop producing electricity.

Reconditioning of a battery is to remove the sulphation by letting in some additives and making the battery rest for some time so that the sulphation breaks off on the plate. A question maybe asked that if battery rechargers are available in the market then why recondition? The answer to this is that battery chargers only charge battery for use but cannot avoid sulphation on them. Once you recondition them, they can be charged for a 100 per cent performance.

There are many ways by which a battery is reconditioned. Many people choose to recondition them using home tools and many people have decided to make it a profession by inventing new devices which recondition batteries.

One common way of reconditioning battery is to leave the battery in the refrigerator’s freezer for a night and them put it back for recharging. Normally 2-3 cycles of such exercise makes a battery work for 300+ minutes (3 hours). Perhaps they think they can break the crystals of sulphation by hitting it hard on the floor!?

Some of the professionals in the battery industry have invented rechargers, which have an option of recondition too. For e.g. Cheetah Universal Smart Charger with the MP2000 Cups. They work very well and if you pre-conditioned your batteries in the fridge then they can recondition the battery better.

NickelCadmium (NiCd) cells are very common batteries used in equipments. They are conditioned by putting them through cycling. In cycling process, the battery is charged and uncharged through its entire normal operating range.

Modern car batteries are complex and need care while reconditioning. The batteries contain dangerous acids as electrolyte. Therefore, when manhandling the battery, utter most caution must be taken.

The most important thing is, know your battery well. Test your battery occasionally for optimum usage. It saves the environment as you are recycling the battery and it saves your money, as there is no wastage on new batteries. High resistance, leakage or open circuits will cause batteries to fail; no longer providing the expected autonomy or, in the case of a generator the inability to start. The Result - loss of the site load. Then suddenly you require a 24-7 emergency call out engineer.

Uninterruptible power supplies may have internal batteries or housed in separate battery cabinets. Each battery has a recommended design life, usually 5 years or 10 years, although these are optimistic as they don't take into account high usage of the UPS Battery system caused by intermittent spikes, brown outs or voltage fluctuations which are absorbed by the batteries to protect your mission critical sensitive systems.

Even though the battery may have an operating life expectancy stated by the manufacturer of typically up to ten years, if it is not checked on a regular basis it can and will fail. In a string of 32 blocs all it takes is one battery to become high impedance and the complete string will be useless as the load will be unable to draw the current it requires and as a result the load will be lost and your critical load will fall over. The old batteries can be removed and new batteries supplied.

The most obvious signs of Battery leakage due to failure within the sealed lead acid battery causing the casing to split can be visible. Other issues of high impedance and open circuit are not obvious and require regular checks.

There are a number of different types of battery construction but they can be loosely divided into to two common types-'wet cells' and 'valve regulated lead acid' (VRLA) batteries( often referred to as just sealed lead acid batteries').

Wet cell battery maintenance can be more time consuming, as the trade off against increased life expectancy is the higher cost of maintenance due to the necessity of taking specific gravity readings and topping' up the cell. A visual check of wet cell batteries needs to be undertaken on a more regular basis as any noticeable drop in electrolyte level must be swiftly rectified.

The VRLA 'lead acid' battery is more difficult to check being a sealed battery. The most common method of testing, often built into most UPS systems equipment is a battery self test which is often carried out automatically on a weekly/monthly time cycle. If the test fails the UPS system will generate an alarm. The major drawback is if the equipment is supporting a small load comparative to the capacity of the equipment the battery will not be worked very hard and could prematurely fail.

The more reliable means of regular testing a battery is either:-

1. By loading the battery to one third of its capacity and carrying out a capacity test

2. impedance testing -increasingly popular as it's non-intrusive.

There are several methods of achieving the same result but one method is to pass a known ac current through the battery and measure the ac voltage and thus, by using Ohms Law calculate the battery impedance. These results can be compared with the manufacturer's recommended value and by keeping records can be compared over a period of time allowing a replacement programme to be implemented when the battery impedance has reached a preset value.

Which ever method of battery testing you choose , regular battery maintenance is an integral part of any Uninterruptible Power Supply or Generator standby power protection system .

part to legislation.
Only one in six households in North America recycle rechargeable batteries. Teaching the public to bring these

batteries to a recycling center is a challenging task. Homeowners have the lowest return

ratios, but this should improve once more recycling repositories become available and

better environmental awareness is emphasized.
Careless disposal of the NiCd is very hazardous to the environment. If used in

landfills, the cadmium will eventually dissolve itself and the toxic substance will seep

into the water supply, causing serious health problems. Our oceans are already beginning

to show traces of cadmium (along with aspirin, penicillin and antidepressants) but the

source of the contamination is unknown.
Although NiMH batteries are considered environmentally friendly, this chemistry is

also being recycled. The main derivative is nickel, which is considered semi-toxic. NiMH

also contains an electrolyte that, in large amounts, is hazardous to the environment.
If no disposal service is available in an area, individual NiMH batteries can be discarded with other household

wastes. If ten or more batteries are accumulated, the user should consider disposing the

batteries in a secure waste landfill.

Battery Do's:

• A new battery comes in a discharged condition and must be charged before use (refer to the devices manual for charging instructions). Upon initial use (or after a prolonged storage period) the battery may require three to four charge/discharge cycles before achieving maximum capacity.

• When charging the battery for the first time the device may indicate that charging is complete after just 10 or 15 minutes. This is a normal phenomenon with rechargeable batteries. Remove the battery from the device, reinsert it and repeat the charging procedure.

• It is important to condition (fully discharge and then fully charge) the battery every two to three weeks. Failure to do so may significantly shorten the battery's life (this does not apply to Li-Ion batteries, which do not require conditioning). To discharge, simply run the device under the battery's power until it shuts down or until you get a low battery warning. Then recharge the battery as instructed in the user's manual.

• If the battery will not be in use for a month or longer, it is recommended that it be removed from the device and stored in a cool, dry, clean place.

• It is normal for a battery to become warm to the touch during charging and discharging.

• A charged battery will eventually lose its charge if unused. It may therefore be necessary to recharge the battery after a storage period.

• The milliamp-hour (mAH) rating of the Hi-CapacityTM battery will often be higher than the one on the original battery. A higher mAH rating is indicative of a longer lasting (higher capacity) battery and will not cause any incompatibilities. A Hi-CapacityTM battery will, in most cases, outperform the original by 30% to 50%.

• Actual battery run-time depends upon the power demands made by the equipment. In the case of notebook computers, screen brightness, the use of the CPU, the hard drive, and other peripherals results in an additional drain upon the battery, effectively reducing the battery's run-time. The total run-time of the battery is also heavily dependent upon the design of the equipment. To ensure maximum performance of the battery, optimize the computer's power management features. Refer to the computer manual for further instructions.

• Do not short-circuit. A short-circuit may cause severe damage to the battery.

• Do not drop, hit or otherwise abuse the battery as this may result in the exposure of the cell contents, which are corrosive.

• Do not expose the battery to moisture or rain.

This serves to clean the plates of the battery by knocking off any accumulation that may have built up over a long period of use. Battery rebuild are a completely different service. Battery rebuilds are usually performed on batteries that are made up of several smaller batteries called cells. The service is very popular for power tool batteries, older style laptop batteries, and custom battery packs.
