The main difference between glass and crystal is the lead content. Both glass and crystal are composed of sodium, but crystal also has silicone and metallic oxides added to give it a lead content of at least 10 to 24%. The addition of these materials makes the crystal heavier and changes the light refraction index of the item. The result is a brighter and cleaner piece. Since lead crystal is not as brittle as standard glass, craftsmen can make deeper and more complicated cuts in the crystal.

For glass to be called “lead crystal,” the glass must meet three criteria defined by rigorous rates and percentages.

There are four types of lead crystal:

Full Lead Crystal which has 30% or higher lead content, a density rating of 3.00 and a refractory index of 1.545 or greater (how crystal refracts light)

Lead Crystal which has a 24% lead content or higher, a density of 2.45 and a refractory index of 1.545 or higher refractory index.

Crystal glass also referred to as Crystalline which has only 10% lead content, a 2.45 density and a refractory index of 1.520

Crystal glass also referred as to crystalline (resonant glass in French) which has a 10% lead content, a density rating of 2.40 and a low to zero refractory index.

There are many factors that affect the price of crystal beside the lead content. Obviously the higher the lead content the higher the base cost of the product. The method of producing the final figurine also affects the price. Figurines can be made by pouring the glass into a mold, creating a figurine by assembling and gluing various shaped crystals or cutting a design from a solid block of glass. Each method is progressively more expensive because of the labor involved.

Another factor affecting the price is the intricacy of the crystal figurine design, regardless of the production method. Each method will usually involve some cutting, grinding, gluing and polishing.

There are a number of companies, mostly Chinese, that produce crystalline figurines. You can purchase these figurines at a very reasonable price if you are on a tight budget. Just keep in mind that you are not purchasing a "lead crystal" product. Also be aware that there are unscrupulous companies that claim that their figurines are lead crystal when they are really crystalline. It is difficult for the untrained eye to tell the difference between the two. You certainly don’t want to buy a crystalline figurine for a lead crystal price.

You can protect yourself by purchasing from reliable merchants in your local area or on the internet. Your dealer can tell you the lead content of any crystal figurine you want to purchase. They are carefully instructed by the major figurine manufacturers in all aspects of their products. The major manufacturers also include a Certificate of Authenticity with every crystal figurine. The certificate is your additional assurance of the quality level of the product.

Proper care of crystal is a part of the collecting and ownership process. Bear in mind that crystal is a form of glass and is consequentially fragile. Even solid looking crystal figurines are subject to breakage. Keep the following tips in mind and you will maintain the beauty, quality and value of your crystal.

1. When moving or cleaning a crystal item, handle only one piece at a time. This is the time when most damage occurs so be careful.

2. Glassware, stemware and crystal figurine collectibles should be stored in an enclosed cabinet to avoid the collection of dust.

3. Crystal items used for Home Décor such as crystal flower vases, ashtrays, figurines, paperweights, etc. can be cleaned free of dust with a Blow Dryer set on cool, or with a lint free cloth. Finger marks can be removed with a light spray of glass cleaner and a lint free cloth. Never use paper towels to clean crystal. The wood fibers in paper will create tiny scratches on the surface.

4. Exercise great care when washing crystal. The kitchen sink is the biggest hazard zone for crystal breakage. Crystal is subject to breaking in extreme heat. Wash in warm water only. If the water is too hot for your hands, it is too hot for the crystal. To avoid spotting, add a quarter cup of ammonia or a liquid dishwasher rinse agent with the detergent. Rinse in clean warm water and air dry on a rack or kitchen towel.

5. Take care when washing glassware. Use a soft fiber bottle brush to clean the inside of narrow glasses. For larger glasses, clean the inside with a dish cloth using only two fingers. Never put your whole hand in the glass to clean or dry the crystal. The pressure on the side of the glass will cause it to break and you risk getting a nasty cut.

6. Here are some additional safety measures you can take. Do not put five or six glasses in the sink at one time. When you reach in the water for another glass you create a mini-wave of water pressure. This pressure can push one glass into another glass or one glass into the side of the sink resulting in breakage. Washing one at a time is the better way. Another good idea is to place a rubber mat in the bottom of the sink in case a glass slips out of your hand. The next hazard is the spigot. Push it out of the wash area until you are ready to rinse.

Follow these simple tips and you will keep your crystal looking as good as new with all its original sparkle and brilliance. Use care in handling crystal and it will last a lifetime.

Microsoft Dynamics GP is successor of Great Plains Software Dynamics and eEnterprise ERP application, and Crystal Reports was always the reporting tool of the choice for Dynamics. Historically GP Dynamics was available on Pervasive SQL and Ctree platform, where Crystal Reports were limited, due to the limitation to Pervasive and Faircom ODBC drivers. The last version, available on Pervasive/Ctree was Microsoft Great Plains 7.5 and since version 8.0 GP Dynamics is available on Microsoft SQL Server only, and as you can expect, SQL Server opens all the possible horizons for reports development. Current Version of GP as of November 2007 is 10.0. In this small article we will open “philosophical” principles of Crystal Reports design for Microsoft Dynamics GP:

1. Crystal Reports is “just” a reporting tool, not and magic “all-the-problems-solver”. This means that you should not overestimate the power of report wizards, but instead design either SQL view or SQL stored procedure to accept parameters and return records set to your Crystal Report. Then all you need to do in CR is to group records, sort them, and of course apply styles and other “cosmetics”. We are placing this message in the first bullet, because we saw a lot of report design failures, where designer tried to do very complex GP tables links within CR and then apply further complex restrictions, and ended up with lines duplication, and other annoying problems, which in fact pile up if you try to fix them with similar patches and at the end of the way, report was abandoned

2. SQL View vs. Stored Procedure. Of course SP looks more elegant as it accepts parameters, which are translated to CR parameters, however SP is also more powerful than the view due to the ability to include temporarily tables and intermediate calculations (based on temporary tables). Temporary tables allow you to go beyond the standard techniques of grouping in SQL Select statement – this should be the real solution, which will eliminate records duplications, described in #1. If you plan to invest your time in CR practicing for GP, you should make several practical lessons where you base GP Crystal Reports on SQL view and stored procedure

3. Other reporting tools for GP. If you are CR developer, it is natural, that you try to apply Crystal Report in all the situations, however you should be aware that GP has very powerful pre-designed tools. If you need to create financial statements: Balance Sheet, P&L, Cash Flow – you should consider FRx report designer first, FRx links to GP General Ledger and so, if more efficient than CR in Financial Reporting. GP ReportWriter. This reporting tool gets the advantages of GP report launching screens, such as SOP Invoice form, from where you can print specific invoice – so called modified reports allow you to place your company logo on Invoice form. Other features of FRx and RW are outside of the scope, please check our publications on these products

4. GP Dexterity Reporting. Dexterity is IDE and programming language of GP. Dex allows you to customize GP forms and reports plus create new ones. In order to explore Dex option, we recommend you to contact GP Dexterity developer, who should help you in the selection

5. Calling CR from GP interface. You can use several techniques. First one is traditional – use VBA/Modifier (you will need customization site enabler license for GP), from VBA scripts you can call CR engine. Second technique is Dexterity, where you call Crystal Reports engine from your custom Dexterity sanscript code. You can also consider SDK for Visual Studio developer, allowing you to extend GP forms and of course call CR from your .Net extension application
