“Art” means different things to various people. It's been an enigma! Since the age of twelve I wanted to be an "artist". Over the years I had become involved with numerous "art" endeavors: drawings, sculptures, paintings in various media, architectural design, photography, writing, and ceramics. I've even been fortunate to have "art" jobs: art and photography teacher, freelance artist, supervisor of a graphic art department, museum exhibits designer and builder, and art director. In all those experiences and even through educational training beyond the master's degree I could not find a comprehensive definition of..."art". After all, I was an "artist"; but, how could I make claim to this intriguing group with out really knowing what "art" was? In the early 1990's, I participated in the Improving Visual Art Education Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, which was sponsored by the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Getty Center for the Arts. The conference basically centered around the concept of "Discipline Based Art Education". In this realm arts education is believed to have four basic tenants that should be covered in pedagogy and help give credence to spending constrained budgets on having "arts" in the public school curriculum. These four areas are: history, theory/criticism, aesthetics, and production. It was from this conference that I came up with the design for the MIA PATCH Lesson Plan for the Arts since there was no lesson plan format that I new of that really fit the "arts" education arena. One of the speakers, and I forget her name, was an aesthetics professor from the University of Minnesota. She came the closest to a definition of art that I could agree with, except, for her, art had to have a concrete artifact, an art "object", something tangible to be reviewed through time. But, as many "artists" know, sometimes an artistic creation is designed to be fugitive, non-tangible through time, it must disappear to fulfill its aesthetic intent. While out jogging one afternoon at the conference it came to me, an epiphany; "There is a simple, comprehensive definition of "art", it's an acronym for itself". The Aesthetic Rendering of Thought. In order for Art to exist, the following three (3) criteria must be met. First of all, there must be some sensory manifestation (Rendering), fugitive or permanent, that is based upon a creative, intellectual process (Thought) with the intention of a beautiful or pleasurable (Aesthetic or Anti-aesthetic) action, or reaction, in one or more of the senses and/or psyche. Encircled within this definition are more than the traditional concepts of "art": painting, sculpture, ceramics, writing, architecture, drama, music, dance, and photography. It's now easier to understand why cooking can be included as an "art" and more than just a craft. Please do not confuse "craft" with "art". Art objects are original creations, one of a kind. Craft, on the other hand, is the fastidious copying, reproduction, of an art object.

Nonrepresentational or nonobjective art is not an invention of the twentieth century. A number of cultures, like the Islamic and Jewish, have developed over the centuries a high standard of decorative or non-figurative art forms. Today, abstract art is generally understood to be the form of art that does not depict objects in the natural world, but instead uses shapes and colors in a nonrepresentational or subjective way. According to art experts, in its purest form in Western art, an abstract art is one without a recognizable subject, one which does not relate to something external. This type of ornamental art, without figurative representation occurs today in many cultures. As the modern abstract movement in sculpture and paining emerged in Europe and North America between 1910 and 1920, two approaches have been generally accepted to produce different abstract styles: images that have been "abstracted" from nature to the point where they no longer reflect a conventional reality, and nonobjective, or "pure" art forms, which do not share any reference to reality. A further distinction tends to be made between abstract art which is geometric, such as the work of Piet Mondrian, and abstract art that is more fluid, such as in the works of Wassily Kandinsky. It was Kandinsky who once said that "of all arts, abstract painting is the most difficult. It demands that you know to draw well, that you have a heightened sensitivity for composition and of colors, and that you are a true poet; this last is essential." Abstract art began in the avant-garde movements of the late 19th century -Impressionism, neo-Impressionism, and post-Impressionism. These painting styles reduced the importance of the original subject matter and began to emphasize the creative process of painting itself. As artists in Europe at the early twentieth century "broke free" from the conventional representational rules art forms had to follow, figurative abstractions, or simplifications of reality, where detail is eliminated from recognizable objects leaving only the essence or some degree of recognizable form, became popular increasing the variations of art forms and view points. With different abstract styles, like Synchronism and Orphism, abstract art emphasized on color over form, on feelings over logic. The action painting of an American Abstract Expressionist, Jackson Pollock, who dripped, dropped, smeared, spattered, or thrown paint on the canvas, is a good example of such a tremendous change in art focus and technique. After the introduction of technology and the mass utilization of software programs that assisted people "play around" with their own photographs, paintings or other art forms, abstract art has gained more popularity than ever before. But although being able to draw well is not an issue anymore, as Kandinsky pointed out, being a "true" poet is what still separates the amateur attempts to create abstract art from the artifacts of a true talent.

Indian Art Art refers to a product of human’s creativity. Man produces a plethora of objects that reflects beauty, tradition, culture and emotions with his imaginations, creativity and artistry. The concept of art was originated in India during Indus Valley Civilization and since then it has revolved around cultural affairs, religious beliefs, local needs of Indian people and royal lifestyle. The Indus Valley Civilization has witnessed the making of vibrant and exquisite pottery, sculpture and jewelry. In the later years during the Vedic Period some kind of technical expertise was added in pottery making, weaving and wood crafting. Furthermore, the idea and concept of art was widespread and during the Gupta Period the craft tradition of India showed a major boost. Ajanta and Ellora is the live example of Indian art and craft. Today, the expertise in art and craft have revealed their creativity and craftsmanship in a huge range of products like almirah, cabinets, paintings, sculptures, pots, jewelry, decors, pillars and many more. Apart from these there are many other kinds of art works like typography, needlework, patch work, lace making, paper marbling, leather carving, glass blowing, wood burning, miniatures, appliqué and many more in various hues, designs and intricate patterns. These enduring artifacts produced by Indians captivate the aesthetics of modern man round the globe. Indian art and craft industry have developed a niche on the platform of art and craft. The industry produces various exclusive art pieces that are acclaimed all over the world for its diversity and uniqueness. Some of the most authenticate and true artists of Indian art industry are Amrita Shergil, Ravi Varma, Tyeb Mehta and M.F.Husain. These Indian artists have gained accolades in the international arena. With the passage of time art started revolving around the actual life of human beings and became an asset for investment. Over the last 50 years the significance and demand of the artworks have increased. Due to this the industry has witnessed a steady increase in the prices and thereby many people have become keen to invest in flourishing Indian art. People are investing in art because art is the only survival during economic breakdown. Many investment sectors break down during economic downturn and the market rates are at the lowest. On the hand, art investment keeps on rising as it has nothing to do with the market shares and prices. Art values are rising on a high scale and can prove to be rewarding in the long run. The hidden values like popularity of the artist, history of the artwork, quality of the work, number of exhibitions held by that artist and the previous work of that particular artist should be considered before investing in art. These hidden values help an individual to achieve greater returns over a prolonged period of time. India is known for its diversity in culture and tradition that is highly reflected in various forms of Indian art. The Indian art industry is estimated to be over INR 500 crores with an annual growth of 35-40% per year. Indian art holds the top position in the art industry of the world. No country can beat the aesthetics and uniqueness of Indian art and Indian artists.

Saatchi Gallery represents the one of the world’s most modern museums of art and is a refreshing addition as one that was made specifically for those who enjoy art in all its styles and types. It caters to the desires and needs of a wide range of art lovers, from students needing to be exposed to the different genres represented in art to young artists needing a place to exhibit their work. It aids in the development of young talent and deepens (formal and informal) students’ appreciation of the contemporary aesthetic depicted in the work and ideologies of contemporary artists. Yet, the museum also extends its influence and aid into the realm of non-traditional art, such as fashion designing and the performing arts. In fact, these artists are supported not just in procuring them an audience for their work, but also in facilitating the purchase of art pieces via the Saatchi interface, which eliminates the middle-man and renders the compensation over to the appropriate artist commission free. The resources available on the Saatchi website are many, as it houses the Stuart Museum that is specifically designated for student artists or recent graduates as a place where they are free to upload their work for public viewing, critiquing, and feedback. Saatchi Gallery’s gift to the artistic public is valuable in that it offers a new generation of artists and art lovers access to the cutting edge of creativity. However, it allows for the personal and professional growth of the young artist too, by giving them the opportunity to interact with the public in colloquy, conference, as well as business settings. Therefore, through the resources provided by this gallery, students become more cultured in their exposure to contemporary art, and young creative people gain valuable, professional skills that will last them a lifetime.

The number of art schools have grown rapidly during the last couple of decades. If you are looking for a higher education in art, there are art colleges with excellent reputation in the US as well as internationally. If you are thinking of an art education, do your research properly, research your favourite artists and find out where they have been studying. There are plenty of information about this on the net for you to find out about these sources. So, what are the prospects of working as a fine artist today? Well, the main thing is that you have to be prepared to work hard. The competition for grants and galleries are very sharp, so you have to have a mind set on hard work and competition. If you start to do well on the art market after some years, you have good prospects of making a good living of what you are doing. It's common for artists to work as teachers to have an income. Museums and art institutions also often have artists working for them in different projects. So as you can see, there are possibilities in the field of fine arts (even if your parents claim there's not). Contemporary art is a wide range of techniques and approaches, and maybe you will change your path during your studies. You might start interested in installations and sculpture, and ending working with video at your graduation. It's important to keep focused on what you are doing whatever you are choosing. Ideas and concepts are the most important things and the technique you may vary, but you have to have the technical skills for it, to be able to create relevant art. So just work hard, believe in your ideas and you will make it.

The resource that the Saatchi Gallery provides to other art galleries around the world is invaluable. To those who own galleries and are highly interested in the contemporary art scene, the Saatchi Gallery provides the exposure and the information necessary to create and maintain a high profile gallery. Rather than compete with galleries around the world, Saatchi collaborates with them to provide them with international recognition on the global art market. The gallery allows other gallery directors to provide information about their art shop on the Saatchi website and also to provide links to their galleries via the Saatchi website. Since Saatchi caters to a growing international viewing audience of potentially millions of persons, all those viewers immediately become potential clients of the galleries that choose to be hosted on the Saatchi site. Saatchi hosts links to the most prestigious galleries around the world, and facilitates the creation of sub-galleries for schools, colleges, and other artistic institutions. In fact, it caters to a wide variety of schools (primary to university level) and to the public at large, so that its collection is the largest available on the internet. Being a gallery itself, Saatchi also hosts the works of individual artists. Plus, Saatchi takes it one step further than brick-and-mortar art galleries by allowing artists to sell their work online free of commission. The gallery is therefore a large and all-inclusive contemporary art hub that provides the viewing public with a link to the widest variety of art and art galleries that currently exists on the internet.

To get the most out of your visits to the local museum or art gallery, learn to understand the language of art to find out what the artist is trying to communicate. Art appreciation allows you to have an informed opinion about works of art. It doesn't mean you have to like all of them, but hopefully see them in a new light. It may seem obvious, but the title of the work can tell you what the artist wanted to describe by creating the art work. Sometimes the title will be obvious, but sometimes it may seem to bear little resemblance to the finished object. In this case, look for some similarity or connection that the artist found important enough to stress or exaggerate, and think about why the artist chose to isolate that particular feature of the subject or scene. Perhaps it sums up something important, distilling the subject down to what the artist feels to be its essence. It has been said that art consists of form and content. Form describes the materials used and the way in which they are arranged, while content describes the subject matter. Content is the idea behind the art, what the artist intended to portray, and whether or not the communication is particularly successful, due to audience perception and reaction. Content describes both the intended and actual messages. When interpreting a work of art, think about how you would have represented the subject compared to the artist whose work you are viewing. Perhaps you would have shown the subject differently, or stressed another feature. Since no artist lives in a vacuum, content is influenced by the artist's personal and social milieu. Learn about the artist and his or her society to understand where the art came from and why. For instance, medieval art often contains religious icons which were rich in symbolism at the time the art was created, but which trigger few associations in modern viewers. To understand art from ages past, it helps to have some knowledge of history. In medieval paintings, the same symbols appear repetitively, and there are lexicons which can pinpoint the meaning of each symbol, for instance a white rose, which may have deeper meaning than just a decorative item. The surrealist paintings of Hieronymus Bosch, for example, are packed with these symbolic items. Also, many medieval paintings were commissioned by the Catholic Church, so the multitude of religious paintings from this era does not necessarily mean that artists were personally preoccupied with religion, just that this subject was what they was paid to present. Personal characteristics can also be expressed by art. Vincent Van Gogh's use of swirling colors may have stemmed from his epilepsy, which often causes suffers to see auras around objects. Political ideas may also find expression in art. One example is "Guernica", the semi-abstract mural by Pablo Picasso, which is an expression of outrage against the bombing of a small Basque village in Picasso's native Spain during the Spanish Civil War. The horrors of war are clearly expressed by the agonized animals and humans in the painting. Even modern paintings feature era-specific symbols; for example, in Andy Warhol's paintings soup cans and movie stars are both presented as packaged goods, larger than life, products of the 20th century advertising juggernaut that pitches all sorts of goods for both consumption and entertainment. Knowing a bit about the artist's society will also prevent you from attaching great meaning to stylistic features which may be common to most of the artwork of that era or country. For instance, most ancestor portraits from Europe show people with serious expressions, with no wide smiles. However, it was simply the fashion to paint portraits in this manner, and it does not indicate that the artist wanted to communicate that these subjects were especially gloomy individuals.

Ultimately, as a result of their exhibition of their work in the Saatchi Gallery, many of these new artists are offered the opportunity to conduct showings in galleries locally or internationally. The gallery’s new home, located at http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/ is of a stylish and modern architectural design that heralds the museum-quality work of the artists hosted within. This twenty-year-old gallery has grown over the years to accommodate approximately 600,000 annual visitors and 1000 annual school visits. It collaborates with the media to facilitate and host a wide variety of shows that put even more effort into showcasing the work of these talented artists. These shows have benefited from the input of such media houses as The Evening Standard, The Observer, and Time Out. This has led to a vast increase in the viewing audience in Britain, around Europe, and even to increases in international visits. This is the kind of public awareness for which Saatchi regularly campaigns on behalf of the artists whose works are hosted within the gallery. It represents a truly contemporary, businesslike, and professional approach to art promotion that brings artists and viewers together in a productive fashion.

The Saatchi Gallery online portfolio is a special resource provided to schools at the primary and high levels that are interested in boosting the confidence and promoting the talents of their artistically inclined students. The art teacher or the school’s artistic representative is given the opportunity to create detailed profiles for their schools and thereby to promote the artistic endeavours of the school as evidence of the school’s diverse educational curriculum. Along with the school’s profile, the portfolio allows institution representatives to call attention to the work of its talented students by uploading samples of these works along with biographical profiles of the students responsible for the pieces. The institutions are also encouraged to upload notices and descriptions of upcoming and past artistic events that demonstrate the school’s commitment to the arts. The Saatchi Portfolio is therefore a strong marketing tool that promotes the educational institution on a grand artistic scale. However, the Saatchi Gallery goes further to promote and encourage the talent of these young and promising artists. It puts on regular competitions that generate prizes of great value to the future career of these individuals. Winners and runners up are given cash for use in purchasing art supplies, including computers, to enhance their potential as artists. The winning schools are also given monetary compensation to be used to equip their art departments, making them more conducive to the learning and practice of art. The Saatchi portfolio resource is performed as a community service gesture whose purpose is to return benefits to the institutions that gave many successful artists support in the past. The Portfolio also exists to secure the future of art by encouraging the youth in artistic endeavours.

[Published on 05 Sep 2007, the day India celebrates Teacher’s Day] What is Art ? Art is a skilled exercise of human faculties... It refers to the creation of something aesthetically satisfying. According to an idealistic view, art is only completely expressed when material is re-formed, re-created, re-fused, by divine afflatus.(Everymans Encyclopaedia) In the broadest sense art refers to expressions of spiritual as opposed to material, consciousness of perception... deals with what is beyond , or outside the possibility of demonstrating by mechanical or scientific testing... being concerned with the expression of imagination and the translation of emotion.(Practical Knowledge of Art) There are , I believe, several things to be considered before classifying something as art. Mainly there are two implications of calling something an art- only a few people possesses the skills required to be called ‘artists’, and even the artists find it difficult to describe their artistry and pass it on only by acting as models to imitate. Teaching & Art In ordinary conversation it is not uncommon for teaching to be referred to as art. Some arrive at this view after considerable thought and it will invariably be based on a carefully developed concept of teaching . If teaching is considered an art , it goes without saying that it requires long practice for its perfection . Teaching is complex, if we consider the fact that the object in teaching is never static ; it is a living process that is coloured by the past experience as well as the present mood of the learner. In many ways the teacher is a craftsman. But a true craftsman must be free to express himself within the principles which govern his work. Just as the most original painter is governed by laws of perspective, by laws of colour mixture add by laws of colour perception, so the teacher is governed by the nature of the human material with which he works, by the nature of the material he teaches, and by the ultimate aim which he accepts as the goal of his efforts. What does an artist working on clay or wood do? He handles dead material and imparts life to it through his work . He gives the shape he likes, expresses his own ideas and makes the object as he likes. He imposes his will on the material with which he works, and creates an object. Is teacher an artist? Well... the teacher doesn’t use the chisel and hammer...yet he makes an impact felt. He creates learning situations ,motivates, arranges conditions for the mind and body to grow, introduces changes in the behaviour pattern, and inspires noble thoughts and feelings. So... don’t you , dear reader, agree that the teacher is an artist too...??? * * * * * * Author Profile The author, C. Praveen an ELT consultant, has been teaching English since 1987. Art Nouveau is an international style of art, architecture and design that peaked in popularity at the beginning of the 20th century (1880-1914) and is characterized by highly-stylised, flowing, curvilinear designs often incorporating floral and other plant-inspired motifs. Art Nouveau was a concerted attempt to create an international style based on decoration. It was developed by a brilliant and energetic generation of artists and designers, who sought to fashion an art form appropriate to the modern age. Over the years, there have been many influential artistic movements and Art Nouveau being one of the most popular with the general public. Artists, architects and designers all fell under its spell during the 1880s, producing highly stylized pieces of work. Examples of magnificent buildings in the style can be found all over Europe, particularly in Paris, Prague, Budapest, Barcelona and Berlin. Other locations, such as London, New York City and St. Petersburg also have landmarks in the style. During the World's Fair in Paris in 1900, the movement was brought a wider audience in fair. Art Nouveau embraced the modern use of technology on materials such as stained glass and wrought iron, which were used extensively in sculpture and functional items. A classic tradition was observed too in the use of motifs from the natural world, such as flowers or insects. Furniture, jewelry, lighting, textiles and posters were all part of the style. And one of the famous architect of the movement is Antoni Gaudi, and still celebrated today for his eccentric buildings in Barcelona. Gaudi was a man of simple ideas and common sense. In his architecture it fuses structure and decoration. He clearly accepted nature as his guide. His interest in nature was in three dimensional forms, rather than in two dimensional and he was interested primarily in nature’s inner forces, which expressed themselves on the surface. He took the style to new heights, never making a straight line where a wavy one could do the job. His crowning glory was the city cathedral, left unfinished at the time of his death. Charles Rennie Mackintosh was one of the leading exponents and a designer from Glasgow in Scotland. He brought his distinctive ideas to buildings, furniture and jewelry. Examples of his work are held in museums and his jewelry is constantly copied and sold. The French designer Rene Lalique was also a jewelry maker in the Art Noveau style and he also became famous for his work in glass making. Well, many artists in the genre remain popular today and none more so than Gustav Klimt. The Austrian specialized in the female figure in paintings, drawings and murals. Some of his paintings have sold for extremely high prices and his work is mass produced in the form of prints, posters and furnishings. Aubrey Beardsley, an English artist and illustrator, is also still popular today. He is mostly known for his posters, drawn in ink and sometimes depicting controversial images. By the time when the world War 1 was begin, the movement was fade. Times were hard and less expensive materials were favored. A more modernist and less fussy design style came into favor, culminating in the Art Deco movement that would dominate through the 1920s and 1930s. There does remain, however, a nostalgic affection for Art Nouveau and the many expressive people caught up in it.

The Saatchi Gallery’s artistic versatility dictates its open attitude toward art, and this attitude is present in its welcoming posture toward the work of photographers around the world. The gallery opens its doors to photographers who have been widely unrecognised in their circles and provides a source of promotion and exposure to these young, talented persons. This offer is inclusive of photo artists from countries all around the world. At Saatchi Online, artistic photographers are encouraged to upload their photographs and place them on display for the millions of potential art enthusiasts on the internet. Images must be uploaded as jpg files and the sizes of these files should be below 2MB. This opportunity given free of charge by Saatchi not only allows these photographers to increase their standing as renowned artists, but it also allows them to enter into the professional artistic realm by making (or arranging for) commission-free online sales. Photographers are also free to create their own profile package online. Therefore, not only do viewers and potential buyers get the chance to review a wide range of their works (as many as eight pieces are accepted), but they are also able to offer the public significant information about themselves and their art. In addition to the services mentioned, Saatchi also allows the photographers to get messages from those interested in their art—such as viewers, fellow photographers, and even potential buyers. Therefore, this improves the artists’ ability to network in this scene where fellow artists, a potential source of inspiration, may be difficult to find. The Saatchi service to photographers may therefore be considered an ultimate method of artist promotion.

Colleges and universities will find the Saatchi Gallery a very valuable resource to boost the appreciation and renown of their art, fashion and performing arts departments. Saatchi caters to these institutions on an international scale, and provides them the impetus and exposure they need in order to present their departments to the public as a progressive arm of the institution. The Saatchi Gallery caters specifically to the effort to market these institutions by welcoming posts and sample work from the students and faculty, allowing these parties to showcase their work on the internationally recognised website. Representatives of each university are empowered to upload material in the form of photos, videos or scanned art work to the site as a method of drawing attention to the abilities of their students and the expertise of the faculty that grooms them. On the Saatchi Gallery website, colleges and universities have the freedom to highlight the achievements of their faculty members as well as the unique talents of their students. Yet they may also offer descriptions of their artistic programs, give information about their institutions’ location, and even provide links to their websites. The gallery is a supreme marketing tool because it provides a hub to which thousands of prospective students (and other persons interested in art) come to do research and locate educational institutions in which they may be groomed in the arts. It also provides critics with a method of gauging the artistic talents of a wide range of students without the need to travel, and therefore may afford your institution the recognition it would not otherwise have had. It also gives colleges and universities the chance of being recognised in an international gallery without incurring any expenses—as registration on the Saatchi Gallery’s site is always free of charge.

Most kids I've come across including when I was a kid love to draw, doodle or paint; it seems like we're all born with this love for the most part and as we grow up, sometimes that love dwindles, goes away all together or remains with us. The reasons for the different aspects of art leaving our lives as we grow up are many and varied; they can range from just plain losing interest, becoming frustrated enough as we get older that we're not happy with our work and we move onto something else that we're better at and sometimes it's simply due to lack of encouragement by the grown-ups around us including parents. I will tell you though why I think it's so important to keep encouraging a child's artwork, whether it's painting, fingerpainting, drawing, doodling, etc. It's a huge boost to their self-esteem; you don't have to be great at art and let's face it, there's only so many child prodigies out there that are exceptionally gifted from the onset; art is about so much more than having something you can tell what it is or define in a nice little niche. Art is about the soul; it's where a person's creativity sparks and is allowed to express itself without any hindrance or fast set rules. Another wonderful reason to encourage a child is something we might overlook on occasion. Children, no matter their age, have a hard time expressing themselves verbally- let's face it MOST adults aren't exactly great in this area either; hence why so many arguments are started, divorces happen, etc. Now if something is really bothering the child or is worrying them, how do you think they might express it? You guessed it right!! with their Art! Art is a wonderful way to express your emotions and children do this all the time; now am I suggesting that you start to analyze each piece your child draws, paints or sculpts out of play-dough? Of course not! What I am saying though is that if a child is open to art, enjoys creating, this is another outlet for them to use when they're troubled about something rather than locking it up inside where it can do real damage. Personally, I think that's something a lot of adults need or should realize as well. Personally, I like to use myself for an example on this sort of situation; I always enjoyed drawing & doodling for most of my life but was never into it enough to pursue it passionately till a few years ago; this wasn't due to my parents lack of encouragement; they always thought my work was the greatest even when it really wasn't. I hate to say it but I just was never interested enough in it to pursue it continously although I always did add a touch of art to most things I did, whether it was designing my folders I used for school to even one time painting a pair of my shoes partly gold to make them unique hehe. Look at me now, I'm a graphic designer/digital painter and rarely go an entire day without trying my hand at something creative unless I'm in a tremendous creative block in which case I do take a breather so as to keep the frustration from building up. Naturally, not every child who dabbles in art will become an artist, writer or what have you but by allowing them the opportunity to explore their creativity, their imagination throughout their life through art, no matter the form, you will be helping to raise a human being who will be open to new ideas, explore new paths, never lose their sense of wonder and no matter what career they pursue as they grow up these sorts of qualities will be of a tremendous boom to them and will give them both an edge & an outlet for when things get tough and seem overwhelming.
