Title: Performance Management Success via The Balanced Scorecard

Financial numbers may tell us we're winning the war, but it takes performance management to show us how to focus our energy and efforts to win each of the battles along the way. Bob Gee, a good friend and coworker, once said, "You can't control what you don't measure". Imagine trying to fly an airplane across the country and the cockpit had no dashboard, no gauges and no idiot lights. You may get it up off the ground but without Performance Measurement the chances of getting to where you want to go are slim to none. Business success may not be a life-death situation but like piloting an airplane it takes Performance Measurement to get you to where you want to go. Performance measurement systems can be motivational or de-motivational. The individual goal setting of the 80's is a good example of de-motivational measurement - it tested one individual or group against the other, and while satisfying some individual egos, it provided little contribution to company growth and profit objectives. Today, the performance scorecard is a performance measurement system that helps companies pursue their key success factors. The scorecard uses both internal and external benchmarking and employs a relevant cascading method of performance goal setting. Achievements are acknowledged and celebrated on a "real time" basis and not at the traditional annual review. For a balanced scorecard process to be motivational it must provides timely and accurate data. Simplicity is a key to the validity of measurements and the tractability of problems to their root cause. Data collection design must employ simple and easy to maintain databases to assure data integrity. When people are trained in this process and are permitted to participate in relevant goal setting, performance measurement can motivate teams to higher achievements - including the exceeding of growth and profit expectations. Five key elements of the balanced scorecard process are: 1. Establish a "no status-quo" mind-set - if you're not winning, you're losing, 2. Title: Chrysler''s Ground-breaking Ceremony for New Axle Plant in Marysville

The City of Marysville has recently given Chrysler AG a warm welcome headed by Marysville Mayor Gary Orr to show its appreciation for Chrysler AG’s decision in choosing the city as the site for the $700 million axle plant. The ground-breaking ceremony was headed by Chrysler’s executives and was witnessed by the honorable Mayor of Marysville and by the officials of the United Auto Workers.
The construction of the new plant will start on the 750,000-square-footplant this summer. The company also plans to makes its first axles ready for the 2010 production year so this means that the new plant has to be finished before the end of 2009.
The new axle plant will employ some 1,150 workers and has been on a fast track since two month ago when the Chrysler officials have told representatives from the Economic Development Alliance of St. Clair County that the St. Clair Township site was perfect for what they wanted. The site chosen by Chrysler has rail line, a natural tree border that separates it from the rest of its neighbors plus its great advantage is the fact that it is near a major highway.
Fred Hoffman, Director of State Relations fro Chrysler said, "I think you'll see, certainly by later this year, huge evidence of activity."
It won’t be long before Chrysler AG the producer of best quality Dodge bumper finally separates from Daimler and become Chrysler Holdings LLC that is of course after the 80.1 percent deal is concluded. The new owner of Chrysler AG is a private equity firm, the Cerberus Capital Management LP, which has bought 80.1 percent of Chrysler AG for $7.4 million.
Anyway going back to the new axle plant, some of the axles that are to be produced at the said plant are to be sold to Mercedes-Benz to enhance its fuel efficiency. According to Frank Ewasyshyn, Chrysler’s Executive Vice-President of Manufacturing, the axles will reduce friction and heat while sending power to the wheels.Furthermore, although Chrysler will be selling axles to Mercedes-Benz but still it wants to keep them in-house since it wants to maintain its technology exclusive.
Hoffman has also said that the company will take bids from both local and state companies for the construction of the plant. He further added that the work is likely to be done by a unionized work force. He urges the local firms to contact the Economic Development Alliance of St. Clair County if ever they are interested in submitting a bid on the plant. For the meantime the city of Marysville together with the Economic Development Alliance of St. Clair County have yet to finalize the sale of the land with its owner Jim Stephenson.
The company is also in the process of obtaining state permits such as those from the State Department of Environmental Quality which is needed since the site includes wetlands explained Hoffman.
Sandra Kilby, St. Clair’s Township Supervisor told the crowd at the ground-breaking ceremony that she hopes the plant won’t change the character of the township. She said, "I hope we can all continue ... preserving the rural community where this plant exists while sharing in the prosperity that it brings."

The future of building technology is here and it’s full of holes. The Swiss cheese exoskeleton shell of COR, the first sustainable, mixed use condominium in Miami, Florida is a hyper-efficient smart skin simultaneously providing the building structure, thermal mass for insulation, shading for natural cooling, terrace enclosures, armatures for energy producing turbines, and loggias for congregating at the ground level.
COR, represents a dynamic synergy between architecture, structural engineering and ecology. The design is not only revolutionary in sustainable terms, but in visual impact. The impression of this building is arresting even in light of the current architectural trend towards irregular, non-linear features exploding upon the recent architectural landscape. The building rises 400 feet, and seems to float over the city as a futuristic and ethereal being, punctuated by a multitude of round Swiss Cheese holes, which at times come together to form a living bubble-on-pond effect.
The architect credits the developer for being receptive to the unusual design wherein the structure of the building is both the skin and an aperture to hold the wind turbines. Oppenheim notes that COR evolved from a complex architectural study including careful analysis of its site. The surprise of the design arises from its functionality and its vision in creating an energy efficient sustainable building. Oppenheim states that he views building materials as opportunities to provide dual uses—for example, the skin of COR is not just cladding, it provides an armature for wind turbines, protection from the sun and forms an arcade at the ground level.
Rising 25 stories above Miami’s Design District, COR extracts power from its environment utilizing the latest in advancements in wind turbines, photovoltaic technology and solar hot water generation. With an estimated completion date of 2010, COR is 480,000 square feet, with 113 residential units ranging in size from 700 to 2,000 sf, with prices from $300,00 to 1 million. COR will have a café, 2 restaurants, office space and live work galleries.
Sustainable design is architecture that creates a minimal impact on the environment and makes maximum and intelligent use of the world’s dwindling resources. Sustainability and green design also includes creating healthy indoor environments.
Water is becoming the new frontier for concern, both through density and drought. Green and sustainable elements in COR include water harvesting, capturing rain water and roof run-off in cisterns, using filtration systems in recycling grey water produced from washing machines, dishwashers and other household and light business use, and filtering it for use again as irrigation.
The wind farm on the roof of COR will generate power-reducing dependency on electric power and saving energy by producing solar hot water. Energy efficient appliances with energy star features will be using less water overall. LED lighting will be used instead of incandescent, natural daylight will flood interiors through energy efficient glass, and the multi use building shell provides thermal mass for insulation and shading for outdoor terraces and cooking.
COR has been received with applause. Unanimously approved by the Urban Design Review Board of the City of Miami, the project represents the ideals fostered by Miami Mayor, Manny Diaz for its properties of green and ecologically sustainable sound design. Oppenheim is a part of Mayor Diaz’ Green Committee.
Oppenheim notes that this project may represent solutions for the concerns of global warming, dwindling resources such as land and water, and competition for fewer and fewer resources. Certainly it blazes across the new frontier of sustainability.

The axle plant is just one part of the Company’s “Powertrain Offensive” which is a $3 billion investment to produce more fuel-efficient engines, axles, and transmissions for the Chrysler Group.
Construction on the new plant will start this summer and will employ 900 people when it reaches full volume in 2010 and expected to produce 1.2 million axles annually. Gary Orr, Mayor of Marysville, Mich., said, "We came together as several separate entities to formulate the requirements necessary to attract Chrysler Group to a project site for their new axle plant. For that we are so very grateful. As a City Council, we are excited and as Mayor of record I am extremely proud, as an administrative team, we stand ready to support the successful future of this great automotive giant."
The investment on the Marysville Axle Plant will in include engineering and development costs. It can be noted that the Auburn Hills-based Chrysler Group has already invested $4.4 billion for its Southeast Michigan manufacturing operations since 2003.
