EDI Reference
EDI stand for Electronic Data Interchange, and is being used for over 30 years in different industries al over the world. When EDI first started there was not internet and communication between computer devices was limited mainly to phone line. Companies from the Food Industries began using EDI due to the time and man power saving, and also in order to reduce errors that human usually makes when they create data. EDI is made of files and is basically a way to transfer files in a structures format agreed on by some standards (X12, EDIFACT) between different companies.

Each file has a file format/structure and that format called document or Transaction Set , and the whole goal of these file formats is that the receiver will know how to read the file when he gets it. There are many document types. The most popular EDI documents for X12 are:

* 850 which is a Purchase Order
* 810 which is an Invoice
* 997 Acknowledgment.

In order for a company to send Purchase order to the Supplier/Vendor, both companies, sometimes called Trading Partner need to setup their EDI System to recognize the sender. Each sender is begin recognize by a unique ID that the company and it Trading Partner agree on, for example DUNS Number, and then they can start sending EDI documents to each other. The way it work is that the sender/buyer will send an EDI 850 document to the supplier. After the supplier receive the document purchase order, the supplier EDI automatically send back to the sender an 997 Acknowledgment document so the sender will know that his order was received successfully. After the supplier fill in the order he send another EDI document, but this time this is an EDI 810 documents which is an Invoice. When the Sender/Buyer receive the Invoice his EDI system send automatically an Acknowledgment using the EDI 997 document that they got the Invoice Successfully. Since today this all done electronically without any human intervention, the Purchase Order and the Invoice are less likely to have errors. Some companies today, connect their EDI system to their ERP system, so every Purchase order that they get, immediately goes into the ERP system, Accounting system, update the warehouse items future inventory, something that may eliminate double orders by mistakes, and eliminate loosing the paper purchase order and Invoice.

There are also different EDI standards. EDI standards are basically different file format for the same document regulated by different organization. Today the most used standard is X12 and is being used all over the world especially in the U.S. and Canada. In addition there is the EDIFACT that is just like the X12 but has its own file format for the same type of documents (i.e. Purchase Order and Invoice) but is mostly used in Europe. The most popular EDI documents for EDIFACT are:

* ORDERS
* INVOIC (this is not a mistake, its really spelled without an 'E' at the end!)

Hopefully one day they will be united into one standard that is accepted all over the world. Every Year there is new EDI version that comes out and published by the parent organization which is ASC X12 and usually there are minor changes to existing documents and sometimes new documents, so if your going to pick an EDI solution, make sure that comply with all the previous version or at least all the version that you use + all the versions that your trading partner uses. Because most changes are minor, even if you use older version, your EDI software should be able to process the documents it was configured initially to process, but in some cases you might get error messages about invalid file format or invalid segment or invalid element. EDI X12 file structure is made of four levels:

1. ISA - Interchange Segment
2. GS - Group Segment
3. ST - Segment Transaction
4. Transaction Segments for specific ST

So what we got here is a tree view that look like this:
        ISA
                GS
                        ST
                                G50
                                G72
                        SE
                GE
        ISE
ST has multiple segments
GS may have one or more Transactions
ISA may have one or more Group segments
ISA, IEA GS, GE ST and SE are being called Control Segments where all the segments inside the ST being called Data Segments.
Sample of EDI 810 document:

A closer look at one of the Data Segments:
BIG*040713*1001*040625*P89320~
Each part between the asterisk sign called Element and the asterisk separates the elements from each other. In other cases, there could be a different character that separates the Element from each other. The same goes for the ~ which is the Segment Terminator.
The ~ sign tells the EDI system when the segment ends.
The first tokens, BIG, tells the EDI what this segments is all about, in this case BIG tell the system that this is 'Beginning Segment Invoice'
The second token, 040713, is the Invoice date formatted as YYMMDD, which is Year Month and Day, so in this case the Invoice Date would be July 13 2004
The third token 1001, is the Invoice Number.
The fourth element 040625, the date assigned by the purchaser to purchase order.
The fifth element P89320, Purchase Order Number for that Invoice.
The BIG data segment has more elements, but not all of them must be used. The ASC X12 define specifically which element are mandatory and which are optional.

Letters of Reference Defined

Shaun Fawcett 2006-07-29
Title: Letters of Reference Defined

Copyright © Shaun R. Fawcett

As I point out on the main page of my Web site, recommendation-reference-central.com, there is a great deal of general confusion about the differences and similarities between letters of reference and letters of recommendation. For instance; which is which, and why? How are they different? In what ways are they similar?

It's confusing enough for the average person who only has to write one of these letters every once in a while. However, when you look into it in-depth as I have, and realize that many of the so-called "experts" don't even know the differences between a reference letter and a recommendation letter, the general state of confusion is very understandable.

Based on extensive research into the subject, I define a "letter of reference" as one that is normally more general in nature than a letter of recommendation and IS NOT addressed to a specific requestor. Typically, "letters of reference" are addressed as; "To Whom It May Concern" or "Dear Sir/Madam".

The most common letters of reference are:

• Employment-related - general reference letter
• College-related - general reference letter
• Character reference letter - general-purpose personal reference
• General reference letter - various subjects

EMPLOYMENT-RELATED Reference Letter
These are more general letters that are often requested by employees when they leave the employ of an organization. Normally factual in nature, they are usually addressed, "To Whom It May Concern" and provide basic information such as: work history, dates of employment, positions held, educational credentials, etc.

These reference letters sometimes contain a general statement (as long as a positive one can be made), about the employee's work record with the company that they are leaving. Employees often submit these letters with job applications in the hope that the letter will reflect favorably on their chances for the new position.

COLLEGE-RELATED Reference Letter
These letters are very similar to college-related letters of recommendation, EXCEPT that they are not addressed to a specific individual or requestor. In the college and university context they are typically addressed to officials such as: Director, Admissions or Chairman, Scholarship Selection Committee, etc.

These college-related letters can be as specific as a recommendation letter when it comes to describing the subject/person about which the letter is written, but they are more general/generic in terms of targeted addressees. That's because at the time they are written it is often not clear exactly to which businesses or institutions they will be sent. For example, a person plans to apply to a number of colleges but when the letter is written, the specific colleges are unknown.

CHARACTER-RELATED Reference Letter
Character reference letters are always written about a specific person by someone who knows them fairly well, and usually focus on a person's general personality characteristics. They are often used in business and community service situations. Typically, a person will ask for a general character reference letter when they are leaving a company or service organization.

The focus of character reference letters are such personality characteristics as: honesty, integrity, trustworthiness, dependability, work ethic, values, community service, and other widely accepted indicators of individual character attributes. These letters are almost always used by people who provide personal and domestic services, where trust is an important factor.

These letters are typically addressed in a general way using "To Whom It May Concern" or "Dear Sir/Madam".

GENERAL PURPOSE Reference Letters
These reference letters deal with general situations that are not covered by the other reference letters described above. Typically, they address special situations such as tenant to landlord letters, business customer references, pet owner testimonials, etc. These letters are always addressed in a general way using "To Whom It May Concern" or "Dear Sir/Madam".

Watch Out…
Over the years, the line between “letters of reference” and “letters of recommendation” has become quite blurred, and many people and institutions now use the two terms interchangeably. As far as those organizations are concerned, both letters are exactly the same thing.

Accordingly, many colleges and universities, as well as some companies and institutions, use the terms "reference letters" and/or "letters of reference" when referring to exactly the same thing as what many other colleges, universities, companies and institutions call "recommendation letter" and/or "letter of recommendation".

So, when dealing with these types of organizations or institutions, MAKE SURE that you use whichever term they use in the same way that they use it. DON'T try to convert them to your terminology. That will just confuse things and you will pay the price.

The Law on Employment References

Bob Alexander 2008-02-15
Title: The Law on Employment References
Under UK law, there is no legal obligation on an employer to provide an employee or former employee with an employment reference, thus an employer can legally decline such a request for a reference. The employee has no right under the employment contract to be granted a reference, even though undoubtedly obtaining a reference is an important aspect in getting a job.

However, if an employer does provide a reference, whether written or oral, it must be accurate. Once an employer provides a reference he can be liable in respect of an erroneous reference due to negligence, and he owes a duty of care to those prospective employers who may rely on the truth of such reference.

In giving an employment reference, the employer must take reasonable care not to give misleading information about the employee, that might be so construed by a prospective employer. He must also take reasonable steps to verify the information on which the reference is based.

An employer in providing a reference concerning an employee or former employee owes a duty of care to the employee regarding the preparation of the reference and can be liable to the employee in damages as a result of negligent misstatements. An employee has a remedy in negligence only if he can establish that an inaccurate reference was due to the employers lack of care. There is no action for negligence if the statement is true. Deliberately false statements in references can result in defamation claims and it is possible for an aggrieved employee who fails to secure employment by reason solely of the falsehood of such statement to sue for resulting economic loss.

UK courts in employment cases have recognised that a balance needs to be struck between the duty of care in the preparation of employment references and the need for open and frank communication on matters relevant to the employment record of the employee. The interpretation of employment references can be a fertile ground for litigation and employers must exercise reasonable care in considering whether to provide an employment reference and its substance and form.

The Story Behind Walnuts

Clyde Lee Dennis 2007-09-24
Title: The Story Behind Walnuts
The first record of walnut trees date back to approximately 2000 B.C. in ancient Babylon. Though this is the first recorded history there is fossilized evidence that suggests walnuts have been around even longer than that. In fact there is a reference to what some translators have declared are walnuts in the Old Testament. There is some debate concerning this reference however. Some believe the reference to King Solomon growing nuts in the Old Testament are actually in reference to almonds.

The Greeks have been credited with the first certified improvements of the size and quality of the walnut trees now called of Persian, which is today called English walnut trees. These improvements were made through choice and cultivation methods. Very soon thereafter the Romans established the Persian walnut trees in all the major parts of Europe and much of the region that is now North Africa.

English Walnuts made their way and were introduced into the United States by Franciscan monks in the early 1800's along the California coast. Because the English walnut orchards, that were rapidly established in Central California came from the seeds planted from those walnuts that grew in the Catholic missions, the walnuts were sold and distributed under the name ‘Mission Walnuts.’

To this very day Central California walnut tree growers still produce 99% of the total U.S. commercial English walnut supplies. Even more interesting is that 65% of the world's supply of English walnuts are produced in California.

Walnuts have made their way into many widely used recipes. Many of the worlds most popular restaurants have menus that include walnuts in many different items. These many different items include meats, vegetables, desserts, and soups. Among these popular dishes is the world famous desert called Baklava. Which is made from walnuts, honey, and paper-thin, buttered, flakes of crust.

In general Walnut trees mature in approximately 60 years and grow to about 60 feet tall.

Another type of walnut is the Black Walnut. The Black walnut tree is an American native tree and is grown mainly from New England to Minnesota and Nebraska and southwards down to the Gulf of Mexico. The black walnut tree can grow to a height of 60 feet and can live well over 100 years. Black walnut trees are grown mainly for their value in making furniture.

Black Walnuts are indeed harvested in considerably large quantities to use in baking, ice cream, and in candy recipes. The nuts can be easily shelled into large pieces if soaked overnight in water. Black walnuts are known for their crunchy flavor, which is distinctively spicy and enriched in its oil content.

Getting A Heat Pump? Know The ARI Reference Number

Boris Sherman 2007-06-25
Title: Getting A Heat Pump? Know The ARI Reference Number
So, the day has finally arrived -- the contractor is installing your heat pump. What to look for? Even if you don't check anything else, you must verify the ARI reference number before the installation. This number is a very important piece of information about a heat pump. The ARI reference number guarantees that the heat pump is an Energy Star unit with the proper SEER rating and the correct amount of cooling. Every air source heat pump must have the ARI reference number. These next paragraphs will make you an expert on the ARI reference number.

An air source heat pump has two main parts - the condensing unit installed outside of the house and the evaporator installed inside the ductwork. For a heat pump to work up to specs, or sometimes to work at all, these two components must be properly matched. Each condenser works properly with only a limited number of evaporator models. Each of the matches has a unique identifier -- the ARI reference number. Think of the ARI reference number as the marriage certificate for the components of your heat pump. It's that simple.

On the invoice, among other information, you contractor must show three crucial pieces of data – the model number for the condenser, the model number for the evaporator, and the ARI reference number. Before the evaporator gets concealed inside the ductwork for good, check that the model number on the evaporator matches the number on the invoice. Do the same for the condenser.

Now, go to http://www.ceehvacdirectory.org/hp.php?reset=true At the very top of the page, type into the window the ARI reference number from the invoice. Click “Search The Database”. This is the moment of truth. The site will give you the model numbers for the condenser and for the evaporator, as well as the SEER rating for the heat pump and its cooling capacity. Do they match the numbers on the invoice? They'd better to. If they don't, do not allow the contractor to proceed with the installation. Do not accept ANY excuses. That would be my best advice to you.

How to Configure a Linux NTP Server

Dave Evans 2007-02-21
Title: How to Configure a Linux NTP Server
Network Time Protocol (NTP) provides algorithms and defines messages for the synchronisation of time clients to an accurate time reference. This article discusses how to configure a Linux NTP Time Server to synchronise time with an Internet based public NTP Server.

NTP server systems fall into two categories: primary reference servers and secondary reference servers. Primary reference servers use an external timing reference to provide time, such as GPS or radio clocks. Secondary reference servers synchronise with primary reference NTP servers and offer slightly reduced accuracy. Primary reference servers are designated stratum 1 servers, while secondary servers have a stratum greater than 1.

The NTP Distribution

The NTP source code is freely available from the Network Time Protocol web site. The current version available for download is 4.2.4. NTP is available for the Linux operating systems with ports available for Windows NT. Once the source code is downloaded, it should be configured, compiled and installed on the host machine. Many Linux operating systems, such as RedHat, offer NTP RPM packages.

Configuring NTP

The ‘ntp.conf’ file is main source of configuration information for a NTP server installation. Amongst other things, it contains a list of reference clocks that the installation is to synchronise. A list of NTP server references is specified with the ‘server’ configuration command thus:

server time-a.nist.gov # NIST, Gaithersburg, Maryland NTP server server time-c.timefreq.bldrdoc.gov # NIST, Boulder, Colorado NTP server

Controlling the NTP Server Daemon

Once configured, the NTP daemon can be started, stopped and restarted using the commands: ‘ntpd start’; ‘ntpd stop’ and ‘ntpd restart’. The NTP server daemon can be queried using the ‘ntpq –p’ command. The ntpq command queries the NTP server for synchronisation status and provides a list of servers with synchronisation information for each server.

NTP Access Control

Access to the NTP server can be restricted using the ‘restrict’ directive in the ntp.conf file. You can restrict all access to the NTP server with:

restrict default ignore

To only allow machines on your own network to synchronize with the server use:

restrict 192.168.1.0 mask 255.255.255.0 nomodify notrap

Multiple restrict directives can be specified in the ntp.conf file to restrict access to a specified range of computers.

Authentication Options

Authentication allows a matching passwords to be specified by the NTP server and associated clients. NTP keys are stored in the ntp.keys file in the following format: Key-number M Key (The M stands for MD5 encryption), e.g.:

1 M secret 5 M RaBBit 7 M TiMeLy 10 M MYKEY In the NTP configuration file ntp.conf, specify which of the keys specified above are trusted, i.e. are secure and you want to use. Any keys specified in the keys file but not trusted will not be used for authentication, e.g.:

trustedkey 1 7 10

The NTP server is now configured for authentication.

Client Configuration for Authentication

The client needs to be configured with similar information as the server, however, you may use a subset of the keys specified on the server. A different subset of keys can be used on different clients, e.g.:

Client A) 1 M secret 7 M TiMeLy

trustedkey 1 7

Client B) 1 M secret 5 M RaBBit 7 M TiMeLy 10 M MYKEY

trustedkey 7 10

Essentially authentication is used by the client to authenticate that the time server is who he says he is, and that no rogue server intervenes. The key is encrypted and sent to the client by the server where it is unencrypted and checked against the client keys to ensure a match.

About ARI. It stands for Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute. ARI is a trade association that represents the manufacturers of more than 90 percent of the air conditioning and commercial refrigeration equipment installed in North America. An internationally recognized leader in developing standards for these products, as well as certifying their performance, ARI is also a major advocate for the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) industry both domestically and abroad.

How To Write A Living, Breathing Character Reference Letter

Title: How To Write A Living, Breathing Character Reference Letter

As a result of my time in business, I have had many excellent examples of a character reference letter. A good character reference letter is priceless to some. The people who guard well the things they say and the things they do will always get a great character reference letter.

Every experience in life, everything with which we have come in contact in life, is a chisel which has been cutting away at our life statue, molding, modifying, shaping it. We are part of all we have met. Everything we have seen, heard, felt or thought has had its hand in molding us, shaping us.
- Orison Marden

Without doubt, character is about choice. The many actions and decisions that you make daily assist in forming character. I like to call it the constant pitter patter of life. Electing to perform positive daily tasks has a tremendous effect on forming character. Your actions! Your words! Consider them! Improve them! They impact your character daily.

What I have found over the years is that those who can stand upright in the face of scrutiny have an abundance of integrity. They know what it means to say no in the face of everyone else crying yes. That is not an easy thing to do.

I have also found that many of those who make the most noise draw the biggest crowd. That is unfortunate because those with character and integrity should really be the ones leading. Their decisions will always be wise decisions.

I have taught my 7 year old grandson to make sure that the things that you do in the dark will always be able to stand up in the glare of daylight. He understands that he is the victor when he turns his back on folly.
What I usually say to him is that your words must be screened, filtered and then weighed before you send them out to work for you.

We laugh because he teases me sometimes. He loves to mock me and say that I should keep my guard up and protect myself at all times. We laugh some more.
Presently we are reading a doubleday book by Peter Schweizer called Do As I Say Not As I Do. It is a short book of about 250 pages. Schweizer begins the book by thanking the celebrities for living such inconsistent lives.

We thought that to be a bit on the comical side. However, when you get to reading the book, it is not so funny. The people are well known and well liked. They say they espouse certain beliefs, but they live contrary to those beliefs.

At the end of the day, the easiest letters for me to write have been for people who have been living examples of a character reference letter. Conversely, the most difficult letter for me to write has been for people who have been hypocritical examples of a character reference letter.
