Batteries are unique components that are comprised of various elements that include heavy metals such as nickel cadmium, mercury nickel metal hydrate and alkaline that can harm the environment if not properly recycled. It is extremely important that each of us understands how to properly dispose of all of those batteries that we use everyday in our lives. In 2006 the state of California actually imposed a landfill ban on all household batteries. It's vitally important that you understand how your local community may require you to dispose of your batteries that are no longer working. Some states or municipalities that have recycling programs will require you to sort batteries by type [lithium, alkaline and rechargeable for example] in order to make the recycling effort more efficient. Many people have misconceptions about hybrid car batteries: "You don't want a hybrid 'cause every couple days you've gotta plug them in somewhere to recharge the batteries."

But interestingly enough, many hybrid car owners actually would like the ability to plug in their vehicles at night. This way, they can use that much less gasoline; the gas engine part of the hybrid would now need to run that much less when they made their morning commutes. Now, nothing's free--including household electricity. However, the idea here is that the additional charges on their monthly electric bill would still be far less than the added $3.00+ per each additional gallon of fuel. The 2008 and beyond hybrid electric vehicles are supposedly going to have the capability to plug them in.

Another popular myth is that the batteries only last a couple years at the most. Then you've gotta buy thousands of dollars worth of new batteries. This is far from true:

The standard warranty on hybrid batteries usually runs between 80,000 and 100,000 miles. Great advances in battery technology since 2000 have raised the life expectancy to a respectable level in 2007. Taxi services using hybrid-only cars are springing up everywhere...now THAT should raise the eyebrows of hybrid naysayers. The warranty for battery life may be at 100,000 miles, however, taxi services are seeing 200,000 to 300,000 miles with absolutely no degradation in battery performance. And we're talking several large taxi fleets in New York City!

If the batteries DO need replacing, they will cost between $1700 - $3000, not $10,000+ like many folks say.

But the key to this long battery life lies in "smart charging" where the electronic charging computer will not let the battery get charged above around 60% of capacity, nor let it drop below 40% of its capacity. This allows the new NIMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries to run practically forever.

That being said, battery technology remains the main area for the greatest advances in hybrid car technology yet to come. Lighter batteries that hold longer charges and put out higher power is the dream of every hybrid engineering company. Battery technology is where hybrids stand to gain the most benefit.

The main hope for improving this situation for hybrid cars lies with lithium batteries. These are the same batteries that are currently used to power laptops and cameras. They provide a much more concentrated and therefore smaller way of storing energy as electricity. While lithium batteries are the best option for batteries in hybrids now, they aren't without problems...

The problem with lithium batteries is making them big enough so that they can store enough energy to power hybrid cars without having to revert to the gas engine when driving in town. Lithium batteries are very efficient when manufactured to a certain capacity and size. But if this is increased they are subject to a condition called thermal run off. This can cause larger batteries to overheat and in some instances they can actually catch fire! (You've noticed how hot laptop computer batteries can get.)

The main problem is the cobalt, a metal used in the manufacture of lithium batteries. Many manufacturers have been working on a solution to this problem. The most promising solution seems to be replacing the cobalt with phosphate. This produces a much safer and more reliable battery. There is some power loss as opposed to using cobalt only, but the batteries should still be a long way ahead of conventional lead-acid and NiMH batteries now used in hybrid cars. C. There are many intricacies to trouble free rv'ing

but it is our deep cycle batteries that lie at

the at the heart of "rv maintenance" confusion...

and only for one reason.

We think we understand our deep cycle batteries

when the fact of the matter is..we don't!!!

The confusion is easily understood however if you

just stop and think about it. The bulk of our

experience with lead acid batteries is with our

automobiles SLI (starting, lights, ignition)

battery. Our deep cycle battery is a lead acid

battery also and looks just like our automobiles

starting battery, but the similarities end there.

The batteries are not only very different

internally but most of the rv'ers problems with

deep cycle batteries revolve around how often

they are used and how they are maintained.

Generally our automobiles are used on a more

routine basis and are charged with a very

adequate charging system. Such is not always the

case with rv's.

Sporadic use coupled with inadequate charging

systems leads to problems, problems which can be

overcome...only however if they are recognized

and understood. This is where an understanding of

deep cycle batteries will pay dividends both in

battery efficiency and reliability. The

following statements and replies should help

clarify some common fallacies about the use and

maintenance of deep cycle batteries.

#1. The lead acid battery is one of the greatest

inventions of the 29th century.

False! Believe it or not the lead acid battery

goes back 147 years to 1859.

#2. A RV/Marine battery is a true deep cycle

battery.

Batteries are designed to help you. They store energy for your use; they allow you to start and work machines, they help you get where you’re going. Yet batteries need help to continue to function properly.

What is a battery?

A battery is a device that stores electricity through chemical changes of the materials inside of it.

How do you use a battery to produce an electric current?

Basically there are two plates, one plus and one minus, with a chemical solution between them. When you charge the battery, you put electrons into the battery through the negative terminal and take them out through the positive terminal. That causes a chemical reaction which stores the electricity.

When you use or discharge the battery, you draw the electrons from the battery through the negative terminal and put them into the battery through the positive terminal. That causes a chemical reaction which frees up the electrons that were stored earlier.

The positive pole has a shortage of electrons; the negative pole has a surplus of electrons. The electrons flow from negative to positive. That is what produces the current.

What makes a battery slow down, become weak and die?

The chemical reaction which stores electricity in the battery involves creating lead sulfate from lead or lead oxide, and sulfuric acid. Conversely, storage of the electricity (when the battery is charged) converts lead sulfate to lead oxide or lead. These reactions are reversible.

There is one tragic flaw! Lead can combine with sulfate in two different ways. The first, discussed above, is beneficial. The second way forms a crystal which does not conduct electricity and cannot be converted back to lead or lead oxide. It forms a layer on the plates which blocks the beneficial reaction from taking place. As more area is covered with this lead sulfate crystal, the battery loses power.

How does usual battery maintenance help batteries?

Usual battery maintenance consists of

* Keeping the battery clean. This removes electrical shorts on top of the battery. * Putting water in the battery to replace water that evaporates during charging and discharging. * Charging the battery after every use. This prevents to some extent the second kind of sulfate from forming.

Even if the above is done, what does usual battery maintenance fail to do?

It fails to dissolve or prevent lead sulfate crystals. They actually build up while the battery sits on the store shelf. In fact, few have ever experienced a completely “new” battery. No amount of charging and no voltage, no matter how high, will remove the second type of lead sulfate.

What can be done to help this problem?

Use Battery Life Saver, an electronic device that employs a square wave (a powerful, variable wave) to excite the crystals and cause them to dissolve. The safety circuit of the cobalt-based battery is typically limited to a charge and discharge rate of about 1C. This means that a 2400mAh 18650 cell can only be charged and discharged with a maximum current of 2.4A. Another drawback of the cobalt system is the increase of the internal resistance that occurs with cycling and aging. After 2-3 years of use, the pack often becomes unserviceable due to a high voltage drop under load that is caused by elevated internal resistance. This condition cannot be reversed.
New cathode material opened the door for higher rate capability. Moving away form cobalt also helped in lowering manufacturing costs. In 1996, scientists succeeded in using lithium manganese oxide as a cathode material. This substance forms a three-dimensional spinel structure that provides improved ion flow on the electrode. High ion flow reflects in a lower internal resistance and hence higher loading capability. Unlike the cobalt-based lithium-ion, the resistance stays low with cycling and aging. The battery does age, however, and the overall service life is similar to that of the cobalt system. A further advantage of spinel is its inherent high stability. Spinel needs less in terms of safety circuit compared to the cobalt system.

These NiCad batteries are prone to memory effect and they aren’t environment friendly as it contains heavy metals. Now battery manufactures have stopped manufacturing batteries of this type. The Nickel Metal Hydride or NiMH batteries are less likely to be prone to memory effects, but produces better power when compared to NiCad batteries. When refereeing to rechargeable batteries, we are referring to rechargeable batteries of sizes AA, AAA, C, D and 9V. These rechargeable batteries can deliver many advantages and are intended for everyday use just like the disposable or primary alkaline batteries everyone uses.

One advantage of rechargeable batteries is that they can be recharged and reused hundreds of times and the really goodones greatly outperform the everyday leading brand throwaway alkaline batteries.

Rechargeable batteries can be used over and over again which produces an incredible cost saving over their useful life. As an example, we can easily purchase 4 good AA rechargeable batteries that come with a smart charger for $30 to $40 US. For such a package deal, each AA rechargeable battery costs $10 US (including the initial charger cost ). If we reuse these rechargeable batteries a minimum of 100 times, that means that these rechargeable batteries cost less than 10 cents per use.

There are many factors not accounted for in our cost analysis, but if all these other factors were included, they would only further reduce the total per use cost well below 10 cents per use. Firstly, recently developed rechargeable batteries can easily provide 30% to 50% more energy than regular alkaline disposable batteries. Secondly, if you buy 4 more rechargeable batteries at $16 US or less, your per recharge cycle cost for these supplementary rechargeable batteries drops to less than 4 cents per use ( you already have the charger ! ). Thirdly, electricity costs are minimal considering top AA rechargeable batteries will deliver 3 Watt hours or more and electricity from the grid will cost you 6 to 10 cents per 1000 Watts per hour. Fourthly, a quality rechargeable battery may not last 1000 uses but will certainly last a lot more than 100 uses.

Another often mentioned positive reason for using rechargeable batteries is that they are considered to be more environmentally friendly than the throwaway alkaline batteries. There are pros and cons to this argument and the general practices of society and private enterprise are not really based on helping the environment. So far, helping the environment is all lip service and studies show that recycling is only an economic initiative. Over 90% of lead acid batteries are recycled (the rechargeable car battery for example) because of the economic costs of lead. This is far from the case for other rechargeable battery technology.

Dumping rechargeable batteries in with regular garbage is no better than dumping disposable alkaline batteries or any battery for that matter. Environmental friendliness has to account for the entire product life from mining to manufacturing, shipping, use and disposal. One thing is for sure, for every rechargeable battery you use, 100 or more disposable alkaline batteries are not going to the landfill.

If a quality rechargeable battery lasts 200, 300, 400 or 500 cycles, you can further divide the cost examples we just talked about by 2, 3, 4 or 5. This also applies to the number of disposable batteries that can be eliminated from the pollution factor.

Rechargeable batteries like NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) rechargeable batteries have proven that they can deliver greater performance in our ever demanding digital devices. Combined with the fact that they cost much less on a per use basis than disposable alkaline primary batteries and that less mass ends up in the landfill, leaves only one question.
