Everyone cries, whether they are adults, children, male or female. People cry when they are happy, sad, angry, hurt, scared, proud or embarrassed. Children also cry when they are tired, dissatisfied, sick, hungry or just plain bored.

Sometimes children use crying as a means of getting their own way. Coddling children when they are old enough to know how to manipulate a situation by crying sends the message that turning on the tears is an affective way to get what they want.

The best way to get children to stop crying is by distracting them. If they forget why they are crying in the first place, they have no reason to continue crying. You might compare this to adults by thinking of something that makes you upset or worried. If you keep thinking about it, your mood will not improve; but by distracting yourself and thinking about or doing something else, you will forget that you are worried and be able to move on.

Once you have established that nothing is truly wrong with the child, try to distract them by asking questions like what they had for breakfast or what their favorite TV show is. If you continue to talk to them and ask them questions, they will be concentrating on your conversation and not whatever led them to start crying. By the time they realize that they have stopped crying, it will be too late to start up again.

Another way to distract children from crying is to get them to move around or perform tasks that they have to think about and concentrate on. Turn the situation around and ask if they can help you instead of you helping them. Whatever way you choose, distracting the child will soon turn off the water works and get them back to their previous activity.

If you continue to practice these strategies when your children cry they will eventually no longer be necessary. Not giving in to your kids because they are crying will show them that they can not use crying as an easy way out.

If your children cry when they are punished or on a time out, ignoring their tears is the only way they will learn a lesson. If they are on a time out and you are talking to them or trying to comfort them, you are sending the message that misbehaving equals attention from mom or dad. Ignoring them will solidify the line between what behavior merits a reward and what behavior deserves punishment.

While crying to express emotion is a part of life, it is important for your children to know that it is not a way to get what they want. The real world will not coddle them the way mom and dad do, so though it may seem like a harsh lesson at times, it is an important one for every parent to enforce.

Surviving Colic

Tammy Pinarbasi 2006-03-09
Title: Surviving Colic
Colic is basically uncontrollable crying in a healthy baby. It can come as early as two weeks and last as long as three months. Typically they will cry for hours at a time and may do this a few times a week. If your baby is crying like this and appears ill of course seek medical attention. If you think your baby has colic but are worried or not sure don’t hesitate to seek a diagnosis. Crying is the only way a baby has to communicate and the crying doesn’t always mean colic. If your child is hungry or tired this can definitely produce a crying baby. Check to see if your baby is comfortable. Take into consideration your baby’s personality some babies just like to be held. If all else fails there is a chance it is colic. I will say it again if you’re concerned seek professional advice. Colic is stressful on you and baby but thankfully it does not last forever. Dealing with a colicky baby can be a true test on your physical stamina and emotional stability. I was lucky enough to endure it twice. At times I felt like I was going to begin crying uncontrollably my self.

There is no medically proven treatment to cure colic but there are things that can be done to treat the symptoms of colic and to help console your child. No two babies are the same and it may take trying several things before you find what comforts your baby. Sometimes infants with colic will experience gas symptoms which can cause tummy pain. Some physicians will recommend using infant gas drops. They are non prescription and can be purchased over the counter. A common brand is Mylicon yet many major retailers or drug stores will have a store brand that is more affordable. I used it with both of my colicky babies and did see some benefit. But keep in mind it only helps the gas symptoms your child still may keep right on crying. Before giving your baby any kind of medicine you should consult their physician first for proper dosing instructions. While there is no proven cause for colic some suggest that for bottle-fed babies the formula can be the cause. Your physician may suggest changing formulas. Some infants exhibit a sensitivity to the proteins in cows? milk similar to a food allergy. Sometimes the physician will replace the baby’s formula with a soy formula or a hypo allergenic formula. Although there is nothing proved that soy formula helps with colic I did use it with my first colicky baby and I did not see much improvement but that is not to say it won’t help your baby. I used the hypo allergenic formula for my second colicky baby and it worked wonders. Within days I noticed a dramatic change in the crying, he had less gas and fewer bowel movements. He has done so well with this particular formula we still use it. The down side to the hypo allergenic formula is they are quite costly. For me it was well worth the price. Keep in mind you should never change your baby’s formula unless under the direction of the doctor.

Aside from the medical interventions here are some things you can do as a parent to try and comfort your little one.

· burp them often during feedings

· wrap them snugly in a blanket

· make use of a swing

· a relaxing bath if they enjoy bath time

· a car or stroller ride

· vibration or sound from washer or dryer

· rocking them

· pacifiers

These are just a few suggestions it may take several tries to find something that works for your baby so be patient and don’t give up.

Besides the stress colic puts on a baby it can be just as bad for the parents. Frustration can set in but remember your baby can sense these feelings and in return could make the crying worse. Don’t take the crying personally. The crying is not the result of something your doing. During this time you need to take breaks. Mom and dad can switch off taking care of the baby. Utilize friends and family. Believe me it helps. They were a life saver for me. You need to take time away and enjoy a bit of quiet time. Remember this will not last forever and before long you will have a bright-eyed smiling baby on your hands.

Taking Your Kids On A Road Trip

2007-11-20
Title: Taking Your Kids On A Road Trip
Taking your kids on a long car ride may be inevitable in many situations and it will likely produce some whining and crying. You can, however, take a few precautionary measures to avoid some major problems and help your kids pass the time in the car without too much trouble. Planning ahead and bringing along enough critical supplies is the best way to start planning on taking your kids on a road trip.

Pack the Right Stuff

You'll want to make sure that you've packed the right stuff for your trip, first and foremost. Give each child a special backpack or bag that contains items that they can use for the trip and some food for the voyage. Crayons, books, activity sets, sticker books, handheld games, and other goodies can be in each child's bag. This allows your children to pull out activities as they want and entertain themselves. These goodie bags are especially ideal if you are the lone driver during the road trip.

Pace the Journey

Make sure that you allow enough time for rest stops along the way. Kids will need to use the restroom and will need to stretch their legs and get some fresh air. You probably will need a bit of a break from driving, too, so set a pattern that you can follow throughout the trip in terms of rest stops. Take a break every two hours or so and stick to a good break schedule. This will help your kids anticipate the times of the stops.

Allow Time for Play

Along with the rest stops, try to stop in at a fun restaurant along the way that has playrooms or a playground facility. Many fast food restaurants can provide kids with entertaining playroom facilities that will help your kids get a break from the monotony of the road. You'll like it too, as you'll be able to relax with a cup of coffee and watch your kids play before you carry on with the car trip.

Snack It Up

Snacks are important, so make sure that you bring plenty of snack options that are healthy and exciting for your kids. Pack some crackers and some cheese or some fruit snacks and let your kids tear into them at their leisure. Including the snacks in the goodie bags is a good idea, but keep some more up front with you in case your kids get overly eager and finish their snacks before you've left your driveway. You can also choose to distribute snacks yourself, but this can get tricky if you are the one driving.

Don't Rush

The most critical thing about taking a road trip with kids is to not rush the trip. You don't want to set unreasonable goals and try to make it to your destination as quickly as possible, as this can lead to cranky children and unsafe driving habits. Instead, give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination and allow for all sorts of stops along the way. Too often, we forget to enjoy the journey of a good road trip and, instead, charge ahead to our destination. Take your time, relax and enjoy the time with your children.

Crying Baby - Will A Warm Cuddle Comfort My Crying Baby

Maisy Day 2007-07-11
Title: Crying Baby - Will A Warm Cuddle Comfort My Crying Baby

Crying babies will normally always have a reason why they bawl, scream, yell or kick up a fuss. Getting to the root of the problem of why we have a crying baby in the first place will definitely help mummy and daddy stem the flow of tears.

A baby's cry can be very distressing at times for the parents, but, hey hold up mum and dad, this is the only way baby can communicate; This is baby`s way of letting his or her carers know that they are not happy and that they need tending too.

Expect new born babies to cry in the early weeks regardless of how attentive mummy and daddy is. A baby`s crying outbursts can rise from being hungry, needing their bottoms changed or more importantly winding.

Being the parent - you will know your own baby traits better than anyone else so if the infant is upset more than usual then this could mean that the child is unwell. Aside crying other signs to look for if the baby is sick are - not feeding well, trouble with breathing, high fever and vomiting - all of these symptoms should be checked over with your doctor.

It is good idea to try and test new things that can help the situation or ease the problem of a crying baby. For instance the child may not be satisfied with the baby formula - so you could try introducing him/her or in some cases them to a new feed formula. If you are counting the pennies why not collect free baby samples of baby milk and much more from many of the free baby products being offered online for free. More about this below

If you want to comfort your baby then do so because - you cannot spoil your little one by responding to his or her SOS call. Not every crying baby can be comforted there and then - but you still need to do what is necessary to ease their discomfort.

A warm cuddle will always be warmly welcomed by a discontented baby.

Remember to first rule out the cause to why you think you have a crying baby. Could it be that the baby is hungry, does the baby need changing. Is their bowel movement or non bowel movement the cause of their squealing? Make sure the infant is not over heated (too hot or cold can be a reason for crying). When it is time for baby`s nap - a quiet darkened room is favoured by sleeping nippers. However in saying that some babies sleep better with activity going on in the background? For example mummy and daddy's favourite tune playing on the radio or when their brothers and sisters are having a squabble.

If your crying baby is unsettled after a feed then it is a possibility that they may need burping (winding). Never put baby down without getting his or her wind up because this can cause colic. Overtired babies are unhappy babies so try to set a pattern that works well for both you and the baby to have a snooze. No matter the circumstances regarding your crying baby - he or she will always feel protected and safe in the comfort zone i.e. mummy's arms.

Crying Baby - Reasons

Raymond McNally 2007-09-24
Title: Crying Baby - Reasons

Introduction:

Crying is a normal event in the lives of all babies. When a baby comes out of the woomb the first thing to do is crying.By the first cry he will take some air in to the lungs for the first time in their life. After delivery if the baby doesnot cry then it should be initiated by slightly pinching or gently strocking the feet. From this it is clear that the healthy baby should cry and it is a normal physiological event ,still some times it can upset the mother or family members.

We all know that a baby can't tell his needs or troubles in words. The only way for him to communicate with others is by crying.Babies show some other signs like feet kicking, hand waving and head turning ect.But the best way to take the attention of others is by crying.

Excessive crying may not have a firm definition because the crying habit changes from baby to baby and some babies can be calmed easily but some are difficult to sooth. If crying is distressing for the mother and home nurse it can be called excessive. Many a times baby become quiet by giving breast milk or by carrying with a gentle rocking.Sudden onset of excessive crying means baby is distressed and needs attention. The causes of crying extends from simple reasons to life threatening conditions.Hence crying of a baby should not be ignored.

Most of the time it is difficult to find the cause of the cry .Common causes are discussed here for awareness.

Common reasons for crying:

1,Hunger:--

A hungry baby will cry till he gets the milk. Here the old saying comes true'crying baby gets the milk'.

2,Wetting:--

Urination and defecation causes some discomfort and results in crying till his parts are cleaned and made dry .

3,Company:--

Majority of the kids need somebody near. If they feel lonely they cry. When their favourite doll slips away from the grip they cry for help.

4,Tired:--

When the baby is tired after a journey and unable to sleep just cry simply. They feel tired in uncomfortable sourroundings and due to unhealthy climate.

5,Heat & cold:--

If they feel too hot or too cold they become restless and cry. Child is comfortable in a room with good ventilation.

6,Tight cloathing:--

Tight cloaths especially during warm climate is intolerable for kids.Tight elastic of the the dress can also produce soreness in the hip region.

7,Dark room:--

When the baby wakes up from sleep he needs some dim light. If there is darkness he will disturb the sleep of parents by crying.Ofcourse he will be irritated by strong light resulting in cry.

8,Mosquito:--

Yes,these creatures disturb the sleep by their blood sucking and make the baby to cry.

9,Nasal blocking:--

Child may not be able to sleep when there is a cold and go on crying till the passage is open.

10, Phlegm in throat:--

This also causes difficult breathing resulting in cry.Often a typical sound can be heard with each breath.

11,General aching:--

Generalised body ache with restlessness is seen in flu and prodromal stages of some infectious diseases can result in continuous cry.

12,Habitual cry:---Some babies cry without any real cause ending the parents in agony. Many a times doctor is called for help.

13,Nappy rash:-- If a tight and wet nappy is kept for a long time results in this conditon. Rash can also be due to some allergic reaction to the elastic material of the nappy. When the rash appears it causes soreness and baby become sleepless and cry. All other skin lesions like eczema, ecthyma ,candidiasis ect also causes same problems.

14,Earache:--

Ear infection is common in wet climate. The infection may spread from the throat.Ear infection can result in rupture of ear drum causing discharge of pus.Eareache usually becomes worse at night when lying down.Child will become restless with cry and may not allow you to touch the ear. Some children with earache rub the affected ear frequently.

15,Colic:--

When the baby cry continuously most of us diagnose it as colic. This roblem is still a topic for debate because exact cause for colic is not known and diagnosis is also difficult to confirm.Colic may be associated with rumbling and distention of abdomen.Child often feels better when lying on abdomen. Some children may not allow you to touch the abdomen. If the child cries continuously doctors help is needed.

16,Infections:--

All infections causes some kind of pain or irritation resulting in cry.Infection may be anywhere in the body.Usually it is associated with fever, redness and swelling.

17,Reactions to certain food:--

It is said that one man's food is another man's poison. Some food articles can produce some allergic reactions.Allergy is manifested in the form of redness, breathlessness, gastric symptons and continuous cry.

18,Hard stools:--

Constipated babies with hard stools may cry when they get the urge for stool. Some children hesitate to pass stool because of pain .

19,Gastro esophagial reflex:--

Here baby cries with spilling of food after feeding. If this continues it may be due to gastroesophageal reflex. This is due to failure of the lower part of esophagus to close after food causing regurgitation from the stomach. It is difficult to diagnose this condition and can be confirmed by giving antireflex medicines.

20, Dentition:--

During dentition child becomes restless with crying. Often associated with gastric troubles and diarrhoea.

Some rare reasons -----------------

1,Bowel obstruction:--

Bowel obstruction is associated with severe pain and vomiting. Abdomen is distended with rumbling sound. Baby is constipated with absence of flatus.

2,Septicemia:--

Invasion of pathogenic micro organisms in to the blood is called septicemia. Fever is associated with this condition.

3,Torsion of testes in male kids:--

When a male baby cries continuously his scrotum should be examined. Torsion of the testes produce severe pain which will be worse by touching the affected testes. When the testes is pressed upwards pain is releived. If this is not treated properly it can damage the affected testes due to lack of blood supply.

4,Meningitis:--

Initially there may not be fever, hence crying baby with alternate vacant stare and irritability should not be ignored. Fontanel is bulging. Neck rigidity and seizures may appear later.

5,Retention of urine:--

Children with retention of urine will have agonising pain making them restless.

7,Major injuries:--

Major injury to any parts of the body causes pain. Occasionally children will fall while arrying and results in head injury. Head injury is associated with reflex vomiting and convulsions.

Crying Is A Healing Activity

Title: Crying Is A Healing Activity

More or less everywhere in the world, children are taught to refrain from crying. I remember incidents from my own early childhood. If I fell down and then cried , my family members would distract me from crying. They would say ‘see you have killed an ant'. In my innocence, I would believe what I was told and would start looking for the little creature. Of course, I could never find one. But I was distracted from crying and the activity would stop spontaneously.

In real world of grown-ups this is what we learn to do. We distract ourselves from crying over the losses that we undergo in our lives. We are told it is not good for us to cry, because ‘things cannot be undone'. Little do we realise that crying is a healing activity and it helps us move on in life.

It is a myth that crying over a loss continues forever and impedes our progress. Converse is true. Not crying over losses and deaths creates a ‘burden' in the body that we are not consciously aware of. This burden is only experienced when it is allowed to let go. As long as one is holding on to the burden, one does not realise that it is being carried. We are so used to carry it anyway.

Our nervous system goes into stress mode when our body perceives any threat. At that time the process of crying is suspended. It is only when a person starts to relax that the crying activity occurs. Physiologically, the parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for relaxation. Crying or shedding tears, is a parasympathetic activity. So people who are stressed out do not cry. But they are not happy either.

When someone cries over a loss, it means the nervous system is getting ‘comfortable' or is reaching a stage of ‘accepting' the loss. This causes a balance between the sympathetic (stress producing) and the parasympathetic (relaxation producing) parts of the nervous system. The crying that involves grief almost ALWAYS ends.

Sometimes even grown up adults can cry to seek attention. This kind of crying is usually done in a dramatic manner, is inconsistent with any loss and does not end at any stage, till the dramatist wants to stop it. In such a case, crying is not a healing activity but it is an attention seeking one.
