What do you know about properly grooming your dog? Dog grooming is extremely important and your responsibility as a dog owner. Dogs generally need to be bathed once a month, brushed weekly, have their nails clipped, and some dog breeds need to be taken to the groomer every couple of months to have their coats trimmed. A properly groomed dog is a happier and healthier dog and makes for a happier dog owner!

Many dog breeds do not need regular visits to the groomer. Shorter-haired dogs like Labradors, Boxers, and Bulldogs do not need to have their coats trimmed, but longer-haired dogs such as Collies, Scottish Terriers, and Poodles do need to visit the groomer every 4-6 weeks for a trim. Regular visits ensure that your dog’s coat is free of tangles and well-maintained.

Dog grooming also includes brushing your dog’s coat, whether he has long or short hair. Regular brushing removes your dog’s dead hair. This dead hair is what normally will shed, but with regular brushing you can brush out most of the dead hair and your dog will shed much less as a result. Brushing your dog also distributes the hairs natural oils, which makes the coat shiny and healthy looking. It’s amazing what a good brushing can do in making your dog’s coat shine. Not to mention, what dog doesn’t like a good brushing?!

Proper dog grooming also means trimming your dog’s nails. This may seem like a daunting task to some until you and your dog get used to it. You can buy a good nail clipper at any pet store. Make sure to buy one that fits your dog. Some dogs have small nails like Chihuahuas; other breeds like Labradors need a much larger nail clipper. If you don’t feel comfortable clipping your own dog’s nails, many pet stores offer this service for a reasonable price. Proper exercise of your dog should keep his nails at a good length but they will need to be trimmed occasionally. Be very careful not to trim the nails too short as dog’s have a fleshy material inside their nails called quick. If nails are trimmed too short and you cut the quick, it is painful for your dog.

Are you bathing your dog once a month? This is a general rule of thumb. If your dog spends a lot of time outside running around or going to the beach, chances are he will need to be bathed more often than a dog that spends most of his time indoors snuggled up at your feet. It’s important to spend a little bit more on dog shampoo, especially if your dog has any kind of skin conditions. Unfortunately, the less expensive brands of dog shampoo have harsher ingredients that can strip away too much of your dog’s natural oils, drying the skin and possibly causing skin irritations. You may want to ask your vet for recommendations for the best shampoo for your particular dog.

Dog grooming is of the utmost importance in dog ownership! Most dog owners take pride in having a healthy, well-groomed dog. Bathing your dog, clipping his nails, and brushing him are also good bonding experiences for dog and owner. Take your time in grooming your pooch and enjoy the experience. A happy, healthy, well-groomed dog makes for a happy owner!

Grooming your American Bandog Mastiff

Sam Daniels 2008-04-25
Title: Grooming your American Bandog Mastiff
The grooming for an American Bandog Mastiff is pretty since they are short-haired. Train your Mastiff while yet a puppy to stand still for brushing and grooming. This will make it much easier for you when your puppy has matured and then weighs over 100 pounds.

Your puppy probably won’t like grooming at first. Be patient, kind, and gentle while grooming. Don’t use force especially if your pup is afraid of grooming. If you are calm and consistent soon your Mastiff will enjoy spending this time with you.

Grooming activities include bathing, brushing, cleaning the eyes and ears, and clipping the toenails. You won’t do all of these everyday, however you should check the ears and brush your pet every day.

Bathe your American Bandog Mastiff regularly. By doing so it will reduce the shedding plus your dog will smell better. However, don’t bathe too often as too much bathing is bad for their skin. Generally, once a month is sufficient unless your dog begins to smell.

Be sure to use dog shampoo when bathing your dog. Many owners use people shampoo on their dogs and that may be alright for some breeds, but for Mastiffs it will ruin its coat as well as lead to rashes and eczema. Bathing in the bathtub actually will work or a large plastic or metal tub outside can be used.

Everyday your Mastiff should be brushed down to get rid of dandruff, dead hair, and dust. Otherwise these things remain in the coat until it is brushed. Also when your dog is brushed daily it reduces shedding, prevents skin infections, and even improves odor. Brush your puppy a few minutes the first week or two then gradually increase the time to help your Mastiff puppy get used to it.

You can use a firm bristle-brush, rubber brush, or dog glove to aid in brushing your puppy. Or you can brush with no tools at all. To do this, simply wet your hands and then brush with your hands from tail to head. Rinse your hands and do it again only from head to tail this time. After brushing, rub its coat with a cloth to make it shiny.

Along with brushing you should clean your dog’s ears everyday to prevent mites and infections. Because the insides of Mastiffs’ ears do not dry very the wax stays moist providing a breeding ground for mites and bacteria which can cause smelly painful ear infections.

Do not use a Q-tip or anything like it to clean the ears as this is more likely to push wax further into the ears. Instead use a soft dry cloth and wipe the parts of the ears you can see.

Mastiffs tend to have messy eyes, especially if they have a lot of loose skin around their eyes. This can lead to eye infections and must be cleaned as often as necessary. Use a soft wet cloth and gently wipe the eye from the inside out. Be sure not to wipe too hard as you could irritate the eyes.

Toenail clipping is probably the most intimidating task in grooming because if you do it wrong your dog can bleed quite a bit. Some owners pay for their dog to get their toenails clipped for this reason. However, it can get costly.

Your Mastiffs toenails should be clipped weekly because if they grow to long it is uncomfortable for your dog to walk and it is harder to clip them as well. You will need to use the largest size of dog clippers you can find. It’s important that you teach your dog to be still during this grooming activity.

Other grooming in which your American Bandog Mastiff could benefit from is to regularly brush its teeth and clip the hair between the pads of feet. This will keep your pet in tiptop shape.

Manicure and Teeth Cleaning

Hollywood Grooming is widely known for their love and extra special care for all pets and they treat your pet like their own. But don't take my word for it I've interviewed two of their newest clients and because I am a fluent speaker of the Brunish and Daisic Canine dialects, I've translated their replies into English.

Bruno is a white Shepherd who is getting on in years and is beginning to complain of hip pains, his favorite thing to do, is go for rides in the SUV his dad bought for him. He used to be able to jump right up into the vehicle but now-a-days finds he needs coaxing and sometimes help because it can hurt to jump. He has been good-natured about going to get groomed although the height of the washing tables scare him a little. He does loves the results, liking to show off how handsome he is when he is a newly cleaned fluff ball.

The Furs A Flyin'

Daisy is a Dalmatian, she is deaf and does not like being left behind at a groomers. Frequently driving them crazy because she won't keep quiet with all her complaining about being locked up in a cage. Her favorite thing to do is eat and she likes being clean. She doesn't make a "thing of it" like Bruno does, because she always knows she looks good even if she is dirty. "It's just another look, I can pull off effortlessly, that one month dirty hair grunge, look." She says.

Rub a Dub Dub

Neither of them were all that excited to try out Hollywood Groomers but since the appointment had already been scheduled, they both agreed to be sporting about it all. The morning of the grooming arrived and both dogs ran out to met their groomer, he passed the smell test and before any of us knew it Daisy had a leash around her neck and she was happily trotting after him to the van. She readily jumped into the van and was eager to get on with it all. Bruno and I followed along interested in what was happening.

The groomer told me it was ok to have Bruno accompany Daisy so they could share notes on what was happening. I attempted to get Bruno into the van but found they were parked to close to some garden plants and he couldn't get a running start, like he felt he needed to jump up. I explained to the groomer about Bruno's hesitancy and fear of hurting himself as I got myself, the leash and plants all tangled up together in my vain attempts to lure Bruno into the van. The groomer got out, took the leash from me stroked Bruno, talked to him, gave him a treat, then simply invited him up into the van and Bruno jumped right in, like there was nothing to it.

Wash & Dry

I began to wonder what I was so worried about. I looked into the immaculately clean van at Daisy beginning her bath and Bruno checking everything out and satisfied, left them all to it.

In what seemed like no time my door opened as Bruno came prancing in to show off how beautiful he looked. Daisy was just outside the door engaged in friendly chatter with the groomer as he slipped her some treats. They both were as white and clean as can be and looked gorgeous. Each was sporting a fancy new scarf and seemed very proud of themselves.I thanked their groomer and everyone said his or her goodbyes. Tails wagged and everyone went satisfied, back to their daily tasks. When I interviewed the canines who now truly looked like the stars they were treated as, they had the following to say.

Bruno says: Two paws up

Bruno: Woof, woooo, woooof, off, wooof ruff. (This basically translates into "They were very understanding with me, I didn't need to tell them to be gently with my hips, or warn them about pulling my long hair. No, you could tell they knew just what they were doing and boy did they have magic fingers, and the hot oil treatment made my dry skin feel so suppple. My favorite part? Was the brushing and then the mini massage It was fantastic.)

Daisy says: Loved it

Daisy: RUFF, RRruuff, ruff, woof, grrrrrrr, bark, bark, bark. (I was so surprised to find the leash around my neck, I just felt so secure. I'd have followed that man anywhere. When I got into the van, I looked around and it was pretty, it looked brand new, all clean, shiny and white. I felt very luxurious and pampered as they brushed my teeth, cleaned my ears, eyes and gave me a blow dry. I can see why people can get addicted to this. I want to do it again and again. Everyone was so friendly and nice and even though I couldn't hear them, we understood each other perfectly. My favorite part? Well of course, it was the treats!)

Bright & Shiny

No more trips to the groomers for these two. They found it very easy and acceptable to be treated like a star. I'm sure your four pawed loved ones would agree. Why not let them try it for themselves.

Recommended Dog Grooming Equipments For a Happier Dog Owner!

Mike II Arroyo 2007-06-05
Title: Recommended Dog Grooming Equipments For a Happier Dog Owner!
Grooming your dog has never been easier with the right grooming tools out in the market nowadays. From bathing up to trimming their nails, there are grooming equipments which makes grooming experience easier and enjoyable for both ends. Even though there are times that it is hard to give your stubborn dog the cleaning he needs, it is solely your responsibility as their master to maintain their cleanliness and well being.

Here are some grooming equipments that should always be consider to properly clean and groom your dog.

Dog Shampoo, Conditioner
Dog shampoos and conditioners are the basic essentials to properly wash away dirts which your dog acquires from his daily activities. In choosing the best dog shampoo and conditioner you have to consider how often you need to clean your dog. Giving your dog a bath should depend on how dirty he is, it is because frequent bathing will strips away his natural protective oil that irritates their already sensitive skin. The best way to tell if your dog needs a bath is through his smell and of course his appearance. But if your dog is involved with too much outdoor activity choose a dog shampoo that is mild and has a moisturizing effect. A conditioner specifically formulated for dry skin is also recommended to give your dog the extra moisture and for a longer lasting clean smell as well.

Never use a human shampoo on your dog; because human shampoo has a higher PH level that can irritate you dog’s skin and also their eyes. Not to mention dog shampoo has an easy rinse formula and also deodorize well and leave your dog's coat shiny for a longer time compared to human shampoo that is formulated for human hair.

Dog Nail Clipper and Dog Hair Clipper
Dogs nail should not be taken for granted for it is one of the most important in taking good care of your pet’s health. Dog nails is one of the most favorite living areas of germs in which also could cause an infection. Dog hair clipper is also an essential tool in grooming your dogs long hair and also a great solution in giving your dog an immediate relief to some skin problems. Before using the dog hair clippers make sure that your dog’s hair is thoroughly dry. Do not use clippers made for human beings, it is because human hair clippers will not stand up to the rigors of dog grooming. By using dog hair clipper you can give your dog the special cut that will boost their appearance which will definitely make you hug them.

Dog Brush and Comb
For long haired dogs, frequent brushing is a must to avoid tangles in their hair. Brushing your dog’s hair before bathing is also recommended to remove dead hairs, that is because water creates tight matts in the loose hairs.

Dog Dental Care Supplies
As many veterinarian said, oral disease affects over 80% of dogs by the time they're three years old. This could only mean that dental care should not be taken for granted. You can use a dental finger brush with a dental gel for dog and gently rub their teeth. Do not use toothpaste made for human being for it might upset your dog’s stomach and might scare your dog from the taste of human toothpaste. There are also dental chews that can help massage your dog’s gum while reducing plaque and tartar.

Dog Grooming: 7 Most Frequently Asked Dog Grooming Questions & Its Answers

John Rappaport 2007-02-01
Title: Dog Grooming: 7 Most Frequently Asked Dog Grooming Questions & Its Answers
Although it's often overlooked, grooming is an important part of your dog's health and wellness program. Here are some of the most frequently asked dog grooming questions our experts at PetPlace.com are asked by their 600,000 visitors per month:

1. When should I start grooming my dog?

Start regular grooming when you first bring your dog home and make it a part of his or her routine. Purchase a good-quality brush and comb and get your dog used to being handled. Praise your dog when he or she holds still and soon he or she will come to enjoy the extra attention. Some breeds have special grooming needs, so ask your vet or a professional groomer for advice on particular grooming equipment necessary for your particular dog.

2. How often should I brush my dog’s hair?

Routine brushing and combing removes dead hair and dirt and prevents matting, while giving your pet a healthier and shinier coat.

Your dog's skin and hair coat reflects his or her overall health and nutritional status. Many dogs maintain a healthy skin and hair coat with minimal assistance. Some long-haired or curly-haired breeds require regular brushing. For most dogs, a good brushing once or twice a week will do the trick.

3. How often should I bathe my dog?

Your dog’s need for bathing depends on its breed, the skin type and hair coat. It also depends on the owner’s preference and how dirty your dog gets. Bathing your dog every month or two isn't unreasonable, but some dogs will need more frequent cleanings. A good rule of thumb is to bathe your pet only when the coat gets dirty or begins to smell “doggy.”

When bathing your dog, make sure to rinse all the soap out of the coat. If there are persistent problems with scratching or flaky skin, he or she may need a special medicated shampoo or have a skin problem that your veterinarian should examine.

4. What skin problems are common among dogs and what should I look for?

Skin problems – including fleas, ticks and mites or allergies and infections – are common among dogs. Most conditions are manageable with early detection and treatment. If you notice excessive scratching, hair loss or flaky skin, contact your veterinarian. If your pet is continuously exposed to fleas and ticks, speak to your veterinarian about products to minimize the parasite’s impact on your dog’s skin. Remember that consistently poor hair coat with lots of skin flaking may indicate a deeper medical problem.

5. I have problems cleaning my dog’s ears. What’s the best way to clean his ears and how often should it be cleaned.

Ears also require cleaning, especially in dogs with oily skin or allergies. This is a delicate task and is probably best left to your vet. However, if your dog is easy to handle (and there is no chance that you will be bitten), you can learn to do this chore yourself. To remove excessive wax and debris from the ears, consider an ear cleaning every two to four weeks. Ask your veterinarian about products you can use at home, and be sure to ask for a demonstration of proper ear cleaning techniques.

6. I have problems keeping my dog still so I can trim its nails. Do you have any nail trimming advice?

While clipping nails is a painless and simple process, it takes practice and patience to master the skill. When you muster enough courage to trim the nails of your dog, you’ll need a good nail clipper, a nail file to rub any sharp edge away and a styptic stick to stop any subsequent bleeding easily.

Ask your vet to show you the correct technique, and then get started by getting your pet used to having his or her paws handled. Once you start using the clippers, go slowly. Try clipping just a few nails in one sitting. Maintain a regular schedule and be persistent. Your pet will eventually develop patience and learn to cooperate.

7. What is the most important thing to include in my dog grooming kit?

The most important thing required in your grooming kit is your own confidence. It will form and take shape within you and grow in time.

So, go ahead and start grooming your dog. If you can overcome your hesitation, beautiful and rewarding experiences are waiting for you. Grooming your dog properly helps to keep him or her healthy while building an important bond between you and your pet.

Simple Truths You Need To Know About Dog Grooming

Title: Simple Truths You Need To Know About Dog Grooming
Dog grooming is all that you need to turn your pet dog into a responsible member of the family.

Grooming your dog will help keep her in a great state of health and increases the bond between you and your dog.

It would ensure that your pet is free from parasites, and the coat will be both healthy and shiny. The dental health of the dog is also a part of the dog grooming practice.

Most dogs might be restless when the grooming is just starting off but after a while they tend to get used to it and then really begin to enjoy it.Interestingly also it increases the beauty of the dog.

Dogs that have particularly long hair, get such trimmed and combed which puts the hair in the right formation. This also prevents the tangling of hair like that of the Rastafarian.

Dogs that lack grooming can really stink, with bad breath. If you were like me I guess you would not like to hang around with stinking pets. But good grooming practice can take care of this.

Although the best place to get good grooming for your dog is from a professional. But the fact now is you can learn about it and do it at home and save some dollars.

Usually a grooming session includes; 1. Bathing the dog properly and thoroughly 2. Then followed by antiseptic dip to remove ticks, fleas and other external parasites 3. A good brushing of the coat to hair tangles and matted hair 4. Then the hair can be styled, the nails are then trimmed since the are pets to prevent them from harming anyone 5. The ear is also cleaned and checked for parasites as this is a good hiding place for them

6.Lastly the teeth cleaning which also tackles bad breath.

The breed of your dog determines how regularly you do the grooming the more hair the more frequently such should be done. Some just have silk coats like Labradors retrievers and Dachshunds.

They require less grooming except for brushing which could be weekly since their hair would not matt or tangle. But long and curly coated dogs like Poodles, Sheepdogs, require more grooming like once in a month.

The fact remains that good dog grooming is just right for your pets. Make sure you do it as and at when due.

The Importance of Pet Grooming

Larry Johnson 2006-05-05
Title: The Importance of Pet Grooming
Current info about pet grooming is not always the easiest thing to locate. Fortunately, this report includes the latest pet grooming information available.

The more authentic information about pet grooming you know, the more likely people are to consider you a pet grooming expert. Read on for even more facts that you can share.

We all know that basic dog grooming or cat grooming is a necessary evil, but do we give our animals all that they deserve? Do we even know what kind of dog grooming supplies we need? Why own a pet at all if we are not going to love and care for it properly? There are so many animal facilities available, both stationary and mobile, there is absolutely no excuse for an unkempt animal. Whether you have a dog, cat, rabbit, horse or other animal you care for it is imperative that they get the attention they deserve.

Admittedly there are a few owners that go way overboard when it comes to their pets. There are places that will provide exercise and socialization, spa treatments and even birthday parties. Some owners think of their pet as a family member and indulge them unmercifully. When it comes to cucumber facial masks and aromatherapy that may be taking things a bit too far, but that is an owner's exclusive right or privilege. However, this article is not concerned with overindulgence, but with the basic necessity of rabbit , horse or cat grooming plus shih tzu, poodle or other types of dog grooming. A well-groomed animal is much easier to love.

So exactly what does pet grooming involve? What type of dog grooming products do we need? The basics to cat or dog grooming, and even the job to groom other animals for that matter, is simple. It boils down to a shower, shave and a haircut along with a couple of other easy procedures. Obviously, keeping your animal's hair the proper length is very important for its appearance. This can involve either cutting or brushing the hair. Some pets never need a cut while others look much better with an occasional clipping. With some animals regular brushing will be enough to keep the hair nice and neat.

Bathing is another important step in keeping your pet groomed properly. This is a simple matter of hosing them down, rubbing in some shampoo and then rinsing them off. This can be done in a tub or outside with a garden hose. With regular bathing and brushing 90 percent of the chore is done. The other main ingredients to successfully keeping your pet looking its best are using clippers for clipping nails and possibly a little flea control. There is not much more to it than that. Sure, it is possible to spend a lot more time and money on mobile pet grooming, pet grooming supplies, oiling down the coat, tools, products and other extravagances, but it is not really necessary. Now if you have a show animal on the other hand it becomes a whole new ball game. But the basics are simple, wash, cut or brush, clip and flea control.

If you are the lazy type or just do not have enough time to spend on this job it is a simple matter of finding a mobile pet grooming company that will do the job for you. Or even a dog grooming school. Of course you will pay more, but if having your animal look its best is important to you this is certainly a consideration. If you are going to do the work yourself you might want to search for some online instructions, videos or tips.

You cannot predict when knowing something extra about pet grooming will come in handy. If you learned anything new in this article, you should file the article where you can find it again. As your knowledge about pet grooming continues to grow, you will begin to see how important of a subject this really is.

Grooming your Dog at Home

sue gardner 2007-12-06
Title: Grooming your Dog at Home

Every dog needs a grooming routine, as a vital part of keeping healthy.

A dog's grooming needs will differ according to the breed, age and health issues, but regular attention will help to detect and prevent problems like runny eyes, ear and skin problems, flea infestation, and overgrown/in growing nails. For dogs that receive a regular professional groom maintenance is important between visits, it is amazing how quickly a dog’s coat can become a matted mess.

If you own a puppy, you may wonder when you should start grooming him/her. I would advise starting as soon as possible, to get your puppy used to the regime. A little gentle brushing every day with an appropriate brush or comb will get the pup used to being handled and give you a chance to check the mouth, ears, anal area and nails. It is useful to stand your dog on a table while grooming, a dog will usually stand more quietly that way, and it makes things easier for the groomer, but keep hold of the dog for safety's sake. It may be useful to invest in a Dog / cat Grooming Table , which is built for the purpose, and should have a textured surface to offer more grip, and a control arm with loops. Safety comes first-if using a neck loop it is advisable to pass a second loop around the dog's belly, and in any case, never leave a dog unattended on the table. Teach your dog to stand for grooming, using clicker or treat training, and you will have fewer problems later on. You will also be amazed at how a few minutes per day spent handling and grooming your pet will make such a difference in how he interacts with the family!

Choosing the right grooming tools is important -what may be great for one dog, could be totally unsuitable for another

. • For short coated breeds like the Labrador retriever the best tools massage the skin and bring out dead hair and dandruff, the ZoomGroom and the Furminator are good examples of this.

. • For medium double-coated breeds like the German Shepherd and Collie, you need a brush that will penetrate the coat more deeply. A slicker brush is ideal, accompanied by a comb. When the dog has been thoroughly brushed with the slicker, run the comb through the whole coat, checking for tangles, that way you can be sure the dog is groomed all the way to the skin. A Furminator or shedding rake can be useful for these breeds too-it is great for heavily shedding dogs, getting every last dead hair out till the coat shines with health.

• For single coated, non shedding breeds like the Bichon Frise, and any breed of dog that is clipped, a slicker and comb is my recommendation, with perhaps a pin brush for sensitive areas.

• For wire coated and hand stripped dogs i.e. Airedale, Fox Terrier, use a slightly blunted stripping knife, a Furminator or ZoomGroom, and a slicker brush.

Dog shampoo should also be chosen carefully as the right products can really aid your pet’s health and well being. If your dog's coat is prone to tangling, use a good quality conditioner as well, which will not only make brushing easier, but also will speed up drying time for you, and keep your dogs coat and skin in good condition. Choose products that fulfil the needs of your dog's coat and skin type.
Pet dogs can be washed regularly - you can use your judgement on how often, shampooing with the proper products should not harm your dog's coat or skin. Skin problems are far more likely to be associated with diet and environmental factors than by regular bathing. It is wise to remove any tangles or knots before bathing, as water can cause them to tighten.

If, for whatever reason, the grooming regime has been temporarily abandoned, and your pet has knots that cannot be brushed out, then seek professional help from a groomer, as tugging at the hair will only cause pain, fear and resentment in your dog. In such situations, the kind course of action is usually to lift out the mats with clippers, and start fresh.

Nail clipping is another important procedure for your dog to get used to. Many dogs dislike having their nails clipped, particularly those of the front paws. Be very careful not to cut the quick of the nail, and remember to treat each nail as an individual when choosing where to cut. It is easier to tell where to cut when the dog has white nails, rather than black, if in doubt ask your vet or groomer to trim the nails. Some dogs never need their nails cut, some have nails that grow like wildfire, and some nails grow round and back into the foot if left unchecked. Many dogs will be professionally groomed every six weeks or so, in which case the groomer will have checked the nails and clipped if necessary as part of the service.

Ear care is another area of importance, excessive wax, redness, scratching, excessive matting of hair in the external ear, rubbing, head shaking, smelly ears and disorientation can all be signs of ear problems. Check your pet's ears regularly for these signs-don’t be afraid to sniff the ears- healthy ears should not smell foul. Floppy eared dogs are particularly prone to infections, as the air doesn’t tend to circulate the ear canal. It is sometimes necessary to clear the hair from the ear canal, at least partially, to allow more air flow. Again this is a regular part of a professional grooming service. If you suspect ear problems do consult your vet, as those sorts of problems can become a long running battle without proper care.

Many breeds of dog suffer from weepy eyes, which can stain the coat in an unsightly way. Keeping the area clean and free of excess hair will help reduce the cause of the staining, which are the tears. Have the eyes checked whilst at the vets, to make sure there are no underlying causes. Stained eye hair can usually be removed by the professional groomer, to good effect, as can similar staining of feet caused by saliva as the dog washes his or her feet.

To conclude, regular grooming little and often, and with the right products , will help keep your dog beautiful ,comfortable, healthy and happy, which is what we all want for our beloved companions!

Pet Grooming: How to Keep your Pet Happy and Healthy

Brien Berdon 2006-12-05
Title: Pet Grooming: How to Keep your Pet Happy and Healthy

You know the best way to keep your dog happy, healthy, and safe is to have them well groomed and trained. You can take your pet to a professional or do it yourself with the proper equipment and training.

You will be pleased to find out that qualified, experienced groomers often offer pet grooming seminars for advice and trimming demonstrations for your pet. Of course, there is the old "trial and error" method, but this can be frustrating. Better to do some online research, buy a book on grooming, take a class or get some form of professional training first.

Effective Grooming

Certain pets must be groomed from the skin outward to truly be effective in taking care of their coat of hair and keeping it healthy. Comb through the coat starting at the legs of the animal and then work your way to the body; this will allow you to get rid of all the shedding fur.

You must groom your pet on a regular basis if your pet goes outside frequently or is one of those hard to manage type of animals. Also, some animals require grooming all at once, while other animals have so much hair that it is easier to do a little at a time each day. If you need to groom kittens you should do them all at the same time, because the fleas readily travel among the kittens throughout the day.

Buying Pet Grooming Supplies

Buying equipment for pet grooming can be tricky if you do not know exactly what you need. Here again you should consult a professional before purchasing pet grooming supplies. This will save you time and money. Also, it is important to note that the more expensive equipment will perform better, last longer and help you prevent repetitive strain injuries.

Professional Pet Grooming

A professional groomer will be sensitive to you and your pets needs. After all, they are interested in gaining you and your pets trust. Large and small pet stores generally offer pet grooming services, but you may also find competent groomers working out of their home.

A professional pet groomer will have to go through intensive hands on grooming training before they are able to receive their pet grooming licenses. A grooming business does not just wash your pet. Groomers will also provide services such as, trimming the pet's nails, cleaning their teeth, and shaving their coat. A professional pet groomer will know exactly what your over excited pet needs to stay calm and relaxed during their pet grooming session so they come out looking fantastic.

Pet Grooming is Important

Title: Pet Grooming is Important

My dog Tyke is a Border Collie. Border Collies have a "double coat" consisting of an outer or "guard" coat and an undercoat. Although they should only be given a bath when needed, it's necessary to have them groomed regularly to keep their coat shiny, smooth and healthy, especially during their winter and summer shedding periods. And yes, as Tyke has two coats, I need two different rakes to groom him!

I like grooming Tyke, not only because spending that extra quality time together strengthens my bond with him, but also because I may discover developing health problems like a tumor sooner rather than later.

Regular grooming is alas often overlooked as an important and necessary aspect of pet ownership that should not be ignored.

You may decide that it's better to take your pet to a professional who is sure to do it right. A professional groomer will be sensitive to you and your pet's needs; they are interested in gaining you and your pet's trust. But because pet grooming is so important, it's vital that you teach your dog to tolerate it as soon as you take her home so the experience can remain safe and stress free for her.

On the other hand, you may want to start a grooming business yourself. Pet grooming is an alternative pet business opportunity that is widely popular today, as more and more pet owners spend a lot of money to pamper their pets. Dog grooming experience can be gained through apprenticeship, therefore it is wise to spend at least one year gaining experience from a well respected groomer. Anyone interested in becoming a pet groomer should do online research to find out the right steps to take.

Apparently, a new trend that is highly likely to make you successful is opting for door-to-door, mobile pet grooming. Mobile grooming will succeed anywhere pet grooming is needed: you can install all the equipment that you need inside a van, and you simply drive to people's homes. They don't need to spend the time or do the effort to drive back and forth, and you don't need to pay the rent for an office. A perfect win-win situation.

Rewarding though it is, catering to personable, caring people who desire this service, keep in mind that pet grooming is very physical work and requires patience and a strong desire to learn.

Always remember though, running a pet grooming business successfully is about building trust between you and the pet as well as its owner: that can only happen if you care about pets as much as you care about people.
