Nonrepresentational or nonobjective art is not an invention of the twentieth century. A number of cultures, like the Islamic and Jewish, have developed over the centuries a high standard of decorative or non-figurative art forms. Today, abstract art is generally understood to be the form of art that does not depict objects in the natural world, but instead uses shapes and colors in a nonrepresentational or subjective way. According to art experts, in its purest form in Western art, an abstract art is one without a recognizable subject, one which does not relate to something external. This type of ornamental art, without figurative representation occurs today in many cultures. As the modern abstract movement in sculpture and paining emerged in Europe and North America between 1910 and 1920, two approaches have been generally accepted to produce different abstract styles: images that have been "abstracted" from nature to the point where they no longer reflect a conventional reality, and nonobjective, or "pure" art forms, which do not share any reference to reality. A further distinction tends to be made between abstract art which is geometric, such as the work of Piet Mondrian, and abstract art that is more fluid, such as in the works of Wassily Kandinsky. It was Kandinsky who once said that "of all arts, abstract painting is the most difficult. It demands that you know to draw well, that you have a heightened sensitivity for composition and of colors, and that you are a true poet; this last is essential." Abstract art began in the avant-garde movements of the late 19th century -Impressionism, neo-Impressionism, and post-Impressionism. These painting styles reduced the importance of the original subject matter and began to emphasize the creative process of painting itself. As artists in Europe at the early twentieth century "broke free" from the conventional representational rules art forms had to follow, figurative abstractions, or simplifications of reality, where detail is eliminated from recognizable objects leaving only the essence or some degree of recognizable form, became popular increasing the variations of art forms and view points. With different abstract styles, like Synchronism and Orphism, abstract art emphasized on color over form, on feelings over logic. The action painting of an American Abstract Expressionist, Jackson Pollock, who dripped, dropped, smeared, spattered, or thrown paint on the canvas, is a good example of such a tremendous change in art focus and technique. After the introduction of technology and the mass utilization of software programs that assisted people "play around" with their own photographs, paintings or other art forms, abstract art has gained more popularity than ever before. But although being able to draw well is not an issue anymore, as Kandinsky pointed out, being a "true" poet is what still separates the amateur attempts to create abstract art from the artifacts of a true talent.

Title: Why We Love Abstract Art
As a professional Artist I am passionate about art and how I can use it to express myself. I also have a passion for nature so in my abstract art paintings I combine the two. I believe that abstract art is the art of the future as it conveys a message to the observer. In my experience, and I hear this from my customers all the time, people are drawn to the vibrant colours and shapes. A piece of artwork needs to resonate with the observer for that person to want to have it displayed in their home. The painting needs to ‘ring a chord’ deep within, to hold that ‘special something’, that ‘je ne sais quoi’. Abstract art can be a mystery, as people don’t know why they are drawn to a piece, it just IS right for them. Colour and shape play an important part in the overall design of the abstract piece. Some people say that abstract art is ‘easy art’ or they say ‘a child could do that !’, playing down the greatness of the abstract work. However, most abstract art is inspired work that is channelled through the artist in one way or another, so abstract art has a unique quality of being a very personal art making it unique in its concept. Abstract artists work with their emotions and their sense of feeling for a particular subject, whether it be seascapes, landscapes, sunsets or flowers. The way in which I work is that I tune into nature and feel inspired by its colours and shapes, then I feel a sense of deep calm and peace and am then able to paint in a very focussed state, resulting in a unique piece of artwork. That is the beauty of abstract art, you never find 2 pieces the same!! If anyone has a piece of abstract artwork in their home they will know that every time they look at that piece of art it changes their mood, a connection is made. And that is the crux of abstract art, it conveys a message. It can be a great healing tool whereby it can calm the emotions, spark desire or creativity, provoke a happy memory, enable the observer to daydream or just the fact of the colour vibration and the effect that can have on the observer. Abstract art is great, it can enrich our lives and enhance our environments whether it be the office or the contemporary modern home.

Title: Abstract Photography
Understanding the true art of abstract photography. Abstract photography is unlike most other types of photography - rules, such as composition and accurate focusing hold no values. The abstract photographer uses his creative imagination to create stunning works of art. Abstract photography is a popular form of art and the rewards for a good abstract photographer are most worthwhile. Art buyers pay large amounts for good abstract work. What is abstract photography? Abstract photography is a process of using colours and patterns combined to create an image, with no true meaning or no clear subject involved. Abstract photography is not necessarily going to mean the same thing to everyone. Abstract photography leaves more to the imagination and helps us concentrate on texture and colour rather than the whole subject. If you are looking to try a new form of photography, abstract photography will certainly be an enjoyable challenge and very rewarding if you master the true art. Creating an abstract image can be easy - creating a great abstract image is difficult. One of the most simple ways of creating an abstract image is by using water and your cameras’ shutter combined. Shooting fast flowing water, with a slow shutter speed of one second will give you a blur effect. This is quite simple to do, but will it look attractive? This will depend on light - shooting water with a slow shutter speed when the sun is low in the sky will give your image more attractive colours. Different films will also produce different colours. Adding colour filters will also improve your abstract photography. If you are using a digital camera, filters can be added later with Photoshop. Using a slow shutter speed to shoot a flag blowing in the wind will also give you an abstract image. The trick to keeping abstract photography attractive when using your cameras’ shutter is to crop tightly. Fill the view finder with the blur image. Some kinds of macro photography can be considered as abstract. Close-ups of flowers and other plant life will make great abstract subjects. As with shooting water - macro abstracts should be cropped tightly and the image should have a theme of colour. Some street lights can also create abstract photographs. Every where we go we are surrounded with colour, textures and patterns. Patterns make for great abstract images. New patterns are formed by nature every day and this is the best place to start to create marketable abstract photographs. There are no guidelines for creating good abstract images, just use your imagination along with the natural world to create your master piece. Title: Knowing About Contemporary Abstract Sculpture
Sculpture is defined as a human made three-dimensional object given the recognition of an art. Abstract sculpture is one, which is devoid of any definite shape or figure. The Contemporary Abstract Sculpture has been regarded as more interesting to the students of sculpture. The Contemporary Abstract Sculpture has the open provision of certain creation, which is far away from being specific and figurative. For most of the time it is beyond our ken. Abstract Sculpture is one, which is abstruse, speculative and tough to understand. It is the unique aptitude and thought of the sculptor which he creates through an abstract sculpture. The aptitude of a sculptor is manifested in his sculpture. In the Contemporary days Abstract Sculpture has reached the height of fame and is given equal importance as that of Figurative sculpture. Contemporary Abstract Sculpture has the potential to add maximum pleasure and charm in our life. It also widens our appreciation of the intellectual and aesthetic potential of a sculpture. The myriad style, techniques and ingredients used for abstract sculpture in the contemporary days is more or less similar to those used in the primitive days. Through out history the materials used for sculpture by the sculptors were mainly bronze, marble, limestone, granites etc. Precious materials were in use too, such as gold, silver, ivory and jade. It is evident from Contemporary Abstract Sculpture that along with the use of the primitive materials, the use of glass, sand, aluminium, iron, polymers, many other synthetic materials and liquid crystals are well preferred by the modern abstract sculptors. Enriched with the different materials an abstract sculpture in the contemporary days exposes exquisite beauty. http://www.reynoldsgallery.co.uk/contemporary_abstract_sculpture.htm

Title: Touchy - Feely (Concrete vs. Abstract)
Ever wonder why kids hang on to their teddy bears, binkies, blankies, etc. for so long? Have you ever wondered why they don't understand a story you've told them? Because kids are touchy-feely! Children do not actually understand abstract ideas until around age 8. They will be able to pay lip service to something abstract earlier, but most don't actually understand the concept until around age 8. Abstract is not just for art. Abstract means that something is a concept, an idea, something we thought of, something we believe in or know to be a fact, but is not something that can be seen. The results may be seeable, but not the fact itself. Children won't understand this abstractness about a concept until they've learned to understand that an "idea" is a concept. Think about it. Some great abstracts are God, wind, and charm. You can't see them. But they're there, nonetheless. You see the results of God's power by looking at a sunset, a new calf, or into your child's eyes. But you can't SEE God. You can feel the wind, see its gentle or destructive powers, see things being blown about by the wind, but you can't SEE the wind. And you can see the results of someone being charmed into falling for a scam, but you can't actually see the snake oil oozing out of the con-artist's pores (though you might feel that you can!). Same with kids. They can listen to a story, repeat what you say, and regurgitate it back to you, but they don't sincerely understand the concept of what it would have been like to be the person in that story until they are 8, 10, or even 12 years old. We start teaching children to write at 4, 5, or 6 and they eventually learn to draw the connections between the written words and the spoken words. They learn to write by mimicking what you've written down on paper. But it's hard to get a child to write a whole sentence in the first grade. It takes practice on the child's part and patience on the teacher's or parent’s part. After weeks and months of practice, the concept of connecting all those written words together into an understandable string of words called a "sentence" actually gels in the child's mind. The same is true for trying to teach children in the lower grades how to write paragraphs and essays. A paragraph is a more or less structured concept that adults have created that strings several of those "nebulous" sentences together into a collective thought. Still a concept, an abstract. A young child, who has enough trouble trying to understand what the purpose of a sentence is, will have even more trouble understanding the purpose of a paragraph. Because it's an abstract concept. Draw the connection between those sentences and something CONCRETE that the child can see and touch and feel and you finally have an abstract CONCEPT that the child can see, and therefore understand. Numbers are a concept, and idea in our heads. Numerals, on the other hand (5, 8, 43) are the concrete version that we can see so we use numerals to explain, on paper, the idea of adding and subtracting numbers. With numerals (or blocks or hash marks drawn on a paper), the student can see the concept he/she is trying portray and understand. Parents, teachers, and the community in general need to learn why it is so hard for children to try and learn certain abstract concepts. We, as parents and teachers, have created ad infinitum different ways/formulae/rubrics to get children to write paragraphs and essays. Most of those rubrics don't work with younger children because they are TOO HARD to learn. They are concepts, abstract and nebulous, that a child can mimic, but won't truly understand until they are old enough to understand abstracts. Children (even some high school students) need something simple, something easy to remember, something visual that they can touch and feel, that they can use as a tactile reminder of what that concept is all about. The words "paragraph" and "essay" are abstract concepts. The use of something visual and tactile will turn those abstract concepts into something concrete that a child can understand, usually better, faster and more permanently, than other concepts. Enter the Hand. With five fingers on a hand and five sentences in a paragraph, a child has something visual that he/she can look at and manipulate. Using this concrete device the child will eventually be able to draw the connection between the idea of a paragraph or essay and the written, concrete version of that idea. Use your hand as the concrete manipulative, or find a curriculum that does, to turn the abstract idea into a concrete one from which your student can learn. ****************** Johnnie W. Title: How to Paint Abstract Art
Copyright 2006 Lynne Taetzsch Do you want to create abstract art, but feel that you don't know where to begin? Here are some ideas to get you started: Begin traditionally by copying from life and gradually move into abstraction. When I was young, I drew and painted portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. Sometimes I copied from a photograph or a reproduction of someone else's art. The goal at that time was to represent what I saw as closely as possible. It wasn't until my late teens that I began to "abstract" or move away from reality. I still began with a subject, but I did not feel bound to represent it, only to use it as a starting-off point for my own purposes. All art is abstract in the sense that it is not the object itself. Many who call themselves "abstract artists" are indeed painting a subject, but freely stylizing that subject. If you want to paint "abstract" but have trouble figuring out how to approach the canvas, try taking a subject you have painted before and abstracting it. If you are painting from life, for example, try squinting your eyes until all you can see are the blurry outlines of your subject. Forget the details. Take your brush or pencil and sketch in the broad shapes and contours. Or take a very small section of your subject and blow it up to cover the whole canvas. Now stand back and see how your composition unfolds, how the shapes take form and become interesting in and of themselves, without reference to your subject. Keep playing with your composition, adding and subtracting shapes, modifying color, strengthening lines. Follow what draws you in, scrap what doesn't. Work fast, and then stop and study what you have. Another way to begin to paint abstract art is to use your emotions to get you started. Listening to music is one way I enhance my emotions when I paint. Sometimes I choose music to reflect my current mood: new age, jazz or classical for reflective moods, rock for strong, driving emotions, and so forth. Sometimes a particular mood develops as I listen to and empathize with the lyrics of a song. Music's rhythm and tempo can also have an influence on the quality and speed with which you apply a paintbrush or palette knife to the canvas. How you apply the paint will be reflected in the result, leaving a trace of the musical rhythm you were listening to as you made it. Try this experiment: think of yourself as an instrument or tool of the music in your head. Relax and let the music select colors, control the movement of your hands, and create the content. Aside from music, emotion itself can drive the painting process. Non-representational art is the best way to directly express emotion because it isn't constrained by attempting to be "true" to a particular subject matter. If you wake up mad at the world, you can paint a jagged swath of red across the canvas, directly expressing your anger. Color, line, form--everything in your painter's arsenal is available to say exactly how you are feeling. One day when I was in a particularly dark mood, I kept feeling "bloody secret" as I painted. Yet I wanted this feeling to be both exposed and hidden at the same time. The result was a painting I titled, "Tied in a Bow." I painted the bloody secret in thick red paint in the center of the canvas, but I tied it in a bow and framed it prettily in pink. Thus, the blood was there, but it was my secret. If you are feeling a strong emotion of any kind, try expressing it directly through color, line and form on the canvas. But remember that whatever method you use to begin an abstract painting, you’ll need to pay attention to composition, interest, energy, and focus in order to complete it successfully.
