Are you wearing your oxygen mask when you clean your yard and house? If not, you might want to consider switching to green products for your house and yard sanitation needs.

If you use degreasers, stain removers and standard detergents to clean your clothes, dishes and bathroom, you've made your home into a small chemical plant! And using pesticides on your lawn and garden can harm the environment as much as they help your plants and grass. These chemicals contaminate groundwater and our lakes and streams. And if you breathe in or, worse, ingest some of these chemicals, you can get sick months or years later and not realize that you're ill because you came in contact with these hazards.

Phosphates in laundry detergent alone can kill fish, wildlife and plants in rivers and streams over weeks or months after they've been washed away. If you drive or walk by large masses of algae in ponds or streams, chances are pretty decent they've been caused by pollutants like laundry detergent and other household and yard chemicals.

You can combat these problems of hazardous cleaning products by cleaning your office and home green. You can clean with environmentally-friendly cleaning solutions that won't hurt the fish and plants in our rivers and streams and by changing your bathrooms into places where you can save money on water, paper and energy in the process.

GreenSeal offers multiple products to clean everything from your bathroom to your windows to your walls and floors. The Enviro Care Washroom Cleaner takes care of your soap scum and any mineral deposits that not only are havens for bacteria but are unsightly. At the same time, this solution doesn't hurt the environment when it is flushed away through your drainage pipes.

The Enviro Glass Cleaner works just like other types of glass cleaners to clean mirrors, formica and other polished materials and doesn't use alcohol or leave streaks. The Enviro Care Low Foam All Purpose Cleaner will clean your floors, walls and other surfaces without even needing to be rinsed. GreenSeal offers other environmentally-friendly cleaning solutions, as well, to meet your needs. These cleaners are typically non-toxic, biodegradable and some are even registered with the EPA. You do have to follow the mixing instructions when you use these. They come in a concentrated form and need to be mixed with water.

How to Move Green - Cleaning

Title: How to Move Green - Cleaning
How to Move Green – Cleaning

The green moving part of this moving guide explains several ways to make your move more green. This article will talk about ways to stay green while doing a last clean of your old home.

Green Clean

When all your items have been loaded onto the moving truck and have been shipped, it is time to give your house a final clean. The first thing is to gather all leftover items and debris that need to be thrown out.

When gathering the debris, you may find many different types of materials, some of which can be recycled. There may be, for example, some of your leftover boxes that the movers did not utilize. These leftover boxes and other recyclable materials should be taken to a recycling center.

You moving company is prohibited by law from shipping hazardous materials such as paint, drain cleaner, batteries, antifreeze, gasoline, motor oil, pool chemicals, rodent spray, etc., so you will need to dispose of these materials in a safe manner. Call the local collection facility to find out what the requirements are for proper disposal.

After the leftover debris has been recycled or properly disposed of, you may want to give your home a nice clean. To reduce your impact, utilize cleaning products such as Simple Green that are non-toxic and biodegradable.

If you movers left some accidental marks on your walls, you can usually removet them with a cellulose sponge and some soap and warm water. Be careful, however, not to get drywall too wet as it can absorb water and crack.

If cleaning your house after a long moving day doesn’t sound that fun, you can always hire a cleaning service to give your house a final cleaning. Careful not to schedule the cleaners on the same day of your move, as some moves may take a little longer than planned.

The Final Check

After the house is nice and clean, give it one last walkthrough to make sure nothing has been left behind. Be sure to look in the nooks and crannies of the attic, closets, and basement, as some items can easily get lost there.

Top 3 Steps to CLEAN not GREEN Above Ground Swimming Pool Water

C.A McCraw 2008-03-05
Title: Top 3 Steps to CLEAN not GREEN Above Ground Swimming Pool Water
A major problem for all Above Ground pool owners every year is Green Water. The onset of Cloudy or Green water can take the fun out of the summer swimming time very quickly. All you know is that just days ago when you first filled your pool, the water was crystal clear and clean, but now you can barley see the bottom as the water has changed to a nice Avocado Green. What do you do? Yes you could dump it all out and start over, but depending on the size of the pool, this can be quite costly as water is not cheap. The answer is in an ounce of prevention. Understanding the maintenance of the water is essential to clear water all summer long, the following are the things you must control on a regular schedule in order to have Clear, Clean Above Ground swimming water in your pools.

Step # 1: Test the Water Weekly: You must maintain the correct balance of chemicals in your pool water, mainly PH balance and Chlorine levels. This can easily be accomplished with an inexpensive Pool Test kit. Kits with test strips or tablets are the easiest to use and offer the fastest way to get readings on your water.

PH balance is the measure of how acidic or alkaline your water. A PH number below 7.0 indicates your water is acidic. Above 7.0 says your water is alkaline based. Since your eyes hold a PH level of between 7.2-7.3, that is the number you are after when it comes to the PH. That level would be perfect, but if not perfect, any level between 7.0 and 7.5 should be just fine. Pool water which is too acidic will lead to burning eyes, dry skin and lost of color to that favorite bathing suit of yours. Acidic water will also put a strain on the durability of the pool as it slowly eats it away. High alkaline readings will also lead to burning eyes and cloud the water like a milk shake. Balance the water, and you are well on your way to clear swimming.

Chlorine is also a balancing act. Too much and your eyes are still burning, too little and the little Green plants we call Algae are sure to be present. Remember, Chlorine is a sterilizer and many have decided that it is a needed element to the pool, while others are choosing to do without as it has been linked to carcinogens. If you choose to use it, try to maintain a measured level of only 1.0 to 3.0 ppm (parts per million). Any Algae will die with concentrations as low as 0.05 ppm, so even at very low levels, if will insure the non-green affect.

Step # 2: Insure your Filter Pump is Adequate and in Working Condition Constant filtration is a must. It makes since that the little floaties which enter your swimming pool from kids, falling debris, and bacteria must be removed in order for the water to remain clean and clear. Your filter pump must be maintained as a Priority. Check to insure that you have the right pump for moving at least the equivalent 100% of the water through the filter every 4-5 hours. This is probably the normal time that the pool will be in operation. Insure that all of the hose attachments are snug and without leakage. A little lubricant like Vaseline™ always helps to insure a long lfe for your hoses right at the connection points. Make sure you have plenty of filter material on hand as you should change it out every 2 weeks, depending on how often the kids and you are in the Above Ground Swimming Pool. Always have your filter pump plugged into a GFCI receptacle for your own safety and for the life of this unit. An ounce of prevention, remember.

Step # 3: Invest in a Pool Cover It is amazing how many people make the investment in their Above Ground Swimming Pools and forget the key element in its cleanliness-Get a Cover! The pool cover will absolutely save you hours upon hours of time in your cleaning regimen. Most of the falling and blown debris you find in your pool enters while you are not in it. It’s just how it is. By having the proper size cover attached anytime the pool is not being used for swimming, will reduce the amount of debris in the pool, thus helping your pump filter system out of having to work at max capacity everyday.

Pay attention to 3 items to insure Clean not Green Above Ground Swimming Pool Water:

•Take care of the water by testing and keeping PH and Chlorine levels balanced •Take care of your filter pump with a little maintenance so it works the way it was intended to and removes all of the pools floaties and debris •Invest in a good pool cover unless you live in a bubble

Remember. Your Summer Swimming Activities are depending on your to maintain Crystal Clear water as no one wants to splash in a bowl of Split Pea Soup. Enjoy the summer in clear water! Automakers Let You Push That Green Button

Glady Reign 2007-01-28
Title: Automakers Let You Push That Green Button

Not all cars are environmentally equal. Tailpipe emissions and fuel economy vary not just between different vehicles but with same type as well. Moreover, the choice of vehicle is a significant factor in making the air clean and fresh. With the aim of promoting clean air, automakers are now adept in making customers push their green button in favor of eco-friendly cars.

There is a wide variety of options surrounding the purchase of green vehicles. As a fact, there are advanced vehicle offers that produce the paramount environmental beneficial benefits. Automakers have conducted series of studies and testing regarding the manufacture of green vehicles. Nowadays, there are already a great number of cars and trucks which are powered by alternative fuels. These alternative fuels are said to etch an important milestone to a clean environment.

In order for a particular vehicle to be clean, it must substantially minimize 2 types of pollutants: the smog-forming pollutants and the heat-trapping gases. The first type includes nitrogen oxides (NOx) and hydrocarbons which are responsible for some respiratory ailments of millions of Americans. The second type of pollutants, on the other hand, includes carbon dioxide (CO2). The latter is the primary pollutant that produces global warming.

Today, auto market is overwhelmed by advanced green auto options like fuel cell vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, battery electric vehicles, alternative fuel vehicles and greener conventional vehicles.

Fuel cell vehicles are powered through the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen. These vehicles can use various fuel sources without compromising its performance. Fuel cell reduces the environmental impacts of the vehicles. This is because pure hydrogen eliminates all smog-forming pollutants. Fuel cell vehicles are expensive. In fact, automakers have invested a great sum to come up with this technology.

In connection with hybrid electric vehicles, their designs vary widely. However, all of them are improved by the conventional petrol fuel. The difference is that through an electric motor, hybrids produce the cleanest technologies. Petrol and electric sources allow the vehicles to reach greater performance range than other vehicles powered by petrol alone. According to some enthusiasts these vehicles are quiet, responsive and fun. They are priced at around $20,000. Two of the most remarkable hybrids today are Toyota Prius and Honda Civic.

Battery electric vehicles, powered by renewable power battery electrics, have no tailpipe. They are up to 99 per cent cleaner than other gasoline-powered vehicles and they are actually zero-polluting. The first generation of these vehicles had a driving range of 50 to 80 miles per charge. Nowadays, with the advances in technology, the limitations are slowly deteriorating. With newer batteries, the driving range is jumping to over 100 miles per charge. Battery electrics are agile, quiet and smooth. These vehicles have a higher sticker price than other gasoline-powered vehicles. The price is expected to drop when these vehicles are already mass produced.

Alternative fuel vehicles are powered by compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), methanol (M85), ethanol (E85), and hydrogen fuels. They are recommended for vehicle fleets. However, it is also offered for passenger cars. There are also greener conventional vehicles on the road these days. These vehicles are based on most-recent technologies.

Volvo, one of the automakers that are absorbed in producing green cars, earlier introduced its FlexiFuel cars. They include the Volvo C30, S40 and the V50. “A renewable fuel will not on its own be able to replace today’s fossil fuels, and the range of alternative fuels will probably be far wider in the future. Many different fuels and technologies will therefore be developed in parallel. Ethanol reduces dependency on fossil fuels and Volvo’s FlexiFuel programme thus makes a vital contribution to our strategy of environmental sustainability,” noted Gerry Keaney, Senior Vice President Market of Volvo Cars’ Sales and Customer Service.

The automaker is also concentrating on the manufacture of advanced Volvo fuel pump, engine, filters and other auto parts to complement the green nature of its vehicles.

Certifiably Green Clean

Michael Richmond 2008-01-18
Title: Certifiably Green Clean
Michael Richmond

There is no doubt that being a Green service or Green product provider is the way of the future. It is becoming economically astute to proclaim to be Green even if it is solely to garner business. This is now the phase in the Green janitorial market. What was last year's janitorial service is suddenly this year's Green janitorial service. So, tell me, what has really changed?

What has changed is essentially superficial. When the vacuums needed replacement, the owner replaced the old ones with HEPA vacuums. When it came time to place the order for more supplies, the salesperson convinced him to buy products from their Green product line. Maybe the owner got very proactive and even bought

With all the Green mania going on, it is easy to jump on the bandwagon, but this is not a hayride but a serious program that requires serious people. To be a Green Clean firm means a basic level of competence in the subject rather than the content of your janitorial cart. The higher expectations from the cleaning workforce means that knowledge must rise with claims of excellence.

A Green Program, correctly defined, is the combination of a Green Agenda by the decision-makers, the inclusion of Green Products, and the training and certification of the workforce for Green Practices. Anything else is not a Green Program.

Getting trained in Green Practices is not costly or difficult. It only requires a willingness to prove and certify that you are a true agent of Green change in the marketplace.

For any janitorial or cleaning service, the quality of their Green credentials will earn them or cost them business in 2008 and beyond. Green Clean Institute offers the only federal trademark program for Green Clean Certification.

Green Clean Certified

The ubiquitous janitor has been a part of the fabric of business operation that has had no training and little supervision, but serve an important role in our comfort and provided us a clean office. The janitor was a task-oriented job that only required that the job gets done in the alloted time to a reasonable standard.

My grandfather was a janitor in Charleston, West Virginia. While spending a summer vacation with my grandparents, I recall going to work with him as the sun was turning the sky red and night was coming. We walked from their apartment home to the building that he serviced each evening. It was my first introduction to the janitorial world at about ten years old. My grandfather was one of those "Salt of the Earth" kind of guys that seemed happy to be what he was. So, we cleaned desks, emptied trash, and swept floors. It was a god experience as I learned another aspect of my grandfather's character.

We have come a very, very long way from the from those days, and the janitor now servicing your office, school, or building is expected to do more than clean the facility. As more and more rules, mandates, and regulation come out for the Green Office, Green Building, and Green Schools, the challenge falls upon the heads of this somewhat ignored workforce. So, it is no longer business as usual for the janitorial service.

The janitorial services are now being asked to be the "People who Bring the Green" of our offices, but this requires more than a microfiber mop, a double mop bucket system, or a non-ammonia window cleaner. We are only fooling ourselves by dumping all these mandates on people who only understand that the cleaners don't work like the old products that have used for years. You can expect a backlash, non-compliance, and less-than-effective janitorial program to frustrate the Green program.

Green Clean certified is a training course offered by the Green Clean Institute that provides a solid training program for the janitorial workforce. This is not something that people want to do. It costs a few dollars per employee, and it takes a few hours to get the reading done and an exam completed.

A Green Office, Green School, and Green Building is missing a critical ingredient if they believe that a Green Agenda and Green products will create a Green Program. The most vital ingredient are the people who apply the products, use the HEPA vacuums and microfiber cloths, and understand how to sanitize against MRSA, Rhino virus, or the flu using Green products.

The Green Practices Initiative encourages all people in the decision-making capacities to insert a Green Practices Clause in all contracts, RFP, and quotation guidelines.

Clean Car Program to Promote Green Cars, Increase Savings

Anthony Fontanelle 2007-05-23
Title: Clean Car Program to Promote Green Cars, Increase Savings

In the race to promote green cars among car buyers, legislations have been passed and marketing strategies have been formulated. In the State of California, true to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s promise, these steps are already being implemented by the State government and the private sector.

The University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) recently made a study concerning a possible incentive program which will promote the sale of green cars in California. The findings show that the incentive program can lead to a 33 percent reduction of greenhouse gas emission. The program not only helps the environment but also help drivers save on their fuel expenditures. The study found out that on an average, green cars can offer as much as $2,500 savings in fuel consumption.

The said program studied by UMTRI is known as the Clean Car Discount. This program offers a timetable of fees and rebates dubbed as “feebates”. The said feebates will be based on the amount of greenhouse gas emitted by the vehicle that car buyers will purchase. Of course, the less greenhouse gas a vehicle emits, the more the incentive that will be offered.

Currently, different clean car technologies are being employed by car manufacturers. In California, known as the hotbed of Asian car manufacturers, hybrid vehicles are the most popular green cars. The promotion of other clean car technologies such as clean diesels and flex-fuel vehicles is the aim of the new incentive program. Not only will the incentive program encourage car buyers to purchase green cars but also affect car manufacturers. “Our analysis shows that by harnessing the power of price signals, feebates spur consumers to purchase and manufacturers to produce cleaner vehicles,” says Walter McManus, the director of UMTRI’s Automotive Analysis Division.

The study conducted is entitled “Economic Analysis of Feebates to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emission from Light Vehicles for California”. The said analysis is based on “The California Clean Car Discount Act” (AB 493) which is authored by State Assemblyman Ira Ruskin of the 21st Assembly District. The bill states that the California Air Resources Board or CARB must provide rebates to first time car buyers. The said rebates will be made available to those who purchase green cars or those with low global warming potential. The bill states that about twenty to twenty-five percent of cars and trucks will not be made available with the rebates. This may include large vehicles such as SUVs and pickup trucks such as the Chevrolet Colorado whether they are equipped with Chevrolet pickup traction bar or not.

The said legislation is expected to be considered by the California Assembly Appropriations Committee by the end of this month. Voting on the bill is expected to commence by early June.

The study made by the UMTRI examined the effect of the incentive program on the amount of greenhouse gas emissions released by vehicles on the State’s roads. The incentive program is also examined how it will work with the existing Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 in reducing the amount of greenhouse gas released onto the atmosphere by cars and trucks. The study found out that the present greenhouse gas regulation reduces greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 26.7 percent. The said legislation enforces a limit on greenhouse gas emission by different industries in the state of California and imposes penalties for industries unable to comply.

With the existing regulation combined with the proposed bill which offers feebates at $18 for every gram of carbon dioxide emitted by a certain vehicle per mile, greenhouse gas reduction is 25 percent more than what the present regulation can do on its own. The present and the proposed regulation when used together can also help retailers earn by as much as 6.7 percent. This is because the feebates is expected to boost the sale of green cars. “We concluded that a feebates program combined with California's Pavley law is a potent policy solution to reduce global warming emissions because everyone gains - the consumer, the retailer and the environment we share,” says McManus. This proposed bill when passed into law will greatly reduce California’s greenhouse gas production since cars and trucks produced about a third of the total greenhouse gas emissions of the state. Presently, there are in excess of 20 million passenger vehicles on the state’s roads. That number is expected to rise by as much as 1.9 million vehicles every year.

Go Green While Earning Green!

Melissa Senter 2007-05-05
Title: Go Green While Earning Green!

As a parent you are right to be concerned about the kinds of cleaning products used in your child's day care or schools. Cleaning products contribute to the contamination of indoor air, especially those containing solvents, perfumes or other irritating or harmful chemicals. Chlorine bleach can be irritating to the airways, especially to young children. Given the need to protect children in day care programs from disease, it is also important that the facility is cleaned well.

Because germ-killing products, or antimicrobials, are considered pesticides, all disinfectants sold in the United States must be registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In terms of regulation, antimicrobial pesticides differ from pesticides used to kill insects and weeds: Disinfectants, for example, must be shown to be effective in killing disease-causing bacteria.

Note that there are two types of disinfectants: hospital disinfectants and general use disinfectants. In addition, sanitizers are used to reduce microbes to safe levels. However, they are not required to eliminate them.

EPA registration doesn't guarantee that the product kills germs. Many EPA-registered antimicrobial products are registered because they kill algae, odor-causing bacteria, bacteria which causes spoilage or deterioration, and microbes that are infectious only to animals.

For that reason, you should read the label carefully and contact the manufacturer. They should be able to provide you with data on the kinds of disease-killing microbes the disinfectant kills and its level of efficacy. You should be able to find a customer service number on the product label or on the company's website.

CHEC cannot recommend any specific disinfectant or cleaner for school use.

If you want to hear more by attending a free online workshop on how you can change to safer and more effective products in your home contact Melissa at: melissa_t2s@earthlink.net and say you want to attend a go green workshop or http://melissa.betterhealthinfo.net/
