Being depressed is another way of saying that you feel miserable. For most of us feelings like this vanish after a little while. There are some people however who can’t shake their depression and it lingers for months on end. What then are the depression causes? There is no real answer but there are several possibilities. In this possibility the depression learning process comes from your environment. How you perceive your family environment conditions you to becoming depressed in the future. Another depression cause can be considered as thinking. This cause is one of the main reasons for depression causes. In this possibility you create an imaginary problem. To this problem you add other imaginary problems and increase the problem. By the time you have finished thinking about the very large and worrisome problem, it has become much worse than it really is. The worry of this imaginary problem has caused you to become depressed over nothing. In all of these possibilities it is the thinking process that provides the catalyst for all of the depression causes. Various aspects of the problems become intensified with all of these depression causes. So by brooding on the worst aspects of your life it becomes very easy to become depressed. Therefore if your life feels like it is becoming too much for you or if a problem in your life has caused you to become depressed for quite a while, the chances are that you will need to evaluate your life and find out what are the depression causes in your life. Hopefully by knowing what causes depression we have a chance to stop depression from ruling our lives.

Clinical depression goes by many names -- depression, "the blues," biological depression, major depression. But it all refers to the same thing: feeling sad and depressed for weeks or months at a time (not just a passing blue mood), accompanied by feelings of hopelessness, lack of energy, and taking little or no pleasure in things that gave you joy in the past. Psychiatrists estimate that one in four women and one in ten men can expect to develop depression during their lifetime; depression affects at least one in 50 children under 12 and one in 20 teenagers. Symptoms Generally, the symptoms of depression include: · Feeling sad, hopeless and despairing · A loss of interest and pleasure in normal activities · Loss of appetite or weight · Loss of sex drive · Sleeping problems, such as an inability to get to sleep or early waking Types of Depression Psychotic Depression: Sufferers of psychotic depression begin to hear and see imaginary things - - sounds, voices and visuals that do not exist. These are referred to as hallucinations, which are generally more common with someone suffering from schizophrenia. The hallucinations are not "positive" like they are with a manic depressive. The sufferer of psychotic depression imagines frightening and negative sounds and images. Melancholic Depression Is a more severe depression than non-melancholic depression and is primarily caused by biological factors. It is an uncommon type of depression, affecting only around 1-2% of the population and roughly the same number of males and females. It can occur on its own (unipolar) or as part of Bipolar Disorder. Major Depression An individual with major depression feels a profound and constant sense of hopelessness and despair. Major depression is manifested by a combination of symptoms that interfere with the ability to work, study, sleep, eat and enjoy once pleasurable activities. Such a disabling episode of depression may occur only once but more commonly occurs several times in a lifetime. Cyclothymic disorder Cyclothymic disorder is when a person has mild and alternating mood swings of elation and depression occurring over a long time period. Because the mood swings are mild, and the elation is often enjoyable, frequently people with cyclothymic disorder do not seek medical help. The periods of elation and depression can last for lengthy periods, such as a few months. Often, a person with cyclothymic disorder has a relative with bipolar disorder, or they may develop bipolar disorder themselves. Psychotic depression – A depressed mood which includes symptoms of psychosis. Psychosis involves seeing or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations), feeling everyone is against you (paranoia) and having delusions. Non-melancholic – in this case the depression is not melancholic, or, put simply, not primarily biological. Instead, it has to do with psychological causes, and is very often linked to stressful events in a person’s life, alone, or in conjunction with the individual’s personality style. Depression is often described as a psychological disease. There are several types of depression, ranging from mild to severe. It’s hard to identify factors that cause depression. However there have been many studies done to try and understand the underlying causes of depression to help prevent it. Moreover, more studies have been performed on what type of medical assistance helps to treat depression best. The most noticeable symptom of depression is feeling sad for a long period of time. This involves feeling sad for at least two weeks. However, with most depressed people, this symptom lasts for much longer. This symptom in itself brings on many other conditions; for example, feeling sad may trigger suicidal thoughts. Generally, two types of suicidal people have been identified: those who are serious about it and those who want attention. This is not to say one type is more severe than the other – both require attention and care by close relatives, friends and professionals. In the beginning, most people with depression are not serious about it, but suicidal thoughts are triggered by their long depression period. They may show this through reading many books and other materials on the subject of suicide. They may start talking about it more often in daily conversation. These are all signs that they are thinking of suicide and want some help. In fact, it’s very important to talk to them about it, even casually, to show them that you have interest in their lives. Contrast this with the most serious suicidal people – these people do not talk or mention their suicidal tendencies because they’d like to act on them and they want no one to ruin their plan. These people can be helped too. They require more attention, especially more medical and professional attention. Simply talking to them about suicide may not help. Depression has many other symptoms that vary from person to person. Some people may lose their appetite or gain more appetite. They may lose or gain weight unexpectedly. They may start forming different habits – like listening to different music or gaining new friends. Of course, this isn’t a sure sign of a depression, but when many of these elements are combined they may be warning signs. Depression may have different causes for different people. Some major reasons for depression have been identified, like social isolation, substance abuse, stress, a death in the family and disability. When more than one symptom occurs at the same time, the risk of depression is higher. When trying to help others with their depression, be very empathetic. They may need more attention and support, but they don’t need anyone telling them how to feel and that life is rosy. Everyone can escape depression given the right conditions.

Depression is worryingly common in adults. It can occur in three different levels: mild depression; moderate depression; and severe depression. There are many tell-tale signs of this disorder, and the more depressed a person is, the more of these signs will be present in their behaviour. Depression afflicts one in four women and one in 10 men at some point in their lives. Among its most common symptoms are persistent sadness, low energy, sleep and appetite disturbances, and inability to take pleasure in enjoyable activities.Depression is debilitating for the patient and agonizing for loved ones to watch. However, when this disorder is skillfully managed, treatment is successful in nearly 90 percent of patients. This is accompanied by such symptoms as change in sleep and appetite, loss of energy, loss of self-esteem, difficulty concentrating and preoccupation with death or suicide. In some cases depressed people become irrationally convinced that something errible is happening to them, such as poverty or fatal disease. The depressed person may withdraw from friends and family, and be unable to work. In younger children, depression may present as morbid preoccupation with death and dying. Children and teenagers sometimes experience bouts of helplessness, hopelessness, and despair that are diagnosed as major depression. Studies show that between 6 and 19% of the population will suffer from major depression at some time in their life. It appears to be a “biological” illness in that the tendency to develop this condition can run in families, that depression can occur for no apparent reason and when the person has experienced no significant changes in their life, and that the misery can resolve with medication treatment alone in some cases. Depression is a serious condition that can impact every area of your life. It can affect your social life, your family relationships, your career, and your sense of self-worth and purpose. here are several other important forms of depression. Adjustment Disorder with Depressed Mood involves a drop in mood in response to a specific stressful circumstance. Bipolar disorder involves low mood periods similar to Major Depression, but with periods of elevated or irritable mood as well. Depression can also occur as a biological reaction to certain physical illnesses (e.g. strokes affecting the left frontal cerebrum, hypothyroidism, pancreatic cancer) or to chemical substances (e.g. alcohol, methamphetamine, ß-blocking antihypertensive medications). While symptoms are less intense than in Major Depression, Dysthymic Disorder lasts for years. Depression in adolescents may be difficult to spot because sulkiness, irritability, antisocial behaviour, negativity and withdrawal often go hand in hand with growing up. Treatment of Adult Depression 1.Cognitive-behavioral therapy focuses on the causes of the depression and helps change negative thought patterns. 2.Family therapy as an adjunct to individual therapy can address patterns of communication 3.Creative expression through drama, art or music is often a positive outlet for the strong emotions of adolescents. 4.Medication for depression should be used with great caution, and only under careful supervision. 5.Group therapy is often very helpful for teens, because it breaks down the feelings of isolation that many adolescents experience 6.Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (called SSRIs), such as fluoxetine (Prozac). Title: Natural Treatments for Depression

Like millions of other people all over the world, I have suffered from depression for many years of my life. And like many people who suffer from depression, I didn’t really like the idea of taking powerful pharmaceutical drugs to treat it. So, I have always tried to find ways to help depression that don’t necessarily rely on using heavy duty drugs. When I was doing my research into my book “How You Can Be Smarter – Use Your Brain to Learn Faster, Remember Better, and Be More Creative” I found a lot of information about natural treatments that could help depression as well as help improve memory and thinking. One of the things I found very interesting is that if you live in Europe or Asia, and you happen to have depression, you are much more likely to get prescribed a herbal preparation by your doctor. However, if you live in North America, prescribing herbs or other natural products is about the last thing your doctor will do for you. Instead, a North American doctor is much more likely to prescribe antidepressants from a big pharmaceutical company. What I have written in this article is a really, really short overview of some of the many natural treatments that have been used for depression. If you happen to have a mild form of depression, then natural methods can work. If you have a serious depression, and that means a state of sadness or emptiness that goes on and on, and bleeds all the joy out of your life so that you feel like it is all empty and meaningless, then some professional treatment can be helpful. Is there anything you can get in a health food store that might help with depression? Yes, maybe, if your depression is in the mild to moderate range of severity. A more severe or long-term depression should be treated by a qualified professional. If you are already taking prescription anti-depressants, do not also take any natural remedies at the same time without first consulting your doctor! In some cases, there can be dangerous interactions. Just because something is natural does not mean it is always safe for everybody. St. John’s Wort One of the best known and most widely prescribed natural remedies for depression is St. John’s Wort. This herb has been used as a remedy for depression in Europe for decades. It is believed to now be the most commonly used anti-depressant in the world. Many people who take St. John’s Wort say they prefer the gentle lift this herb provides compared to the side effects of prescription anti-depressants. The exact method by which St. John’s Wort works is unknown. The main active ingredient is believed to be hypericin. Other factors in the plant may have an anti-depressant effect as well. A typical recommended dose is 900 milligrams per day, divided. Look for a product that is standardized to contain .3 percent hypericin. Some side effects with St. John’s Wort may be experienced. They include nausea and abdominal pain. Some people experience increased sensitivity to sunlight and there is some indication that taking it may lead to a higher incidence of cataracts. Not all studies of St. John’s Wort have shown positive results. Many researchers in Europe say that St. John’s Wort is effective, but at least one large recent American study found it to be ineffective as a treatment for depression. When buying St. John’s Wort, or any other herbal preparation, purchase only those brands that have a reputation for reliability. Some independent tests have confirmed that not all brands of St. John’s Wort offered for sale actually contain the ingredients being claimed on the package. If you are already taking a prescription anti-depressant, do not start taking St. John’s Wort without consulting your doctor first. It may not be compatible with your other medications. Don’t take St. John’s Wort if you have bipolar depression or if you are pregnant. SAM-e If you want to find something from the health food store to fight depression, you could ask for SAM-e, also known as s-adenosyl-methionine. SAM-e is a substance which our body can make using the amino acid L-methionine, and various other nutrients. It is believed that SAM-e can boost the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine in the brain, which may be able to improve mood. Research reports from Europe say SAM-e has the same rate of effectiveness as most prescription anti-depressants, about 70 percent, but that it works faster and has fewer side effects. Some studies have found positive improvements in depressed patients in as few as four days. SAM-e is better absorbed if you take it on an empty stomach between meals. A suggested dose is 400 milligrams per day. People who have bipolar depression should not take SAM-e. If you are already taking MAO inhibitor antidepressants, do not take SAM-e. SAM-e is not legally available in all countries. Amino Acid Therapy for Depression Not all psychiatrists prescribe pharmaceutical antidepressants. Some psychiatrists prefer to treat depression with natural supplements such as vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and amino acids. The amino acids which have been found most effective in treating depression are L-tyrosine, L-tryptophan and L-phenylalanine. For many decades, the amino acid L-tryptophan was widely used to successfully treat depression. However, in 1989 a contaminated batch of this substance resulted in several deaths, so L-trypophan was removed from the market. Even though the manufacturing process for L-tryptophan has been changed to prevent this problem, the ban on the sale of L-tryptophan in many countries persists. Today, a product related to L-Tryptophan, called 5-HTP is available in many health food stores. The 5-HTP is believed to have none of the problems that caused L-Tryptophan to be withdrawn from the shelves, and it appears to be effective in lifting depression. If you decide to use 5-HTP for depression, discuss it with your doctor. People who are taking MAO inhibitor drugs for depression should not be taking amino acid supplements. Very young and very old people should avoid amino acid supplementation. Other Natural Therapies to Consider In those countries where the population eats a lot of ocean fish, the rate of depression appears to be low. North Americans don’t eat very much ocean fish, and the rate of depression in North America is quite high. Many nutritionally oriented therapists believe there is a connection. Certain ocean fish such as tuna and salmon are very rich in Omega 3 fatty acids and other compounds that are beneficial to the heart and the brain. Eating more of these fish, or getting fish oil capsules from the health food store may be useful in treating some instances of depression. However, there is a lot of controversy over whether these fish are safe to eat, since many large ocean fish are now contaminated with mercury poisoning. Does the benefit of the fish oil outweigh the possible danger of the mercury? Researchers don’t agree about this at this time. But you can try to include a lot more fish like salmon and tuna in your diet to see if it boosts your mood. Folic Acid Folic acid is one of the most important nutrients in the body, but sadly, a lack of folic acid is one of the most common deficiencies in the world. Low levels of folic acid are associated with heart problems, memory problems, and depression. If you suffer from depression, consider taking at least 400 mcg. per day in a supplement. Final Thoughts This has been a brief rundown of natural products you might find at the health food store that can help with depression. But there are at least two more ideas I want to mention in closing that have been shown to be very beneficial to cases of depression. Remember that before antidepressants were invented, people mostly relied on talk therapy to try get better. This can still work really well, if you have a good therapist, and if paying for therapy isn’t a problem for you. Not all types of psychotherapy work for depression. Cognitive therapy teaches the patient new, more realistic ways of thinking. Cognitive therapy has a record of curing depression that appears to be just as the rate of cure of most antidepressants. Also remember that before therapists were invented, people talked over their problems with trusted friends, family members and spiritual advisors. So, if good therapists aren’t easily available where you live, you can try look for other people to talk to that might help. And now, one here is one final cure for some cases of depression that is easily available to most of us – exercise. In some studies, regular physical exercise was shown to relieve depression just as effectively as medications! So, consider incorporating some of these ideas into your life if you are feeling a bit depressed. Serious depression may need much more intervention.

Title: The Different Types Of Depression

There are many different types of depression. Depression can take many forms, and so many healthcare professionals use a number of different terms when referring to depression. Seasonal affective disorder, clinical depression, and bipolar depression are all commonly diagnosed types of depression. What really causes a lot of confusion when someone is diagnosed with depression is that it can very often overlap with another illness. Conditions such as substance abuse or an eating disorder may be confused with depression, and can make any form of depression rather hard to diagnose. The following are some very common forms of depression. You will hear the term major depression when you are experiencing one of the depressive disorders that are severe enough to require treatment. For example, say you are very active at your local gym but have experienced some type of severe emotional trauma and start to avoid the gym at all costs. It is very likely that you could be experiencing a bout with major depression. Another one of the major types of depression is bipolar depression (also known as manic depressive illness). Bipolar depression is commonly recognized as someone experiencing being overly happy, then suddenly becoming horribly depressed. Many doctors believe that bipolar depression is an imbalance in the brain that can often be successfully treated with medications. One of the major types of depression that women are known to suffer from is postpartum depression. Healthcare professionals have determined that many women suffering from postpartum depression have already suffered from some form of depression previously. Most women that go through giving birth feel badly the first few days afterward. However, those that are not able to snap out of the depressive feelings can experience them for months, if not years, if not properly treated. Of the many types of depression, a common subtype of depression is seasonal affective disorder. This form of depression seems to be tied to the way people react to the amount of sunlight that is available to them each day. Light therapy by use of special lamps is a common treatment for those suffering from seasonal affective disorder. A very serious form of the many types of depression is psychotic depression. Those that suffer from psychotic depression very often hear voices in their head in addition to having visual delusions. Individuals that are suffering from this need to have someone help them seek treatment as soon as possible. Most sufferers are not able to think rationally, and therefore are likely to hurt themselves or others. Psychotic depression strikes about 15% of individuals suffering from major depression. People that seem to be suffering constantly from a mild form of depression are likely to be suffering from dysthymia. People that are suffering from dysthymia can also be hit with a bout of major depression, the more severe form of depression that results in necessary close medical monitoring and aggressive treatment. Another of the many types of depression that are very commonly suffered by women is atypical depression. This form of depression is commonly marked by experiencing things like panic attacks, overeating, and sleeping disturbances. Someone with atypical depression will feel depressed for a period of time, feel better, and then feel worse again. Atypical depression is very common in a person's younger years, and if gone untreated will follow them into adulthood. No matter which one of the many types of depression you might be suffering from, knowing the difference between them is the best way to get the best possible treatment. Once you know which is the best course of treatment you will know the best way to battle whichever of the many different types of depression that you might be suffering from.

Title: What Is The Cause Of Depression?

Many people simply want to know what the cause of depression is. If you are dealing with depression, you probably would also like to know what causes it, too. There are many different reasons why someone may have bouts of depression. It is impossible to pinpoint one specific reason and label it the cause of depression. Biological vulnerability is one cause of depression. Some depressions can run in families. For instance, bipolar depression and major depression seems to run in families. Studies have been done which show that individuals who have bipolar disorder in each generation of their family have a different genetic makeup than individuals who do not suffer from bipolar depression. However, it is important to note that not every person that has the genetic makeup that would make them vulnerable to bipolar depression will develop it. However, there are people who develop depression who have no family history of the depression. So, suffice it to say that while biological factors can be one cause of depression, it is not the only thing that could be the cause of depression. People who are vulnerable to depression seem to have a variety of psychological factors involved. Individuals who have a low self-esteem, who are pessimistic and who suffer from anxiety and stress seem to be more prone to having bouts of depression. A person’s environment can also have much to do with the cause of depression. If an individual grows up in a home where discouragement is the norm and pessimism reigns, the person may be vulnerable to depression. It should be noted that life can be the cause of depression. If you have experienced the death of a loved one, gone through a chronic illness, have work problems, a family crisis or problems with your finances, you may be vulnerable to becoming depressed. All of these scenarios can trigger depression, especially for someone who may have biological or psychological factors already present. Depression is nothing to be ashamed of. Millions of people are diagnosed with depression each year. The best thing you can do if you are showing signs of depression is to be honest with yourself. If you think you are dealing with depression, go to your doctor. Many times taking an anti depression medication for a set period of time can kick the depression to the curb. If you do not seek out treatment for your depression, it could become worse. Depression can truly debilitate a person if left untreated. No one can “snap out” of major depression. Admitting a problem with depression is not a sign of weakness. If anything, it is a sign of strength. If you know someone and he or he is showing signs of depression, it is a good idea to talk to him or her about it. Many times people get into a slump when they are depressed and they need someone to take them by the hand so they can seek help. If a person is suffering from major depression, setting up a doctor’s appointment may seem like a monumental task. Offer to do it for your loved one. Accompany your loved one to the doctor if it would make him or her feel better. Never put down someone who is suffering from depression or tell them to “get over it.” This kind of attitude can plunge a person into a more intense depression. If someone you love is showing signs of suicide, get help for him or her immediately. Don’t worry about the repercussions or if your loved one will be angry with you. The most important thing is that your loved one gets help.

Depression is not a passing feeling of unhappiness, natural expected feelings of sadness from a difficult or painful event. It is a very real and sometimes even dangerous mental illness. Depression most often presents itself as feelings of sadness, but sadness is not necessarily depression.
Depression sufferers often have feelings of complete despair, hopelessness and a lack of purpose in life and enthusiasm for the world around them.
Depression may be one part of another condition or it may be its own concern apart from any other illnesses. It is a symptom of bipolar disorder, but not the entire disorder, depression is a very large part of manic depression and other associated illnesses but not the whole of manic depression.
Although depression may have a trigger in many cases, it is wrong to assume that some event may cause it.
Certainly stress and unfortunate life events may cause depression. It may present itself after an inability to achieve an individual's goal or desires, but should not be confused with natural feelings of disappointment or sadness.
Depression may strike an individual who experiences hormonal imbalance, which explains why women who face menopause are often a statistic of depression studies. Scientific research has also found a link to a gene fault that controls serotonin levels to the brain.
Some depression sufferers have also been recorded to be affected by weather conditions. Further investigation has found a vitamin deficiency in these sufferers. Much the same as statistics reveal depression is common in alcoholics due to a vitamin B1 deficiency.
Certainly depression sufferers feel unhappy most of the time, but someone who may not appear unhappy, or an individual who may rarely experience unhappiness may suffer from depression. As with many illnesses not all signs and symptoms have to be evident for the condition to be present.
Below are some of the signs and symptoms of depression. Again I will stress that signs and symptoms may not be obvious or evident for each individual.
. Unhappiness
. Lethargy in life, loss of interest in sex and/or other life joys
. Difficulty with decision making
. Feelings of drowsiness
. Restlessness, anxiety, and agitation
. Eating problems, either a loss of appetite, or excessive binge eating
. Feelings of inadequacy and/or a lack of self confidence
. Suicidal or self destructive thoughts
Please remember that not all depression sufferers entertain thoughts of suicide either by expression or in their own private thoughts. In fact, depression sufferers are not helped with the natural assumption from others that they must be suicidal. This is a serious sign and unfortunately, very common among sufferers and must be addressed, but this is not the 'be all' of the condition of depression.
Depression may also present with physical signs and symptoms, these include: headaches, joint aches and pains, dizziness, cramps or belly aches.
The good news is that depression help is available and can start right away by taking back control. A depression sufferer must take a deep breath and be bold in taking a step forward. A few of the things you may do for depression help is to establish a healthy eating plan, implement a natural sleeping pattern and change 'habits', certainly a change in routine is good for us all from time to time, on the occasions our routines, and routine thought patterns become stagnant or even harmful we may make a conscious effort to turn them into positive routines and thought patterns.
A depression sufferer should consciously praise themselves and establish a positive affirmation in reflection of their good qualities.
Most important, depression help must consist of self confrontation and talking to someone. Talk is essential for recovery, you are not alone. Most depression sufferers feel quite alone in their pain, actively seeking someone to share your concerns with does help depression.
While it is an important process towards wellness to take a proactive step towards recovery and practice self help I must recommend that you should seek professional advice if you experience the signs and symptoms of depression. Do not be fooled into the belief that depression is all in your head. Often, depression may be a symptom of another illness or an undiagnosed condition.
Depression help means discussing your concerns with a qualified practitioner. If perhaps you have been unfortunate enough to come across a GP who does not understand depression and who may not evaluate your condition to your satisfaction seek a second opinion. Although the medical world has come a long way in the past decade in the understanding of depression some doctors may not be quite up to date. Professional depression help is available; depression is a real condition and must not be ignored.

I see the repair of the wound or the defense of the body against disease as elaborate processes that cannot be understood without reference to energetics. These vital mechanisms operate automatically, usually without our conscious awareness. Defending the body against disease and rapid healing of injuries are obviously key issues in anti-aging.
There are two requirements for the body to respond appropriately to damage or disease. Tissues must be able to conduct injury potentials and chemical messages from a site of injury, and tissues must allow the migration of cells to the site of the injury. Injury potentials are examples of subtle but measurable electrical communications that regulate the countless processes involved in sustaining life. The migrating cells are of two basic types. Cells of the immune system, such as neutrophils and leukocytes, are needed to destroy bacteria and clean up debris from tissue damage. Cells such as fibroblasts and osteoblasts are needed to repair and replace damaged tissues.
If communication processes or cell migrations are compromised, an injury will heal slowly. And, if the injury is slow to heal, a low level chronic inflammation may set in. Obviously tissues that are even modestly inflamed or bruised or inflexible are not as effective at these vital processes as they could be.
Inflammation is a key part of the wound repair process, and is fundamentally an energetic phenomenon. The reason for this is that the key inflammatory molecules are free radicals, which are molecules that have an unpaired electron. Free radicals and other molecules such as histamines cause the swelling, heat, redness, tenderness, pain and loss of range of motion produced by inflammation.
Low levels of chronic inflammation arise because free radicals can leak from a site of injury to nearby tissues and start to break down healthy cells. This causes more signals to go out to the immune system, attracting more immune cells, which secrete more free radicals. This vicious cycle gives rise to "silent inflammation" and has been identified as the basic cause of many different diseases and disorders. This includes diseases that were not previously considered inflammatory.
