Addressing Organizational Conflict

Greg Giesen Business/Business 2007-07-26
View Detail

All too often organizations cry out for what I call the quick fix. You know the scenario: two employees not getting along, probably personality differences, not real receptive to previous internal interventions, etc., so the organization decides to bring in outside help to fix the problem. Sound familiar?

I call it the quick fix because the conflict between the two employees may also be a symptom of a much larger organizational problem, or, as I like to call it, a system malfunction. In this scenario, a system malfunction can be a direct result of poor leadership, dysfunctional work groups, inadequate performance management processes and/or a general lack of soft skills training and resources for employees on the part of the organization.

Now do not get me wrong. It is very important to address the actual conflicts between employees and to help them reach acceptable resolutions, etc. However, it would be a mistake for an organization to limit the scope of a conflict resolution to the immediate conflicting employees without also being willing to look at the surrounding system where the conflict resides in. Without a more thorough assessment, an organization can easily get into the habit of treating the symptom while ignoring the problem.

In order to assess if there are organizational factors that are contributing to the conflict(s), consider investigating the following checkpoints:

Checkpoint 1: Is adequate leadership within the organization and department being demonstrated?

The leader (i.e., supervisor/manager) of the employees in conflict is the first place to check to assess whether the conflict is a symptom of a bigger problem or merely an isolated event. Things to look for include:

-What previous efforts have been made by the leader to address the conflict and with what results?

-Is the leader comfortable with conflict resolution?

-Is the leader role-modeling effective conflict resolution skills?

-What has the leader done to create a supportive environment within their group for effective conflict resolution?

-Is the leader consistent in how he/she addresses conflicts?

-Is the leader being held accountable by their supervisor in effectively addressing conflict resolution issues in their area?

-Are effective conflict resolution skills being practiced by the CEO and his/her senior management team?

The leadership factor is the most important predictor of how conflict will be handled within a given department and/or organization. If a supervisor/manager is ineffective in handling conflict, it is possible that their supervisor/manager may not be providing adequate coaching or guidance to them. If not, the problem has now expanded to the next level of leadership. Sometimes this can be traced all the way up to the CEO.

Checkpoint 2: Do co-workers/team members foster a supportive environment for conflict resolution or a non-supportive environment?

In my opinion, the co-workers/team members (including those directly involved in the conflict) must also share the responsibility for the interpersonal dynamics (good and bad) that occur within their own group. Hence, here are some of the things to look for:

-What previous efforts have been made by individuals or the group to address the conflict and with what results?

-What are the defined or undefined group norms around conflict, if at all?

-Who is impacted by the conflict in question?

-What is not happening that needs to happen in this group around conflict resolution?

-How does the group, as well as the conflicting parties, see the role of the leader in all of this. Effective? Ineffective? What guidance and support does the group feel they still need from the leader and the organization?

Of course the leader, as mentioned, is critical in creating a supportive environment for effective conflict resolution but that does not let the group or the conflicting individuals off the hook. There needs to be a collaborative effort in this process.

Checkpoint 3: Is there an accountability factor in the organization that supports teamwork and good communication skills?

The organization itself plays a critical role in defining appropriate and inappropriate behaviors in the workplace. Clearly, what gets reinforced is the behavior that gets exhibited. Specifically:

-Are the desired conflict resolution skills (particularly around teamwork and communication) reflected as criteria in the performance review process?

-Are there organizational core values? If so, are they reflected within the performance review process?

-Are department or team norms identified and established around conflict resolution? If so, are they followed in a consistent manner?

-Is peer input part of the performance review process? If not, would it make a difference?

-Is the disciplinary process ever used for employees who exhibit poor communication and/or cooperation skills?

The performance review/management process must reflect the desired skill sets required for effective conflict resolution. Here I am talking about teaming skills, communication and problem-solving, collaborative and listening skills, to name a few. If organizations fail to acknowledge and create accountability around these types of skills amongst their employees, then those same organizations are contradicting themselves when they say they want to create an environment that fosters effective communication and conflict resolution.

Checkpoint 4: Is the organization (at all levels) providing soft skill training/resources on an ongoing basis?

Maintaining effective working relationships is ongoing work. This can only occur with a proactive philosophy instead of a reactive philosophy when it comes to effective communication and conflict resolution skills. One way to do this is to provide adequate soft skill training and resources for all employees (and I am not talking about once every five years). Here is what to look for:

-What soft skill training opportunities are made available to all employees within the organization?

-How often are opportunities made available to employees to better themselves both personally and professionally?

-What resources are made available to employees to help in the area of interpersonal communication, teamwork and conflict resolution?

-From an organizational standpoint, what is not happening that needs to happen in order for the conflict resolution process to be improved?

-Are leaders/managers/supervisors provided ongoing training and development to better themselves, especially in the soft skills area?

Proficiency in the soft skills area requires time, effort and practice. Unless organizations are willing to provide opportunities for their employees to grow and develop in these areas, it will be difficult to empower these same employees to effectively resolve their own conflicts, with or without the help of their respective supervisors.

So what does this all mean?

If any one of the four checkpoints above is suspect within a given organization, there is a pretty good chance that the conflicts that arise within those organizations will be symptoms of a bigger system malfunction. If two or more of the checkpoints are lacking within an organization, the organization itself is where the help is most needed.

So the next time there is a conflict within your organization, be sure to investigate whether the conflict is an isolated event or a system malfunction in need of attention. You might be surprised by what you find.

Addressing your wedding invitations can seem a little confusing at first. Hopefully this guide will help you easily understand how to address and assemble your wedding invitations.

Addressing Etiquette

The outer envelope should list the name and complete address of the recipient while the inner envelope lists only the names. No abbreviations should be used when addressing wedding invitations, except for Mr., Mrs., Ms., and Jr. State names should be spelled out.

Type of Guests

Married Couple
Outer envelope: Mr. and Mrs. Ted Jones
Inner envelope: Mr. and Mrs. Jones

If you are invited children under 18 to the wedding, the outer envelope should be addressed to the parents only, as indicated above. The inner envelope should list the children's first names (in order from oldest to youngest) on one line below the parent's names, such as:

Mr. and Mrs. Ted Jones Charles, Michael and Samantha

Children over the age of 18 should receive their own invitation, even if they still live with their parents.

Unmarried Female
Outer envelope: Miss (or Ms.) Susan Smith
Inner envelope: Miss (or Ms.) Smith (and Guest)

Unmarried Male
Outer envelope: Mr. Thomas Lipton
Inner envelope: Mr. Lipton (and Guest)

The "and Guest" is optional when inviting single friends to your wedding. However if the person is in a serious relationship, it's proper etiquette to allow him/her to bring a guest.

Unmarried couples who live together should receive one invitation, where their names are listed on separate lines in alphabetical order. Unmarried couples who live separately should receive one invitation addressed to the guest who is closest to you on the outer envelope. On the inner envelope, both names should be listed on separate lines in alphabetical order.

Medical Doctor (Married)
Outer envelope: Doctor and Mrs. Larry Thompson
Inner envelope: Doctor and Mrs. Thompson

Medical Doctor (Unmarried)
Outer envelope: Doctor Larry Thompson
Inner envelope: Doctor Thompson (and Guest)

Doctor (PhD, Married)
Outer envelope: Dr. and Mrs. William Fremont
Inner envelope: Dr. and Mrs. Fremont

Doctor (PhD, Unmarried)
Outer envelope: Dr. William Fremont
Inner envelope: Dr. Fremont (and Guest)

Sending Your Wedding Invitations

Order your wedding invitations three to four months prior to your wedding. Order 20% more than your number of guests to allow for errors and additions. Send the wedding invitations six to eight weeks before your wedding date.

Assembling Your Wedding Invitations

Ask your mother or your maid-of-honor to help you assemble the wedding invitations. Lay everything out on a long table in assembly line fashion. If your invitations are single fold and the wording is on the outside of the invitation only, then your enclosures are placed on top of the invitation. If your invitations are multi-fold and/or the wording is inside the fold then enclosures are placed inside the first fold.

Enclosures are placed in the following order from the bottom to the top:

* Tissue paper
* Reception card
* Map
* Response envelope (self-addressed and stamped)
* Response card tucked neatly under the flap of the response envelope

Place the enclosures and the invitation inside the inner envelope with the print side facing the flap.

Do not seal the inner envelope.

Place the inner envelope inside the outer envelope with its flap facing the front of the outer envelope.

Before you begin, count all the parts of the invitations to make sure you are starting with equal amounts. Assemble each invitation as indicated above but do not seal the outer envelopes. Once you are done assembling the invitations, make sure all your counts are even. If they are, you can seal the outer envelopes. If not, you have made a mistake and will need to find which envelope is missing a component.

Addressing Sterility With Natural Treatments

David Cowley Health Fitness/Health Fitness 2008-04-28
View Detail
For couples that are trying to get pregnant, addressing the issue of sterility can be a difficult one. Negative pregnancy test after test can be devastating and hope can dwindle after months of expectations being dashed. And while there are many medical treatment options available for couples there are also many treatments for sterility that can help as well.
Some lifestyle choices can actually be causing one's sterility. For instance, smoking is dangerous for both men and women. The poison that is contained in the nicotine of the cigarettes is absorbed very quickly into the bloodstream and from there travels to every system of the body, including the reproductive system. Smoking can damage a man's sperm count and also damage the sperm that's left. Good blood circulation is important for both a woman's ability to conceive and man's ability to impregnate a woman and smoking interferes with blood circulation more than anything. Any couple facing the issue of sterility is always advised to stop smoking before they do anything else.
It's true that some couples also think that they're facing sterility when in reality they just have less of a chance of getting pregnant than other couples. Pregnancy is not a guarantee even when a healthy man and woman engage in sexual activity; it's a game of chance no matter what. In order to increase the odds of a pregnancy, many couples are advised to simply increase their sexual activity! As a matter of fact, a couple is not technically considered infertile unless they are having sexual relations at least twice per week for an entire year and still have not gotten pregnant. A month or two without a pregnancy, or sexual activity that is more infrequent than that does not add up to sterility for any couple.
There are many herbs that also seem to address sterility in both men and women by balancing hormone levels and also by calming both individuals. These herbal remedies include black cohosh, Siberian ginseng, and chaste berry. The ginseng seems to be the most effective as it supports healthy blood flow to all parts of the body including the reproductive systems. Chaste berry is valued for its antioxidant properties so that healthy cells are protected and repaired. Zinc is also found in very high and active concentrations throughout the male reproductive system in healthy males.
Vitamin B aids in the production of anti stress hormones and lowers high blood pressure and improves blood flow throughout the human body. Vitamin E supplies oxygen to the heart and other muscles in the body and improves circulation. Potassium is essential for proper fluid balance in the body. Amino Acid supplements are essential components of enzymes, hormones and body fluids.
Many are also turning to acupuncture as a form of sterility treatment. While there is always controversy over the effectiveness of acupuncture, it is believed to help with blood circulation and to numb painful areas of the body as well. This helps patients to relax and maintain health overall, including in the reproductive system.
Doctors can also recommend medication treatment options for sterility but these are usually harsh and invasive. It may be better for any couple trying to get pregnant to try these natural remedies and options first.
Always consult your doctor before using this information.

Addressing Safety Concerns With Botox

Kendra Wagner Health Fitness/Health Fitness 2007-11-12
View Detail

While initially introduced as a treatment for neurological disorders, BOTOX has rapidly grown into one of the most popular cosmetic procedures available today. Millions of people have opted to try this quick approach for minimizing the appearance of laugh lines, crow's feet and brow wrinkles. Some people choose the BOTOX procedure alone, while others have found that combining it with other wrinkle-reducing treatments leads to outstanding results. However, it is also important to consider some of the potential risks and side effects of BOTOX before deciding if this treatment is right for you.

Possible Side Effects of BOTOX

One of the biggest safety concerns many potential patients have is the risk of potential side effects. While BOTOX has a demonstrated history of being a very safe cosmetic procedure, there are still complications that may arise in some cases. Some of the possible risks include numbness at the injection site, allergic reactions, bruising, swelling and nausea. In reality, most of these symptoms are relatively minor and temporary, often dissipating just a few hours after the BOTOX injection.

Reducing the Risk of BOTOX

While you may experience some side effects following your BOTOX procedure, there are steps you can take to address any major safety concerns. First, start by always choosing a doctor who is skilled and experienced. Select a number of potential candidates, and then start asking questions about the number of procedures each surgeon has performed, years of experience and success rates.

Once you have selected a qualified doctor, it is important to follow the safety precautions that he or she provides. Generally, your doctor will advise you to avoid touching or rubbing the injection site for at least a few days following the treatment. Your doctor may also recommend that you avoid perfume and skin lotions for a few days in order to avoid irritating the injection site.

Inform Your Doctor About Your Health

Another important safety concern that must be addressed before undergoing BOTOX treatment is possible health conditions or medications that may interact with the procedure. In order to avoid potential complications, always information your cosmetic surgeon about any medical conditions you have had now or in the past. Next, be sure to tell your doctor about any medications, vitamins or herbal supplements that you are taking.

BOTOX can be a highly effective way to reduce the signs of aging, but you should always consider all of the potential safety concerns. Fortunately, BOTOX has been shown to be a very safe treatment in more than 200 studies and millions of clinical cases. While you may experience some minor side effects after the BOTOX injection, such as mild bruising or swelling, these symptoms disappear quite quickly and can always be covered with makeup.

Addressing Climate Change Requires Quiet

Kevin Surace Home Family/Home Family 2007-09-25
View Detail
As the world awakens to the emergency of climate change, we must begin to look at every facet of life to see things that are right in front of us, but unobvious. CO2 and other greenhouse gases have clearly and undeniably changed our climate forever. A rise in temperatures and sea level are guaranteed at this point. The question is not if, but when.

Americans in particular have enjoyed sprawling communities far from the workplace for the better part of 50 years. We have become used to large houses on quiet streets, far from the action and noise of the city. And we have become used to longer commutes, 25% longer than a few decades ago with some over 60 minutes in each direction. Wasting the little time we have and belching CO2 the whole way there...and back.

Recently, there has been a move back to cities, in high quality multifamily and mixed use communities, especially by the younger generation. They enjoy the activities, proximity to entertainment, and easy maintenance this style of living bring. And it turns out that this alone could reduce CO2 by 30% or more, very rapidly. High quality multifamily projects in urban environments help in several dramatic ways. To start, most people who live there also work close by. They take public transportation daily or walk or ride a bike. Taking millions of cars off the road every day.

The dwellings are beautiful and upscale but significantly smaller than a single free standing house. They are built tighter, with more insulation, and the heating can be very efficient with most heat loss occurring into an adjacent unit (this sharing some energy). The CO2 generated due to the heating and cooling of condo's can be 70% less than a single family home. The amount of lawn to water is close to zero (saving CO2 from pumping the water to the home and also saving precious clean water). And the amount of materials used to build a condo versus a single family home can be 30% to 50% less, saving in CO2 from manufacturing these items (a major source of CO2 actually) as well as the transportation to the jobsite and installation time and energy.

Without questions, one of the best moves a person can make to have a major impact on the environment is to purchase a condo or townhome in an urban setting. If everyone in the US lived in this way, we could cut carbon emissions by 1B metric tons or more. That is about what Italy and the UK generate as a whole combined.

But today, the number one complaint of occupants is noise. And it is this noise that keeps people from moving into urban environments, and thus continuing to generate more CO2. Noise from the street, noise from neighbors, noise when you are trying to sleep.

According to a 2007 report by the World Health Organization, excessive noise in everyday life is not only responsible for unhappiness, poor learning, poor concentration, stress, poor sleep and overall crankiness...but it is also responsible for deaths. Yes, you read it correctly, deaths. How many deaths? According to the report, 3% of heart attack deaths can be attributed to noise in everyday life. The stress and sleep deprivation caused by everyday noise in urban environments is responsible for tens of thousands of premature deaths annually. That is a wake up call.

What to do? Well, new technology now exists to deal with both street noise as well as neighbor (party wall) noise. Easily and cost effectively.

Street noise is being addressed by newer high STC windows and doors. Sound Transmission Class (STC) is a way to measure how much noise gets through. High quality dual-pane windows from most every major manufacturer typically have an STC rating of only 27 to 29. Fine for a quiet street, but not interesting for an urban setting. High STC windows from several manufacturers now exist which raises STC values to 38 to 42 or more. That is 50% to 60% less noise. Of course, if you don't ask your builder for these you may not get them. They can cost 3X what low cost windows do. But it is worth it. You will sleep better and be less agitated everyday. And what is that worth? A few dollars a month on the mortgage...probably.

Party walls can be handled properly or poorly...and often it is poorly (unfortunately). Old techniques such as resilient channels often perform poorly or fail in time. Due to the advent of home theaters, party walls should be STC 60 to 65 or even higher. But the law, written decades ago, requires only STC 50 walls (or STC 45 after installation), which is barely enough to isolate simple conversation and not much else.

It used to be difficult to achieve wall STC's of 65 or more, but that changed with the introduction of soundproof drywall in 2003. This is a newer category of products that actually saves builders money and provides significantly improved STC values. STC 50, 60, 70 and even 80 walls have been built and tested for several years now using these products. And while the drywall itself is more expensive than standard drywall, it is overall cheaper to the builder to hit a given STC value than older methods (including time and labor) and is much more reliable. So you can save money and never hear your neighbor again.

Floor/ceiling systems can suffer from similar issues in units with neighbors above or below. And again, new technologies exist to deal with these including the use of soundproof drywall on the ceilings and damped subfloors above plus advanced flooring isolation.

What this leads us to is the important and undeniable connection between quiet living environments and climate change. According to a survey completed by the National Research Council in Canada in 2001, there is a direct tie between people wanting to stay and the STC values of party walls. As STC approached 60, some 75% of respondents were happy with their environment and wished to stay. As STC dropped to 40, a full 45% wanted to move out. And noise was the big complaint at that level. And if people are unhappy living in their condo, they will leave and tell others to stay away.

If we are to impact climate change through urbanization (and we must), we must also deal with the noise issue head on. This isn't about saving a few dollars or doing it the old way because that is good enough to meet code. Instead, it is about significantly impacting CO2 while encouraging people to move into and enjoy quality urban settings. And they will only do that if builders address their number one complaint...noise. It is time all builders take responsibility and build-in high STC windows, doors and walls. And buyers take responsibility and ask for this as an amenity (or ask about STC ratings) before you buy. This may inspire builders to do what is right because you are asking for it. Otherwise, you'll be in that 45% that want to move back out, and do more harm to environment...all due to a noise problem easily solvable today.

Save the planet...buy a (really) quiet condo.

Addressing Gaps In Seattle Schools

Patricia Hawke Reference Education/Reference Education 2007-08-08
View Detail

The Seattle Public Schools, located in Washington, are considered a fairly progressive district. With help from giant Microsoft, they receive local funds that any school would envy. But they also face issues with diversity and minority achievement.

The Seattle Schools system is a diverse organization of 97 schools, serving 45,800 students in. Seattle Schools offer a broad range of programs and learning opportunities, which are enhanced by strong support from parents, volunteers and community members. This is the largest public school system in Washington, and the 44th largest in the United States, with 12 high schools, 10 middle schools, 58 elementary schools, 8 K-8, and 9 Alternative schools and Special programs.

How does a generally white color area address the concerns of minority students? Part of the challenge for the Seattle Schools is that the Native American population is one that comes to the table with a lot of social, academic and economic struggles.

Seattle Schools have many goals, which they hope will help their students achieve academic success and graduate; ready to go on to college or enter the work force and have a successful life. Among these goals:

Improve the effectiveness and relevance of instructional and support services for all students.

Eliminate the achievement gap.

Eliminate all systemic barriers to student achievement.

Build leadership capacity for accountability, inclusion, and effectiveness.

Manage resources and set priorities using principles of equity and sustainability.

Some programs that are available to Seattle students include: Athletics, Arts, Advanced Learning and International Baccalaureate, Library and Instructional Services, Technology Instruction and Career and Technical Education programs are also available to Seattle Schools students. But what about the specific need of the Native American population in the Seattle Schools?

Two other, more unique programs available to the students attending Seattle Schools are Migrant Education and Huchoosedah Indian education. Native American students enrolled in Seattle Schools can expect the Huchoosedah Indian program to assist them in all grades K-12. After-school services, academic tutoring, mentoring, coordination of home and school needs and cultural programs are offered.

This Seattle Schools Native American program is a federally funded program. This program reflects the belief held by Seattle Schools that the academic success of Native students is grounded in a strong sense of cultural identity and belonging. This service reflects this belief. Students who are of Native American, Alaskan Native, and American Indians are served by this program.

The Migrant Education program that is in place in Seattle Schools ensures that the large population of migrant students is provided with academic success while they are enrolled in any of the Seattle Schools. Also known as children of the road or children of the harvest , migrant students do not typically attend the same school for an entire school year. Many report to school in the late spring, while several come to Seattle Schools for the Fall harvest, and return to their homes in other states; most have departed by November. This program, federally funded and managed by the state of Washington, intends to increase the educational opportunities for these students for the duration of their time in Seattle Schools.

Addressing Aggression In Dogs

Bob Evanston Home Family/Pets 2007-07-25
View Detail
Humans and dogs have a long history of happy co-existence. For many people, as the old saying goes, their dog is indeed their best friend. Dogs can serve many roles -family member, guardian, jogging buddy, worker and countless others.

Sometimes, however, the canine-human relationship is not completely harmonious. Unfortunately, dogs can inspire irritation and even fear in people. What does a dog owner do when faced with an aggressive or downright vicious animal that he or she cannot seem to control?

Aggression is the most serious problem faced by dog owners. It can take many forms. Your dog may have a problem with other dogs, with children or with just certain people or in certain environments. So, first of all, you should narrow it down and pinpoint the exact issue.

The first thing you should do is take your dog to a trusted veterinarian. This will rule out medical causes for your dog's behavior. Once this has been addressed, you should be sure to keep your dog (as much as possible) away from situations that provoke the aggressive behavior.

In other words, do not tempt fate. If your dog tends to fight with other dogs, until you can get a handle on the situation, you really need to isolate your dog from other dogs. The same, of course, is true for dogs who are aggressive towards people. If necessary, use a muzzle. Be sure to warn people not to approach a potentially dangerous dog. You do not want to deal with lawsuits, or other repercussions of your dog attacking someone, whether human or another animal.

In some sad cases, as when you have a dog who is a threat to a young child, you may have to give up the dog. In most cases, however, the problem can be remedied with some perseverance. One thing that often helps is to increase the amount of exercise your dog gets. Often, an aggressive dog is one who has too much unused energy.

A note about exercise --playing with your dog is great, but make sure you don't play too roughly and unknowingly encourage aggression. For many dogs, it's fine to play rough, but if your dog has an issue with aggression, you should not be playing in ways that foster this.

Sometimes the problem is isolation. Dogs are social animals who do not like to be left alone for long periods. Tying a dog to a stake in the ground all day is not going to make him/her happy, and in some cases it may cause behavior problems. If you are away from your dog for long periods, try to make an arrangement so the dog isn't alone all the time. At the very least, make sure the animal has some room to move around.

These are fairly basic suggestions and will often not be enough to solve the problem. The fact is, if you have an aggressive dog, or one with other serious behavioral problems, you are going to have to take some action. This means either hiring a professional dog trainer or taking some time to learn how to train your dog yourself. The first solution can be expensive, the second requires a commitment in time, as well as patience.

The issue of an aggressive dog is serious and cannot be overlooked. Fortunately, most dogs can be cured of aggression and almost any other behavioral problem. Some dogs, just like some humans, need extra help in getting past whatever problems they may have acquired.

Addressing Your Hypoglycemia Naturally

David Cowley Health Fitness/Health Fitness 2008-04-19
View Detail
Anyone that has been diagnosed with hypoglycemia needs to be very sure that they are in touch with their doctor and are following his or her recommendations carefully. Hypoglycemia refers to a consistently low level of sugar in the blood and is different from diabetes or other blood sugar problems, although it can be a result of this condition.
It's important to also understand that if you are planning on treating hypoglycemia that you know you actually have this condition and the only way to know for sure is with a visit to your doctor. The digestive process is consistent and ongoing, and it's a natural part of that process to have your blood sugar rise and fall throughout the day. Symptoms include dizziness or lightheadedness, weakness, sweating, coldness or clamminess, feeling numb or a tingling sensation in the fingers, and anxiety or tremor. Sometimes a person can have these symptoms due to other conditions, and feeling a bit nervous and anxious or lightheaded when you haven't eaten in awhile does not necessarily mean you actually have hypoglycemia. Trying to address a condition you don't have is just as dangerous as ignoring a problem that you do have.
Causes of Hypoglycemia
There can be many reasons why one would have low blood sugar because it usually run in one's family. If one's parents were diabetic it's not unusual for these problems to be passed on to the children. Obesity is also a common cause of this condition as a person that is overweight usually has problems with the blood sugar levels. A very poor diet can also wreak havoc on the body's ability to handle sugar; the pancreas and its ability to produce insulin is thrown off course as it tries to digest food properly.
Sometimes the subsection of the pancreas call the Islets of Langerhan produces to much insulin. The insulin function is to remove surplus glucose from the bloodstream. The insulin keeps not only the surplus but also the required sugar that your body needs out of the blood. This means that the brain is not getting enough sugar as food and will send out distress signals in the form of craving for sweets. The pancreas then produces even more insulin to combat the sudden high levels of sugar after indulging in a sweet treat which will change the sugar into fat for storage by the body. A common side effect of hypoglycemia is overweight
Treating Hypoglycemia
Some cases are so far advanced that only medication can help keep one's blood sugar level. If your doctor has prescribed any type of medication or treatment for you, it's important to keep taking this medication without fail and do not stop taking it unless your doctor gives you express permission. However, there are other things you can do to keep your case of hypoglycemia in check and lessen the secondary symptoms of it. For one, be mindful of how often you eat.
Blood sugar levels drop when the stomach is empty or after the body has digested food. You never want to use this condition as an excuse to overeat, but having very modest portions every three or four hours is helpful. By modest portions, we mean a few pieces of cheese, a handful of peanuts, some peanut butter on crackers, or a slice of toast. These small bits of food will keep your blood sugar level but will not make you gain weight. Protein also helps to regulate your blood sugar, so have food that's high in protein. This usually means meat and dairy products. Avoid sugary foods as well.
Vitamin B is necessary for good metabolism and is necessary in the digestion of carbohydrates.
Thiamin is needed to convert food into energy and is needed for the utilizing of carbohydrates by the body.
Lecithin helps to burn body fat and it helps one feel well fed on less food.
Cysteine can block the effects of insulin and be quite effective in controlling hypoglycemia. Cysteine is even more effective when combined with Vitamin C and Vitamin B1.
Phenylalanine acts directly on the appetite center of the brain to help suppress the cravings for food.
St. John’s Wort extract is valuable in boosting seratonin levels in the brain to help reduce cravings for food.
Vitamin E accelerates wound healing and aids in the functioning of the immune system.

Rolfing-Assessing and Addressing Scoliosis

John Barton Internet Business/Blogging 2008-01-01
View Detail
Rotoscoliosis is a pathology that is ongoing and continuous over time and is always falling out of balance. The central nervous system is the initiator of scoliosis and manifests as rotation, counter-rotation, and compression in the structure and tissue. Since the body is eighty percent water, it is hard to comprehend how rotoscoliotic bodies become so cemented. The fixation of the pathology distributes the asymmetry system wide and especially affects lung capacity, heart space, and body geometry.

Certified Rolfing provides pain management and the opportunity of the receiver of the ten series to find a deeper felt sense of what it is like to be inside of a dynamic, fluid filled, uninhibited body.

Scoliosis can emerge in the fetus, in adolescence, or somewhere in childhood, and studies have shown that mother's who are under abnormal levels of stress have a higher incidence of rotoscoliosis. Fetal scoliosis emerges in the womb so the child is born with the curvature, but in most cases is supposed to disappear by the age of five. With infantile scoliosis the curvature manifest between the first and fifth year, and with juvenile scoliosis its between the fifth and tenth year.

Adolescence cases are the majority of incidence with eighty percent of all scoliosis cases reported in this margin. Eighty percent of all cases reported occur to females and eighty percent of all cases are lumbar right/mid thoracic left curvatures. In some cases Harrington Rods are used as intervention by fixating the spine from the occipitals to the sacrum causing a chronic strain to the nervous system.

The fetus begins life as a primitive streak that forms the spine and central nervous system. After the brain emerges, the heart mushrooms out of the brain and descends to the thorax. This is when the respiratory diaphragm and the connective tissue matrix issues forth to invest the entire form of the being. The scoliosis insult infiltrates the nervous system and fascial web, thus the journey of the strain begins to take it toll on the structure.

Some cases of scoliosis have been linked to polio incidence, but the majority of all cases are idiopathic, which means with unknown cause. Understanding the fixation can be complex because the nature of the body is hydrodynamic, and yet the fluid body becomes fixated and the tissue edges become dense and fibrous strengthening and cementing the pattern.

Scoliosis is a systemic asymmetrical pathology with a breaking point of twenty-eight and a half degrees of curvature in the mid thoracic. Since the majority of cases are mid thoracic right cases this means eighty percent of all cases have decreased heart, lung, and cardiovascular capacity. All of the diaphragms in the body are affected by the side bends with rotations and compression issues in the thorax, causing an inefficient and debilitating use of lung, heart and circulatory space.

Most cases report not being able to fully experience what Dr. Rolf called Body Geometry, which is the bodies natural organizing potentials being expressed fully in gravity. The asymmetry and the enhanced affects from the scoliosis make it hard to experience something that is not there.

Water is intelligent to vibration because all matter is energy, and when we see the body as space we understand its potential as dynamic, flowing, and uninhibited. Certified Rolfing provides the opportunity and technology to address side bends with rotations in the vertebrae and tissue drift's associated with rotoscoliosis. The Rolfing ten series technology is premium and stands alone, but when applied appropriately works well with Orthopedics, Chiropractic, Massage Therapy, Psychology and Physical Therapy to hopefully resolve some of the problems that arise out of rotoscoliosis.

Rolfing specializes in de-rotating the connective tissue of the thorax and entire body to bring a certain level of balance and peace to beings with rotoscoliosis. The Rolfing technology takes the whole being into consideration when exploring how to work with each individual, seeing them for more than just the product of their environmental conditioning. Certified Rolfing has the capacity to release, realign, and balance the whole body.

The Certified Rolfing Ten Series has the potential to reduce pain and release tension in the connective and myofascial tissue of the body associated with TMJ, CTS, RLS, Fibromyalgia, Sciatica, Fascitis, Bunions, Scoliosis, and Cerebral Palsy. Poor posture is associated with fascial asymmetries that can cause foot, leg, knee, hip, back, shoulder, neck, arm, hand, and head pain; integration therapy is necessary. Orthopedic, Chiropractic, Physical, and Massage Therapist recognize Certified Rolfing and Rolf Movement as premium pain management utilizing Structural, Functional, and Postural Integration.

Tips for Addressing & Sending Out Your Invitations
Details, Details, Details

They can make or break people’s expectations of your wedding. A little extra attention to the fine points of posting your invitations will impress your invitees. Your guests will appreciate how much you desire their presence at your special day.

Traditional or Contemporary

Traditional wedding invitations come with two envelopes, an inner envelope and an outer one. The inner envelope is smaller and usually doesn’t have gumming on the flap. Contemporary invitations are often square shaped and come with only one outer envelope.

Addressing the Invitations

The outer envelope should be addressed formally. This means no abbreviations should be used except for Mr., Mrs., Jr., or Dr. Write out the names of cities and states and there is no punctuation at the end of lines.

Mr. and Mrs. John Doe
1500 Main Street
New York, New York 10053

The inner envelope should read Mr. and Mrs. Doe (no first names).

If you are inviting a family with children, only the parent’s names should be included on the outer envelope. Young children’s first names should be listed on the line below their parents on the inner envelope.

Mr. and Mrs. Doe
Mary and Steven

Any children over age 16 should receive their own invitation.

Assembling Your Invitation

Enclosures, such as reception cards or directions, should be placed either on top of the invitation or inside the fold. Response cards go under the flap of the response envelope and then over the invitation or inside the fold.

In the past, tissues were used to guard against ink smears. Today’s printing methods don’t require tissue but many continue to use it for aesthetic reasons and for the sake of tradition. If you wish to include tissue, place it over the printing on the invitation.

The invitation is folded and put in the inner envelope (the smaller envelope) with the folded edge down and the front of the invitation facing the back of the envelope. The inner envelope is then placed in the outer envelope with the front of the inner envelope facing the back of the outer envelope.

Postage

Before mailing, you should bring one of your pre-stuffed invitations to the post office to determine what will be sufficient postage. Depending on the size of your invitations and the number of enclosures you include, your invitations can weigh in on the hefty side. Once you mail your invitations, you don’t want to have to think about them again!

Addressing Anger Management For Kids In Creative Ways

Nathalie Lafleur Self Improvement/Self Improvement 2007-03-30

It can be easy to loose your patience when dealing with an especially unruly or angry child, but in doing so you are really just reinforcing the child's angry behavior. You can use some fun ways to get the child to see the excessive nature of their own anger, instead of reacting with anger

Although in especially heated situations this may be a struggle, the faster you can get the child to release their anger, the quicker you can diffuse the situation and have an efficient conversation. Contrary to anger management for adults, anger management for kids is less restrictive. With Kids, it is possible to use more imaginative techniques.

First step: Point Out the Obvious

If your child is reacting in a ridiculously angry way, point it out calmly. You should not tease your child about it, but make them understand how silly it is to rave and rant. Pretend their words are blowing you over or make an exaggerated face of surprise in return. Make your message clear, but your reaction light hearted. Because kids don't have the same social experience as adults to pick up on small nuances, you don't need to be subtle in addressing anger management for kids. If their anger doesn't break down yours, you will be able to break down the walls the child has erected around their emotions.

Second step: Create Space

If the child is still not responding to your efforts even if you've reacted light-heartedly and calmly, there is no harm in expressing your inability to deal with the child in their angry state, and then just walking away. If the child runs screaming after you after using this technique, calmly remind he or she that you can only speak with them when they have calmed down, and do not react to them until their anger has subsided. You'll know that you have been effective in driving home your message if the child understands that they have to work past their anger in order to get your attention. If you are consistent in your message, the child will learn quickly how to cope with his or her own anger.

If you can remember how frustrating it felt to be a child and to want to be heard, you'll hold the key to anger management for kids. In the case of anger management for kids, it is less a symptom of underdevelopment, as it may be in adults, and more a lesson that has not yet been learned. The best teachers are not necessarily the strictest. When dealing with anger management for kids, remember that the best teachers are the ones who can see past the child's surface reaction to the little person inside who's begging for help.

Addressing Your Online Poker Technical Phobias

Do you have a fear of playing online poker because you think that something terrible will happen -- like your computer crashing while you are in the middle of a game just as you have won a jackpot? In the course of human history this has not yet been known to happen yet it is one of the biggest cyber myths on the Internet and the kind of technophobias that people have about playing online poker.

In this article we will address some of your fears about playing poker online so that you know what truly is threatening to your financial or computer security and what is not.

· Will a poker crash while I am winning? First of all before you pay online you need to choose a site that is reputable and known for being technically superb. Don't play at a site you have never heard of. Play somewhere like Party Poker that has a reputation for good graphics and smooth operation.

· Will a gambling site just steal my credit card and take my money? Make sure always that any site that you enroll in has a secure socket layer when you pay for your poker chips. As you pay look at the URL in your address bar. If it does not begin with https:// (as opposed to http) then you are not dealing with a secure site. Once again all of the big sites like Party Poker have this type of encryption.

· If I download a poker or casino game will it put spy ware on my computer? Once again this is a matter of choosing a reputable site. If thousands of people are using it then it is likely this is not an issue.

· Are online games rigged in the online casino's favor? Online casino games are regulated even more strictly then non-virtual ones. Instead of a dealer software called a Random Number Generator makes sure the play is fair.

· Will a gambling site just not pay me if I win? Once again this is against the law and not possible as online casinos are even more highly regulated

Make sure that you choose a site that has HELP available via live chat, email and telephone 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week. This once again means choosing a really big, international site such as partypoker.com, which does have this type of customer support.

C21 Communications, solution provider and exclusive distributor of Topex products in the UK, is pleased to announce the availability of the first Topex compact VoIP gateway including Asterisk based IP PBX functions. The European telecommunication equipment provider, TOPEX recently announced that the Asterisk version 1.4.0-beta 2 is successfully implemented on its VoIP mG. TOPEX miniGateway with Asterisk is a compact VoIP gateway addressed to small and medium businesses (SMBs) having a large number of international calls. This offer is most compelling for business users looking for easy customizable open source solutions. Asterisk is the most popular and extensible open source telephone system in the world, offering flexibility, functionality and features not available in proprietary business systems. Asterisk is a complete IP PBX (private branch exchange) for businesses, and can be downloaded for free. Asterisk can operate with almost all telephony equipments. TOPEX miniGateway is built around the Mindspeed 82820 convergence processor featuring 60 VoIP channels, 2E1 trunks with ISDN-PRI signaling. The bridging and conference was modified to use processor's DSP facilities thus freeing the host processor from processing software codecs and media traffic. This makes it suitable for applications like IP PBX, Call Center, IVR, Voice Mail or upgrades of non IP PBXs to VoIP. The presence of the Asterisk software in the TOPEX gateway gives users the possibility to easily configure the gateway via a Graphical Interface (GUI), available on the World Wide Web, in order to customize it accordingly to their needs. Latest global study by Access Markets International (AMI) Partners, Inc. shows that most SMBs companies will move to VoIP over the next five years—creating a huge opportunity for equipment vendors, service providers, and VARs. According to AMI estimates, the global SMB market for VoIP solutions was worth about US$3.26 billion in all of 2006, up 26% over 2005. Many small businesses (1-99 employees) generally seek simple voice-only solutions, while most medium businesses (100-999 employees) want sophisticated unified communications.

Addressing Educational and Safety Needs through Direct Intervention

Andrew Schwartz Internet Business/Internet Business 2007-06-25

Unlike the previous proposals of scholars intending to improve the quality of services delivered in the child care sector, I would not recommend investing massive amounts of public money to develop subsidiary programs. At the present moment federal policies focus on three major issues. Firstly, the major focus of federal programs is on the economic life of families intending to help low income families satisfy their needs of child care services. Secondly, only a few federal policies address the issues of safety and security of children. Thirdly, federal government views child care policies primarily as a way to promote employment of parents and pay no attention at the programs enhancing child development. As evident from the research findings, governmental subsidies to low income families proved to inefficient, as an increase in the amount of subsidies by 50 percent would be followed by only 2.9 per cent increase in the level of employment among women. As such, governmental policies that target this segment require extensive financing of public funds and do not lead to significant improvements. At the same time, the focus should be shifted to solutions that address the issues of safety of children and raise the level of confidence in health care services of working mothers. There are several programs currently in force that stimulate child development or are directly related to the issue of single parenthood. Child support enforcement policies for single parent families (referred to as Title IV-D of the Social Security Act) allows single mothers and fathers receive financial support for child care services. Another program is called Even Start; it targets community organizations that stimulate literacy among children and parenting education. It should be further pointed out, that programs that promote child development have been introduced within only the last few years. The amount by which child development and support expenditures have been increased in 2000 as compared with 1998 – represents over 109 per cent. The focus of the programs remains on children of 4 years old and under. As such, solution to the child care programs should continue on in the direction already undertaken; however several points should be particularly highlighted. Firstly, providing training to caregivers would significantly improve the quality of services delivered. Secondly, the impact of home visiting programs should be increased and strategic plan for infant initiatives worked out. Thirdly, the focus should be shifted to the earliest ages of child life, considering the growing interest of women in participation in the labor force. Finally, legislature that regulates quality of child care services provided and sets the standards that would increase the level of certainty in the services provided.

Bodybuilding Tips - Addressing Weak Lower Lats

Dane Fletcher Health Fitness/Health Fitness 2008-05-01

Dane

As bodybuilders begin to advance to state-level competition, where everyone onstage does all their homework in terms of training, diet and supplementation, shows are often won by the athlete onstage with the least amount of structural flaws. Because of this, it is important to customize training protocols to address perceived weaknesses in structure, and utilize particular exercises to target muscle groups, which can help to lessen the negative effect these weaknesses will have upon the perception of judges.

Many bodybuilders, particularly ectomorphs, suffer from "high lats", a condition in which their back muscles (latissimus) attach at a higher position in the back than desired. While this does provide a great illusion of a small waist, it severely limits the perception of width that a bodybuilder can project, and often results in points lost to other competitors which just plain look wider.

The lower lats can be targeted using several methods. A wide grip on pulldown movements is beneficial. Training slower and mentally focusing on the area can help, too. Keeping the back completely vertical during movement helps keep the upper-back out of the movement, which emphasizes the lower back. Exercise selection can also go a long way to correcting high lats. Close grip cable rowing, T-bar and dumbbell freeweight rows, Deadlifts, and lat pulldowns are very useful for targeting lower lats.

Advanced bodybuilders at the top amateur and professional ranks often resort to site injections in order to install a small amount of swelling in the lower lat region and make the muscle group appear larger. This is a common practice at the top levels where any perceived weakness could result in a competitor placing out of the money. It is a dangerous practice, and infections are common. Shots should be avoided by most bodybuilders - instead, devote that time and effort to better nutrition and supplementation, as well as posing and tan, the two factors that win/lose way more shows than lat insertions.

Addressing Safety Concerns With Cosmetic Surgery Procedures

Kendra Wagner Health Fitness/Health Fitness 2007-11-12
View Detail

For many people considering plastic surgery, the potential risks and complications are one of the biggest concerns. While most cosmetic procedures are considered very safe, some of the possible side effects can sound frightening. The key to finding peace of mind is to understand these safety concerns, but also be aware of the probability of these complications actually occurring. In many cases, the chance of experiencing negative outcomes is rare and can be dramatically reduced by following a few simple safety precautions.

Always Choose a Qualified Surgeon

One of the best ways to address safety concerns with cosmetic surgery procedures is to start by choosing the absolute best medical team available. The skill, experience and expertise of your surgeon can have a big impact not only on the overall safety of the procedure, but also on how well you are satisfied with your results. By carefully screening the available surgeons and then choosing one that is best suited to your unique needs, you can dramatically lower the risks associated with having plastic surgery.

What questions should you ask potential surgeons? Start by asking about specialty areas, years of experience and the number of procedures performed. Finally, ask to see a collection of before-and-after photos, ask for a reference from a former patient and discuss any problems the surgeon may have faced in the past.

Focus on Realistic Expectations

Another major safety concerns involves the extent of the surgery and your own expectations. Some patients aspire to an unattainable ideal, which might lead to excessive surgeries and unwelcome complications. In order to avoid this problem, always strive to have a realistic view of what you can expect from surgery. Discuss your goals with your doctor to decide exactly which procedures are right for you and talk about any potential risks you may face. By knowing exactly what you can expect after surgery, you will be better prepared to make the right decisions for your body and your health.

Follow the Doctor’s Orders

Post-operative care can have a major impact on the overall safety of any cosmetic surgery procedure. Without the proper after-care, you may face additional risks and complications. For this reason, it is essential to precisely follow the recommendations provided by your doctor. In many cases, you may be instructed to treat the surgery area to allow for proper healing and drainage. Generally, you will also be instructed to avoid certain activities for a specified period of time. Failing to follow these guidelines not only increases the chances of infection, bleeding and poor healing; it may also compromise the overall success of your surgery.

Web2.0 - Addressing the Social Engineering Foe

Steve Nimmons Internet Business/Internet Business 2008-03-08
View Detail

I recall (approximately 8 years ago) reading an impressive poster on Social Engineering at a well-known manufacturing company in Silicon Valley. The poster contained sensible advice for dealing with unsolicited phone calls, ‘chance’ conversations, and the importance of discretion when discussing corporate matters on planes, trains and automobiles. Tail gating and the ‘risk of gallantry’, the social and psychological tricks used by experienced practitioners to ‘project belonging’, the need for vigilance in public spaces, and of course ‘clear desk policy’ and appropriate security of corporate assets. Our workforces were equipped to deal with the primary aspects of exposure.

The advice (like all good advice) was clear, concise, relevant and accessible. With the advent and exponential uptake of Web2.0 however, I wonder what a similarly intentioned poster should convey today?

Linkedin, Facebook, Plaxo and the proliferation of associated groups provide a rich hunting ground for the Social Engineer. Companies can be significantly profiled, names, departments, reporting structures, nature of business, personal links, networks can be mined to provide a basic ‘mapped framework’. It would not be difficult to sift these sites for information to use in ‘impersonation attacks’, then Social Engineering additional information through email or telephony channels. Worse still, with no identity management (i.e. no established trust), it is simple to create fake pages, groups and details and use these to link the unwitting. A very interesting topic for future discussion (but perhaps of grave concern in terms of information freedom) would be creation of trusts and identities to ‘validate’ the Web2.0 profiles (personal certificates for Web2.0 anyone?).

I don’t want to be alarmist. I am in fact one of the greatest evangelists of collaborative technology (having worked on groupware projects since 1993). Indeed I am resolutely against those who seek to ban access from corporate networks (this is not a solution). I think the ubiquity of these technologies and their genuine usefulness in conducting business and expanding networking possibilities is immense.

That said, does you business attempt in any way to train your staff on the potential dangers of these sites? Do you have a view of the key dangers that should be addressed? Do you have relevant corporate security policies? I provide some suggestions for areas of consideration:

1. Discussion of confidential information in a closed group could be extremely unwise (you do not really control the security of the group, despite the best intentions of the provider)

2. Fake groups or unofficial groups could be created for good or bad intention. Corporations finding unofficial groups using their name and branding should seek to intervene and gain some degree of control. Lambasting the group’s creators (assuming their intention is genuine) is foolish, as this simply indicates you were too slow to embrace Web2.0 in your corporate IT landscape. This is a wake up call that you have lost touch with an emerging and dominant demographic

3. How much of your business in terms of personnel, roles, responsibilities, professional activities can be profiled? Links to friends in the same business can be used to elicit and deduce further intelligence. Do you have any guidance for personnel identifying themselves as members of your organisation?

4. Public comments from identified staff could be detrimental to the reputation of the business. Marketing and IT Security need to work hand in hand with identification of “damaging” (or potentially damaging) material

The proliferation of Web2.0 opens a huge number of holes in the sieve of corporate intelligence. What are you doing to understand and mitigate your exposure? Do you have corporate policies, security guidelines and policies, underpinned by an auditing mechanism? Do you provide advice on safe and positive self-marketing?

Empowered employees can act as corporate ambassadors and an entirely new (highly scalable and highly distributed) channel can be leveraged for your marketing goals. Loose control of your employees in Web2.0 however, at your peril!

Addressing Grief and Loss in Addiction Counseling

MAx Fabry Self Improvement/Self Improvement 2007-10-28
View Detail
This summer I attended a luncheon for professional addiction counselors. During that luncheon, the speaker talked about the need for addiction counselors to step out of the traditional approach for treating active addiction. He challenged us all to continue to learn additional methods and theories to broaden how we address each person that comes to us for help and guidance. I felt so validated!! Coming from a sociological, psychological, research based background, I have approached counseling the addict with a variety of tools which I carefully choose for the individual based on the need of that person and their circumstances. In the world of addiction counseling, I have maintained that each person that seeks help is an individual and that cookie-cutter-type counseling doesn’t work—thus the ongoing relapse cycle. My approach takes into consideration all of the components considered using the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria which helps to identify challenges in cognitive, physiological, and behavioral components including social, financial, and environmental. Identifying the individual’s challenges allows me to create a treatment approach that allows the person to cognitively become aware of negative thoughts and behaviors, decide they want to change these thoughts and behaviors, then offer them the tools they need to make changes leading to a choice of a healthier lifestyle.

There are studies that estimate the rate of recovering people relapsing is as high as 74 percent! This would lead us all to agree that, in fact, the traditional approach for treating active addiction is not working. Working with survivors of addiction and life transitions, I recognized a pattern of underlining core issues that appeared to keep people stuck—unable to reach their full life potential, and chronic relapse. Traditional treatment programs and 12 step support programs are often successful encouraging sobriety, but do not appear to identify and address old deep core issues. ‘Issues” such as child abuse, both physical and emotional, other PTSD issues similar to traumas experienced by military personnel, and ongoing loses experienced through their lives. Depending on the age the addiction became chronic, the individual may not have acquired the tools necessary to deal with what life throws at them on a daily basis. Often the result is a reaction to undefined fears and the lack of capacity to deal with feelings. The reaction is to deal with a tool that is familiar: their drug of choice. The addict becomes stuck in their cycle of relapse. Providing some basic tools for the addict to help them identify, name, and face the fears, identify and understand the feelings, and move on to a healthier lifestyle, becomes the challenge for the counselor.

A non traditional tool I have found very effective with clients proan to chronic relapse is Elisabeth Kubler-Ross’ Cycle of Grief and Loss. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, M.D. best-selling author of On Death and Dying and To Live Until We Say Good-Bye, was the recipient of more than twenty-five honorary doctorates. Her books have been translated into more than thirty languages. Her research and writings were primarily around death and dying; she developed the Cycle of Grief and Loss to guide those dying, and their loved ones, through a healthy grieving process. Her cycle has been adapted as a cognitive tool for processing healing of all losses. In substance abuse recovery programs, this cycle is often referred to as the Forgiveness Cycle. I initially learned this tool while in nurses training in the early ‘70s. It appeared to be simple to utilize; it eventually became a thought process that is utilitarianly subconscious to me now. There have been variations of this cycle throughout the decades; this is a starting point I wish to use to help understand for our journey through your loss process.

Kublar-Ross identifies five stages of grief: Denial Bargaining Anger Depression Acceptance

Kublar-Ross’ stages of grief can be viewed in a cycle--a sieve-type process that allows losses to cycle through, then recycle through the process as many times as you need to in order to MOVE ON. Each time you allow the loss to cycle through this process, a little more of the pain is caught, AND, YOU COME OUT A STRONGER PERSON.

Let me provide a simplified overview to each stage; I will use the loss of substance abuse—alcohol and/or drugs-- as an example:

DENIAL: -the shock absorber of the soul defense against reality try to deny an event actually happened--pretend it isn’t real example: child sex abuse -feelings associated with shock, disbelief, numbness coping mechanism for survival deny feelings

Denial is a term that is often associated with addicts prior to going into treatment. If we look deeper at what other denials there may be, we might be able to help the client identify other loses associated with denial. The example I used above as child sex abuse is a common core issue often found with chronic relapse.

BARGAINING -the “what if......” or the “if only.....” -feelings associated with: excited, wishy-washy, anxious

We have all heard, or dealt with, the active alcoholic that wants to prove that alcohol is not a problem for them. So they vow to only drink on weekends, but will easily slip into the rest of the week.

ANGER: -angry at the event, at yourself, at others, at God -feelings associated with: rage, resentment, confusion

Interventions often moves the addict to this stage. As the addict is forced to enter treatment, they begin to redirect their anger to themselves for allowing ‘this to happen’ to them. Blaming others, a characteristic of addict behavior, manifests even greater at this stage.

SADNESS/DEPRESSION: -exhausted from denial -bargaining didn’t work -expended anger--sick of angry -finally acknowledge what life socked to us -start to really feel the pain

Often the addict will teeter between anger and depression. One of the withdrawal symptoms an addict experiences is depression, particularly for alcoholics. If the addict remains between, or on, either of these stages for too long, relapse becomes inevitable because the addict does not have the tools necessary to deal with all the feelings associated with these stages. These two stages is where the hard work is really done to uncover any core issues that may exist.

ACCEPTANCE -careful not to mistake for ‘happy stage’, or ‘pink cloud’ -void of feelings, pain is gone, the struggle is over, feel “centered” -begin adjusting/reorganizing -WE ARE FREE!!! -we get to MOVE ON

It could take up to 18-24 months for someone in a good recovery program to reach acceptance. Part of the problem is that loses of all types are happening all the time—day in and day out. In addition to helping the addict work through their major loss of the substance of choice, they must also recognize that life goes on and loses will continue to occur: marriage breaks up, kids leave home, death of loved ones, etc. Perhaps for the first time in their life, the addict has to feel, learn to act instead of react, and not hide behind a substance—the artificial world they created with their addiction suddenly becomes reality. The important fact that I keep emphasizing to my clients in recovery is that if the cycle is allowed to happen, each time the loss cycles through the sieve, a little more of the pain is caught, and they will emerge stronger.

Some things to keep in mind about this process are: -You will not move neatly from one ‘stage’ of grief to another. Life happens. You will be experiencing a constant daily, hourly, movement of losses through the cycle. You will be experiencing more then one loss at a time. Each of these losses may be in different stages; you won’t always enter in the same order; and you may visit stages more then once.

-Your feelings and emotions may ebb and flow, like the ocean’s waves. By learning to identify and acknowledge these feelings, you can move through the process at your own pace. -You will, more then likely, recycle your losses. You may think the loss is resolved, but then, something will eke out of your subconscious, you’ll experience a smell, sound, see a picture, one of your senses will trigger the loss--AND THE PROCESS WILL BEGIN ALL OVER.

-You can expect upheaval, emotional chaos, and unpredictability for a period of time while consciously dealing with your loss: the perfect fuel for relapse. If you can learn to STOP, identify the FEELING, and remember what LOSS you are cycling through the process, you will be able to feel more in control of your emotions. YOU CAN CHOOSE TO BE CENTERED. How you deal with the loss is up to you: HEALTHY OR UNHEALTHY.

-Healing doesn’t always travel down a freshly paved road that you can see miles ahead. Healing is like a journey over a mountainous road: you start climbing, then plunge into despair; you may seem to go two steps forward, then three steps back; sometimes you may feel you are back at the beginning and you have to start all over. This is all part of the healing process. YOU WILL HEAL. Be patient with yourself. Continue the process. DON’T GET STUCK.

In grief you are in the depths of hopelessness and helplessness. How you deal with your losses determines your ability to live a FULL HEALTHY LIFE. If you allow yourself, and use the strategies you have read here, you will EMERGE A HEALTHIER, STRONGER, MORE CENTERED person capable of dealing with infinite possibilities of the universe.

Please keep in mind that this is a simplified overview of the Kubler-Ross grief and loss process. You will be able to read a detailed description with additional tools that will help you through the grief and loss process in my new e-book that will be available in January 2008. Are You Addressing Prospect Fears In Your Sales Pitch?

Donald Yates Writing Speaking/Writing Speaking 2008-02-14
View Detail
There’s one tactic that eliminates fear

Many times taking sales copy from passable to exceptional is the inclusion of only one elementary point. For instance, an exceptional sales letter should always address your prospect’s fears and objections right away. Exposing any negative possibilities that would created fears and objections, eliminates future roadblocks which in turn could stop the prospect in his/her tracks and rob you of any sales. A fact is, most all products and services have both benefits and drawbacks, it’s the nature of the beast. Don’t let any unseen, undefined drawbacks create uncertainty in the mind of your prospect spiraling what would have been, a good customer into a shy prospect. In no way allow your prospect’s troubling drawback cost you in sales just because you didn’t take the time to face them head on and deal with them

A good sales letter eases the transaction

Don’t wait, If you anticipate your prospect's biggest fear, complaint, objection, or problem before it becomes a hindrance then you can use the product or service to eliminate it immediately, you will have provided a smooth road for the prospect into your sales pitch while creating trust and good will in the process. Building trust is important because it eliminates fear and eases the prospect’s anxiety thus getting him/her evolved in examining the sales letter and coming to an honest, unbiased conclusion.

I heard recently of an example in which this technique was used. At Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom, the employees were having a problem. Is seems in the day, when visitors are there, most of the animals wanted to sleep. The only time visitors were likely to see them feeding in the fields was very early in the morning. Disney's solution? A promotion that reads as follows: "Our animals need to rest at various times during the day. This means each time you visit, you're experience will be different!" They cleverly addressed an - absence problem - and turned it into a - new experience each visit - benefit.

Bring the point home.

Because everything has its good and bad side, there are as many examples of turning a liability into an asset as there products. If your prospect fears the price tag, show him/her how he/she will save in the long-run by showing how much it might cost him/her if he/she doesn't purchase your fantastic, new, cost savings, product. If, for example, you're selling small cars point out the fact that their savings in fuel consumption will not only help the environment but will help them make their monthly car payment. All liabilities can be turned into assets if approached as creative solutions, being creative is just a matter of forcing a negative issues and returning a positive outcome.

Look at the weakest link

When you prepare your new marketing campaign, start by giving your product a close examination. Look at the product's possible weak points and address them as useful sales strategy. Chances are, you don’t own the product, but even so if there is a obvious flaw, you may be able to tempt the manufacture into modifying it to make it more appealing – then make your advertising copy – more appealing in return. If that is not a possibility replace the product with a more desirable one or you can simply use reverse physiology, change the drawbacks into strengths. Here are a few approaches to doing this:

1. Set down, include as many colleagues as possible, and do a brainstorming session. The purpose being – to identify – and eliminate – any and all barriers that could prevent customers from buying your product. Get their creative juices flowing. Have them be as critical as possible.

2. Create a T-chart. Take a sheet of paper and draw a horizontal line across the top and a vertical line down the center. Label one side of the T "Objections" and the other side "Solutions." This is where you will be separating the good from the bad.

3. Pick the product apart by brainstorming ideas one side at a time. Start by having each colleague contribute at least one idea to the "objections" side. Write down each idea without making any judgments or revisions. It might sound a little crazy at first but makes sense later when ideas begin to form into solid concepts. It’s like an evaluation, you’re not trying to destroy the product you’re just determining what need to be done so it can perform better.

4. Prioritize the barriers, which stands out the most, and then choose the one objection you’re prospect is most likely to present. Once you have exposed the problem, you can then zero in on developing one or more "Solutions" to this objection by prompting your colleagues for their outlook. Your customer's Number one objection should emerge. Bring up and resolve the problem early in your copy and, instead of scaring your prospect away, your copy will draw him/her in.

Get started today

Take a good look at your product, ask questions of colleagues and customers to search out any negatives then turn them into positives. Use the old negative to help sell a new positive.

Tip: A lead is considered as the period of time a reader allows to decide if he/she's going to keep reading your sales pitch or move on. The lead should contain a big, fat, attractive promise and also a second subtler promise.

The lead must also be the appropriate niche that your sales pitch is aimed at. To get it right, review the prospect's core complex to figure out what his immediate concerns are.

Happy Trails
